Research Evening
The grants were presented to the successful applicants at the AFWA Awards night at the Telethon Institute for
Child Health Research during National Asthma Week in September 2013. Awards were presented by Foundation
President, Mr Cathal Smith. Special guest speaker Associate Professor Graeme Zosky presented on some of the
findings of his research projects the Foundation funded in the past few years.
The Fiona Staniforth Research Awards
The Fiona Staniforth Research Awards were created in 2014 to commemorate and honour the life of Miss Fiona
Staniforth, who passed away in 2013. The Fiona Staniforth Research Awards are given to young researchers as
PhD and Honours Scholarships to encourage them into asthma research.
The Fiona Staniforth Research Awards would not be possible without the support of the Staniforth family, the
donations made in memory of Fiona and the fundraising efforts of the Coglioni Cycling Club as part of the
Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma.
Acknowledgements
The Board and staff thank the Channel 7 Telethon Trust for its financial
support towards the Asthma Foundation WA’s research grants.
The Board would also like to thank the Asthma Foundation WA staff,
David Johnson, CEO and Yolanda Arcaro, Research Grants Officer, for their

World Asthma Day Symposium
The Asthma Foundation WA held a Health Symposium on World Asthma
Day, Tuesday 6 May at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre. The theme of
the Symposium was “Future Directions in Asthma Management and Care –
why asthma remains a National Health Priority” and attracted 110 delegates
from all areas of the Healthcare sector, including GPs, Pharmacists, nurses
and respiratory researchers.
The day was made possible thanks to the support of Asthma Australia through
major sponsor AstraZeneca and other event sponsors, Bird Healthcare and
Novartis Pharmaceuticals.
Key speakers included Professor Helen Reddell, Dr Nathan Barlett from the
United Kingdom, Professor Alan James, Professor Mark Everard, Professor
Graham Hall and Associate Professor Sunalene Devadason.
The Symposium provided the Asthma Foundation WA the opportunity to
present the Vi Watson Vacation Scholarship and inaugural Fiona Staniforth
Research Awards.
