Nature Trails and Walkways
We have the most beautiful natural
environment at Zimbali Coastal Resort, and
members may have noticed the demarcation of
the nature trails and walkways at all juncture
points with Strelitizia Nicolai stems, which
was successfully completed in February 2016.
ZEMA is currently facilitating the production of
a Nature Trail Map & Brochure that will include
all points of interest, and give information about
Zimbali’s flora and fauna to residents and
visitors who wish to navigate and enjoy these
wonderful nature trails.
Thermal Cameras on the Fence
Line
Phase 2 and 3 of the project remains on track
for completion by the end of April 2016.
BBC Tennis Courts
Tennis enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that
ZEMA will be upgrading our Bushbuck Club
tennis courts from the 18th of April 2016.
This upgrade will entail resurfacing the courts,
refurbishing the fence posts and installing
new fencing on all four courts. We will also
be building a practice wall on the fourth court.
Unfortunately, this will require that the courts
be closed until completion of the upgrade and
improvements at the end of May 2016, and we
apologise for any inconvenience caused – but
assure you that it will all be well worth it.
BBC Facilities
We are pleased to advise that the additional
parking extension at the BBC was completed
in February 2016. This improvement has been
welcomed by members who visit and use
the facilities at the BBC, and was fully utilised
over the Easter period. The recently upgraded
kiddies’ playground has also been a huge
success with our Zimbali little ones.
The Local Authority has made some
amendments to its National Invasive Species
List, which may affect Zimbali members,
especially if you are buying or selling a property.
Some of the specifics are listed below and are
worth noting.
The National Invasive Species List currently
comprises 559 invasive species in 4 categories:
• Invasive species are now regarded as a
liability and must be identified before the
sale of any property.
• The NEMBA (National Environmental
Management: Biodiversity Act) Regulations
state that a seller of property must - prior
to the relevant sale agreement - notify the
purchaser in writing of the presence of
listed invasive species on that property. A
copy of a seller’s Declaration of Invasive
Species must be lodged with the
Compliance Officer, Biosecurity Services
and the Department of Environmental
Affairs.
• Estate agents will not be able to sell a
property without completing a ‘Declaration
of Invasive Species’ certificate.
• Horticultural and fauna experts can sign
up to become invasive species consultants,
capable of identifying invasive species on a
property and signing off on a ‘Declaration
of Invasive Species’ certificate.
• Permits are now required for 118 Category
2 invasive species.
ZEMA SECURITY
ALBERT RODE
ZEMA Security Manager
The ZEMA Security Department is mandated
to uphold, implement and enforce the Rules,
Protocols and Directives of Zimbali. In order for
ZEMA to maintain its high standard of security
levels within the Estate, ZEMA would like to
advise new members– and remind existing
members -of the following:
Access
Each owner shall be responsible for the safe
keeping and proper use of his/her individual
remote/access card/disc and shall not permit
the use thereof by unauthorised persons.
Guest Cards
Members may request a maximum of two guest
cards per household at a cost R70.00 each. The
cards are programmed for the duration of the
time that the member’s guest would be visiting
the Estate. ZEMA Access Control supplies the
cards and the Welcome Centre is responsible
for programming.
Access Disc Allocation
A maximum of four access discs/remotes may
be issued to an owner, linked to individual ID
numbers. In the case where the owner owns
more than one property, the maximum number
of discs may not be increased and remains at 4.
Land = 1, Commencement of building = 2,
Occupation = 4.
Visitors
Members are to complete a Member’s Guest
Notification Form in the event that a guest is
staying overnight.
Rental guests on the estate are not permitted
to grant access to any other guests, except in
exceptional circumstances where ZEMA has
issued prior express authorisation.
Day Visitors
Members obtain reference numbers for day
visitors. This enables an access card to be
issued to a visitor in order for them to gain
entry to the specific member’s house.
The Visitors Management system (VMS) is
an SMS system that has been implemented
at Zimbali to make the issuing of reference
numbers a quick and easy process for our
members.
Noise/Nuisance Policy
Music and noise must at all times be
unobtrusive and contained at reasonable levels
so as not to create a disturbance or become a
nuisance to fellow residents.
Contractors Working Hours
Contractors are permitted on the Estate from
06h45 to 17h30 with a grace period of 30 min in
order to leave the Estate. This is only applicable
from Monday to Friday. No contractors are
permitted on the Estate over weekends to
work, except in the case of an emergency such
as electrical and plumbing issues,or appliance
breakdowns (fridge, stove etc.).
