Team Ireland
Foundation
Launched
Motorsport Ireland launched the Team
Ireland Foundation on 16th February at
the Mansion House in Dublin.
Team Ireland is a national programme
of support and development for talented
drivers in the sports of rallying, racing and
karting. Formally launched by the Lord
Mayor of Dublin, President of Motorsport
Ireland and the US based philanthropist
and long time motorsport fan John
Campion.
The Team Ireland Foundation will focus
on identifying, supporting and coaching
Irish competitors who can succeed in all
categories of competition both domestically
and across the globe. The aim is to put Irish
drivers at the forefront of international
motorsport.
Team Ireland
Foundation’s main
supporters, John
Campion flew in from
his base in USA to
attend the launch.
Having left Ireland
as a young man
with just IR£20 in
his pocket, this
former roadie to
the rock stars, now
multimillionaire businessman
and long time motorsport fan has
committed to supporting the foundation
from the beginning.
Mr Campion said: “As a young boy in Cork I
found myself struggling with school and at a
loss as to what I would do with my life. But
I always felt a bond with motorsport after
witnessing
Billy Coleman, a farmer who
became a world rallying icon, competing
near my home in Cork. After seeing Billy
rallying I realised then that if you put your
mind to it, you could achieve anything.
The initiative will be run by Declan
Brennan Sports Management and entails
2

Feature
specific programmes developed to address
nutritional, physical and psychological
improvements for the participants over the
course of their involvement. The drivers
will be chosen from the winners of many
of the junior motorsport disciplines,
such as rallying and racing, as well as the
winners of the elite Billy Coleman and
Sexton trophies. They will be offered every
opportunity to benefit form a wide range of
expertise on offer.
During the launch, Lord Mayor of Dublin
Críona Ní Dhálaigh said: “We are all aware
that there is an issue in this country with
young men taking unnecessary risks on
our public roads. All too often you open a
newspaper and read about tragic accidents
claiming the lives of young drivers –
particularly young males from the ages of 17
to 25.”
“Motorsport Ireland has been a force for
good in promoting road safety through
various programmes for many years and
with this new initiative I hope that as a
national sports governing body they will be
recognised for the work they do to create a
safe environment for young people to take
part in an organised and regulated sport.”
The Motorsport Ireland Foundation can be
contacted through its website
www.team-ireland.com
John Campion and the seven members of
Team Ireland at the launch outside The
Mansion House in Dublin.
Program Director
Program director will be Declan Brennan
of Declan Brennan Sports Management.
Declan is a former head of DCU’s
GAA Sports Academy and worked
extensively with Irish Junior World Rally
Championship driver, Daniel McKenna
last year.
John Campion
John Campion came from very humble
beginnings in Cork. As a child he loved
motorsport and rock music. He struggled
at school yet has excelled in life, founding
and building APR Energy, a $1.2 billion
company in the United States of which he
is CEO.
Now John has returned to Ireland to lend
his backing to his first love and a new
initiative which will secure the future of
motorsport in Ireland
At the age of 18, John was handed IR£20
by his father and sent on his way in life. He
made it to the United States and found work
as a roadie for the likes of Michael Jackson,
David Bowie, the Rolling Stones and other
rock icons which led to him founding and
building the business that flourishes today.
He now wants to give back to society
and while he does not like to be called a
philanthropist, he is very much of that ilk.
He is in Ireland to show his support for a
new initiative that Motor-sport Ireland is
about to launch. John has always felt a tie to
motorsport in Ireland after witnessing Billy
Coleman, a farmer that became a world
rallying icon, competing near his home. He
realised then that if you put your mind to it,
you could achieve anything.
Social Media
Social Media Policy
style piece of legislation, monitoring social media accounts. All it
does is provide a much more efficient way of dealing with issues
arising on social media once they are reported.
The correct format for the implementation of the SMP (social
media policy) is key to its success.
Sports Governing Bodies throughout various facets of
sport are currently undergoing the challenge of using
social media to enhance and develop their sport versus
controlling what their participants and officials publish
online in order to protect the reputation and integrity
of the sport and protect other participants and officials.
In order for a governing body to face this challenge a clearly set
out policy document must exist to set out what is acceptable and
what is not acceptable content on social media.
One of the other challengers however that faces Sports Governing
Bodies is what is the best format for the implementation of such
a policy and in those implementation procedures how do you
respect the right to freedom of expression versus maintaining
the reputation and integrity of the sport and protecting other
participants and officials.
There have been many criticisms of Sports Governing Bodies
who internally implement such policies with calls for better
transparency and accountability from the Sports Governing
Bodies as to how the policies are implemented and better
consistency over all in the punishments handed out to offenders.
Motorsport Ireland is no
different in this regard
and this article sets out to
formulate a best practice
for the implementation of
said social media policy
and importantly it sets out
the structure needed to
achieve accountability and
consistency in the approach
taken to all breaches under
the policy document.
As with all policy documents
and all disciplinary
procedures fairness,
consistency and equal
treatment are paramount.
This social media policy is
not designed a “big brother”
Other sporting bodies have in the past attempted to self-regulate
the use of social media by their participants and officials however
due to a lack of transparency, accountability and consistency
the general feeling is that the implementation of such SMPs has
failed.
Whilst the General Code of Conduct is perfectly adequate
for other matters of discipline, the SMP cannot and should
not be dealt with through the normal channels of complaints
and procedures as set out in the General Code of Conduct as
independence of the Panel is vital to the SMP panels success.
As such the implementation of the SMP for Motorsport Ireland
needs to be removed from the Motorsport Commission and
put into the hands of a stand-alone panel to be known as the
Motorsport Ireland Social Media Compliance Panel.
The panel will consist of the following individuals -
1. Two qualified legal experts
2. A child care / social services expert – to be utilised in cases
involving minors only.
The members of the panel will not be participants and officials
of Motorsport Ireland and must not be participants in any
Motorsport Ireland events either in the past or during their
term. This allows the panel
members to be totally
impartial to any participants
and officials of Motorsport
Ireland and to assess each
case on its merits free from
any influence or opinion of
Motorsport Ireland. This
allows for total transparency
and accountability when
dealing with issues as they
arise.
To find out more on the
disciplinary procedures in
the policy and to view it in
full, it can be located on the
Rules & Regulations tab on
www.motorsportireland.com
In Conversation with Martin McKenna,
President of Motorsport Ireland.
How did you become involved in
motorsport and then motorsport
administration??
Back in the 70’s I got involved
with my local motor club -
Monaghan. Progressed to being
clerk of the course for our stages
rally, chairman of the club, club
representative at the CAC, chairman
of the National Rallies Committee
and a member of The Motosport
Commission.
How much of your time is spent being
President of Motosport Ireland??
Quite a lot of my time outside of
my day job involves motorsport.
Obviously some times of the year are
busier than others.
Give us an idea of an average day
for you??
My average day is first and foremost
my day job - as a sales manager in
a busy agricultural industry. Then
some motorsport in the evening -
a meeting and some e-mails and
phone calls.
Tell us about the Best and Worst bits
of being President of MI??
The best - just being so involved
in all aspects of the sport and the
tremendous respect that is extended to
the position of President. The worst -
just when you have a quiet weekend
planned something important within
the sport comes up.
Can you give readers some of the
background to the recent Insurance
dilemna for rallying and the solution
sourced for 2016??
The problem is simply the number
of recent significant claims. The legal
system and the claims culture in
Ireland is different than throughout
Europe and that certainly makes
life more difficult. Through diligent
hard work with our insurers we put
together a workable plan for 2016.
How do you see MI Licence holders
can play their part within the RSA’s
on-going Road Safety Awareness
Campaigns??
I feel that it’s very important that
licenc e holders always portrays a
responsible attitude and give good
example to particularly young
people. Presently motor clubs get
involved with local schools and that’s
very positive - to teach young people
about speed and how our cars are
prepared with safety in mind and the
difference in road cars and rally cars.
