The outer law of rules pertaining to worship, transactions, marriage, judicial rulings, and criminal<br />

law—what is often referred to, broadly, as qanun.<br />

qualities and evil traits of character, and adornment with virtues and good character.<br />

The typical early Sufi Teacher lived in a cell of a mosque and taught a small band of disciples & a<br />

tradition which can be traced to Hebrew Rabbinical Schools and certainly to the monastic orders. A<br />

Sufi student enters the faith by seeking a teacher. Sufism emphasises a strong relationship between<br />

the seeker and the teacher. The Sufi community grows around a teacher.<br />

were forced to join Islam as a compromise and tolerance. According to Marshall Hodgson, the Muslim<br />

conquests had brought large numbers of Christian monks and hermits, especially in Syria and Egypt,<br />

under the rule of Muslims. When Nubia was ran over by the Muslim invaders, they retained their<br />

spiritual life after the conquests, and this eventually led to the founding of Sufism. It is more like the<br />

Christian Pentecostal Movement which insists on going beyond external and legalistic forms to<br />

seek a personal experience of God through forms of meditation and spiritual growth. A number of Sufi<br />

orders, comparable to Christian monastic orders, exist.<br />

Eminent Sufis such as Ali Hujwiri claim that the tradition first began with Ali ibn Abi Talib. the cousin<br />

and son&in&law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, ruling over the Islamic Caliphate from 656 to 661.<br />

Junayd of Baghdad regarded Ali as the Sheikh of the principles and practices of Sufism.<br />