ZIMBALI NEWS
BOARD REPORT
ZEMA’s 19th AGM on 10 June 2016
The 2016 AGM will be held on Friday 10 June
2016 at the Bushbuck Club commencing at
09h00. Members’ AGM packs will be posted to
them 21 clear days prior to the AGM. The ZEMA
Board looks forward to a good turnout this
year and to updating Members on everything
that has happened in the past year. In the
meantime, there are a few important matters
that we would like to update Members on prior
to the AGM.
Rectification and Transfer on Initial
Cloudberry Contract
At last year’s 2015 AGM, we reported that before
we could facilitate the application to SARS to
qualify Cloudberry Investments 21 (Pty) Ltd
as a registered VAT vendor and apply for the
transaction to be zero-rated due to it being a
disposal of a going concern, a signed copy of
the new Cloudberry Sales Agreement had to be
included in the SARS application. At the time
of the AGM, ZEMA (whose management had
been authorised by the Directors of Cloudberry
Investments in November 2014 to administer
Cloudberry and manage all statutory
documentation) was awaiting THD and ZDC’s
signature to the new Cloudberry contract.
Unfortunately, in the weeks that followed, ZEMA
was unsuccessful in obtaining the signatures of
THD, ZDC and TIFAZ and, to this day, no official
explanation has been provided as to why those
parties were not prepared to sign. It is noted
that the TIFAZ signatory had signed the new
contract and had then officially withdrawn the
signature.
By the end of August 2015, when it became
clear that the above parties were not going
to sign the contract, the Board proceeded to
take steps to enforce the original Cloudberry
agreement on legal advice. The second
Cloudberry agreement was incomplete (due
to lack of signatures) and therefore the
Purchaser’s rights could not be enforced under
the second agreement at all. However, the
first (original) signed sales agreement dated
21 December 2007 remains valid and binding
and the Purchaser’s rights under it have
not prescribed. On that basis, the first sales
agreement was capable of rectification, subject
to Cloudberry (the Purchaser) being able to
prove the requirements of rectification. As
such, Cloudberry can proceed legally to obtain
rectification as long as it can be illustrated
that the common intention of the parties was
to incorporate all the properties in the first
sales agreement, including those that had
subsequently been added to the second sales
agreement. Since the property annexures had
voluntarily been added by the Seller (ZDC) to
the second agreement, it can easily be proved
that the Seller had intended to include these
properties initially and that they had simply
been omitted in error by the parties to the first
sales agreement.
A letter was sent to ZDC on 9 March 2016
requesting rectification of the first agreement
and for ZDC to proceed with the transfer of the
properties to Cloudberry. At the time of writing
this article, no response from ZDC has been
received.
10

Should ZDC not agree to rectification of the first
sales agreement and to transfer proceeding,
then Cloudberry Investments 21 (Pty) Ltd
will commence proceedings in the High Court
with a view to obtaining the rectification order
and an order directing ZDC to proceed with
the transfer of the properties to Cloudberry
Investments 21 (Pty) Ltd.
Telecommunications Projects
ZEMA has been hard at work over the past few
months to try to “improve cellular signal” and
facilitate a “full community fibre-to-the-home
(FTTH) infrastructure installation”. We’ve faced
many unexpected obstacles in our quest to
finalise these projects, but we want to assure
Members that Telecommunications remains at
the top of the agenda and that we will continue
to treat it with the utmost priority.
Much has happened since we last reported
on these projects, but we will endeavour to
summarise as much as possible on what has
transpired.
(1) Cellular Masts to Improve Signal
Coverage
We last reported on the Cellular Mast project
in October 2015. Since then, 3 sites were
identified for mast installations, being:
1. ZEMA Workshop (Westgate)
2. ZCC Tennis Courts (Vacant Land)
3. Fairmont Zimbali Hotel
It is important to note that sufficient
improvement of signal coverage for the Estate
cannot be achieved without masts being
installed at these three strategic locations, or
within close proximity to all three sites, at the
least.
Once the mast specs and locations were
established, Members were invited to attend a
public participation presentation by ATC/EMSS
on 12 November 2015 at the BBC, which took
place successfully. Lease agreements between
respective landowners and ATC were then
negotiated and prepared.
The lease for the ZEMA Workshop site was
signed on 4 March 2016 and the application
to build was lodged with KDM for approval.
As this usually takes about 6 months, ATC
committed to installing a temporary mast. At
the time of writing this article, ZEMA was not
satisfied with the proposed temporary mast
design and negotiations were underway with
ATC to provide a mast that was more visually
acceptable.
