Research<br />

The history of the Asthma Foundation WA is steeped in funding research to find a better treatment and cure for<br />

asthma and related conditions to help us achieve our vision - To free West Australians from the burden of asthma.<br />

The spirit of research innovation continues with the Foundation committed in providing researchers with grants in the<br />

following categories for <strong>2013</strong>/14:<br />

— New Investigator Grants – aims to assist asthma researchers at the start of their career to<br />

secure their first major element of research funding.<br />

— Project Research Grants – these are traditional project grants aimed primarily at proven<br />

researchers in establishing new asthma projects and continuing programs of research.<br />

— Fiona Staniforth PhD Scholarship Top Up – supports students undertaking postgraduate doctorate<br />

degrees who hold or have been approved for a full-time PhD Scholarship to assist in their studies for<br />

a maximum of three years.<br />

— Fiona Staniforth Honours Scholarship – for the first time in <strong>2014</strong> the Asthma Foundation WA<br />

has established scholarships to students working on their Honours to help attract the best and brightest<br />

of the next generation of researchers to asthma research.<br />

— Vi Watson Vacation Scholarship – this scholarship provides students undertaking research<br />

projects relevant to asthma. It provides students with the financial support required to continue<br />

their research over the summer break.<br />

The Asthma Foundation WA Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee (MASAC) chaired by Professor Graham Hall<br />

advises, makes recommendations and provides information to the Board of the Asthma Foundation WA on various<br />

respiratory research matters.<br />

The Foundation is appreciative of fellow MASAC members Professor Alan James, Professor Peter Henry, Dr Phil<br />

Stumbles, Dr Anthony Kicic and Professor Mark Everard for their expertise in the selection process for the grants.<br />
