Ponderings
Happy Easter to you all, or, as we say in church , He is Risen!
I hope you had a lovely Easter Break especially if you are in full time
employment and have actually managed to take the time off. A lot of work
these days doesn't recognise even our traditional Christian holidays and
people are being asked to work to cover what needs to be done for a 24
hour and 7 day a week society. I was so pleased when the British
Government's bill to extend Sunday trading hours was defeated. We all
need a break and time to be with our families and to enjoy some leisure
time.
Of course we all know that vicars only work on Sunday's (LOL) but we also
manage to take some time to be with our friends and family too. For those
people who have what is really a 24/7 job, who look after others in their
homes or in hospital or hospice it is important for them to look after their
own health. One thing we can do to help these care workers is to give them
a big thank you and really let them know you appreciate them whenever
possible.
As the weather gets warmer and the sun comes out it is time to come out of
our own hibernation. It's not only the clocks that 'Spring Forward' we can do
that too! Time to take care of your health by joining the local walking group
or some of the keep fit courses that run regularly in our villages.
If it's your brain that wants exercise and not your body then do get tickets to
The quiz night at 7.15 on Saturday 23rd April at Sible Hedingham Village
Hall. You don't have to be "Mastermind" and It won't be a "Pointless"
evening, you might turn out to be a bit of an "egg-head".
The joining together of our 7 Parishes has already led to some good
collaborations and the next joint service will be on April 10th at 9.30 at
Stambourne church with Bishop Roger the Bishop of Colchester taking the
service.
The first weekend of March is now traditionally the London Live Monopoly Run , an
event organised by a scouting district south of London and now in its 19th year . We had
three teams taking part and set off bright and early from behind the Co-op in Swan
Street bright and early on Saturday 5th March in a minibus and car. Arriving at Island
Gardens on the Isle of Dogs we took the DLR and Jubilee Line to Waterloo where the
information regarding the day was received , last minute plans made and at 9.30 am
everyone set off .Our teams were initially going in different directions , one team headed
to the London Clink , another went to Mayfair while the third went to Euston , thereafter
making their way around London and the “virtual “ monopoly board . Meeting them
back at Greenwich they seemed to have all had a good time , final positions were not
high but its the participation that counts and the enjoyment !! We had a bingo night a
few weeks ago , although often thought to be an older persons game when chocolate as
prizes is on offer then the “eyes down “ becomes more interesting . !! Looking forward
now to better weather and longer evenings, hikes , camps etc . April is going to be busy
with Legoland and D of E hikes and then planning for the Essex Jamboree .
We meet at Wooding Lodge , Castle Hedingham 7.30pm -9.30 pm every
Wednesday during a school term .
Garden Club
Hello everyone by the time you are reading this Easter would have come and gone
and we will be starting to get busy in our own gardens.I am so pleased to say that
the first meeting of 2016 was a great success the Halstead In Bloom Team gave us
such an interesting insight into how much time and dedication the volunteers give
to the planning and planting of each year’s entry, they are so enthusiastic and make
Halstead look so lovely, our thanks to them all.
Healthy is Dull and Boring?
So many of us make grand statements at the start of a year,
month, week that we are going to eat this, not eat that,
move more, try something different. Then 2 days, 2 weeks,
For many there is also still a perception that a
Hi everyone as I am writing this we are busy preparing for our Nostalgic Supper
Evening, this gives us an opportunity to invite guests from the three other W.I.s in
our local group .During the evening members will be able to look at the
scrapbooks from previous events and activities which will raise quite a laugh as
some of us were many years younger in the photographs,as one says those were
the days .Members have very generously agreed to contribute quches, salads, cakes
etc for the supper, as we have some great cooks amongst us it should all be
delicious ,we also have a quiz or two planned so it should be a great evening I
should add that the competition for the evening is A Carved Vegetable wonder
what some members will come up with, especially those with a warped sense of
humour what can I mean!
Two of our members Maureen Bantock and Jackie Hawkes have been very busy
sorting out our programme for 2016/17 this is very time consuming and we are
extremely grateful to them for their hard work, speakers will include Andy Bennett
on A View From Space,Jane Stone Living And Working In Quatar,Bryan Thurlow
We'll’Meet Again An Evacuees Story, and Angela Alive And Kicking on Morris
And Clog Dancing wow that should be a laugh,I think you will agree they have
quite a programme arranged I will give details of others next month, thanks ladies.
Several members attended the Essex Federation Annual General Meeting in
Southend, these are always good events with accomplished speakers and a chance
to do some shopping at the market stalls,it is amazing to see so many women
Members and guests had an amazing evening on 19 February when Oggie
Weldon, of Cappelli di Oggi, told us about the history of millinery and her
experiences and creations as a couture milliner, when her hitherto hobby turned
into a career change. Oggie showed us the ‘blocking’ process, making the hat
crown, and explained the different techniques. Several ‘titbits’ of information
were passed on including the fact that fascinators were invented in 1784 to avoid
hat tax!! After the talk, we were able to try on the incredible selection of hats,
fascinators, perchers etc etc which were available and many admiring comments
were made. Thanks also to the hostesses for the evening.
On April 15 we are having our annual meal out, once again at the Moot House,
much beloved by many of the members, and look forward to good food, good
