Hong Kong vs. America

How does your family celebrate Chinese New Year? Depending
on where you live, there are differences and similarities
in how you celebrate Chinese New Year. It is different, but similar
as well. Here are some differences:
In Hong Kong, adults give Red Envelopes to almost everyone!
In Hong Kong, if you did not give out Red Envelopes, it
would be considered to be bad, or disrespectful.
In Hong Kong, kids have a least 1 week of vacation, or maybe
even 2! It is mostly time to travel, or maybe stay in Hong Kong to
play with friends and family.
In Hong Kong, schools usually make a big deal out of Chinese
New Year. They may organize a school fair or a huge school assembly.
It sort of shows the culture of Hong Kong or the Chinese
Culture.
In Hong Kong, malls usually have lion and/or dragon dances.
Though lion dances are more common. In typical lion dances,
stores would hang vegetables on the front door. The lion would
then hop up and throw the veggies to the shopkeepers. It also includes
music. The lion dance is really cool and if you are in Hong
Kong during Chinese New Year, you don’t want to miss it!
In Hong Kong, restaurants almost always go on break or put
up decorations. It is hard to find any restaurant that doesn’t have
decorations! The decorations are usually red or have gold on
them. Yuan Bao are common decorations too. They are sort of
like gold coins, but a different shape. They have high value, like
gold coins in America.

In America, it’s a little different. Instead of giving out a lot of redenvelopes,
you may just give it to friend’s kids, or maybe don’t
give any at all!
In America, you may not have any vacation for Chinese New
Year. Maybe just a long weekend after the Week of Chinese
New Year for President’s day.
In America, schools literally do almost nothing for Chinese
New Year at all! (Some schools do do something.) It’s up to the
teacher to decide what to do.
Like my teacher just showed us some videos. But I know another
teacher actually let the class make crafts and listen to traditional
Chinese New Year Stories for Chinese New Year.
In America, malls don’t really do anything for Chinese New
Year. They sometimes just hang up a few decorations, or do
nothing at all. I think that’s because there are just less Chinese
people around, so they won’t. Some restaurants run by Chinese
do put up decorations.
In America, restaurants don’t really do anything unless it’s
a Chinese Restaurants, though sometimes restaurants put up
small decorations, though they don’t really do much.
In conclusion, both places have different ways of celebrating
Chinese New Year. But both still celebrate alike too. They
are different and same, but both celebrate uniquely and surely.

Chinese New Years

Chinese new years is a day when chinese religions celebrate
the New Year. Chinese New Year is February 8. Most of
the time family members and good friends give each other red
envelopes. Red envelopes is a symbol of good luck. This year
2016 is the year of the monkeys because many chinese religions
still believe in astrology. In china they say Happy New
Year as “Xinnian ”. The date for Chinese New Year changes
each year. “It always falls between January 21 and February
20, determined by the Chinese lunar calendar.” “2016 is a year
of the Monkey according to the Chinese 12-year animal zodiac
cycle. Other Monkey years include: …1944, 1956, 1968, 1980,
1992, 2004… If you were born then you’re a Monkey. Each Chinese
zodiac year begins on Chinese New Year’s Day.”

Why is Chinese New Year is a holiday

Chinese New Year is the most important holiday for the Chinese
because it was the first day of the month in the traditional
calendar. The calendar is based on a solar calendar. The holiday
is celebrated from New Year’s Eve and will last around 15
years. We give out money in red envelopes. People will reunite
with their family and might even go to tourist destinations. People
also get gifts from family relatives and pray to their ancestors
who made the holiday.

My Childhood

At the age of twelve, I have already experienced so much,
whether it be emotions or activities or the embarrassment of playing
an extra note during a rest in a piece of music when it is completely
silent. No matter what it is, it has contributed to who I am
today.
Yes, I am a weird, and goofy person but that’s just who I
am, a definition of my personality. What made me this way, you
may ask. Of course, it’s all the events in the course of my life that
have led up to this. For example, there was a time when I fell and
scraped my knee badly, twice in one day. Maybe it’s another time
when I played Dare or Dare with my friends and ended up doing
many unbelievably crazy things. Experiences like these have
brought me through my twelve years of life so far. They are the
reason I am the person that I am today.
My parents contribute a lot to my life, too. At home I do all kinds
of things to earn myself the pleasure of jokingly being called a
dog, cat, pig, and many more animals. For example, my room
is very messy, yet it gives off more of a cozy feeling. This earned
me the name of dog because my mom thinks that my room is
like a dog house. Most of the animals that my mom calls me are
earned mostly by me doing something very peculiar. My dad goofs
around a lot with me too. Jokes ae passed around while laughing
a little too hard. The comfort at home has also added to the me of
today.