For the ZCC Tennis Courts site (which is ZDCowned
land leased to ZCC), ZDC was not willing
to give consent for ZCC to sign the lease, so
ZEMA then identified an alternative site on
ZEMA-owned land 22 metres north of the
ZCC Tennis Courts site. At the time of writing
this article, the lease agreement had just been
signed and the same statutory process as the
above Workshop site will now follow, with a
temporary mast also to be installed.
For the Fairmont Zimbali Hotel site, the
proposed ATC roof-mast was considered by IFA
to be obtrusive and aesthetically unacceptable,
so IFA decided to instead appoint Vodacom
to install a small, unobtrusive roof-mast in
addition to the roof-masts already installed by
MTN and Telkom. Vodacom’s mast will also
include the Cell C network, so it will cater to
the four primary cellular networks. At the time
of writing this article, IFA was in the process
of giving final approval for the design of the
Vodacom mast, before signing the lease
agreement.
11

(2) Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) Infrastructure
Following the tender and review process,
Vodacom was appointed in November 2015.
As we’re sure residents can appreciate, this
is a massive project for which ZEMA needs to
ensure all its bases are covered. So, with the
assistance of ZEMA’s attorneys and expert
telecommunications consultant, over the past
few weeks, ZEMA has been negotiating with
Vodacom to ensure that all the clauses in the
very intricate Grant of Rights (GoR) contract
are airtight before signing.
The biggest challenge, which has been
extremely time-consuming and frustrating at
times, has been to try and finalise which of
the two existing conduit infrastructures can be
used to install the fibre-cabling throughout the
Estate. The two conduit infrastructures are the
Telkom sleeves and the Sewer infrastructure,
respectively the domains of Telkom and
SempcorpSiza Water. This has involved
lengthy and extensive negotiations with the
respective owners of the infrastructures in
order to get consent for Vodacom to utilize the
chosen infrastructure. At the time of writing this
article, we had finally started to see substantial
progress in the negotiations and therefore
hope to finalise and sign the official Vodacom
contract within a few days.
We underestimated the technological, logistical
and legal complexities involved to get both the
Cellular Masts and Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH)
projects finalised and we would like to thank
Members for their patience and understanding
during this lengthy process.
By the time of the AGM, we sincerely hope that
we will have positive news for Members by
being able to announce that both projects are
already well underway.
Land Excision Matter – Driving Range Site
This is the litigation between ZEMA and
TIFAZ, which relates to the vacant land known
generally as the Driving Range Site. This is the
land that borders on the main road, the M4,
and is situated immediately to the north of the
Zimbali South Gate.
In the pending litigation ZEMA seeks two
orders of court. In summary, these are that:
1. The portions of land constituting the Driving
Range Site are properties that form part of
Zimbali Coastal Resort, and
2. These properties were,
(a) not rezoned pursuant to an application in
terms of the Development Facilitation Act and
accordingly remain subject to the use zoning
“sports amenity” which applied prior to the
application in terms of the above Act, and
(b) not incorporated into “Zimbali Lakes
Resort” for the purpose of the Town Planning
Scheme.
It was agreed that initially only the first issue
would be heard.
The hearing commenced before Mr Justice
van Zyl on 4 March 2015 and continued on 5
and 6 March 2015. It was then adjourned and
continued on 17 and 18 June 2015. At that
stage, the parties had led the evidence which
they required and the matter was adjourned for
argument.
Travel Tales . . .
Travel Tales . . .
Trip to Japan
After a wonderful trip to Angkor Wat in Cambodia
and then a similarly great cruise from
Singapore to Shanghai visiting Vietnam and
Hong Kong with Margaret and Bryan Jackson,
Carlos and I embarked on a tour of Japan to
watch the cherry blossons.
We arrivedin Tokyo thefirst week of April at the
peak of the flowering season. There are many
popular viewing spots in the city and the people
celebrate the arrival of spring and the much
loved sakura or cherry blossom by having parties
under the trees. There are beautiful parks
and we visited them all. Shinjuku Goen is perhaps
Tokyo’s most beautiful public space. The
Imperial Palace gardens were wonderful too
and we were lucky that part of it was opened
to the public on the day we visited. The most
festive park being Ueno. One of our favourites
was the smaller Hama-rikyu gardens and the
Sumida Park next to the river. Tokyo is a very
vibrant, clean city with a fantastic, punctual
transport system. It certainly has the best shopping
in the world.
From Tokyo we visited Kanazawa and Kyoto
by shinkansen (bullet train) where we spent a
week also visiting the gardens of Kenrokuen
in Kanazawa next to the castle and considered
one of japans three most beautiful gardens.
