The Mahdi, Mohammed Ahmed, in 1880 conquered Kordofan, in 1883 vanquished the Egyptian<br />

army, and on 26 January, 1885, destroyed Khartoum. A number of Christian priests and sisters<br />

were held for years in captivity; the name of Christian seemed obliterated.<br />

Muhammad ibn Abdalla, the Mahdi (Guided One) and his Red Flag<br />

Muhammad Ahmad ibn 'Abd Allah was the son of a Dunqulahwi boat builder who claimed<br />

descent from the Prophet Muhammad. He was the disciple of the Sufi master Sammaniyah. He<br />

later retired in Aba Island on the White Nile as an ascetic. In his tours he had occasion to visit<br />

many of the <strong>Sudan</strong>ese areas and were deeply touched by the corruption of the government<br />

officials and the apathy the clergy. Being of descend from Prophet Mohamed himself, he took it<br />

upon himself for the reformation and declared himself a the Mahdi the called one. The Ansars<br />

under the leadership of 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad, the caliph (Khalifah; "deputy"), and all the<br />

Baqqarah Arabs of Kordofan and Darfur who were cattle breeders supported him.<br />

This fabulous jug, memorializing the "Hero of Heroes," was struck to celebrate the effort of the<br />

British army to rescue Gordon which arrived just two days too late to save Gordon.<br />

MajorGeneral Charles George Gordon, CB, also known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha,<br />

and Gordon of Khartoum, was a British army officer and administrator. He saw action in the<br />

Crimean War as an officer in the British Army.