Rallycross has struggled to achieve
50 entries to be allowed compete in
Mondello Park, Formula Ford and
many other race classes also appear
to be struggling for numbers in 2016.
What has gone wrong and what do
you believe can be done to grow these
numbers and effect a positive change??
Over the years different disciplines
experience fluctuations in
participants. The recent recession
would have had a major impact
and affected some aspects of the
sport more than others, rallycross
is finding it more difficult to return
to its former levels of participation.
Work is in progress to expand
rallycross and the availability of a
track in Galway will help in that
regard.
Team Ireland has quite rightly
received huge praise. Would you
please explain how young drivers
will be selected for Team Ireland
(TI) in the future??
Young drivers will be selected
through success in the young driver
awards, the Billy Coleman Award in
Rallying , the Young Racing Driver
Award and Karting has initiated it’s
own programme.
It has been mentioned that the
numbers of participants in TI will
grow. How many youngsters do you
envisage will be allowed to enter the
TI Programme by 2017/18??
I would expect that there will be
up to ten in the programme in the
future.
News
Wexford Motor Club successfully launched
their new Wexford Motor Club Youth
Academy on February 20th, an exciting new
initiative to nurture and encourage more
local young people into motorsport.
The club recognises that it can be intimidating
and challenging for young people who do
not have a family background in motorsport
to get involved in the sport and the aim of
the Wexford Motor Club Youth Academy is
to reach out to the local Wexford community
and facilitate more young people to realise
their dreams of partaking in our exciting and
rewarding sport.
Club members have been instrumental
in bringing this scheme to fruition,
with Garry Bradley, Johnny Looby, John
McGrath, among others, working hard to
design a scheme that will be rewarding and
appropriate for young people. “This Youth
Academy has been very well-coordinated
and planned by Garry Bradley and his team,”
said Graham Scallan. “They have done a
massive amount of work and as a volunteer
WRC Sweden
organisation, it’s wonderful to see the
commitment and energy coming from our
members for such a worthwhile initiative.”
The Wexford Motor Club Youth Academy
is the first of its type to be launched in
Ireland. It will be open to children aged
between 8 and 16, and will consist of a
number of workshops taking place over 8
months between February and September
2016. These workshops are designed to
provide a safe and enjoyable introduction
to motorsport and prepare participants for
their first karting event. The course content
includes theory and practical aspects,
including kart testing. The course will
culminate in a competitive karting race held
over a weekend in September 2016.
The Wexford Motor Club Youth Academy
is supported by Motorsport Ireland with
the help of the CRG Kart Ireland Race
Team, and is part of a nationwide push to
make motorsport more accessible to local
communities and allow more people to
partake in our fantastic sport. Wexford
Motor Club has been working closely
with Art McCarrick, Sport Development
Officer, Motorsport Ireland, to produce
course content that will be beneficial to
any motorsport newcomers, and also leave
participants who wish to continue on their
race career in a good position to get a first
racing licence with Motorsport
Ireland.
These are exciting times for Wexford
Motor Club and the Youth Academy
is part of a wider development
plan including a relaunched Club
Championship and the inclusion of
a number of key guest speakers at
club meetings aimed at improving
member’s knowledge of the sport,
with safety being a continued priority.
Following a successful launch,
Wexford Motor Club are delighted to
say that all places on the academy are
now filled.
Contesting their first rally with the Abu
Dhabi Total World Rally Team, Craig
Breen and his co-driver Scott Martin
produced a solid performance on the
frozen roads of Rally Sweden.
Breen’s team mate Kris Meeke wasted
little time in getting among the leaders. As
Kris went quickest on the Svullyra, Craig
produced a scintillating performance
to set third fastest time. Craig made it
back to parc ferme at Karlstad in eighth
position, less than two seconds behind
his rival Henning Solberg saying “The
conditions were better than we had been
expecting, especially in the morning. The
afternoon loop was more complicated
with all this snow. It’s pretty incredible
to say that there was too much, when we
have been waiting for it to fall all week! I
won’t forget the feeling at the end of SS7
in a hurry! I couldn’t believe it when I was
told that I had just set the third fastest
time… It’s been a fantastic
opening day with the Abu
Dhabi Total WRT.
Overnight snowfall made
for good conditions on day
two of Rally Sweden and
after a highly consistent
performance on day one,
Craig continued to learn
about rallying at this level with a series
of top-ten times. Despite having to
cope with the rapid deterioration of his
studded tyres throughout the afternoon,
he managed to stay within two seconds
of the experienced Solberg before the
super special stage that evening. The gap
slipped to 3.6sec after the day’s final test,
when Craig was forced to put his spare
wheel back on – which had lost its studs
earlier in the day. With only one, solitary
stage left on Sunady, Breen took no risks,
sealing his eight spot on the leader board.
7
Craig is assured of at least 4 more WRC
outings before the end of the year. “Poland
may be next for me but if anything
comes up in the meantime I will take
the opportunity with both hands. This
is the realisation of a dream for me and
I’ll so whatever it takes to hold on to this
opportunity. I was pleasantly surprised
with our pace in Sweden and I already
know there’s much more left to find as I
continue to learn the car.”

West Cork Rally March 12th - 13th 2016
News
The Quality Hotel West Cork Rally will
take place on the 12th & 13th March.
The event is the second round of the
Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac
Rally Championship, the opening round
of the FIA Celtic Trophy (part of the new
European Rally Trophy), the opening
round of the PlasticBags.ie Southern 4
Rally Championship and a round of the
Cork Motor Club Championship.
The Cork Motor Club announced that
the rally runs under an International
permit for only the second time, the
only previous time it did so was in 1986.
The 2014 &15 winner Donagh Kelly will
attempt to become the first driver to win
the rally three times in succession. With
Class 5 now being the highest class eligible
to win the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish
Tarmac Championship, the closeness of
the competition in Galway should give
spectators a lot to look forward to, with
championship leader Keith Cronin among
those expected to take part.
Eight stages on the Saturday and six
stages on the Sunday with centralised
servicing in Darrara Agricultural College.
in the coming weeks.
Donegal’s Donagh Kelly and Conor
Foley dominated a field of 90 cars at the
Abbeyleix Manor Hotel Stages. Kelly
repeated his 2015 victory and had a
faultless drive all day in his WRC Ford
Focus, winning this year’s event by 55.3
seconds ahead of Niall Maguire and
Enda Sherry in their Subaru WRC. Birr
was the opening round of both the Top
Part West Coast and Loughran Signs
Mildand East Rally Championships.
The weather conditions provided very
difficult conditions to the already
challenging stages. On the opener of the
six stage event. Kelly emerged from the
traps to take a 7.4 second lead from
Welsh driver Steve Wood, with Paddy
Mc Veigh a further 8 seconds behind.
Carlow’s George Condell set the pace
for the modified section in his class 13
Starlet, just two seconds behind Mc
Veigh and 18 seconds off the lead.
On the second test Kellly increased his
lead by 33.3 seconds to Mc Veigh who
gained second after Steve Wood crashed
his Subaru near the end of the stage
two. Niall Maguire climbed up to third
position before the first service despite
having some issues with the car stalling
on start lines.
Fourth Placed George Condell was
holding position despite having
a few major moments due to the
extremely slippy conditions. Kenny Mc
Kinstry(WRC Subaru) at fifth place
had a small rub with a bank causing no
damage, while Enda O Brien (Escort)
entered service in sixth. Barry Ryan
(Escort)in seventh, Kevin Kelleher
(Subaru) eight. Mick O Brien in his
newly acquired Fiesta was ninth while
Kevin Barrett rounded of the top ten.
