Kuwait section continued its 2005-
06 season with its 2nd major presentation
of the year New Era-
Jurassic Exploration in Kuwait:
Discoveries, Impact and Challenges
at the Radisson SAS hotel on 17
October.
Khaled Al-Saif, Kuwait, SPE
Chairman and KOC Manager,
Financial Services, welcomed
another packed house in the second
meeting of the fall season as a
KOC-sponsored event.
Guest speaker, Khalid Ali Al-
Sumaiti, EAMD, Exploration and
Production Development from
KOC, spoke about the new era of
revolutionary as well as strategic
thinking in exploring Jurassic formations
in North Kuwait.
He outlined the early developments
in drilling from 1951-1981. During
the 50s and 60s, development rather
than exploration was the way things
were done without a single test.
Wells were abandoned but never
really tested. Since 1995, events
have changed dramatically through
geo-scientific efforts with a new
framework, concepts and visions to
map fractures, target faults as well as

Three trips were organized for
more than 300 employees and their
families. The Community Services
Team coordinated and organized
the trips.
EAMD (Administration) Ali Al-
Shammari described Community
Services as the ‘Good Initiatives

Team’ for all their effort in arranging
these important trips. “Similar
to our meetings in the Holy City of
Makkah, this evening is a reflection
of the ‘One-Family Spirit’ that
brings all employees and their families
together to serve our beloved
country,” he said.
Al-Shammari thanked the members
of the Community Service
Development Committee for shouldering
many responsibilities. He
also thanked the pilgrims for their
cooperation and commitment in
this endeavor.
Kuwait Airways representatives as
well as Masha’ir for Hajj & Omra
received special recognition.

“Basically,” he said, “KOC
now has a concept, a model and its
applications. Our three main objectives
are reserves, production as well
as oil & gas production. There are
huge associated gas/gas condensate
reservoirs here.” This new exploration
phase, which is separate from
the North Kuwait Project, is overand-above
KOC’s 2020 Strategy for
4 billion barrels per day.”
In a lively question-and-answer session,
he highlighted objectives and
strategies in more detail. He stressed

that KOC must work aggressively.
ìWe must think ‘win/win’. We must
understand the true extent of the
reservoirs and to do this we will
lease satellite EPFs on a 5-year
renewable basis. We will need experienced
people for the new rigs that
will be required. We will also plan
for high value over the next 5 years
as we work together with the marketing
people but first, we will need
much more detailed information
which will include H2S as a problem
to be solved, for example. We
plan to take full information into
account from area to area and use it
as our model for success.
Khalid Ali Al-Sumaiti concluded by
focusing on ‘One Team Spirit’
between the IOCs or Service
Providers and the KOC. “If we work
alone, it will take a long time but
when we work together with others,
things will happen sooner. The last
6-7 years have been very fruitful.
We have the best quality crude oils
in all the Middle East. Natural gas
reserves are now beginning that will
herald on a new era of self-sufficiency
in gas for Kuwait.”