When I was in fifth grade, I was still a shy little girl who
didn’t talk to a lot of people. This all changed when I got into
middle school and started to talk a lot more, I even began to
socialize a bit. Even now, I wonder how I became so much more
confident. Was it possible that I was actually shy enough to not
talk to anyone at all? When I look back at myself now, I can’t remember
how I used to feel when I was so quiet and lonely.
Sometimes I feel very accomplished in life, but other times
I’m just not satisfied with myself. My family and I have high
standards. For example, my Dad gives me two choices for future
universities: Stanford and Harvard. I know that he is just joking
about this, but I sometimes take it to heart. I secretly want to go
to Stanford (although now it’s not a secret). Sometimes when
I want to be like a certain person that I look up to, I feel that
I need to do something more with my life than just make my
dreams come true.

In ten years, I’ll be 22 years old. At that point in life I’ll pursue
my dreams to go to Stanford University. At that time, I will
probably know what major I’ll want to do and I’ll have a future
job in mind. My main focus would probably be to just finish my
education, get a good job, and start a new chapter of life. Sometimes,
it’s hard for me to think about the future, but I eager to find
out how i will be like and what kind of person will I be.
In twenty years, I will be 32 years old. Therefore, I might already
have a family and be happy with a job. Hopefully, my life
will be a pleasant one. Also, I want to have graduated with some
kind of degree so that I can be well educated. Most of all, I want
to have changed some of the bad habits that I have, so that I can
become a better person.
For example, I think that I need to become more responsible
and be faster at my work. These qualities are not good to me and
work, but if I change then I can be a great person.
Being a good person, that’s a very important value to me. I
am a person that values kindness, and perseverance. These qualities
are important to me because a kind person will help me out
or another person. Also, kindness just is a very important thing
that will help gain other kind friends. Perseverance is very important
to me because that means that a person just keep on trying
until they succeed. That’s a very important value because then
a person would never give up and that’s a good thing unless it’s for
a bad cause. I try to have both of these qualities to become a better
person to others.

My friends are very important to me. They help me
get through the worst of times and make me feel better. Friend
are always there for each other no matter what. We will always
support each other. One of my biggest wishes is that my closest
friends will always stay in contact with me, so we can always be
friends. For better or for worse, my friends and I stick together.
There are many psychological questions that I have been
asked before. There was one where I had to pretend to be a train
driver. There was a split in the track off to two sides. On one
track there was a whole car of family members. On the other
track, there was a whole bus full of children that you didn’t
know. I had to choose which track to take. I chose to go on the
track with the car full of family members, only because the children
had not had a chance to live a life yet. Also, their parents
would be devastated. I still love my family members, but I would
rather spare the lives of several children.
In conclusion, I am a unique person. Nobody can stop me
from believing in my values. Parents, friends, or family, they are
all important to me. This is all the knowledge that I have at the
age of twelve.

Young Cookery
Berry Pancakes

Ingredients:
1cup of flour
2 tablespoons of sugar
2 teaspoons of baking powder
½ teaspoons of salt
1 cup of milk
2 Berry Pancakes of melted unsalted butter/vegetable oil
1 egg
Blueberries (however many you want)
Strawberries (however many you want)
Bananas (1 or 2)
Maple syrup (add as much as you like)

Directions:
1. Mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
2. In a separate bowl mix together the milk, butter/oil, and egg.
Then add the dry mixture to it.
Do not overmix. Small lumps in the mixture is fine.
3. Heat a skillet, then pour some vegetable oil so that the batter does
not stick.
4. After, pour in 2 to 3 tablespoons of batter
use the back of a spoon to spread it into a round shape.
5. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes until you see bubbles form and a few of
them have popped.
Flip with a thin spatula.
6.Cook until the underside has turned brown.
7.Assort the berries on top of the pancake in any order that you desire.
8. ENJOY YOUR DELICOUS PANCAKES!!!

