how it all began
The Sublimity Harvest Festival began in 1973 with the first
tractor pull. The Sublimity Harvest Festival started out as a
competition between local farmers, to see whose tractor could
pull the most dead weight the farthest.
It all began by using a sled hooked to the back of a tractor.
Farmers and spectators lined the sides of the track, as the sled
was pulled down the track, they would jump on and add weight
until the tractor could not pull any further. The distance was
measured by using a hand held tape.
This friendly competition that began on a Sunday afternoon, in
an open field, 40 years ago, has now become the Grand Finalé
of each year.
The 2012 Sublimity Harvest Festival Committee Officers (LEFT TO RIGHT): BJ Tuttle, Becky Silbernagel, April Urquhart, and Daniel Urquhart.
Look who’s turning 40 and pulling strong! Welcome to the
Sublimity Harvest Festival and thank you for coming out to
celebrate with us.
Looking at the festival today, many people may
not realize it began as a competition between
farmers in a field trying to see whose tractors
could pull the farthest.
Now in its 40th year it has become a
community-backed event requiring hundreds of
volunteers putting in thousands of man-hours
to make it into the award-winning event you see
today.
I believe one of the most rewarding parts of
putting on a great show year after year are the
memories we have helped create over several
generations. For that I want to thank all the participants, both local
and from across the United States, who pull and put on an exciting
show. Some of my favorite memories from the festival have been
watching our talented drivers behind the wheel of trucks such as
Super Pete, Bounty Hunter, and Stormin’ Norman in Barefoot.
Enough cannot be said of our sponsors, from the ones who
have been with us from the beginning to our newest supporters.
This event would not be possible without their dedicated support.
Because of that support the Sublimity Harvest Foundation, as
a non-profit, is able to give back to causes benefiting the local
community.
To all of our volunteers, committee heads and members, from
those who work year-round to those who help over the festival
weekend to ensure a smooth event, I want to say thank you. Your
hard work and dedication, whether on the track, in a booth or at
the gate, is more than appreciated. You should
all be proud of the festival you help put on each
year.
Of course all of this work
and dedication would
be for nothing if not
for our wonderful
patrons. Your
continued
support of
the Sublimity
Harvest
Festival has
helped to make it the amazing show
you see today. My hope is that you
continue to make memories with us for
another 40 years to come, whether with your
family and friends, the new people you meet while you’re here or
with that special someone.
I hope everyone here enjoys the show and here’s to another
40 years of growing while staying true to the traditions and vision
passed down to us by the founding members.
Thank you again and enjoy.
How long have you been coming to the Sublimity Harvest
Festival? If you’ve attended since the first event back in
1973, then you know what a long way we’ve come! If this is
your first time, we are so glad you’re here to celebrate this
momentous occasion with the dedicated regulars. Most people
have a story associated with the first time they attended Festival.
Maybe you became hooked on the thrill of the show, or something
wild happened on the track, or even something memorable in
the entertainment tent! Whatever your story is, hold on to that
memory, because we have many, many exciting years ahead of
us.
You have surely noticed that
the Festival is rich in cultural
2012 board of Directors heritage—a community of
devotees was established,
Noel Kuzma, CFO
it grows each year and
Directors: Daniel Urquhart, that revolve around
the enthusiastic fans who
storm the gates each year.
They come to see exciting
competitions that stir up dust,
generate excitement and create conversation. Some families
make a weekend of it, staying overnight in the RV camping area,
while others choose to attend their favorite day.
This year, Friday is opening night and it features the new “Pit
Party” where you can see the trucks and tractors up close and
meet the drivers. Saturday has the Fun Run, the parade and
it’s the day when the monster trucks crush the school bus! Or
perhaps you enjoy Sunday, known for years as “family day” and
most recently “cause day” where we’ve added non-profit vendors
inside the Festival grounds.