In Kyoto, apart from the gardens of Kinkakuji
(golden temple) and Ginkakuji, imperial palace
and Kyomizu-dera Temple , there were also the
famous zen gardens of Ryonanji Temple.Kyoto
was the capital of Japan for over 1 000 years
until 1868. It is regarded the spiritual home
of the Japanese peopleand still maintains
the essence of Japanese art and culture. It is
known for its imposing temples and shrines,
traditional handicrafts and art such as the tea
ceremony, where women still dress in their
beautiful kimonos and where you can still spot
a Maiko in the Geisha district.
A wonderful experience we will cherish forever.
PUB QUIZ
ZCC PUB QUIZ MORE POPULAR THAN
EVER!!!
On Wednesday April 13th, ZCC held its second
Trivia Pub Quiz evening for the 2016 year. It is
a tribute indeed to ZCC’s social programmes
for members that the Pub Quiz evening has
become so popular that many members are
even arranging their local & overseas travels
in order not to miss this very well-supported
‘fun’ occasion!!! Some 86 eager ‘quizzers’
representing 11 teams attended this function
and it proved to be one of the most challenging
and keenly contested events held in its 5
year history. Hosted by resident Quiz Master,
David Manly, many of the questions proved
to be very thought-provoking & stimulating
to the point where eager debate and counter
debate occurred with frequency!!
In the final analysis, the Memorial Silver Salver
Trophy was won by “The Brainy Bunch”
followed closely by “The Interlopers” and the
“Zimbali Freedom Front” in joint second place
and “Let’s Get Quizzical” in third position. So,
yet another nail biting & keenly fought contest
right to the end!!
The evening was rounded off with a lovely
meal provided by the attentive ZCC staff and
the fun, laughter and ‘deliberation’ continued
long into the evening.
The next Quiz evening is scheduled to take
place on Wednesday June 29th and bookings
can be made with David Manly on dmanly@
BIG WAVE
Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker
We welcome Grant and his
beautiful girls Kate and Billi
to our beautiful estate.
1. How are you enjoying living on our
beautiful estate?
My wife Kate and baby Billi moved onto the
estate in January and we have been very
happy so far. The privacy and quite has been
amazing and we love the pools and private
beach for surfing, fishing and diving. We use
the gym regularly and will start playing golf
and tennis soon. It’s been my dream to live in
Zimbali forever and I couldn’t think of a better
place to live, work and raise a family.
2. Do you manage to surf close by?
Yes, there are fantastic waves all around us
and within a 30 minute drive there are enough
world class waves to keep me busy for a long
time.
3. Please tell us about your achievements
as a big wave surfer.
I’ve always been a bit of a travelling surf bum
and was fortunate to win a few events along
the way to help fund my lifestyle through prize
money and sponsorship. Competitive surfing
is mostly down to luck as the ocean has to
co-operate with you in order to do well so all
my achievements, including a World Title in
2014 and two Mavericks Invitational events
and wins in Spain, Chile and Australia have
been a blessing to help me live the type of life
I always dreamed of.
4. To what do you attribute your
huge success?
Being in the right place at the right time and
then taking full advantage of the situation presented
to you. You need to recognise those
special moments, be prepared for them and
then give it your all.
5. Do you have any advice for young
surfers who would like to achieve?
Whatever it is in your life that you want to
achieve, focus on the important stuff and forget
the rest. Know what you want and go directly
after it, don’t stop and smell the flowers
along the way, there will be plenty of time for
that when you are older
6. Do you ever feel afraid or doubt
your ability under such challenging
circumstances?
The great thing with surfing and big waves in
particular is that its all relative to each individuals
experience in the ocean. The fear and
feelings that I get when faced with a huge
wave in The Eddie event is exactly the same

SURFER
as that which a beginner feels when they are
faced with what they perceive as a big wave.
“Dont panic after you panic” is a good saying
that I try to remember. Once you taste that
fear it is important to then recognise it, accept
it and deal with the situation as calmly as possible.
7. Do you follow any particular diet
and exercise regime?
Yes I have a personal trainer who works with
me in Ballito (Dwain Siegers) who is amazing.
My wife Kate makes sure I’m only eating
the best food at all times and I try to do some
form of exercise every day be it surfing, swimming,
SUPing, diving or gym work
8. Tell us about your family.
Having my Daughter Billi 3 months ago
has been an incredible experience that has
changed my life for the better in so many
ways. Watching my wife Kate grow as a human
while she grew our daughter inside her
has blown me away and then how natural and
calm she is as a mother is awe inspiring every
day. I couldn’t be happier with my little piece
of paradise.