Kevin Kelleher got into a rythem and
was up to fourth followed closely by
the escorts of Enda O Brien and Barry
Ryan. Mc Kinstry and Condell had
now dropped back to seventh and eight
while Trevor Mulligan (Escort) had now
climbed up to ninth despite having a few
battle scars after the first stage. The other
Condell David in his class 14 escort
rounded of the top ten after the next
loop.
Donagh Kelly emerged victorious after
the final stage with Magurie and Mc
Veigh rounding off the top 3. Cork’s
Kevin Kelleher (Subaru) fought hard all
day to secure fourth while Enda O Brien
had a superb drive to win the modified
class in his Mk2 escort. Barry Ryan and
George Condell took sixth and seventh
9
while also clinching first and second in
class thirteen. Trevor Mulligan finished
eighth,11.2 seconds ahead of David
Condell in ninth and both taking awards
in class fourteen. Kevin Barrett in his
Triton showers backed Subaru rounded
off the top ten. Shane Maguire won the
production group N Category and Keith
Power took the R.A.E front wheel drive
award while winning class 3 in his Clio.
Joey Carroll with club member Mark
Kirwin were the winners of class 11F
with Mark taking the John Finnegan
memorial cup for the highest place club
member. William Cavanagh and Oliva
Coen were second in class 12 in their
escort, while Frank Dwyer navigated
Thomas Lynch to second in class 11F.
David Forde and T.J O Brien won class
15 and Brian Kirwin and William Ryan
2016 Corrib Oil
Galway International
Rally
Garry Jennings and Rory Kennedy took victory on
the 2016 Corrib Oil Galway International Rally
event in their Subaru Impreza WRC which didn’t
miss a beat as he led from the start to win by over
three minutes from Keith Cronin & Mikie Galvin
in a Citroen DS3 R5. Alastair Fisher & Gordon
Noble completed the podium places in Fiesta R5
as the difficult conditions caused some high profile
retirements during the event, most notably former
tarmac champions Tim McNulty and Declan Boyle
both of whom crashed out.
The Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Rally
Championship had its traditional season opener in Galway
with Corrib Oil coming on board as title sponsors of the
Galway International Rally for the first time. With the
world rally cars no longer allowed to score points towards
the overall championship, much interest was focused on
the new breed of R5 cars and by extension the older S2000
cars from which the 2016 champion will come. Top seed
was Garry Jennings & Rory Kennedy in their fully rebuilt
Impreza WRC which had suffered a lot of damage in a fire
at the Ulster Rally last year. Declan & Brian Boyle, the 2014
Tarmac Champions, were at two in their Fiesta WRC and
hoping to repeat their 2014 win, while the absence of Derek
McGarrity at three meant Roy White and James O’Brien
were next up in another Fiesta WRC. Tim McNulty &
Paul Kiely were at five in a Mini WRC, and while Tim had
not competed in four years, the 2011 Tarmac champion
planned to attack from the start.
Dean Raftery was another non-starter at six, so Declan
Gallagher & Ryan Moore were next up at seven in a
Subaru Impreza WRC S8. This was the reigning Modified
Champions first outing in a WRC and as it was out of
homologation, it was to run in the National Category.
Keith Cronin & Mikie Galvan’s Citroen was the first
class 5 car on the road at 8, and they were followed by
Josh Moffett / Jason McKenna, Alastair Fisher / Gordon
Noble, Sam Moffett / Karl Atkinson and Stephen Wright
/ James Fulton all in Fiesta R5s which completed the top
ten starters. Others lying just outside the top ten were Joe
McGonigle, Desi Henry, Aaron McHale & Tommy Doyle
(all Skoda), while Brendan Cumiskey & Tomas Davies
were Fiesta mounted and Jonny Greer was in his usual
Citroen DS3 R5. There were fifteen stages scheduled with
nine on the first day around Killimor and Eyrecourt with
service at Portumna. The second day had service in Gort
and six stages, with the Black Road and Lough Cutra being
covered three times.
Saturday
Damp miserable conditions were prevalent as the 78
starters made their way to the first stage outside Kilreekil
and immediately it was Jennings who moved into a seven
Garry Jennings took his maiden win in Galway
second lead over Boyle. McNulty’s rally came to a sudden end just a
couple of miles in when he went off the road and damaged a radiator
while Tommy Doyle’s Skoda also crashed into retirement in the same
part of the stage. Several of the following cars got the time of Roy
White who admitted to being very cautious on that opening stage, so
it was Desi Henry who took advantage to move into third as he had a
clean run through the stage. By the end of the opening loop of three
stages Jennings had moved into a 21 second lead from Boyle, while
Henry held a narrow 0.1 second advantage over Cronin, with Sam
Moffett and Alastair Fisher also pushing very hard. Aaron McHale
was finding the switch to LHD very difficult and the conditions only
made things worse. Brendan Cumiskey and Tomas Davies were also
finding their Fiesta R5s a hard beast to figure out, with the Welshman
in particular affected by punctures and struggling to find a suitable
suspension setting.
The second loop was punctuated by very heavy showers and Henry
dropped from third to fifth on Stage 4 as he went wide on a gravelly
square left, such were the margins between the top R5 drivers. Stages
5 and 6 were curtailed as a result of accidents, first Declan Gallagher
crashed out on the fifth stage while Declan Boyle suffered the same
fate on the following stage. As the cars headed to the second service
of the day, Jennings now had a lead of almost two minutes over
Fisher with Cronin, Henry and Sam Moffett completing the top five.
In Group N David Guest led from Gus Kearney with William Mavitty
holding third place, while the smaller classes were led by Richard
Whelan (Class 3) and Callum Devine (Class 2).
The weather improved somewhat on the final loop and there was no
more major drama among the top crews although Roy White did lose
some time with a 360 spin on the seventh stage to remain in sixth
place. Jennings ended the day with over two minutes in hand from
Cronin while Fisher was just 2.5 seconds behind the Corkman. Desi
Henry and Sam Moffett were still within twenty seconds on Cronin
and well placed heading into the second day. Behind White in sixth
place lay Jonny Greer who had edged ahead of Josh Moffett, with
Stephen Wright and Joe McGonigle rounding off the top ten. Paul
Rowley, who had been lying just outside the top ten until the final
stage of the day, went off the road and got stuck, but re-joined the
rally under Rally 2 rules for the second day.
2 – Cronin / Galvin Citroen DS3 R5 + 2:27.7
3 – Fisher / Noble Fiesta R5 + 2:30.1
4 – Henry / Moynihan Fabia R5 + 2:44.2
5 – Moffett / Atkinson Fiesta R5 + 2:56.8
Sunday
The Black Road was the longest stage of the rally and Jennings
was once again fastest while Cronin moved six seconds clear
of Fisher, while Sam Moffett was quickest of the R5s to close
the gap to Henry to just three seconds. Moffett carried on the
momentum to the Lough Cutra stage with a fastest stage time to
move to fourth overall.
Heavy downpours for the second loop proved costly for Desi
Henry as he crashed out heavily on the Black Road which ruined
a fine drive. Cronin moved ahead by almost twenty seconds
clear of Fisher, while Moffett and White completed the top five.
Over the final three stages there was little movement at the top
as Jennings powered on to win by almost three and half minutes
from Cronin with Fisher in third place. Sam Moffett took fourth
with Roy White coming home in fifth place. Josh Moffett took
sixth place from Joe McGonigle who edged past Jonny Greer on
the final stage by just two seconds. Stephen Wright was much
happier with his car on the last loop of stages and came home
ninth with David Guest finishing tenth and winning Group N
into the bargain.
