Ponderings
Are you a bit bored by the news lately? Politicians tax returns, Panamaniannian
tax havens, and lots of news about Europe. Should we be in? Out? Or should
we just shake it all about?
On a more serious note, I do hope you are taking a keen interest in the
discussions on Europe and giving it some thought. My prayer is that, as a
nation, we can balance what is good and fair for ourselves and our families
with what it good and fair for those less fortunate than ourselves. I hope we
can balance the decisions we make now with the potential future we will be
making for ourselves and our children. In church, we will be prayerfully
considering what we think Jesus might be saying about our decisions and
choices as we seek to bring in His kingdom in these villages.
One person who has learned to take a long perspective is our Queen. As she
approaches her 90 th birthday there will me plenty of opportunities to celebrateebra
with her. She is now the longest reigning monarch in British History (64 years)
and has advised 12 Prime Ministers. Look inside the magazine for the
upcoming events.
The Queen has often mentioned her faith in Jesus Christ in her Christmas
broadcasts. She acknowledges that she has derived great strength from her
faith during some difficult times. Living as she does under public scrutiny the
challenges within her family have made the news on many occasions. Howev-
er, this is what she said on her Christmas broadcast in 2014.
“For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate
today, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life. A role model of recon-
ciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance e and
healing. Christ’s example has taught me to seek respect and value all people
of whatever faith and none. “
If you are in need of inspiration and an anchor in your life then perhaps you
could find the same comfort and support as the Queen. This is one thing that
royalty and commoners can share; the King of Kings, the Prince of Peace,
Jesus Christ, loves us all.
Love, peace and joy to you all.
Celebrating National Mills’ Weekend
National Mills’ Weekend is the annual festival of England’s milling
heritage and provides you with a fantastic opportunity to visit mills
around the country, many of which are not usually open to the public.
The Friends of Alderford Mill will be marking this event which takes
place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May. The Mill will be open on
both days from 1:00pm to 5:00pm and a local amateur radio group will
be with us. They will be in radio contact with radio groups in other
mills around the country to celebrate National Mills’ Weekend. Not
only will you be able to explore the Mill this weekend and learn about
this important part of our heritage, but you will be able to find out
about amateur radio from members of the group at the same time.
As usual, refreshments will be available at the Mill and free car parking
will be available nearby. Admission is free, but you may wish to
make a donation towards the upkeep and maintenance of the Mill.
Hedingham, which are led by
Father Brian McGilloway, the Roman
Catholic Priest based at Halstead.
for their services.
Looking forward to June, the Mill will be open again to visitors on
Sunday 12 June from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
We were very pleased with the response to our first opening of the
year in April. We had well over 100 visitors during the afternoon with
not only people from the Hedingham area, but also from as far afield
as Derbyshire and Kent. Many made comments about the how interesting
the Mill is and how it shows off the technology of medieval
milling very well.
We are sure that you will find the Mill equally fascinating and we look
forward to your visit.
The first weekend of March is now traditionally the London Live Monopoly Run , an
event organised by a scouting district south of London and now in its 19th year . We had
three teams taking part and set off bright and early from behind the Coop in Swan
n
Street bright and early on Saturday 5th March in a minibus and car. Arriving at Island
Gardens on the Isle of Dogs we took the DLR and Jubilee Line to Waterloo where the
information regarding the day was received , last minute plans made and at 9.30 am
everyone set off .Our teams were initially going in different directions , one team headed
to the London Clink , another went to Mayfair while the third went to Euston , thereafter
making their way around London and the “virtual “ monopoly board . Meeting them
back at Greenwich they seemed to have all had a good time , final positions were not
high but its the participation that counts and the enjoyment !! We had a bingo night a
few weeks ago , although often thought to be an older persons game when chocolate as
prizes is on offer then the “eyes down “ becomes more interesting . !! Looking forward
now to better weather and longer evenings, hikes , camps etc . April is going to be busy
with Legoland and D of E hikes and then planning for the Essex Jamboree .
We meet at Wooding Lodge , Castle Hedingham 7.30pm 9.30 pm everyy
Wednesday during a school term .
Filling Station
Hi everyone as the weather has been mild I expect you have been very busy in your