9. What do you think the future
holds……
My immediate plan is to spend more time at
home than I have in the past 10 years and only
travel out of South Africa for the 8 events that
run around the world on the www.WSL.com
big wave tour, for a few days at a time. Having
a house in Zimbali will make this a whole lot
more enjoyable.

Ask the Doctor
Dr Rosie Carey
Email: rosiek@absamail.co.za
de•men•tia
d ‘men(t)SH(ē)
noun: dementia
a chronic or persistent disorder of the
mental processes caused by brain disease
or injury and marked by memory disorders,
personality changes, and impaired reasoning.
It started imperceptibly. It was small things
at first: giving up on crosswords and doing
simple word-searches instead; forgetting
her favourite recipes; failing to read an easy
knitting pattern. She hid it well too, putting
her forgetfulness down to stress or anxiety.
By the time we realized that there was a
problem, my grandmother was well along the
path to full-blown dementia. Looking back
now, I realize that there was probably also
an element of denial that played a role in her
late diagnosis. None of us, her grandchildren
and children, wanted to believe that she had
dementia: not this woman who had been so
vivacious, strong-willed and independent
her whole life. But the harsh reality is that,
with the prevalence of dementia sitting at
around 14% of the population over 71 years
of age, none of us can afford to be in denial.
Dementia is going to affect most of us in
some way or another.
So, what is dementia? What causes it and
can it be treated or, even better, prevented?
The commonest form of Dementia is
Alzheimer’s Dementia (AD), accounting for 60-
80% of cases of dementia. It is characterized
by memory loss, behavioural and personality
changes and decreased cognitive function.
Less common forms of dementia include
vascular dementia, Lewy-body dementia,
HIV dementia and frontotemporal dementia.
The biggest risk factors for dementia are
age and genetics, however, there are other
modifiable risk factors such as smoking,
high blood pressure, poor diet, diabetes and
eating beef from suspect cows (having said
that, ‘mad cow disease’ is a very rare cause
of dementia!).
The pathophysiology of dementia depends
largely on the cause. With the normal aging
process, deposits of abnormal proteins
collect in the brain in very tiny amounts.
These are called plaques (made up of Betaamyloid
proteins) and tangles (made up of
Tau proteins) and are visible on scanning of
the brain. In AD, there is massively increased
deposition of plaques and tangles in the
brain. This protein deposition tends to take
place first in the area of the brain responsible
for memory, which is why memory loss is
one of the earliest signs of AD. Although we
don’t understand exactly how the plaques
and tangles cause AD, it appears that they
block communication between nerve cells
in the brain. Vascular dementia, the result
of uncontrolled hypertension, is caused by
26

progressive, subtle brain damage resulting
from very many tiny strokes. The end result is
also a deficiency in communication between
brain cells, although in vascular dementia it
is not necessarily memory that declines first.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for dementia,
however, there are a couple of drugs that,
if given in the early stages of dementia,
can slow down progression of the disease.
Towards the end stages of dementia, medical
management focuses largely on managing
the symptoms of the dementia: depression,
anxiety and even aggression.
Early diagnosis of dementia is imperative,
not only because the drugs used in dementia
work best in the early stages of the disease,
but because early recognition and diagnosis
allow the patient and the family to adjust
to the diagnosis. People with dementia
tend to have less anxiety and display
fewer symptoms when they are in familiar
environments, around familiar people, and
following a familiar routine. For this reason,
it’s a good idea to hire caregivers early on in
the course of the disease and, if the patient
is eventually going to move into a home, to
house them there while they are still aware
of their surroundings. Any disturbance of
environment or routine in the later stages of
the disease can lead to an acute worsening of
the symptoms.
Dementia is something that few people want
to talk about, because it’s horrible and, quite
frankly, it’s scary. But it’s there and the better
prepared the patient and family is for it, the
less traumatic the course of the disease will
be.
Support for patients with AD as well as their
caregivers can be found at: www.alzheimers.
Need something
to read?
Saving Sophie by Ronald Balson
Balson’s first novel “Once We Were
Brothers” was an international success.
This novel opens in Chicago where we meet
Jack Sommers . He is leaving in a hurry. Up
until a year ago his life was idyllic. He had
a good job as an attorney in a prestigious
legal company was married to a beautiful
Palestinian woman, Alina and they had a
sweet little girl called Sophie. After visiting
her sick mother in Hebron she returns to
America and dies within in a few days of a
mysterious illness. After a bitter custody
battle, Jack is awarded custody and her
Grandparents are awarded weekend visiting
rights. However on one of their visits Sophie
is kidnapped by her grandparents and taken
to Palestine. Jack is desperate to get her
back and becomes involved in a scheme to
embezzle a client out of 88 million dollars.
