PRIESTLY PONDERINGS
As we remember in our services this month the 100th anniversary of the
Battle of the Somme you may be tempted to think not much progress has
been made in the last 100 years towards peace on earth. In this country we
may have had no threat of war to our civilians, although we have seen acts
of terror. Our armed forces still continue the battle for democracy and
against oppression in various parts of the world. Take a global outlook,
however and you will see war and oppression in many parts of the world,
not just the places that are hitting the headlines at this present time. It is as
well that we remember this, even as we focus our remembrance services
on those who have served this country with honour at times of war.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called Children
of God.” All Christians are called to be peacemakers and as we move from
remembrance to our time of Advent, which begins this month, we enter the
period in the church year when we think of the coming of the Prince of
Peace and our celebration of the nativity. It's a stark contrast to think about
that special baby being born to a seemingly very ordinary family – the
traditional nativity set against the wars and politics that run this world.
Contrast the “silent night, holy night” with the chaos and noise of Christmas
shopping. Compare the simple setting of the stable with the ostentatious
consumption that goes on at this time.
I'm not saying don't have a good time, and do by all means celebrate the
season – but don't rush into it without the quietness and thoughtfulness of
an advent preparation.
Our carol services begin in early December this year with the British Legion
carol service starting us off at 3pm on the 4th December. There are many to
choose from whether you have small children (try the Nativity at St Nicholas
at 5pm Christmas Eve or 4pm at St Peters) or prefer a more traditional
service in which case go to the service of 9 lessons and carols at either
church. (Sat Dec 17th at St Nicholas or Sunday 18th at St Peter's – both at
6pm). Look out in next month's magazine for all the times.
I do hope you get some time in November to take a pause before the
Christmas season begins and really consider what it's all about – the
coming of the Prince of Peace – and for His followers to become Children of
God.
With every Blessing
Rev Liz Paxton
But
We cannot do it without YOU!
The Friends of the Church of St Nicholas is a voluntary group looking for
new committee members. It is great fun arranging village events - but we
picnics, street parties, concerts, fetes etc
Are you a community minded person that likes fundraising and organising events?
Please ring Demetra on 01787 460435 MANY THANKS!
The Friends of the Church of St Nicholas is the only fundraising group that helps
to pay for repairs our church urgently needs. this remarkable and historic building
is the centre of our village and we need to look after it.
ST PETER’S CHURCH
Tim Mardon is fundraising for St Peter's Church
You may remember the story last year of the shooting in The Old Vicarage
in Sible Hedingham during a burglary. I am happy to say that Tim is making
a good recovery, although he is still suffering from the result of the shotgun
wound in his leg. Tim has been personally most generous to our church
fundraising efforts to give us some improvement in the church facilities. We
hope to create a better kitchen space and have plans to run youth activities
in the church for the local youth once these are complete. We are still about
20% short of our target and would appreciate further local community
support. If you would like to contribute to our target please click the link
below. Alternatively if you can't contribute financially but would like to help
create a programme to support the youth of this area please contact Rev
Liz Paxton on liz@paxtonconsulting.co.uk. To Donate please enter this link
SCOUTS
Majendie Explorer Scout Unit
The girls team representing the Unit at this year's Jailbreak were Lily,
Natasha, Kirsty and Victoria and they all did the name of Majendie proud.
The event this year was over the weekend of September 24th - 25th,
starting at Caldecote, to the west of Cambridge and finishing at Clavering
(not far from Jamie Oliver's house - but no big breakfast was forthcoming).
The teams start out at 12.00noon and have three hours before the chasers
commence their pursuit, taking lives from the teams until the finish 24 hours
later.
Our team of girls navigated well and bedded down in a dry ditch only 5km
away from the finish on late Saturday evening, fortunately it was dry and
warm but they were well equipped with bright orange survival bags - not the
kind of colour ideal for camouflage.
Their position was second, having been only caught twice in the 24 hours
and arrived at the finish happy and smiling. Thank you to the parents who
transported the team to and from the event.
We have had several evenings of scouting skills this half term, splitting the
unit into random groups, as this works better than one big group - can you
imagine dealing with 30 14-18 year old teenagers every week!! We have
had instruction in first response, cooking over a gas and trangia stove, map
work, fire-lighting and blindfold tent pitching. Thank you to Ed, Jess, Adam,
Helen, Katie and Will for all your help – it's good to have you in the team.
We also spent an evening at the Golf Driving Range in Sudbury when we
were joined by Network members (and several parents). This is always a
good evening and we thank the staff for their help that evening.
We are off to North Wales, Yr Hafod Bunkhouse near Capel Curig, over half
term. We are hill walking, watching the British Surfing Championships,
doing a 'total wipe-out course', trampolining underground and white water
rafting, look out for the report in the next magazine.
Garage sale trail - just to confirm that this will be on Saturday 6th May and
will involve both Sible and Castle Hedingham. We will have large signs on
roads leading into the villages and will publicise over social media and the
local press.
WOMEN’S GROUP
Castle Hedingham Women's Group
The next meeting is on Friday November 18th at the Memorial Hall, Castle
Hedingham and starts at 7.45 pm. This promises to be a fun, varied and
entertaining evening with Alan Haines' talk 'A Kick up the Sixties'. Alan
takes a look back at the 1960s but with a mix of comedy, magic and filmclips
all thrown in. I am sure that we will all be able to identify with some of
the memories!
