Documentary
The Death of Merit [44] is a part
of a series of efforts by InSight
foundation to document caste based
discrimination prevalent in institutes
of higher education that has resulted
in large number of suicides of Dalit
students in Indian campuses. Manish
Kumar Guddolian (first row, right), aged
20 years, was a 2 nd year student at IIT
Roorkee. He allegedly committed suicide
by jumping from the 5 th floor of his hostel
on 6 th Feb 2011. In addition to the story
of Manish, this series of documentaries
has examined the alleged suicides of
Dalit students Balmukund Bharti (first
row, left) and Senthil Kumar (first row,
middle) among others.