National Rally
Declan Gallagher the National favourite changed from his
popular Toyota Starlet to a Subaru Impreza WRC and the
reigning Modified Champion had a thirty second lead after
the first loop of stages from Chris Armstrong’s Escort. Eugene
Meegan & Sarah Whelan’s BMW held third place just thirteen
seconds ahead of Wesley Patterson & Johnny Baird who had
been held up a couple of times over the opening stages.
swung Patterson’s way on the second run over the Black Road
when Meegans BMW aquaplaned on standing water near the
beginning of the stage and bent a steering arm putting him out
of the rally. This left Patterson with a comfortable lead of over
a minute and he was able to cruise home to take the National
Rally by over a minute from Flaherty. Jason McSweeney had
a very good drive to third place ahead of the Escort of Patrick
McHugh. Andrew Fanning in his Ford Fiesta took fifth place
overall from Ross Marshalls Escort while Davy Armstrong and
John O’Sullivan came home seventh and eighth respectively.
Tommy Cahill and Justin Comer in a pair of Mitsubishi Lancers
rounded off the top ten.
Top 5 National Overall
Wesley Patterson won the National Rally in his mk2.
1 – Patterson / Baird Ford Escort
2 – Flaherty / Curley Ford Escort +1:09.5
3 – McSweeney / Quin Mitsubishi Lancer +1:39.5
4 – McHugh / O’Donnell Ford Escort +1:56.7
Historic Rally
Ray Cunningham & Adrian Cusack took the honours in the
Historic Rally with a winning margin of almost three minutes
in their Mini from David Goose & Richard Wardle in an
Escort. Luke McCarthy & David Hogan were third in a Porsche
911, while Alex Schmieder / Steffan Schmieder (Escort) and
Brendan McAree / JP McAree (Porsche 911) completed the
finishers. Retirement s included John Spiers & James O’Mahony
(accidents) Frank Cunningham (mechanical) and John Coyne
(clutch cable).
The second loop of stages was curtailed as a result of Gallagher’s
accident which propelled Meegan into the lead as Armstrong had
retired with a broken driveshaft. Patterson was now up to second
place 21 seconds behind and Tom Flaherty was upholding local
honours by holding third place. Jason McSweeney (Lancer),
Patrick McHugh & Davy Armstrong (both in Escorts) completed
the top six placings. The
last three stages of the
day saw no changes in
position for the top five,
but Patterson had closed
into just 1.8 seconds off
the lead which promised
to make the second day
fascinating.
The second day began
with Patterson taking the
lead only for Meegan to
grab it back after the first
pair of stages. However
the battle for supremacy
Ray Cunningham took honours in the Historic section.
Junior Rally
Kieran O’Donoghue & Peter Falvey took a dramatic victory in
the Junior Rally when they turned a four second deficit into a
four second win on the final stage over Mark Murphy & Michael
Hamilton. O’Donoghue led for the first couple of stages before
Murphy pulled ahead until the very last test. Mark O’Leary and
Ciaran Graal came home third in a Toyota Starlet.
Old News
Billy Coleman & Dan O’Sullivan had a runaway victory in
the Galway International Rally winning by over nine minutes
in their Escort Mk2. Ten Porsches started the event and one
of these was expected to continue their domination of Irish
Rallying. However Coleman put the pressure on from the
start and one by one his challengers fell away. Such was his
dominance over the second days Connemara stages that his
lead was up to 11 minutes before easing back somewhat on the
final days. Ken Shields and Peter Lyster were second overall in
their Porsche with John Taylor and Phil Short finishing third
after a troubled first day which cost him a lot of time.
It was a Rothmans Porsche 911 1-2
as Billy Coleman & Ronan Morgan
took a comfortable victory in
the Galway International Rally
from their team mates Saeed al
Hajri & John Spiller. Once rivals
Austin McHale & Bertie Fisher
hit trouble in their Opel Mantas it
was relatively plain sailing for the
Corkman who comfortably coped
with the tricky conditions which
included snow and ice on some stages. His Qatari team
mate al Hajri was delighted with his first trip to Ireland as he
prepared for the Circuit of Ireland. Ian Donaldson took the
final podium place in his clubman spec MG Metro 6R4.
After a fierce battle Bertie Fisher & Rory Kennedy came out
top in the Galway International Rally in their Subaru Impreza.
They were pushed hard all the way by James Cullen & Ellen
Morgan who were trading times for most of the weekend until
the second day when their Escort Cosworth hit standing water
and went off the road losing almost a minute. In the end Cullen
settled for second place and was well clear of Liam O’Callaghan
& James O’Brien in third place who were in their first outing in
a Toyota Celica ST205.
Eugene Donnelly & Paul Kiely in a Toyota Corolla WRC took
victory in the Galway International Rally with a two minute
victory over Eamon Boland & Francis Regan in a Subaru
Impreza WRC. The winning margin didn’t tell the whole story
though as Derek McGarrity challenged for the lead early on
only to suffer a puncture. Tim McNulty then took the fight to
Donnelly only to go off the road near the flying finish late on
the second day and was forced to retire. An impressive drive
from Peadar Hurson & Damien Connolly in an older spec
Subaru Impreza WRC saw them net third overall just ten
seconds behind Boland.
Looking Back 50 Years by Eddie Fitzgerald
Steve Griffin started competing in test
trials in 1962 in a GTS ( Gibney Trials
Special) , bought for him by his brothers
Dave and Shea , Steve qualified for the
Hewison Trophy at his first attempt , the
format was a I day trial unlike the modern
series run over 15 events. Steve won and
took the championship in 64 and 65 ,
Steve’s older brother Shea having 60, 61.
and 63. Steve and ambitions to race and
Dave lent his road going Cooper S for the
Park in 65 , second place was the result so
for 66 a racing mini was built , with all the
right bits , racing rallying and many other
branches of the sport got his attention , in
1994 he added the Sexton Trophy to the
sideboard becoming along with Pearse
Cahill the only drivers to win both awards
, the photo from 50 years ago shows Steve
taking a wide line at Ratra corner in 1966
, the flag man is Dougie Hughes known to
all for his involvement with Karting and
Midget Car Racing and more recently his
MC at rallies . 50 years on Steve is still
competing , driving Liam Plower’s midget
and working on an Anglia for Retro Rally
events .
Dermot Carnegie started competing in a
Dellow ( Ford Special) in test trials before
moving on Mini Coopers culminating
in his first Hewison Trophy win in 1967
12
going on to win it a further 9 times
, Dermot rallied up to the 80s then
Triton Showers
National Rally Championship
A new season of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship
was unveiled in Maynooth this afternoon with the popular series set
to visit eight different locations this year. It will begin in Ballina at
the beginning of next month and will traverse all four provinces as it
concludes in Killybegs in early October.
With a total of 16 events under the umbrella of Triton Showers series,
the organising committee rotate eight events on a biennial basis that
affords the series a wonderful opportunity to give competitors and
spectators a diverse range of rallying territory set against an equally
varied Irish landscape.
Speaking at the launch at the Glen Royal Hotel in Maynooth,
Kevin Barrett, M.D. of Triton Showers said, “Our first season as
title sponsors of the National Rally Championship has been hugely
encouraging. Having been involved with the Circuit of Ireland and
with our own Triton Showers backed cars we are very much aware of
what is involved in Irish motorsport. However, we are overwhelmed
with the manner our association with the series has been received by
competitors and spectators alike. The promotion of all eight events
within the series along with the awards ceremony has ensured that the
Triton Showers brand has received tremendous exposure through all
sections of the media.
This season, one of our cars will have a new livery. Paul’s N14 Subaru
is in the colours of Vado - a shower, tap and accessories manufacturer
that Triton purchased some three years ago and are now distributing
alongside our range of products.
This year, with eight different events in the Triton Showers National
Rally Championship, it offers another opportunity to continue to
showcase all that is good in Irish motorsport. Triton Showers would
like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all those
involved.”
Reigning Triton Showers National Rally champion Donegal’s Donagh
Kelly is not defending his title as he focuses on expanding his business
interests, fellow Donegal driver and former champion Declan Boyle
has earmarked the Mayo Rally as the first part of his national journey.