gardens it is lovely to see everything coming into bloom .
We all enjoyed our talk this month given by Ken Crowther of the B.B.C. such a
fantastic speaker explaining how he choose to become an apprentice gardener
working and training in a lot of London parks etc he also described some of the
characters he has met during his career.Crowther Landscapes were established in
1966,he eventually found his way into radio presenting which of course he still
does today and he now has an online gardening station called World Radio
Gardening which I am sure some of you will enjoy.
Our monthly meetings have now finished until September but in the meantime we
are holding a Plant Sale on May 28th 10.00a.m.to 12.00p.m.with refreshments
speakers we have. You will also have a chance for a cuppa, a piece of cake and a
chat, sounds good to me.
Yeldham & District Cancer Support Group
.
It’s our 1 st Birthday this month! The group was set up to provide a meeting place for
people currently receiving treatment for cancer or post-treatment, no matter how long ago,
and for their carers. Those attending come from towns and villages in the North-East Essex
and Sudbury areas. If you feel a bit isolated post-diagnosis, it can help a lot to talk with
people in similar circumstances.
We meet on the third Thursday of each month at 10.30 in the Reading Room, Great
Yeldham, where we have refreshments and friendly chat, the occasional speaker and focus
on a particular subject. The topic for April was the Tracks of our Years, a musical session.
We welcome anyone who has a skill they can share with us, perhaps in singing, making
something, healthy eating, exercise or relaxation. And if you have any free time on your
hands, once a month or just occasionally, we also need people to help with the essential
refreshments and getting the room ready!
Next meeting: Thursday 19 th May.
Healthy is Dull and Boring?
So many of us make grand statements at the start of a year,
month, week that we are going to eat this, not eat that,
move more, try something different. Then 2 days, 2 weeks,
2 months into the new routine old habits creep back in, the
excuses return and we unfortunately give up.
For many there is also still a perception that a
Hello everyone hope you have all been enjoying the lovely weather we have had this
past week mind you as I am writing this it is pouring with rain ,still at least it seems
like winter has finished.
I am pleased to say that our Nostalgic Supper Evening was a great success, the food
course our members who provided the food and wonderful raffle prizes, well done
everyone.
Ann Gill who organises our outings has been busy making final arrangements for a
We were very fortunate that Miranda Pender very kindly stepped in at the last
moment, owing to the original speaker being unwell, and gave us a very entertaining
evening on March 18th. Miranda is a singer/songwriter who has had a change of
career in the last few years, to pursue her love of music. Her presentation included
amusing stories and backgrounds to her songs, which she accompanied herself on a
guitar.
On April 15 th members enjoyed the annual meal at the Moot House – delicious food
and good company – a great evening.
On May 13 th we welcome Brian Carline whose talk is entitled ‘Tripe and Trotters’.
This includes tales of a post-war northern childhood, which I think will include more
than a touch of humour. Brian was a school teacher for 35 years, has tried his hand as
a comedian, and in retirement has published several books. He is also a keen
gardener, specialising in fuchsia and pelargonium. I’m very much looking forward to
Brian’s talk. All meetings take place at the Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham, starting
at 7.45pm.
It’s ‘all go’ on the tea and cakes front (nothing unusual there, then!!). On Saturday
May 28 th , we are joining forces with the Garden Club and providing tea/coffee and
cakes between 10.0 and 12.0 to supplement their Plant Sale.
On May 31 st we are booked into the Tiptree Jam Tearoom, now at Cressing Barns,
due to arrive at 2.0 pm, leaving the Hedinghams at 1.30 pm. After the refreshments,
we are free to explore the barns and gardens. If you would like to go and need a lift,
or can offer a lift, please let Ann know on 01787 469719.
The next coach trip is June 8 th to Oxford, a do-as-you-please day, for £15 per person.
We leave Memories, Castle Hedingham at 7.45 am, The Bell at 7.50 and Coop, Sible
Hedingham at 8.0 am. In order to give everyone a full day, we leave Oxford at 4.0
pm.
Then on September 16 th we are going first to the Bure Valley Railway in Aylsham,
where a 2-course roast lunch is booked for us. This is followed by a ride on the
historic railway to Wroxham where we will be transferred by our coach to a waiting
boat for a 1.5 to 2 hour cruise on the Broads. We will then have approximately an
hour in Wroxham before departing for home at 5.0 pm. The inclusive cost of the day
is £38.50. We leave the Hedinghams at 8.30 am.
To book for coach trips contact Ann on 01787 469719 or Hilda on
01787 460876. Both trips are open to everyone, so we look forward to
see you there. Please contact Ann as above for any group queries.
Molly’s Wood
Molly’s Wood & Nature Notes
