THE RIVER GARDEN

The River Garden is a modern
courtyard garden in an idyllic
setting- looking out over a
meandering river with a lush watermeadow
beyond. The client’s brief
was to make the most of their
waterside location and the outlook
across the flood plain.
To achieve this, four gentle
changes of level help to enhance
the views and ‘borrow’ the
landscape beyond. The geometric
design, with an emphasis on the
horizontal, maximises the width
of the garden and helps to frame
the view. The lower terrace is
inspired by the idea of a jetty,
extending out over the water and
wrapping around the tree. The
curved seating provides a pleasing
afternoon spot to sit in the sun and
watch the world drift by.
Blue Grey Granite was chosen
for its contemporary look and
warm colour, which matches
the architectural detailing on
the bi-fold doors. Custom built
seats maximise the terrace
space, whilst providing plenty of
seating and a deceptive feeling of
spaciousness in what is a small
garden. Furniture and planters
were carefully chosen to complete
the detailing. The colourful bird
cushions were ordered from New
Zealand after the client saw the
designer’s own ones (bought on a
trip back to her native country).

The planting scheme combines
grasses for their long season of
interest with flowering perennials.
Three pre-existing trees were
incorporated into the design,
helping to complete the garden
by framing the views, providing
height and focal points.
