STATEMENT of SUPPORT FROM THE LORD MAYOR
As I prepare myself for literally
taking up the chains
of office as Norwich's
Lord Mayor for 2016/17,
I would like to offer you
all a very warm welcome
to our annual city-wide
celebration of being the
country's City of Ale.
Now in its sixth year, this
festival represents a significant permanent addition to
the city's programme of annual events celebrating and
showcasing our many varied specialities and activities.
e provision of ingredients to make beer, the actual
art of brewing real ale and its dispensing in convivial
premises are all important trades for the city and its
surrounding area, and contribute to its overall prominence
in the Eastern region. e sheer number of pubs
and breweries in this area gives us every reason to
encourage and promote their use. Not only does the
festival give you the chance to visit a wide range of
pubs across the city, you have the simultaneous
opportunity of exploring the extensive range of shops,
theatres and eateries that also make Norwich famous.
On behalf of the city, I would like to thank the
co-chairs, Dawn Leeder and Phil Cutter, for their tireless
efforts in bringing the festival into existence each year.
Without them, we would simply not be the City of
Ale. I would also like to thanks Woodforde's for
offering me the unique opportunity of travelling to
the launch event in their magnificent horse-drawn
dray. By the time of the launch party, I will have
assumed office, so in anticipation of that, I am
delighted to declare the Festival "open"; go forth,
explore and enjoy all that Norwich has to offer.
A MESSAGE from
NORWICH CAMRA
On behalf of the Norwich &
Norfolk Branch of the Campaign for
Real Ale (CAMRA) I would like to
extend a warm welcome to everyone
attending the sixth City of Ale Festival,
which I’m sure will be bigger and
better than ever!
If you’re reading this programme, then you probably
know that Norwich has a multitude of excellent pubs,
and Norwich and Norfolk between them boast around
forty breweries, and I expect you’re looking forward to
enjoying some of the products of the latter in the former!
Publicity generated by the first five City of Ale events,
plus some subtle and not-so-subtle promotion from
Norwich & Norfolk CAMRA, has ensured that Norwich
is one of the first places mentioned whenever beer
destinations are discussed. And the idea of a city-wide
beer festival has since been taken up across the country,
from Bristol to Manchester and London to Sheffield,
but it started here in Norfolk – the county which also
just happens to make some of the best malting barley
in the world.
Norwich is also home to one of the biggest and oldest
beer festivals in the country, the 39th edition of which
will run from October 24th – 29th, and for the next
three years we are hosting the National Winter Ales
Festival in February. So please enjoy the City of Ale,
and don’t forget to raise a glass or two to the people
who make it happen – the wonderful publicans and
brewers of this Fine City and County!
MESSAGE from
Roger Protz
Norwich may be out on
a limb geographically
but it's at the heart of the
Great British Beer Revolution.
City of Ale has
become, in just a few
short years, an institution
that has inspired several
other towns and cities to
stage beer events that
have moved away from
one static location and involve pubs as well as
drinkers. Pubs, the heart of communities, are going
through a difficult time and, by focussing on pubs,
City of Ale is playing an important role in saving
pubs and encouraging people to use them on a
regular basis. Above all, City of Ale has turned the
spotlight on the enormous choice of good beer
available in East Anglia, a region once ravaged by
giant national brewers but which now has scores of
craft brewers delighting drinkers with the brilliance
of their brews.
Each Golden Moment –
this year’s charity beer in
support of East Anglia's Children's Hospices.
City of Ale’s selected charity for 2016 is East
Anglia’s Children's Hospices (EACH). EACH cares
for children and young people with life-threatening
conditions, supporting their families across East
Anglia, and is a lifeline to so many families at an
unimaginably difficult time.
e beer, specially brewed by Woodforde’s, is a
4.1% golden fruity session IPA. Crisp Malting
Group have donated the malt for the brew and
Woodforde’s will be donating 20p for every pint sold.
e pump clip is designed by Caz Jones who
produces all the City of Ale artwork.
“We are thrilled that City of Ale and Woodforde’s
have chosen to support EACH through sales of their
charity beer” said Mark Loades of EACH. “All the
money raised from the sales of this beer will go
towards providing these vital services.”
“We are very proud to be supporting the City of
Ale and the charity EACH” said Belinda Jennings,
Woodforde’s Head Brewer. “We are excited to have
this opportunity to produce this new special beer for
a worthy charity”.
A competition to name the new beer attracted a
record number of entries. e winning name,
“Each Golden Moment”, was submitted by Scott
Edwards of Norwich, who wins two VIP tickets to
the City of Ale Launch Party where he will be
presented with a demipin of the ale.
We hope that all City of Ale publicans will consider
stocking the beer - and that everyone will try a pint
or two - and support this very worthwhile cause.
Bullards Brewery
Bullards is a name that is synonymous with the brewing
heritage of Norwich. Beginning at the Anchor
Brewery in 1837, Richard Bullard along with son
Harry and further generations supplied a range of
hugely popular beers across the county of Norfolk. By
1895, when Bullard & Sons came into being, the
brand had become an established name in the City.
2015 marked the rebirth of a local iconic brand.
Bullards has established new recipes for modern cask
beer drinkers inspired by tradition, yet brought up to
date. Beginning with two contemporary beers reinvigorating
the brand, Norwich has rekindled a heritage
that began over 170 years ago. Bullards was brilliant
then, better now. www.bullardsbeers.co.uk/
British Guild of
Beer Writers
As lovers of - and prolific commentators on - all things
beer and pubs, the British Guild of Beer Writers have
been long-time fans of City of Ale.
“It is a fantastic achievement in its own right,” says
Guild chair Tim Hampson, “and has the added benefit
of providing endless opportunities for beer writing,
broadcasting and blogging!
“Our members have also been invited to give beer
talks and tutored tastings - and we’re extremely grateful
to City of Ale for enthusiastically involving us in the
events. Check out the tastings at St Andrew’s Brew
House on Friday 27th – definitely worth attending!”
Many who love beer are keen to talk about it. Some
have greater ambitions. As Tim says, “If you write, blog
or ‘vlog’ about brewing, beer and pubs, you should
consider joining the Guild. It doesn’t matter whether
you’re a keen amateur or seasoned journalist: there are
different levels of membership, so you’ll fit in somewhere.
“Everyone can benefit from the training and professional
support of the Guild and the great shop window
we provide. Commissioners of work in the worlds of
radio and TV broadcasting; video production; book,
newspaper and magazine publishing; in-house publications;
on-line publications; and event management
have used our membership lists to find spokespeople,
presenters and writers. You could be one of them.
“And then there are the social events – like gathering at
Norwich City of Ale to celebrate a stupendous array of ales!”
