14 SpotlightOn Who is your NUHonours is how we celebrate our exceptional staff and your hospital heroes, whether on the frontline or behind the scenes, and this year we also celebrate 10 years of NUH. Nominations for NUHonours 2016 open 23 May. If someone has made a difference to you or a loved one then a NUHonours nomination is a great way to say thanks and give that person recognition for their work. The overall winners will be decided at an awards celebration night on 25 November. Chief Executive Peter Homa said: “We know how much these awards mean to staff. They really do boost morale, strengthen teamwork and reward those who go above and beyond to provide caring, safe and thoughtful care. “Please take the time to nominate a team or member of staff at our hospitals who you feel have ‘gone the extra mile’ in their daily work and are true to NUH’s ‘we are here for you’ values.” We have revamped the categories since last year, including a special contribution award. Once nominations close judging panels – one for each category – will sit to create a shortlist of three for each award. We include patients in our panels to ensure all voices are heard in making this decision. This year’s categories are: Divisional Awards – This Award goes to the individual /team in each Division who has ‘gone the extra mile’ to improve patient, carer or staff experience. There will be one winner per Division • Cancer and Associated Specialties Division Award • Clinical Support Division Award • Medicine Division Award • Surgery Division Award • Family Health Division Award Behind the Scenes Award The Trust has Corporate Services working behind the scenes to ensure the smoothrunning of the organisation. This award is to recognise an unsung hero or team amongst the support staff that consistently performs above and beyond the call of duty in carrying out their day-to-day work. Estates and Facilities Award Recognising colleagues in our Estates and Facilities team (includes cleaners, porters, chefs, linen and laundry) who have gone above and beyond to deliver excellent patient experience. Patient Champion of the Year Award Recognise patients who have made outstanding contributions to NUH in the last year. 15 Volunteer of the Year Award This Award is for an individual or team (either registered NUH volunteers or ‘other’ volunteers) that has worked in partnership with NUH, giving up their unpaid time for the benefit of patients, carers and staff. Nottingham Hospitals Charity Champion Award This Award recognises staff who have dedicated their time and energy to fundraising activities that benefit Nottingham Hospitals Charity. They have done this to support the Charity’s mission to be at the heart of caring, for the benefit of patients and the staff who have cared for them. Research Impact of the Year Award For an individual, team or service that has raised the profile of research. Nominations should include evidence of at least one of the following: • Research taking place in a new part of the organisation • Leading campaigns that have increased research participation by patients • Working with the Life Sciences Industry to deliver high quality research • Initiatives to improve the patient experience when taking part in research • Service improvements, improved patient outcomes and/or transformed routine clinical practice by implementing clinical research study findings Team of the Year Award Awarded to an outstanding team (clinical or non-clinical) working anywhere within the Trust, who deliver exceptional results for patients/their colleagues/their service by working together as a team to achieve their goals. Better Futures Award Recognises individuals/teams who demonstrate a commitment to the community through: • Environmentally-friendly initiatives • Education, teaching, training and learning opportunities • Creating employment opportunities • Community partnership Outstanding Contribution to Patient Care Award In the year we celebrate 10 years of NUH, we recognise an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to patient care over the last decade. The winner of this award will be chosen by the NUH Chief Executive, Peter Homa. Celebrating our staff Ela honoured at national NHS apprenticeship awards An NHS apprentice has been recognised for making an outstanding contribution to NUH. Ela Roe, an apprentice working in our HRdepartment, was one of 12 apprentices across England, each representing a health region, who were invited to meet Health Minister Ben Gummer as part of the national NHS apprenticeship awards in Westminster. Ela said: “I really enjoy working at NUH because of the amount of support I receive from my colleagues and the huge amount of opportunities I have been given. The apprenticeship has given me a practical insight into the job Nottingham Hospitals Radio is multi-award winner Congratulations to Nottingham Hospitals Radio for multiple wins at the 2016 National Hospital Radio awards. that I would like to pursue in the future. I am learning, while gaining valuable experience.” Nottingham doctor commended for commitment to research A consultant physician and Director of Research and Innovation at NUH has been presented with a special award for his significant contribution to commercial research in the NHS. Dr Steve Ryder was one of five researchers in the UK recognised by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) for his outstanding contribution to commercial research over the past ten years. The station won the Bronze award for Best Programme with Multiple Presenters with The Jake and Julie Show, Bronze Award for Best Specialist Music Programme with The Country Store (presented by Stephen Hall) and Winners from our 2015 NUHonours Awards night Silver Award for Best Male Presenter – Rajiv Hasan. The awards saw Rajiv go one better than last year when he won bronze for the same award. Rajiv said he is “delighted with the results”. Fingers crossed he’ll win the gold in 2017! Midwives win national award Staff from NUH have won one of the UK’s top midwifery prizes at the Royal College of Midwives’ (RCM) Annual Midwifery Awards. Midwives Josh Downey and Katie Jones picked up the RCM I-Folio Award for Partnership Working on behalf of the Trust. The award was given for improved team working in maternity services, through the introduction of Shared Governance. Shared Governance sees frontline midwives forming ‘councils’ with decision making powers about services. The councils work in collaboration with managers to help bring about improvements. He said: “Commercial research provides patients with access to many new drugs and treatments, which can achieve better clinical outcomes and potentially benefit all NHS patients in the future. It has been a real privilege to be involved in these lifechanging studies.” A further five researchers, based at NUH and The University of Nottingham were also recognised at the event. They were Professor Philip Bath, Professor Stephen Chan, Dr Patrick Davies, Dr Christopher Gough and Professor Nikola Sprigg. Sponsors 2016 Healthcare Science award NUH has been named Healthcare Scientist Provider Organisation of the Year at the annual Chief Scientific Officer Healthcare Science Awards. The award is presented to those provider organisations that support and recognise the contribution of healthcare science to high quality patient services, not only within healthcare science itself but more broadly across the organisations with multi-disciplinary teams and projects.