PI Liam Taggart and fiancée lawyer Catherine
Lockhart are called in to investigate the
embezzlement which is complicated by
child kidnapping and terrorist activity in
Hebron. The FBI agents, Jeff Miller and Kayla
Cummings believe the missing money could
be funding an extremist group led by Alina’s
father Dr Arif al – Zahani. They set out to
thwart a major terrorist attack
Balson’s research is extensive and a highly
accurate account of the conflict of Jewish,
Muslim and Christian ideals. This is the
backbone of the story and shows how
centuries of discord have not resolved these
difference. There is a wealth of information
about the history of Palestine and Israel and
the fragile peace that exists in the region
We read about the lengths a father will go
through to protect his daughter alongside
the religious and political persecution of
a nation caught in a civil war. Besides this
there is a love interest, jealousy and all the
ingredients of a page turner.
The personalities are well defined and the
reader develops likes and dislikes of each
character, however the most endearing
character is Sophie who is brave, strong and
shows and undying belief that her Daddy will
always be there for her.
RECYCLING PROGRAM
IN ZIMBALI
by Sue Beningfield
Dear Residents,
Please collect your initial clear bags, or if you
need more than 1 bag a week, free of charge,
from ZEMA’s reception. Once you’ve filled it,
place it out on the verge in a wheeli-bin by 8am
on Wednesday mornings and you will receive a
replacement bag. Please contact Sue Beningfield
on beningfield@telkomsa.net or Operations at
ZEMA on 032-5384300 or visit ZEMA’s website
http://www.zema.co.za/conservation/recyclingprogram
if you should have any waste queries.
TYPES OF PLASTICS
We are now able to put all types of
uncontaminated and clean plastic in our clear
bags. That means no food contaminated
plastics or wash& dry them before placing them
in the bag.
PET - POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE:
PET is used for soft drinks, bottled water and a
wide variety of food products are packaged in it.
PET is recycled into …. Hollow-fibre filling for
jackets, duvets, pillows and sleeping bags is the
main use for clear PET bottles in South Africa.
Green bottles are turned into building insulation
(Isotherm); PET is also recycled in geotextiles
for road stabilisation and dam linings, and
Plastiwood.
HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE:
You’ll find this logo on milk bottles, cleaning
products, cosmetics and toiletries, crates and
motor oils, among others. HDPE is recycled
into …. Recycling bins, compost bins, buckets,
detergent containers, posts, fencing, pipes,
plastic timber and plastic chairs.
POLYVINYL CHLORIDE:
PVC has been described as a “difficult” plastic.
Its use is being phased out – in many cases it
is being replaced by PET. Try to avoid buying
products with PVC packaging, but if you can’t
avoid it, it is unlikely to be recycled so the
Plastics Federation of SA’s advice is to just
throw it away with ordinary rubbish.
LOW-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE:
Number 4 plastic is used to make rubbish
bags, frozen veggie bags, building film, some
squeezable bottles and cosmetic tubs. LDPE
is recycled into …. Bin liners, pallet sheets,
irrigation piping, a variety of containers, and
construction and building film.
POLYPROPYLENE:
This type of plastic is used in bottles, ice cream
tubs, straws, microwave dishes, kettles, garden
furniture, lunch boxes, packaging tape and
bottle caps. PP is recycled into …. Pegs, bins,
pipes, pallet sheets, oil funnels, car battery
cases and trays.
POLYSTYRENE:
There are two kinds of polystyrene: highimpact,
from which products like coat hangers
and yoghurt cups are made, and expanded
polystyrene, from which meat and vegetable
trays are made. PS is recycled into …. Picture
frames, curtain rails, finials, skirting boards,
cornices, stationery e.g., rulers, seedling trays,
coat hangers. Demand far outstrips supply in
South Africa.
Happy Recycling!
John Winton, who has arguably the most
experience in the intricacies that are involved
in managing and maintaining a positive club
culture.
April has been a busy month for our
golfing members, with the golf section
AGM, Captains Dinner and the annual Club
Championships taking place. We hosted our
first Trivia Quiz evening for the year, which
was again very well supported, along with 4
weddings in the Crowned Eagle. Our quiet
little club has been buzzing and I would like
to thank the staff for their commitment and
dedication over this busy period.