In our last contribution tion to the Parish Magazine we made a special reference to
the community involvement in our Molly’s Wood project. This month we
would like to stress the part we can play in the innate desire for knowledge and
learning in young children. “Curiosity”. Speak to any child psychologist and
he will tell you that the developing brain in children is at its highest activity
during the years of 3 – 7 and that encouraging the child’s curiosity is the
greatest stimulus to that development. To quote Ray Mears “knowledge weighs
nothing and costs even less”.
April is a month of awakening with very special changes in the countryside
which the very young can have, perhaps for the first time, in Molly’s Wood.
We cannot guarantee to show a chick hatching from an egg or a butterfly
emerging from its pupa, in real life, but we can show children how to make
bows and arrows from local wood, demonstrate where butterflies go in winter
time and how to find lots of insect wild life under cover.
During one of the visits from the Lions Hall Primary School the children had
the excitement of finding the bones of a dead hare which had been picked clean
in the meadow. I quote the observations from their teacher Carolyn White,
“The children spotted the skeleton themselves and immediately started
wondering what had killed it and what it had been. They looked for clues in the
bits of fur they could see and guesses ranged from dog,” because it's the same
colour as my grandad's dog” to rabbit “because we always see rabbit poo here”
which I think demonstrates the importance of regular outside activity time. The
children's most prized find was a leg and foot attached and still working joint.
They asked questions about how it worked, what part was it on themselves, and
they tried to make similar movements. We spent over 20 minutes looking at
different parts, inspecting fur and wondering what it was and what killed it. It
wasn't at all macabre, just a unique, thought provoking learning opportunity”.
(Unquote). Similar hands-on experiences should be supported as they cannot be
found in books or on television.
Curiosity should be encouraged
Petanque
Sible Hedingham Parish Council is set to fill in its petanque pitch unless local
residents start using it.
The dedicated area for the traditional French sport was established at the village
Recreation Ground more than five years ago with boules available from the Parish
Council. However, it is seldom used – apart from by dogs and cats who see it as a
giant litter tray!
As a result, the Parish Council is set to fill in the pit and turf over the area – unless
local residents show that there is a need for it.
“We are having to clean the course regularly and recently discussed coming up with
some sort of cover to protect the surface. But if nobody is interested in playing
petanque, then there is not much point,” said parish council chairman Ron
Volkwyn.
“Dog fouling is a growing problem on the Recreation Ground anyway and we urge
owners to be more responsible and show more pride in their village. It’s difficult
enough to keep the grassed areas clean as it is but when the animals use the pit it
adds a whole new dimension as it needs to be raked over continually to keep the
space operational.
“Maybe people are unaware that it is available or that it even exists but, unless it
starts getting used for its original intended purpose, then it will have to go. It really
is a case of use it or lose it.”
Any groups or individuals interested should contact the Parish Council offices on
01787 462568 or email clerk@siblehedinghampc.org.uk
Last year Castle Hedingham Parish Council Magna Carta committee
celebrated the 800 th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta 12152016, ,
by organising a series of events. Robert de Vere (3 rd Earl of Oxford) was one
of the 25 barons who forced King John to seal the Charter. The events
included:

A Heritagg the Magna Carta villages of
Castle Hedingham and Clare.

An exhibition in St. Nicholas Church, which also included an embroidered
panel dedicated to Robert de Vere and 2 pennants –one about the legacy
of the Magna Carta and one showing items from the de Vere family. This
exhibition ition was shown at the Castle in August ust and went to the Braintreee
District Museum in September till February 2016. It will next be on show
at the Saffron Walden Museum in July this year till January 2017.

A concert at St Nicholas Church by Riotous Assembly with song
sic they had composed telling the story of the Magna Carta. A CD of this
was produced and is still available.

A picnic at the Castle to which all residents in the Hedingh
ed which included a pageant by some of the pupils of de Vere Primary
School.(1400 attended)

A very detailed painting was commissioned which portrays how the Castle
and surrounding area may have looked in 1215.

And finally, an information board about the Mag
tle Hedingham which h was designed in collaboration oration with pupils
l
from the Graphic Design Dept. at Hedingham School. It has now
been installed on Forge Green.
These events were made possible by the many hours of help by
volunteers and generous funding by The Heritage Lottery Fund and
the Magna Carta 800Barons.
