Q – Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you are currently working on?
A - My name is Isaac Wilkinson, I am currently a film student at Manchester
Metropolitan University. I film professional skateboarders, I’ve travelled all around
the world doing so, most recently was to Barcelona, the skate Mecca. I have
worked with a lot of skate companies to produce videos for them. However, I work
mainly for Black Sheep Store in Manchester. I am working on a full-length skate
video at the moment. As a skate filmer, it means a lot to myself to be working on
a full length. It’s more of a rite of passage, every filmer in the industry has done
one so working on my own at the moment means a lot to me.
Q – What were some of the details that stood out during the process?
A - Well I am still working on it, and it’s a lot of hard work,
I’ve chosen 8 people to have full sections in the video, each section will be
between 3-5 minutes long and collecting footage takes a long time.
You need a lot of patience when it comes to filming skateboarders
as it takes a while to get tricks. Some skaters get the tricks done quite quickly,
however sometimes it takes hours to get a trick and that’s where you need the
patience. When the skater is throwing their board around and shouting at a
ledge or handrail you really need to give them the encouragement otherwise
they won’t do it.
Q – What’s one art/trend you applaud and why? (i)
A - I’m very into constructivism recently as it’s based on observation and scientific study.
I like science however I was never very good at it during high school.
Space and anything to do with planets and the universe is super cool.
Q – What’s one art/trend you don’t applaud and why? (ii)
A - Music videos it’s not so much an art trend however I’m not a big fan of music video,
I feel like they’re are too basic and easy to make, and when it comes to a making a film
you really need to think about what you’re shooting. When it comes to a music video,
if you’ve got the money you can literally do anything.
“When it comes to making these videos it takes a lot of time and patience to
film, a lot of the time is spent saying to the skater ‘come on, you’ve got it
next go’, and a lot of the time their reply is just ‘one more go, I’ve got it’.”
