16 CITYof ALE 2016
MESSAGE from Roger Protz Norwich may be out on a limb geographically but it's at the heart of the Great British Beer Revolution. City of Ale has become, in just a few short years, an institution that has inspired several other towns and cities to stage beer events that have moved away from one static location and involve pubs as well as drinkers. Pubs, the heart of communities, are going through a difficult time and, by focussing on pubs, City of Ale is playing an important role in saving pubs and encouraging people to use them on a regular basis. Above all, City of Ale has turned the spotlight on the enormous choice of good beer available in East Anglia, a region once ravaged by giant national brewers but which now has scores of craft brewers delighting drinkers with the brilliance of their brews. Roger Protz Editor, Good Beer Guide Adnams Sole Bay Brewery, East Green, Southwold, Suffolk, IP18 6JW 01502 727200 www.adnams.co.uk info@adnams.co.uk e earliest record of beer being brewed at the Sole Bay Brewery dates back to 1345. In 1872, the Adnams family arrived in Southwold, they bought the Sole Bay Brewery and a new phase of history began. e brewery demonstrates a perfect marriage of old and new - the Victorian façade hides what is possibly the UK’s most environmentally efficient, state-of-the art brewing facility. It is where Fergus Fitzgerald, our Master Brewer, and his team create a growing range of award-winning Adnams beers. BREWERY information All Day Salle Brewery, Salle Moor Farm, Wood Dalling Road, Salle, Norfolk, NR10 4SB 01603 951173 www.alldaybrewing.co.uk info@alldaybrewing.co.uk All Day Brewing Company was set up in 2014 on a working farm in Salle, mid Norfolk. We use water from our own borehole, and malts from Norfolk maltsters. We have a 1/4 acre hopyard with over 350 hop plants, and nine varieties. We use a traditional tall-trellised (Worcestershire) system. We produced over 160kg of wet hops last year, which we used to make the first ever large batch of Norfolk green hop ale. We chose to freeze the rest of our crop, rather than dry it and are using these to brew a different ale each month. We also have a tap room and tasting room.
