Before I even started this project, I was already curious
on how “digital publications” work. I have a bunch
of magazine apps like Zinio and I even have an active
subscription for TIME in digital format. The ease of use
and overall accessibility of this digital formats are so
amazing. You don’t have to bring anything with you
if you want to read, just your phone or tablet and you
can gain access to your book or magazine library anytime
anywhere.
What really got my attention was how easy it was to
distribute without any upfront costs. Apple iBooks offers
free books, Zinio offers free magazines, Amazon
and Kobo Books also offers free content to their ever
increasing readerbase. I studied a lot of this stuff because
I also want to create and design a magazine and
although it was never easy at first (specially with Apple),
everything was well worth it when Apple finally
published Phygure®’s very first issue on their iBooks
store.
The good thing about somewhat “perfecting” Apple’s
strict design standards in terms of creating a magazine
(or a book) is that you’re pretty much covered if you
also want to publish on other platforms like Amazon
or Kobo (and luckily enough, we also got published on
Kobo Books!). I tried publishing on Amazon but they
require that the magazine/book must have a minimum
price of 1 USD. I know it’s just a very small amount but
I want Phygure® to be freely accessible to everyone.