He is hoping that his Ford Fiesta WRC will be ready in time for the
season opener, otherwise, he will begin his quest on the Circuit of
Kerry.
The Triton Showers team of Kevin Barrett and Niall Maguire in their
Subaru WRC’s and the Group N duo of Paul Barrett (Subaru) and
Shane Maguire (Mitsubishi) will be an integral part of the campaign.
Clonmel’s Roy White, who gave his Ford Fiesta WRC its debut on
last year’s Fastnet Rally in Bantry is set for a full series campaign, he
has secured a top three finish in the last three national campaigns.
Meanwhile, London based Cork driver Michael O’Brien has acquired
the ex-Sam Moffett Ford Fiesta WRC and is setting his sights on a
national bid where he may switch to his 2008 specification Ford Focus
WRC for some of the events.
Speaking at the launch, Trevor Applegate, Sales Director, Triton
Showers remarked, “Year one of the Triton Showers National Rally
Championship has been a resounding success. We are immensely
proud to see Triton branding set against the splendid backdrop of
the beautiful Irish countryside throughout all eight events of the
championship, from the first event in County Laois in February to the
finale in Bantry in West Cork in October. The icing on the cake is that
the championship was broadcast via satellite and terrestrial TV to 52
countries, making for a truly global branding exercise. This, plus the
extensive media coverage yielded, along with the enthusiasm and pure
passion of everyone involved, makes it an outstanding partnership,
and one that we are delighted to be involved with for 2016.”
Also addressing the attendance at the Glen Royal Hotel, Chairman of
the Triton Showers National Rally Championship Committee, Richard
Talbot outlined an additional aspect to the 2016 series. “The 2015
Championship was a tremendous success with over three hundred
registered competitors across all categories. This year we expect to
have a very strong field between WRC, Group N, Group R, Modified
and Juniors. Included this year is The Smartpart ALMC Rally in July
– also a counting round of the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship that
will bring some of the best British national teams to Ireland. For that
event it is our intention to run a “Triton Showers Inter-Championship
Cup Competition. It will be a team event between the best Irish and
British competitors in a Ryder Cup type competition. This should
bring an extra competitive edge to the event and more importantly a
bit of fun for all concerned. Details have yet to be finalised but we feel
it will add value and interest to both championships.”
He added, “Triton Showers have been fantastic sponsors and we look
forward to working with Kevin and Trevor and all the team for this
year and beyond. We are sure the 2016 Championship will be the
biggest and best to date. The opening round in Mayo is expected to
have a very strong entry and we expect this trend to continue through
the other seven counting events.”
Valvoline Motorsport
Ireland National Forest
Rally Championship
Moffett Victorious As O’Brien Tops the Scores
on Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National
Forest Championship Opener!
Round one of the 2016 Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National
Forest Rally Championship, the Willie Loughman Memorial
Carrick on Suir Forest Rally saw 58 crews start the 8 stage
event, and 38 finishers.
Winners were Sam Moffett and James Fulton, making history
by winning in their Ford Fiesta R5, after an excellent run.
The Monaghan driver elected not to register for the series,
therefore maximum points went to 18 year old Patrick
O’Brien, after a magnificent rally in his DJ Rally Hire Group
N Evo 9. Patrick the reigning Valvoline Junior champion,
proved just why he took that title, as the move from the front
wheel drive Citroen C2 to the four wheel drive Evo seemed
easy for the Tyrone driver. I wasn’t sure what our plans were
this year, we had considered a go at the BRC but after the
start to the Irish series it’s tempting to continue with it. The
opposition may watch out, as the 2015 Billy Coleman Award
finalist is proving to be a real contender.
Another superb performance came from Omagh’s Niall
McCullagh and Ryan McCloskey in their class 20 specification
Mitsubishi Evo 6, a car they have been developing over the
past year. A stunning time on stage two put them into the lead,
an impressive lead in this older model Evo that they were to
hold until stage six. Sadly their rally ended on the penultimate
stage, when they slid off and got beached with no-one to help
push the car back onto the forest track. Also back the years in
Mitsubishi Evolution’s with an Evo 4 example, were Michael
Carbin and Darragh Kelly in their class 20 machine. The
Monaghan driver had a superb run to third overall despite
some front bumper damage evident after stage five. Behind
them were Liam Ryan and Keith Moriarty in their Evo 8. They
survived a big scare on stage four, but Liam was delighted,
this being his first outing since 2011. In fifth were Ger Lucey
and JJ Cremin in their similar car. Ger, third in the series in
2015, overcame early over-heating problems to claim that
position, and took a fastest time on stage three along the way.
The two-wheel drive racers were next up with Adrian
Hetherington and Gary Nolan in their 2.5 Escort taking
the honours, in what was a relatively drama free day by the
spectacular Escort pilot. “We had a great day, and the battles
were good. John and Mickey were never too far behind” said
Adrian. John Gordon was next up in his class 12 MK2 Escort,
the County Down driver suffering a puncture on stage two,
but recording a superb result in seventh. Indeed he finished
just 7.9 seconds in front of 2015 Valvoline two-wheel drive
champion- Mickey Conlon. An early casualty was Shane
McGirr who broke a drive-shaft in his Toyota Starlet on stage
one, but re-joined later in the event for practice and recorded
some fastest 2wd times.
Completing the top ten where a returning Dermot Kelly in his
Evo, the first outing for eleven years for the former forestry
David Condell in his MK2 despite breaking a shock absorber, and Derek
Mackeral in his Vauxhall Nova, who won the rallytrader.ie/ Kumho tyres Junior
category, collecting two tyres from Ears Motorsport Ireland. Shane Kenneally
was second in the Junior category in his MK2 Escort, despite an altercation
with a chicane. Eoin Crowley claimed third in his Peugeot 206.
Other important class winners were: Class 2- Graeme Colfer (Honda Integra),
Class 3-Emmett Lyons (Honda Integra), Class 9- Ruari Maguire (Vauxhall
The Smartpart
ALMC Stages
Donagh Kelly plans to compete on the ALMC Stages 2016.
The Smartpart ALMC Stages Rally
takes place on July 3rd and will be
headquartered at the Castle Arch
Hotel in Trim, Co. Meath. Stage
rallying continues to be the most
popular form of motorsport in
Ireland and the progression of Kris
Meeke (Dungannon) and Craig Breen
(Waterford) to being front runners
in the World Rally Championship
(WRC) is likely to see interest in
rallying grow further during 2016.
This year’s rally is particularly notable
for the fact
that it sees the
combination
of three very
competitive
championships
into one event
as crews from
the Triton
Showers
National Rally
Championship
(Ireland), the
MSA Asphalt
Rally Championship
(UK) and the Loughran Signs
Midlands East Rally Championship
(Ireland) go head-to-head on the
boreens and backroads of Co.
Meath. The meeting of the three
championships will give rally fans the
opportunity to see state-of-the-art
World Rally Cars (as used by the top
WRC teams), the all-new R5 spec cars
(used in the WRC2 category), unusual
cars such as the Welsh-built Darrian
SMARTPART
Both sides now...for Cronin
Keith Cronin native of Bantry, Co.
Cork and a three-time British Rally
Champion in 2009, 2010 and 2012 has
signed with the DGM Rally Team to
contest both the British and the Irish
Tarmac Championship. Cronin has
already laid down his mark in Ireland,
having already won the R5 category
in Galway. (see Galway International
Rally review in our TROA story)
“We already had the car, and with the
regulations allowing the R5 cars to be
the top class, this enabled us to keep
the costs down and compete in both
series. It’s geat to be back and we want
to have a good go again.” commented
Cronin.
Citroen’s arrival into the MSA
championship completes the full set
of current R5 cars in production as the
DS3 will go up against the Ford Fiesta,
Peugeot 208 T16, Skoda Fabia as well
as S2000 cars from Proton, Ford and
Skoda in the revitalised British MSA
series.