While we delight in the thrill of the weekend, the after-Festival
buzz continues year ‘round until the following September when
we get all geared up again. Did you know that throughout the
year, the Festival board gives back an average of $15,000 a
year in donations to local clubs and organizations? The Festival is
strong due in part to the organization’s unwavering commitment
to supporting the local community. We are founded with the
belief that giving back makes you stronger.
the best of yourself.”
Garage Band Blues started several
years ago as a standard, old fashioned,
Blues-and-nothing-but-the-Blues band.
But after working with and teaming up
with musicians from rock and country
backgrounds, we evolved into one of
Salem’s favorite all-around cover bands.
Lead singer Nick Wixom packs a soulful and
powerful Southern Gospel style into every song.
Lead guitar player Brandon Logan lets loose with amazing Blues
riffs and adds the flavor that no band should ever be without.
Backup guitar player Aaron Parsons gives the Country music that
much needed “twang” and adds the juicy grooves that you can’t
find anywhere else in town. Big Mike Link lays down the bottom
end on bass so you not only hear the music but you feel it too!
Rounding out the group is the Brian Wixom sitting back behind
the skins with the fancy rhythms and the incredible harmonies.
With such a stellar cast it is easy to see each member having a
good time and engaging the crowd!
Whether playing in front of 100 guests at the favorite
watering hole, 50 friends at your backyard BBQ, or thousands
of people at the annual festivals, Garage Band Blues is a safe bet
on a good time!
SUNDAY TO-DO
hiStory of the annual fun run
the yearly run is a healthful harvest
festival favorite
The Sublimity Fun Run started in 1979 and was part of the
original runner craze. It grew to almost 200 participants
by 1984 as the popularity of running grew. The first one was
manned mostly by students from Regis High School’s cross
country team and Stayton Road Runners as a way to promote
running and physical fitness in the community. The popularity
of running and walking still continues as this will mark the fun
run’s 34th year. Mike Bauer, a coach and counselor at Regis
High School and a Road Runner himself, has played an important
role in the implementation of the Sublimity Fun Run. Mr. Bauer’s
family, mostly from Eugene, is also involved in such things as
making the awards, his brother Pat used to design t-shirts for
Participants in the 2011 SHF Fun Run get pumped up for the race.
the race, and his nieces and nephews and now grand nieces and
nephew help hand out awards. It has become a great excuse
for Mr. Bauer’s family to hold a family reunion after the event. In
recent times the Sublimity Harvest Festival has taken an active
role in the event, Bob Hartmann has taken over the design of
the t shirt with a theme portrayed from the community. The
Sublimity School PTA is the beneficiary of some of the proceeds
and many of their students and teachers are involved. It is as
popular as ever with almost 200 participants last year. This
year’s fun run and walk will take place Saturda, September 8th
at 9 a.m. at Sublimity Grade School. Please visit our website at
The Once A Month Band started five years ago when a group
band members played music together over 40 years ago in high
school and in church groups.
The OAMB enjoys many musical genres and performs
an ecletic mix of country, rock, pop, and bluegrass. “Our
illusionist Keene brings magic to the festival
Hart Keene has been performing his unique blend of magic,
mentalism, and comedy all over the Northwest for over 12
years. He began his interest in magic at the age of 15 where
he focused mostly on “close-up”, sleight-of-hand magic.
This helped pave the way to long term bookings in
upscale restaurants where he would entertain
patrons at their tables. Because of this background
Hart believes in interacting with his audience which
is why he brings an intimate style to his stage shows
and larger presentations. Whether he is performing for
a group of 3 or 300, his audience feels like they are a part of
the show, not merely spectators.
Because of his versatility, Hart is a popular choice for
entertainment. He is just as comfortable mixing and mingling
with his audience in a cocktail situation as he is on stage. Hart
has performed for hundreds of companies all over the Northwest
including IBM, Costco, Royal Caribbean, University of Oregon,
Intel, and many more. Hart has also performed and headlined at
both The Mill Casino in Coosbay, OR as well as 3 Rivers Casino
in Florence, OR.