The Christmas Plate Supper, 'Open Entertainment', is on Friday 16th
December and this year will take a different form for us. We are looking for
volunteers to read a festive poem or short, amusing excerpt from a
Christmas story, or one of your own happy or exciting experiences
associated with this season. Anything Christmassy and only a few minutes
each, so please do join in. Could you please let me know if you are able to
take part, just so that we have some idea of timing etc (always a lot to fit in
on this evening!!) The evening starts at the earlier time of 7.00pm for
7.30pm and each member brings a
plate of something to eat and share
with everyone. We usually end up
with a veritable feast!
The last coach trip for this year is on
1 December and is fully booked, but
watch this space as Hilda and I are
working on some interesting ideas
for next year, probably starting in
March. More news and dates for
details.
spent time living and working in Australia he gained a
PGCE in History from York University in 2000. He has
worked in independent education for the last 16 years
and has taught in a variety of schools in the East and
South East of England. He was most recently Deputy
Head at Duncombe School in Hertford where he had
been for the past 5 years.
He is a keen sportsman and has coached a variety of sports throughout his
career, leading hockey and rugby teams to success in national competitions.
He is also an enthusiastic musician and sings in a local choir.
Mr Douglas has three young children, Rupert, Monty and Hamish, who range
in age from Nursery to Year 3.
We asked Mr Douglas…
If you hadn't become a teacher, what career would you have chosen
instead?
I had planned to be a policeman. Thankfully a sporting injury put paid to that
as I would have been dreadful at it. When I was much younger I wanted to be
a milkman but that was mostly because I figured your day was finished by
lunchtime!
What is special about St. Margaret's Prep School?
This is the most dedicated staff I have ever worked with and it is a pleasure to
lead them. As you would expect, the academic results are outstanding, as is
the pastoral care. However, the most impressive thing I've seen since
arriving at the school was a 45 piece orchestra playing a piece, written by the
pupils, at last year's speech day, which was followed by a stunning whole
school production of Alice in Wonderland. I've seen a lot of school concerts
over the past 16 years in independent schools, but it was something of a
novelty to find myself saying to parents how amazing this was and how
impressive the performances were, and actually mean every word!
th
by vandalism. The Remembrance Service will be on 13 November, the Parish Council
to personal issues Cllr P Sarel could no longer represent the Parish Council at the Youth
supported. With regard to the community funding he had been approached for new ropes
for the bells at St Peter's and would welcome other ideas. Cllr R Volkwyn said that if the
extra CCTV camera's was proposed and accepted that would be an idea for funding.
possibly for next year as it was too late to arrange for this year.
had written to Highways thanking them. He also thanked Stuart Bingham for promptly
Hello everyone here we are again another month
has flown by before we know it, Christmas will be
here.
In September we had a very enjoyable talk
illustrated with slides and a demonstration given by
Deb Hart entitled “Willow In The Landscape” - it was
so interesting seeing her work with the willow she makes it look so easy,
some of us are hoping we will be able to have a workshop with her; I will
keep you informed of any developments.
Once again I am having to write this report before our October meeting, we
are looking forward to hearing Judy Anderson give a talk entitled 'The Story
Of Great Ormond Street Hospital'.
Ann Gill, our outings member, is still sorting out future trips for next year
including of course the Mercury Theatre in January to see Jekyll and Hyde
by the Colchester Amateur Dramatic Society and an evening trip to Bury St.
Edmunds with a Blue Badge Guide, the date of this is still to be arranged.
We always have a great time on these outings and always include friends
and family.
Our meeting on Monday 21st is “Paper Craft” given by LisaAndress.
The competition will be “MakeAPaper Doyley”
Once again if you would like to come along to any of our meetings you will
be so welcome it is a great way to make new friends, enjoy a cup of tea or
coffee with the lovely cakes etc. our members provide, as I always say food
comes into it somewhere Ha!
We meet every third Monday 7.30pm at Sible Hedingham Baptist Church.
GARDENING CLUB
Castle Hedingham Gardening Club
Hi everyone, I expect like myself you are busy getting your gardens ready
for the winter months and planning new things for next year, still at least we
will have a break from the mowing and watering - ha.
Our meeting in October was a talk given by Dudley Chignall on the Four
Seasons in Essex and Suffolk Towns and Villages, as always this was
illustrated with some wonderful slides - he really is a superb photographer
and an amusing speaker.
This month we are looking forward to seeing Maureen Bantock
demonstrate a Christmas Flower Arrangement and telling us about her
earlier life making Royal Wedding Bouquets, please feel free to come along
and join us - visitors are always welcome and I am sure you will have a
really enjoyable afternoon as Maureen is a very entertaining lady with a
great sense of humour.
In December instead of a meeting we
are having a Christmas Afternoon
Tea at the Poplar Nurseries Marks
Tey, we will also have time to enjoy
their lovely Christmas displays and
perhaps buy a thing or two!
Bye for now hope you will decide to
join us for both or either of these two
events we are a really friendly group
and there is always time at our
meetings for a cuppa,biscuit and a
chat.