DGM stablemate
Jonny Greer will
also contest the
British and Irish
events in the
DS3 R5 and is
happy to be
a part of the
new-look BRC
series. “We are
both going to give it our best shot,
enjoy it and do the best we can. To be
able to bring the Citroën to the party
is great. The buzz around the series is
fantastic. I cannot remember it being
this big and exciting” enthused Greer.
News
that people are familiar with such as
the Ford Escort Mark II, Mitsubishi
Evo and many more.
Given the high caliber of competitors
who will be in attendance at the
Smartpart ALMC Stages Rally, Triton
Showers have very kindly sponsored
an “Inter-Championship Cup” which
will run on a UK vs Ireland basis. The
winning nation will be calculated by a
matchplay-style points system, similar
to that used in golf ’s Ryder Cup, with
the winning team taking the trophy
home.
Entries open on May 23rd for The
Lawrence Tomlinson
You could forgive a highly successful businessman and owner
of one of Britain’s most admired sports and racing car brands
for resting on his laurels, but nothing could be further from
the truth for Lawrence Tomlinson, the Chairman of Ginetta,
who is as determined as ever to create opportunities and
drive improvements across motorsport.
A mechanical engineer by trade, Tomlinson
made his name as the founding chairman
of LNT Group, the parent company of five
diverse businesses – with interests ranging
from care homes to construction – but it takes
just seconds of conversation to realise that
motorsport is his true passion.
Having started out importing classic cars into
the UK, Tomlinson has since overseen the
creation of some of the most popular cars in
British motorsport today. He has been on the
British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) board
of directors, had a stint as joint acting chief
executive of Silverstone Circuits Limited, and
even found time to win the GT2 class of the 24
Hours of Le Mans back in 2006. More recently,
he has been driving the Team LNT Ginetta
Nissan LMP3 in the VdeV Championship,
along with running his business empire, which
employs 2,000 people.
The combination of talent and determination
that has served Tomlinson so well quickly
becomes apparent when MSD presses him on
the difficulties of fitting four-hour endurance
races into such a hectic schedule. Let’s say he
approaches his racing just as he does any of his
business ventures.
“I go into the weekend with a plan,” he says.
“You don’t win by accident, so we put in the
time prior to the season and develop the car
mechanically, so it’s reliable. Turning up at the
race weekend is the easy part of it. You think
‘how am I going to be up on the top spot on
Sunday’ and you motivate all the team around
you to think about how you get the win, and
then work backwards from that.
“It’s not that dissimilar to what you need to do
in business in terms of getting a team around
you. When I’m actually in the car I think about
the mechanics of the car and not the balance
sheet.”
The balance sheet must have been on
Tomlinson’s mind, though, when just over a
decade ago he completed a deal for Ginetta,
a company that was making a “small profit”
at the time. “The history of the brand was
intriguing,” he says. “I tried to buy TVR but
a Russian guy (Nikolai Smolensky) bought
it. So Ginetta was an ideal platform for us to
develop our cars, because of the history of the
brand and what they did, which was providing
lightweight sports cars. British sports cars tied
in exactly with what I wanted.”
Doing things differently
In the decade or so since, Ginetta has become
embedded as a truly iconic, global motorsport
brand. Road cars such as the G40R and G60
have caught the public’s imagination, while
on track Ginetta now boasts three single
marque championships – the Ginetta Junior
Championship, the Ginetta Challenge and the
Ginetta GT Supercup – plus the Ginetta Racing
Drivers Club (GRDC), which was designed
specifically for the first time racing driver.
Under Tomlinson’s guidance, each of these
has become established as a highly respected
stepping-stone to the big time.
Having acknowledged that “Caterham did
a great job with the Academy, and still do”,
Tomlinson says one of his motivations was
for Ginetta to make motorsport even more
accessible. “With the superlights, for example,
when drivers explained to me what they were
doing I found it confusing – some look the
same but some are quicker than others,” he
says. “Whereas with Ginetta, we have put
people in the car and, especially with the
GRDC, they come along and drive the cars
to the limit and then move into a completely
different car with a different challenge. With
our cars you are moving into different racing
and you’re not stuck in a specific area. That’s
what we do differently.
“We have a very clear career path and
progression for drivers of all ability. And we are
also extremely good value! The GRDC package
is £30,000 and you get eight races, including
Brands GP, Silverstone GP, Rockingham
and Donington. It’s fabulous value and that
includes the car!”
With most young drivers harbouring
ambitions of one day making it into Formula
1, Tomlinson’s pride about the fact that Ginetta
can help youngsters get their careers off the
ground is palpable. “We see now that Ginetta
Juniors is the obvious step to familiarise your
potential F1 drivers or single-seater drivers
with procedures at a proper race event. It’s the
most prestigious event of its kind in the world
22

and I have never come across anything anywhere near it in terms of what
your driver learns,” he explains.
Using the multi-disciplined Ginetta G40, drivers aged from 14 to 17
compete in support races to the British Touring Car Championship,
receiving exposure rivalled by no other junior championship. “Being
part of the touring car package you have 30,000 fans, live TV, you’re
interviewed by the likes of Louise Goodman and Steve Ryder, and the
drivers learn so much,” Tomlinson explains. “So when people come out of
the Ginetta Juniors and move on, it gives them a really good advantage.”
A man in demand
Away from Ginetta, Tomlinson has applied his expertise in other areas of
the sport, including as a board member for the BRDC and then as joint
acting chief executive of Silverstone Circuits from late 2014 until early
2015. At the time, the company was in desperate need of leadership after
three senior executives had been suspended from their roles. During his
six months in the role, Tomlinson’s business acumen was an important
tool in starting to turn the tide at the home of the British Grand Prix.
“Silverstone is a great circuit and what I tried to do was unlock the
potential of the great people that had been at the circuit and running
it for many years,” he states. “I think I went a long way to doing that.
Silverstone Circuit is a happier place for the staff since I had my time
there. I think there have been some significant improvements and
cost reductions that needed to be undertaken, which probably should
have happened five or six years ago.” Tomlinson’s short-term goal was
multi-faceted – he wanted to “unlock the talent and empower them”,
significantly reduce costs in a manageable way, and to put the customer
at the centre of all that the circuit does. “The management team have
done a great job implementing this,” he says.
The time and energy invested into understanding the intricacies of
business, how to successfully implement a plan and, importantly, how to
build and maintain the support of those around him is among the many
reasons why Tomlinson finds himself as a man in demand. He has even
served as the government’s Entrepreneur in Residence in the Department
of Business, Innovation and Skills.
Making the effort to understand exactly what you’re working with is
equally important on track and Tomlinson is in no doubt that all drivers
can benefit from expanding their knowledge base, especially when it
comes to mechanics and engineering.
“Anyone that comes from an engineering background and knows the
intricacies of how a car works has an advantage over someone that
doesn’t,” he explains. “The number of times I’ve got into a car of a
gentleman driver and I’ve spotted something loose – whether it’s the diff
loose, or the prop shaft loose, or a track rod – and they’ve been driving
the car. Just knowing there is something wrong with the car is very
important, but it’s not always easy for a driver to relay that back to an
engineer. Being a driver, engineer, designer and owning the company is
a real shortcut.”
The benefits of supporting your on-track ability with engineering knowhow
is also highlighted by one of Britain’s best-known racing drivers,
Nigel Mansell, who lined up alongside Tomlinson in the 1000km of
Silverstone in 2009 in the Ginetta-Zytek GZ09S. Remembering his
experience of sharing the car with Mansell, Tomlinson says: “He’s an
extremely determined guy in everything he does. He’s focused on
whatever he is doing at that time and determined to be a success, whether
it’s golf or motor racing.
