This word occurs only once in the Bible where it is promised to Solomon in 1 Ki. 10:23 * Hone means: enough riches, substance, wealth 3. DANGERS OF PROSPERITY I have pointed out earlier that prosperity in the Bible is a multidimensional prosperity - well being and development of the total man. An unbalanced development always destroys the person. This is not considered as prosperity in the Bible. It is determined essentially by the needs of the total person. Bible is not teaching this one sided human urge for wealth and power and ‘prosperity’ Jer. 22:21 I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, "I will not listen". Prosperity blinds people , "by being weary of well being". It is because people lack the realization that "it is the Lord, who gives you power to get wealth." So, Deu 8:17 -18 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today. Another pitfall is that continuous prosperity leads to a trust in the riches. Prov 11:28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. Job remonstrates: Job 31:24-28 "If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, 'You are my security,' if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained, if I have regarded the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor, so that my heart was secretly enticed and 31