The Captains Dinner was great fun and I
would like to congratulate Paul Botha and
Gesi Graham on their nominations to fulfill
the respective Captains role for the next
year. John Winton has been appointed as the
Chairman of the Golf Committee and I look
forward to working with the committee for
the duration of the year. Two new committee
members have also been appointed in Vimul
Valabjee and Alex Loizides, who will provide
a great deal of experience in their respective
nominated portfolios. I would also like to
recognize the immense contribution made
by the outgoing Chairman, Neill Edwards,
for his support and guidance over the past 4
years, as his knowledge and understanding
of the dynamics of the Club have been very
necessary in ensuring that the committee
focuses on the matters relevant to the golf
section. Neill’s input will be missed by all
the management and staff, yet we are very
excited to have the opportunity to work with
The Club Championships, sponsored by
Seeff, heralded two new Champions for 2016.
Shane Douglas and Sharon Griffiths are your
two Club Champions, with the B division
winners Prinesh Singh and Debbie van Helt
and C division honours going to Chris Lee
and Barbara Winterbach. I mentioned at the
prize giving that it was the 3rd consecutive
year that Seeff had participated as the title
sponsor and their involvement over the
weekend was immense. We will be getting
some wonderful video footage that will be
forwarded to all the participants and the effort
that the entire Seeff team went to needs to be
commended. Other very important partners
for the weekend were Global Golf, our loyal
pro shop operator, Fitch and Leedes that
provided much needed refreshments on
day 1, as well as Cornel Van Loggerenberg
who donated two wonderful vouchers for
personal Golfit training at the BBC gym. On
behalf of the entire golfing section at Zimbali
Country Club, we extend our gratitude to
these sponsors.
The field for this year’s championship was
the largest that we have had to accommodate
in the short history of the club. 77 men and
27 ladies started the event, and although
there were a few casualties after day 1, we
were still able to complete the weekend very
successfully. The longest time that it took
for any group to play was 4 hours and 35
minutes, with the leading 3 ball on Sunday
afternoon completing the round in 4 hours
and 20 minutes. This is exceptional and
I would like to add that the necessity to
introduce a split morning and afternoon
46

field ensured that this sort of timing was
possible. There were a couple of grumbles
that splitting the men and ladies into two
separate fields spoilt a bit of the “gees”,
but from an organization perspective it was
the only solution due to the numbers. The
golf experience is paramount during this
important event and the smooth flow on
and off the course was far superior to any
event that we have previously held. There will
need to be some strong persuasion for us to
change this formula, with the only addition
that we will probably consider would be the
introduction of a senior division.
The long weekend at the end of the month
will again be a busy period for us and we look
forward to seeing you around the club.
PGA PRO Tip of the month
How to fix a
Slice
I see this mistake all the time: Slicers come to
a hole with trouble on the right (like our 6th
hole for right handers) and tee up in the middle
of the tee box. Thirty seconds later they’re
watching the ball peel off into the junk. The
problem is, they’re setting up to hit a straight
drive, looking down the middle of the fairway,
instead of playing for a left-to-right shot.
If you fight a slice, tee your ball on the far right
side, next to the right tee marker. That gets
your eyes looking down the left side of the
hole. Looking straight brings all that trouble
into view, which basically draws you to it. You
need to start your ball to the left, so get your
eyes tracking that way from the beginning.
After you tee up on the right, go behind the ball
and pick a target on the left that allows for your
normal shot. Then step in and put the clubhead
behind the ball, aiming the face at that target.
Set your feet and body lines at a right angle to
the clubface. Now you’re in a square setup, just
shifted 20 or 30 yards to the left. From there,
swing where you’re aimed. Fairway!
FROM THE CAPTAIN ...
Exerpt from Captains Speech at the
Captain’s Dinner 2016.
Steven has already said a lot of thank you’s
but on behalf of the member’s here at Zimbali
I would like to extend my thanks to all the staff
and Contractors here at Zimbali. It is these
guys who make us happy to be here and the
leadership that Steven provides ensures that
we have lots of happiness. Some of us too
much happiness at times but we send those
ones home to their wives.
When I visit other Clubs, I always match the
comparative offerings. I must say our staff does
a wonderful job here. They all seem to have a
happy disposition and remember everybody’s
names so well. The touch of welcoming you
back into the pub by name after golf makes you
feel so welcome. Your preferred drink is just
brought to you before you have to ask. We are
truly fortunate to have them here to serve us.
We all thank you.
Anybody who has been on a committee will tell
you that it is impossible to get it right all of the
time but I think as a Management / Committee
working team we certainly have made a
difference this past year.
This was my theme as incoming Captain
“Making A Difference” and will continue to be
in the upcoming year. Our constitution requires
the Captain to be voted in by the Committee
after their selection at the AGM. So it is not a
done deal that you will be Captain again until
the votes have been cast. If you have served
one of the two years and the committee do
not like you, you may be out. Thankfully this
was either not the case or nobody else on
committee wanted the hot seat. So you have
me for another year.