“But what surprised me most about him was his ability to engineer the
car. He’s a fantastic engineer and really helped us to develop that car. We
worked together with Nigel and Greg Mansell (Nigel’s son) in the Team
LNT car. He had a lot of thoughts, and put in the motorsport environment
he’s a great engineer, but he also gave it 100% as a driver, even though at
that point he was in his mid-fifties!”
Tomlinson’s own engineering nous is perhaps best highlighted by the
Ginetta G50, which has emerged as one of the most popular cars in
motorsport, was named Autosport’s Car of the Year in 2008 and, incredibly,
was designed and built within six months. According to Tomlinson, the
goal was to create a car that was fun to drive – “a bit lairy if anything”
– with a plan in mind for it to replace the TVR Tuscan Challenge onemake
series. Following feedback and refinement, including a focus on
making it more aerodynamic, the Ginetta G50 as we know it was born. In
Tomlinson’s own words, however, “the G55 is much more aerodynamic
and a natural successor to the G50”.
It’s all about enjoyment
For Tomlinson the G50 project was “great fun” and it is exactly this – fun
– that he hopes to instil in motorsport in the future. When MSD asks him
about his plans for Ginetta over the next decade his outlook is refreshing
– focusing first on ensuring that people get the most enjoyment as
possible out of the sport. “We always welcome people to get involved and
the next five to 10 years will pretty much be about doing much more of
the same, which is to focus on our customers and motorsport in general,
and develop cars that people like to have fun in.
“A lot of people in the sport have forgotten about the customer. Either it’s
a lot of fun, or people stop doing it and go out of business. They take a lot
of money off people, but they don’t like it if they don’t see the value in it.
We want to engage with anyone in motorsport who wants to have fun.”
In a sport that has become somewhat renowned for its high entry costs
and perceived low levels of accessibility, Tomlinson is playing a vital role
in creating much-needed opportunities across the board. In his own
New Fiesta ST Racing Championship
Fiesta ST
had the following to say about the introduction
of the new series. “The class will provide
a stepping stone for current Fiesta drivers
and new drivers who want to go racing on a
limited budget. The rules both technical and
sporting will be water tight and the idea is that
talent and close racing will be the winner”.
Starting in 2016 the Fiesta ST Series will run
alongside the current Fiesta class at all Mondello
Park Car Race events and like the original
championship it will remain under the control of
Mondello Park. The championship will be open
to standard versions of the Fiesta ST 150 model
which were built as ST’s between 2004 and 2008.
A new series for more powerful Fiesta ST models will
be sponsored by leading Tyre Trade supplier Patch Tyre
Equipment.
The current championship for 1250cc Fiestas has brought
many new and returning drivers into regular competition
and some of those drivers have expressed a desire to move on
to something a bit quicker, but still as cost effective. The new
Fiesta ST series will offer that progression, while sticking with a
near standard car and tightly controlled regulations.
Long time Saloon and now Fiesta racer, Barry Barrable,
initiated the efforts to get the new series up and running, he
Formula Sheane
Preview
The 2016 Formula Sheane season is on the cusp of the horizon
kicking off on April 17th with a double header on Mondello Parks
National Circuit. The series then heads off across the Irish Sea to
compete on the cliffs of the spectacular Anglesey Race Circuit in
North Wales in May as Ireland’s only internationally racing single
seater series where it will contest two more rounds with a special
trophy race to be included in the line-up. In June, its back to Mondello
Park’s International Circuit, the longer twisty layout always
throws up a few surprises in the mix. In July and August it’s up to
the ultra-fast Kirkistown Race Circuit for four rounds, the long
straights and flat out 140 mph turn one really test the drivers. The
second visit in August will crown the Northern Irish Championship
winner for the second consecutive year. The conclusion of a
whole years racing comes down to the final race weekend of the
year for the Leinster Trophy Races on Mondello’s International
loop. For the first time in many years, Formula Sheane will be racing
for prize money at the 12th and final race of the year alongside
one of the prestigious Leinster Motor Club trophies.
2016 is looking more competitive than ever with seven different
race winners competing for this year’s honours and a handful of
drivers that have finished on the podium in the past who are chasing
an elusive first win in the series. The Scholarship Championship
for Rookie drivers is really heating up, with several drivers
who have taken wins in the Championship returning to
see can they take the big prize this season. Races are more
often won by tenths of seconds and this year is certainly no
different. The new revised rear wing that was introduced
to several cars last year are to be made compulsory to all
cars this season and the introduction of a “Fan Cam” system
will give fans and spectators of the series a little more
involvement with the drivers. The “Fan Cam” system is a
voting system that will place a Go-Pro on the competitor’s
cars with the most votes at each race weekend. Fans and
spectators will be given the chance to vote on the Formula
Sheane Facebook page on the week prior to the race, voting
will last from the Monday to the Thursday. Formula
Sheane now enters its 15th competitive season and shows
no signs of slowing down.
mark, the highest it’s been for a number of years except for the
joint British round last year. Along with the surge in entries
the Irish Rallycross Committee were given a second reason to
celebrate as they secured a new sponsorship deal with the Dublin
based company “Parts for Cars”.
Derek Tohill takes flight on a full programme of events in the
FIA European Rallycross Championship & IRX 2016, driving an
Olsbergs MSE built Ford Fiesta Supercar.
Derek Tohill from Parts for Cars, commented on the new
sponsorship deal “We have had a long association with the Irish
Rallycross Championship (IRX) and we are delighted to be back
again as title sponsors to the Championship”.
The Parts for Cars Irish Rallycross Championship will be a 7
round championship this year to be run over 3 different circuits,
Mondello Park, Tynagh and Pembrey. It’s the first time ever that 3
different circuits will be used and first time in 5 years that a round
will be held overseas with a double header scheduled for Pembrey
in July (Chamionship dates below).
The boost in numbers this year is largely down to the addition of
a new budget class for 1.25 Zetec Fiestas which was introduced
late last year. 16 Fiestas are entered for Round 1, it looks like a lot
of them have come back for another go at rallycross in Mondello
Park.
All the regular drivers are back again this year to compete for
class honours. Notably, Brendan Coyne, brother to the current
Champion Willie Coyne, will return to action this year after a few
years out which is great to see. The Tallaght man will be back in
his super quick 1600cc Super Modified Fiesta competing in Class
4.
Peter Mc Garry will make the move up to super modified in his
very exciting super charged 205 GTI. Peter ran this car a few
times last year and really impressed, he should be on the pace for
the new season and will be definitely be one to watch.
In the Super Class, Derek Tohill has entered his 600BHP Olsbergs
4x4 Fiesta for round 1. The Parts for Cars backed driver will be
competing in the full European Rallycross Championship this year
and March 6th in Mondello Park will give him the opportunity to
put this beast of a car through its paces and get some valuable seat
time ahead of the European season opener in April.
IRX are always happy to hear from people who might be interested
in joining the sport. There are exciting times ahead for IRX so
make contact with Colin Dowling for any queries or information
on 087-7868392 or dowlingcolin81@gmail.com. You can also
Hillclimb
& Sprint
The 2016 Naylor Engineering
Irish Hillclimb & Sprint
Championship is just a few
weeks away and already drivers
are raring to go! There’s a
sprint in Kirkistown on 19th
March that many of the regular
Hillclimb competitors may
take advantage of for some preseason
testing/shake-down.
Once again the championship
will visit some of the most
scenic areas of Ireland, from the
haunting beauty of the Burren
in Co Clare to the spectacular
Knockalla hill in Donegal with
its stunning views of the north
Atlantic and the beautiful
Portsalon beach.
One wonderful aspect about
Hillclimbing is…there’s a class
for practically everything and
everyone. It’s not all about
having the fastest car out
there. In fact one of the best
and most entertaining classes
of 2015 was the Italian mob.
The Fiat Cinquecento’s, this
class offers a very cost effective
way of entering the world of
Motorsport, with a competitive
car only costing €2,000. It really
is fun to take a small car like
this by the scruff-of-the-neck
and throw it around a hill or
race track. Watch out for the
Fiat Cinquecento’s in 2016 they
really are the entertainers of the
championship.