company and a lovely social evening.
On 13 May, Brian Carline will present his talk entitled ‘Tripe ‘n’ Trotters’, but
more details about that next month. All meetings take place at the Memorial
Hall, Castle Hedingham, starting at 7.45 pm, unless otherwise stated.
More coach trips are planned, the first of which is June 8 th to Oxford, a do-asyou-please
day, for £15 per person. We leave Hedingham at 8.0 am and Oxford
at 3.30 pm. There is much to entice the visitor in this university city with its
collection of world famous buildings, attractive historic streets, covered market
and the usual high street shops.
The second coach trip is a new format for us and takes us first to the Bure Valley
Railway in Aylsham, where a 2-course roast lunch will be booked for us. This is
followed by a trip on the historic railway to Wroxham where we will be
transferred by our coach to a waiting boat for a 1.5 to 2 hour cruise on the
Broads. We will then have approximately an hour in Wroxham before departing
for home at 5.0 pm. The inclusive cost of the day is £38.50 (for everything!).
We leave Hedingham at 8.30 am on the 16 th September..
To enquire or book for either or both trips contact Ann on 01787
469719 or Hilda on 01787 460876. Both trips are open to everyone, so
get booking!! Please contact Ann as above for any group enquiries.
Molly’s Wood
It is now March and perhaps I should be describing the antics of the March
Hare and the joys of the beginning of Spring but no I am going to write about
some community ideas in Molly’s Wood and the Long-tailed Tit. Why the Longtailed
Tit?, because it is one of our favourite resident birds, mine anyway,
which are nesting in the black thorn hedge of Molly’s Wood and have a
community life style. These delightful little birds live in community groups and
build nests of unbelievably complexity. These nests are made mostly of
feathers and moss and are held together with spider’s webs which give them
the ability to expand as the little chicks grow. How their little brains can devise
such a complex structure is a mystery waiting to be solved. Both the male and
female participate in building their nest and very often other members of the
group, usually related, who are not breeding will help to build a neighbours
nest and feed the young. Because of the small size of these birds they need a
lot of protection from the cold nights during the breeding season: the unique
structure of the nests provide that protection. If you have ever slept in a
feather bed you will know what I mean!
We are anxious to seek more community involvement in Molly’s Wood during
the coming year and welcome any additional suggestions. The young children
from Lyons Hall Primary school have had a great time on their Muddy Monday
visits under the guidance of Carolyn White this month and have had to
experience a mixture of weather conditions which is good character building!.
Mark Barnes from the Majendie Steeple Explorer Scout Unit has offered to give
us a hand with some essential work and Juliet Stevenson from Wash farm is
planning to complete some of her Duke Edinburgh Award activities in Molly's
Wood.
Petanque
Sible Hedingham Parish Council is set to fill in its petanque pitch unless local
residents start using it.
The dedicated area for the traditional French sport was established at the village
Recreation Ground more than five years ago with boules available from the Parish
Council. However, it is seldom used – apart from by dogs and cats who see it as a
giant litter tray!
As a result, the Parish Council is set to fill in the pit and turf over the area – unless
local residents show that there is a need for it.
“We are having to clean the course regularly and recently discussed coming up with
some sort of cover to protect the surface. But if nobody is interested in playing
petanque, then there is not much point,” said parish council chairman Ron
Volkwyn.
“Dog fouling is a growing problem on the Recreation Ground anyway and we urge
owners to be more responsible and show more pride in their village. It’s difficult
enough to keep the grassed areas clean as it is but when the animals use the pit it
adds a whole new dimension as it needs to be raked over continually to keep the
space operational.
“Maybe people are unaware that it is available or that it even exists but, unless it
starts getting used for its original intended purpose, then it will have to go. It really
is a case of use it or lose it.”
Any groups or individuals interested should contact the Parish Council offices on
01787 462568 or email clerk@siblehedinghampc.org.uk
Last year Castle Hedingham Parish Council Magna Carta committee
celebrated the 800 th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta 1215-2016,
by organising a series of events. Robert de Vere (3 rd Earl of Oxford) was one
of the 25 barons who forced King John to seal the Charter. The events
included:-

A Heritage Way-marked Walk to Clare, linking the Magna Carta villages of
Castle Hedingham and Clare.

An exhibition in St. Nicholas Church, which also included an embroidered
panel dedicated to Robert de Vere and 2 pennants –one about the legacy
of the Magna Carta and one showing items from the de Vere family. This
exhibition was shown at the Castle in August and went to the Braintree
District Museum in September till February 2016. It will next be on show
at the Saffron Walden Museum in July this year till January 2017.

A concert at St Nicholas Church by Riotous Assembly with songs and music
they had composed telling the story of the Magna Carta. A CD of this
was produced and is still available.

A picnic at the Castle to which all residents in the Hedinghams were invited
which included a pageant by some of the pupils of de Vere Primary
School.(1400 attended)

A very detailed painting was commissioned which portrays how the Castle
and surrounding area may have looked in 1215.

And finally, an information board about the Magna Carta and Castle
Hedingham which was designed in collaboration with pupils
from the Graphic Design Dept. at Hedingham School. It has now
been installed on Forge Green.
These events were made possible by the many hours of help by
volunteers and generous funding by The Heritage Lottery Fund and
the Magna Carta 800 Barons.