In 2010, Hart was featured on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent!”
Hart is based in Eugene, OR, and makes his living performing
at corporate events, upscale private functions, and a few select
restaurants around Oregon.
PROUD TO SUPPORT THE 40 TH ANNUAL SUBLIMITY HARVEST FESTIVAL, A TRADITION OF OUR HOME AND YOURS
18 2012 Sublimity harveSt feStival
Non-profit organizations from around the state will come
together for the second annual “Cause Day” hosted by
the Sublimity Harvest Festival on Sunday, September 9. The
special event is open to a variety of causes. This display is
nicknamed “Non-profit row,” and these organizations will share
their messages as part of an overall awareness promotion.
Last year, during the first inaugural Cause Day, Festival goers
donated over 350 pounds of food for the Marion-Polk Food
Share.
On September 7 through 9, the Festival celebrates 40 years
of tractor pulls, truck pulls, and monster-truck madness that
attracts an audience of more than 20,000 guests each year.
“This year, the Festival membership felt it was important
to recognize various social causes, be it cancer awareness
or striking out hunger,” explained Festival President BJ Tuttle.
“Our members tend to be deeply involved in different causes,
and we thought this would provide an opportunity for them to
share their interests.”
As a part of Cause Day, the Marion-Polk Food Share will be
collecting cans of food. Guests who bring two cans of food will
not only be helping one of many worthy causes, but will also
receive $2 off their Sunday general-admission ticket.

Diane f. nelSon ''mommafay'' nye
STAYTON, ORE. – Diane “Mommafay” Nye of AWI Diesel Truck
Repair was an avid supporter of the Sublimity Harvest Festival and
a devoted community member. On July 2, 2012 this loving wife,
faithful Momma and special friend to so many, claimed victory over
cancer by receiving her angel wings at the age of 61. She battled
breast cancer since 2000.
“Her unwavering faith in God and the will to be here for her
children, grandchildren, and her husband has been an inspiration
to so many. Our family finds peace knowing that she is dancing
with Jesus and no longer in pain. She has provided hope for so
many. We are ever thankful and honored to have had her in our
life!” says Diane’s daughter Sara Nye.
Diane was born in Aberdeen, S.D. to parents Edna and Donald
Nelson. She ultimately ended up residing in San Diego, California
where she met, and very quickly fell for the man of her dreams, the
love of her life, and her best friend JR Nye. They shared an intense
and deep rooted love from that moment. They officially joined their
two hearts with a promise of unconditional love and commitment
to one another on July 15th, 1978. Together from this love for
each other they created an extremely close-knit family of 8, lovingly
known as “The Nyes” They raised their six children on large doses
of love and values, which Diane instilled in each of them.
Their home was built on this very love and togetherness that
was so important to both of them. One of these values is the
importance of family. A near weekly tradition at the Nye house
is “Family Night” for which her loving children have awarded her
“Mom of a Lifetime.”
Diane is preceded in death by her father Donald Nelson; mother
Edna Wiseman; sister Phyllis Phyle; and brothers Tony Jacobson
and Ronald “Ronnie” Nelson. She survived by her husband JR;
daughter Sara (Kary); son Joshua (Melissa); son Gabriel (Nicole);
daughter Christiana; son Noah (Courtney); daughter Danielle,
daughter Julie Shafer, granddaughter Annabelle Diane; and sister
Opal Marangon (Rudy). Donations in her honor are being accepted
at Youth Missions at Morningstar Community Church in Salem,
Ore.
The Sublimity Harvest Festival is grateful to have had the love
and support of Diane Nye for so many years. As a loyal monster
truck sponsor, Diane was the ultimate Festival fan, never missing
a moment, reveling in the truck and tractor excitement and
expressing great enthusiasm year ‘round. Her love of life and
devotion to community will always serve as an example to us of
the difference we can make in this world.
Love and angel hugs to the Nye family.