Joe Courtney, the current
Hillclimb champion has his
eyes firmly fixed on the year
ahead and securing a second
consecutive title. He is an
amazing driver to watch in
action and makes it all look
so very easy as he guides his
Reynard 913 at high speed
through the tightest of corners.
Watch out too for Rory (granddad)
Stephens in his Radical
SR8. Joe Courtney will need to
keep an eye on his mirrors this
year as Rory will also have his
eyes on the title.
In 2015 Saloon Champion Eanna Carroll
defended his title driving a 450bhp Turbo
Honda Civic against Martin Treacy in his fire
breathing Mitsubishi Evo. Treacy winning 5
out of the 11 rounds, and Carroll winning 6,
this was a spectacular battle between the 2 top
saloons, their 2015 battle was decided on the
last weekend of the Championship.
There’s no doubt about it; The Irish Hillclimb
& Sprint championship is one of the most
vibrant and entertaining forms of motorsport.
It has a wonderful social and family side to it
and in the paddock you’ll always hear tall tales
of amazing bravery and the odd excuse for a
silly moment on the hill. You can find all the
news and results on www.irishhillclimb.com
Or why not drop by an event, watch the action
and say hello?
SEAT Supercup
After a very successful
introduction in 2015 with the
running of a 10-round Pilot
Series, the SEAT Supercup
Ireland is attracing big interesting
having been awarded Motorsport
Ireland National Championship
status for 2016. Created around
SEAT Sport’s ultra successful
factory built Leon Supercopa,
the inaugural SEAT Supercup
season produced 5-different
race winners with Motorsport
Ireland’s prestigious Young
Racing Driver of the Year Award
winner Niall Murray going
on to be crowned champion.
Developing 300bhp from its
1984cc Turbo charged 4-cylinder
engine, this is delivered to
front wheels through a 6-speed
DSG gearbox with Yokohama
250/650R18 slicks providing
traction - drivers limited to 14
race tyres for the expanded 12
Rounds/6 events 2016 season.
Despite the high performance of
the Leon Supercopa, maintenance
costs are surprisingly low as
it uses many standard SEAT
components. Backed by both
SEAT Ireland and Yokohama,
the new season kicks off on April
17th with a double header on the
National circuit at Mondello Park.
From there it travels to Northern
Ireland in May to the high speed
Bishopscourt circuit. Returning
to Mondello in June, Rounds 5 &
6 will be the first of two meetings
on the International circuit, the
second being the concluding
rounds held over the Leinster
Trophy weekend in September.
With 11 Supercopas already in
the country, the stage is set for
a high profile season of exciting
racing action and you can follow
Stevies Sixth Hewison
With 12 of the proposed 14 rounds
of the 2015/2016 Hewison Autotest
Championship now run, Northern
Irelands Stephen Ferguson, driving a Mini
Special, has claimed his sixth consecutive
Championship Title.
The season started well for Lyons who
had wins on the opening two rounds in
Cork last September while Ferguson only
managed fourth overall both days. Paul
Blair and Darren Quille shared the spoils in
the Sportscar class while Andrew Blair and
Liam Crostan both bagged a class win each
in the Large Saloon class.
Carlow Car Club were next to host a double
header weekend where Paul Blair (Stryker)
topped the timesheets on the Saturday
and Stevie Ferguson was the victor on the
Sunday round, best in the Mini class on
both days was Eamonn Byrne. Andrew Blair
scored another class win on the Saturday
in his Nova while David Thompson took
victory on the Sunday. Darren Quille was
again quickest Sportscar on the Sunday
round in his Westfield.
Ferguson continued his good form at the
Galway event in October clinching another
FTD, Byrne and Quille were tops in the
Mini and Sportscar classes again while
Paul Mooney took the honours in the Large
Saloon class.
The 2015/16 season started back in early
September with a “Season-Starter” Open
Day on Frank Lenehan’s farm up in
Kilternan. A new initiative supported by
the MI Trials Committee which allowed
competitors the opportunity to invite
friends and other car enthusiasts along
to demonstrate Sporting Trials as a sport,
which upto now has been a very well kept
secret. Watch out for this Open Day in
2016.
Garda Siochana Motor Club, Leinster
Motor Club and The Motor Enthusiasts
Club run the events, as of this stage in the
season, there have been 12 events since
September, basically 1 event every 2 weeks.
There are 4 more events scheduled this
season finishing-up with a LMC 2-day Trial
in mid-April.
In the first half of the season, there were
two men leading the way in clocking-up
Premier Awards. Jonathan Ralph, a relative
newcomer to the sport was out of the traps
It was Mooney who was quickest at round
six which was run by Weastmeath and
District MC, but not in his usual Nova.
Having spent a couple of years building a
new car he gave it a winning debut. The
Nova engine Mini Special turned a lot of
heads and drew lots of attention when
the times were shown. Eamonn Byrne
was again best of the Minis with David
Thompson taking another win in the Large
Saloon class and Tom Devaney was best of
the Sportscar class.
Mondello Park was the venue for Round 7
which was run by the Trials Drivers Club,
Sam Bowden took victory here with Robin
Lyons topping the Mini class while Timmy
Lynch (Westfield) and David Thompson
took wins in the Sportcar and Large Saloon
classes.
Round 8, in Longford, saw Lyons back at
the top of the time sheets ahead of Ferguson
and Byrne. Lynch and Thompson were best
in their respective classes again.
Rounds 9 & 10 were run by Carrick on
Suir MC in Waterford and Ferguson was
back to his winning ways taking the spoils
on both days to stretch his lead in the
Championship. Lyons and Byrne shared
the Mini class wins over the weekend with
Quille and Lynch both scoring a win in the
Sportscar class. Mark King made a welcome
really quickly, impressively winning the first
2 events driving 2 different cars, first in his
own Wilson-Suzuki and second while test
driving a Kilkenny-Yamaha, by Christmas,
Ralph’s tally of wins was 3. Fergil Gregory
driving his Erskine-Yamaha also achieved
3 wins before Christmas. Gregory has been
keeping everyone on their toes, he has not
finished outside of the top 10 so far this
season.
However, since Christmas the tide has
changed and some different names have
risen to the top. Jonathan Fildes and Brian
Conlon have both made comebacks to
the sport since Christmas and both have
pulled-off 1 Premier award each. The other
Premiers have been won by Paul Needham
(Erskine-Yamaha), Morgan Evans (MOG
Honda), Tony Farrell (Erskine-S&S) and
most recently on February 20th, David
Meeke (BD-Opel) managed to win the LMC
Lincoln & Nolan Cup, his first Premier for
over 20 years in Ballybrew, Enniskerry, his
home event, living only a mile up the road.
36
Auto Tests
Stephen Ferguson, has claimed a sixth
consecutive Hewison Title.
return to autotesting and was rewarded with
a class win on round 9 while Thompson
took the Large Saloon win at round 10.
Ferguson took win number 5 at the
Laois RSC round to increase his margin
over Lyons in the Championship. Lynch
and Thompson were again best in their
respective classes.
Round 12 saw Guy Foster(Mini Spl) take the
win in Monaghan from Ferguson who had
to do an engine-gearbox change during the
day. However with Lyons failing to score
points Fegusons second place was enough to
guarantee him the 2015/2016 Championship.
Chris Grimes took the Mini Class win with
Darren Quille gaining another Sportscar
class win.
Words and Photo: Peespeed.com
Sporting Trials
Unusually, no rear-engined VW’s have
managed an overall Premier yet this season.
Joe and Siobhan McCann, Enda Byrne and
John Bolton all seem to be knocking on
the door with consistent top 10 finishes. It
can’t be long before one of them can set the
record straight - 4 more chances left this
season!!