I must say I have really enjoyed my time as
Captain this past 12 months and the committee,
led by Neill Edwards as our Chairman, have been
incredibly supportive of me. If you attended the
AGM this morning, you will be aware that Neill
has stepped down from the Golf Committee.
Neill spends a lot of his time at Leopard Creek
where he has a house and he dutifully returned
to Zimbali to take care of matters here as and
when required. As I have said before, most of
the people at Zimbali are retired and the same
is true of the Committee. We all juggle our
personal time with our responsibilities at the
Club. Neill did that well.
It is common knowledge that if you play a
round of golf with Neill that you will neither
get home early nor sober. This has commonly
become known as being Edwardised.
I would like to ask Neill to come up to the
podium and to accept a small gift from the
Members thanking him for all his time he has
dedicated to the Club over the past 6 years or
so, that he has served us
The Lady’s Captain has already been announced
and I welcome the chance to work alongside
Gesi Graham who will have Annece Winton as
her Vice-Captain. The Lady’s Captain currently
only serves for one year. June Allan officially
hands over tonight and did a great job during
her year and I thank her for all her help whilst
we were together. She was a marvellous help.
Thank you June.
Your committee for next year will be:
Led by John Winton (Chairman)
54

Myself (Captain)
Malcolm Fick (Vice-Captain)
Graeme Winterbach, John Allan, Tony Pitham,
Holger Peens, Vimul Valabjee, Alex Loizides,
Gesi Graham (Lady Captain) and Annece
Winton (Lady Vice-Captain).
It is always easy to sit on the fringes and
to criticise what is being done but it takes
a big person to stand up and be counted
and to improve things for all, without any
remuneration. I think they deserve a huge
round of applause.
I would like to thank them all for their
willingness to stand for committee and to give
of their personal time to make this course what
it is and better still. We have lots of work ahead
of us this coming year.
Yes committee work can be frustrating as it
all seems to take such a long time. The more
people there are the more view-points. If I look
back however we have made lots of progress
this past year.
To highlight certain aspects, some of which
came up at the AGM earlier today:
• We held a terrific Men’s Invitational Golf Day
where Members got to show off their course
to their friends and colleagues. I regularly have
members asking what the date is for this year
which is the 21st September for your diaries.
We will do even better this year.
• The Men decided that the Ladies could not
have all the glory with their very successful
Open days. Ladies you set the bar high for us.
• We saw what the “bunker committee” did
by uplifting all of the bunkers on the course
and improving the design and drainage. Huge
changes were made on some holes like the
12th, 13th and the 17th. The 17th was washed
onto the 16th and after the repair the 17th,
which our Insurers mostly covered, turned out
better.
• We have commenced some remedial work
on the 15th but this is the next big hole to
improve. DWAF has slowed our plans down
but this will be overcome and eventually we will
finish off this hole.
• This upcoming year will see our Landscaping
Team do more of the work like they have done
on 1, 2, 10 and 11. We see it in our own
gardens how the trees and plants need to be
trimmed and cut back or they will just close in
over you. We need to maintain the character of
the course and allow the golfer the views of the
holes they are about to play. I think the work
we have already done helped us improve our
rating that Golf Digest gave us this year. Whilst
this is not the only criteria for improvement, it
is important for the wellbeing of the Estate that
we remain a top rated and quality golf course
and in demand by both golfers and investors
alike. All your opinions are welcome and any
suggestions you make will be taken seriously,
as it is your Club and Golf Course.
• Whilst we are talking Club it seems as though
we will commence with major changes to the
Cub House in the not too distant future. This is
an area I am impatient to get going with and the
whole Cloud Berry saga is frustrating us all I am
sure. You all presumably got the latest update
from Richard Bryant on the current status
as well as Syd Kelly’s summary at the AGM.
Hopefully ZEMA will get this right soon and
with their support the funds will be available,
for us to make this a facility we can again be
proud of, setting a new bench mark for Club
facilities. The working committee under Steve’s
guidance will do the right thing for us. Mike
Hellen, who is here tonight, is passionate about
improving the facility and he is making all the
right noises and doing the tough negotiations
for us at the ZEMA level.
• The Members fund is in a healthy state and
is used to fund competitions and other items in
support of all members. This fund is overseen
by the Vice-Captain Malcolm Fick who assures
me everything is securely held.
I thank you for entrusting me with the task of
being your Captain and I will honour you by
doing my best.
