Food for Thought

Let me welcome you to the 2008
Farmer’s Directory
The River and Countryside Group is a collection
of Farmers, Gamekeepers, Estate Managers and
Angling Clubs. With the support of Wear Valley
District Council and Stanhope Market Towns
Programme, who endorse local food and the
initiative of cutting down food miles, we would
like to share with you the opportunity to access
the wonderful local food produce which our
members take great care and pride in producing.
Our Farmers are passionate about rearing and
producing quality local foods at good value which
can be brought to you direct from family run
farms here in the heart of the beautiful dales.
Have you ever gone to the supermarket and wondered what breed your joint of meat has
come from? Now with the use of our directory you can identify exactly what you are
eating, how and where it is environmentally produced, even down to traditional rearing
methods and natural feeding.
We hope you will enjoy looking through our directory and will find it a useful tool, giving
greater choice.
Thank you for your support.
Lambs at Drygill are born and reared naturally in upland meadows and pastured amongst a host of wild
plants which form their diet. They are naturally produced using traditional farming techniques. This farming
system produces lamb which is succulent, sweet and full of flavour. Finished lambs travel less than 2 miles to
a local abattoir for slaughter. They are then hung, expertly butchered and packed for delivery. What is lamb,
hogget and mutton? Lamb is less than one year old and has a mild flavour. It requires short cooking times.
Hogget is slightly older, from one to two years old. It has a more intense flavour. It requires a bit longer to
cook and is more suited to roasting, stewing and braising (also very good in a curry!)

The Lambman, Jimmy Bell, is a champion supporter of local food and produce in the north east and is
constantly battling to reduce food miles and food security in our region. The Bell family has farmed in the
Morpeth area for over 400 years. We changed our farming practice 15 years ago by joining the Countryside
Stewardship Scheme which entails, reducing stocking rates, planting hedges, building ponds and not using
pesticides or fertilizer. Eight years ago we converted a redundant building into an on farm butchery. The lamb
produced from Wingates Farm is sold at farmers markets throughout the region.
Beef and Lamb is really delicious and tender from Greenwell Farm. Here we grow corn and lupins to feed to
our animals during the winter. From spring to autumn they are turned outside to the fields to feed from fresh
grass. Jamie Oliver stayed here and used our Beef whilst filming some of the School Dinner programmes from
the North East. You can order a selection box with Beef and Lamb or a box of just Lamb or Longhorn Beef
My name is Claire Everitt and I farm a small hill farm above Stanhope in Weardale. In 2007 the farm was
registered as a produce and packing station for free range eggs. Hens are free to roam, perch and feed as
they like. Eggs are delivered to local shops, B & B’s and pubs. I am a member of both the RSPCA’s Freedom
Food scheme and CMI animal welfare schemes for cattle and sheep. Pure Blonde d’Aquitaine are kept along
side Beltex sheep. Lambs are reared naturally on grass and are also delivered locally.

Born and raised on our hill farm in Teesdale, lamb grow naturally on our high pasture and are allowed to
mature slowly to produce a meat that is full of flavour. Mutton has long been overlooked but is now having
a revival. Once you’ve tried it you’ll be hooked. Mutton is a versatile meat, either under the grill or even in the
slow cooker with whole or half muttons available for the freezer (18kg or 9kg) or for sale by the joint. From
the farm there is something for all pockets.

We produce quality not quantity. Our closed herd roam free in an oak and beech wood so that the pigs can
do what they do naturally, forage, as well as giving a diet of natural crops grown by ourselves on the farm or
from other local farmers. The herd has the best life we can give them and this reflects in the taste of the
Pork. We are always looking for new ways to improve things for the herd and will continue to do so. This
ensures that our Pork is top of the range and happy pigs too.

At Wadley Farm we produce a wide range of products including mutton and lamb.We provide all animals
with the care and attention they deserve, allowing them to live the most natural life possible. Mutton is a very
particular favourite as our animals are more mature, massively improving the flavour. The lambs we produce
are bred from rare and minority breeds as well as commercial sheep. The rare breeds are well known for
their improved flavour which is derived from the slow maturity of the meat.