切 勿 錯 過 孩 子 學 習 的 關 鍵 時 刻 !!
子 女 教 育 是 華 裔 家 長 的 頭 等 大 事 , 很 多 父 母 為 孩 子 的 學 習 成 績
憂 心 , 運 用 正 確 的 教 育 方 法 , 很 多 煩 憂 便 可 迎 刃 而 解 , 教 育 子 女 也
可 以 變 得 輕 松 。
信 任 老 師
在 我 的 親 身 經 歷 中 , 有 很 多 家 長 為 工 作 而 忙 碌 , 移 民 來 美 只 有
很 短 的 時 間 , 也 有 些 本 身 並 未 有 受 過 高 等 教 育 , 卻 都 在 子 女 的 教 育
上 獲 得 成 功 , 沒 有 太 大 操 心 。 孩 子 的 成 績 很 優 秀 。 我 們 發 現 秘 訣 就
是 找 到 合 適 的 課 外 輔 導 老 師 來 幫 助 孩 子 有 效 地 完 成 課 業 的 重 任 。 一
位 稱 職 的 輔 導 老 師 除 要 有 豐 富 的 經 驗 和 愛 心 外 , 還 要 有 真 正 為 學 生
負 責 任 和 堅 持 不 懈 提 高 學 生 學 習 的 心 態 。
有 很 大 部 份 的 家 長 以 為 將 孩 子 送 到 補 習 班 。 讓 老 師 把 課 業 內 容 進 行
講 解 便 可 以 。 結 果 學 生 們 花 了 時 間 。 但 一 做 練 習 便 不 知 所 措 。 大 部
份 學 過 的 知 識 不 會 運 用 於 解 題 上 。 還 有 些 學 生 把 剛 剛 學 過 的 內 容 在
幾 個 星 期 後 便 完 全 忘 記 了 , 又 要 從 頭 再 學 。
這 些 問 題 在 初 中 階 段 的 學 生 中 很 常 見 , 如 果 不 及 早 解 決 , 會 耽
誤 孩 子 的 進 一 步 發 展 。 因 為 到 了 10 年 級 , 一 部 份 的 孩 子 會 因 跟 不 上
學 業 進 度 而 放 棄 努 力 。 這 類 學 生 , 如 果 接 受 適 合 的 輔 導 及 幫 助 , 還
有 機 會 彌 補 過 去 的 缺 失 , 最 終 進 入 不 錯 的 大 學 。 關 鍵 是 無 論 在 任 何
情 況 , 家 長 需 及 時 為 孩 尋 求 幫 助 , 否 則 便 會 錯 失 這 關 鍵 的 時 刻 。
請 家 長 們 千 萬 不 要 錯 過 利 用 暑 期 給 孩 子 機 會 學 習 , 奠 定 紮 實 的 基 礎
6~8 年 級 , 這 3 年 直 接 決 定 孩 子 今 後 的 學 業 是 否 優 秀 , 是 否 具
備 成 為 精 英 的 能 力 ! 適 時 啟 發 孩 子 的 思 維 能 力 和 加 深 學 習 難 度 都 是
必 須 的 , 因 為 每 個 孩 子 都 有 提 升 的 空 間 和 發 揮 的 潛 力 。
美 國 6~8 年 級 的 學 習 科 目 較 少 內 容 也 很 簡 單 , 很 多 孩 子 一 學 期 下 來
很 容 易 拿 個 A。 但 很 多 基 本 功 夫 不 扎 實 , 對 知 識 的 理 解 不 深 入 或 者
學 習 方 式 不 正 確 及 壞 的 學 習 習 慣 。

這 個 階 段 的 孩 子 頭 腦 還 在 發 展 中 , 有 很 大 的 可 塑 性 , 如 通 過 一 些
有 效 的 學 習 , 對 未 來 的 發 展 非 常 重 要 。 學 生 到 了 10 年 級 以 後 ,
學 習 強 度 越 來 越 大 , 沒 有 前 期 的 良 好 學 習 基 礎 , 學 生 會 很 難 應 付
自 如 。
很 多 10 至 12 年 級 的 學 生 , 一 般 都 是 那 一 科 落 後 , 就 趕 緊 加 強 那
科 。 無 法 做 到 有 系 統 性 和 連 貫 性 , 很 難 有 進 一 步 的 能 力 提 升 。
孩 子 就 如 一 粒 種 子 , 學 習 環 境 就 是 土 壤 , 水 份 與 陽 光 。 教 育 是
將 種 子 放 在 最 適 合 的 環 境 中 生 長 。 想 要 把 孩 子 變 得 更 聰 明 , 更 有 能
力 , 就 需 要 在 6~8 年 級 中 尋 求 突 破 。 過 了 這 個 階 段 , 孩 子 基 本 上 已
經 定 型 。 只 能 從 現 有 基 礎 上 作 出 一 些 修 補 , 成 績 可 以 變 得 好 一 點 ,
但 沒 有 辦 法 得 到 本 質 上 的 變 化 。
因 此 , 家 長 需 為 孩 子 的 未 來 提 早 作 好 準 備 , 持 續 幫 助 督 導 他 們 學 業
上 的 進 展 , 有 問 題 提 早 找 辦 法 解 決 。 因 為 初 中 階 段 基 礎 沒 打 好 , 到
進 入 高 中 時 學 習 便 很 費 力 , 成 績 上 下 波 動 , 從 而 影 響 自 信 心 。 有 些
學 生 沒 有 一 個 有 效 的 學 習 方 法 , 成 績 不 如 理 想 , 造 成 他 不 能 選 修 一
些 高 難 度 的 AP 課 程 , 失 去 一 個 挑 戰 自 我 的 機 會 。 如 遇 上 一 些 有 難 度
的 考 試 時 便 產 生 恐 懼 與 逃 避 , 變 得 完 全 沒 有 競 爭 力 。
因 此 6~8 年 級 的 學 術 能 力 , 將 決 定 高 中 階 段 的 考 試 成 績 和 課 程 安
排 。 暑 期 是 升 學 競 爭 的 起 跑 點 , 能 啟 動 孩 子 的 進 步 能 力 , 幫 助 孩 子
預 習 精 修 英 , 數 , 科 學 等 課 程 ,
爭 取 學 期 高 分 成 績 ,
保 持 領 先 ,
培 養 孩 子 的 自 信 心 及 競 爭 力 。
