He is also very social, and likes to hang out with his people. He is affectionate, loves attention and being brushed. Byron keeps tabs on all the action-- he will park himself wherever he can monitor the hustle and bustle going on in the house. Bryon is estimated to be around 5 ½ years of age and his affectionate and easy-going personality makes him a great candidate for a family. We are not sure how Byron ended up injured and wandering the streets but he was a sad sight when he was rescued. Byrons’ wounds had become infected and he has since been nursed back to health. This handsome boy has adjusted quickly to being an indoor cat- a good indication that he was once a family pet. Please consider Byron for your forever pet. You can meet Byron at the Petco Adoption Center in Norwood! Meet Goldie: Goldie is a great descriptive name for this wonderfully colored, orange tiger kitty. Sadly, Goldie’s human mom passed away and the family was unable to take him in. One of our volunteers was in the right place at the right time to welcome him to or community of cats seeking new homes. He is a bit distraught living in a strange place without all the luxuries of a home but is coming along just fine. His human mom was in a wheelchair so we are assuming her ability to pick him up and hold him a lot was not the norm for him. We are always seeking volunteer foster care, fundraiser enthusiasts, and currently taking letters of interest from qualified applicants for Board Member positions. Lyme Disease Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria, Borrellia Borgdorferi, transmitted by the Deer tick. This a preventable disease if your beloved pet is given appropriate preventatives on a regular basis. The disease is also very easily detected with a simple blood test. In most cases this is the same blood test used to analyze for heartworm so it’s something all pet owners should take care of annually for their dogs. The preventative is cheap compared to the treatment and risks after the disease is contracted. Common clinical signs of this disease are high fever, lameness, joint swelling and lethargy. See your veterinarian and be proactive to protect your dog! As you may or may not know, this is a disease humans can also contract from the Deer tick. Be diligent about checking your pet, yourself, and your children after outdoor play especially if you are in tall grass or wooded areas. Use veterinarian recommended flea and tick products to prevent this disease from affecting your dog. Heartworm Disease Heart worm disease (Dirofilaria Immitis) is serious and can be fatal whether treated or not. Though most common in dogs, cats can also contract the disease. Treatment is expensive and risky in dogs and there is not treatment for our feline friends. Screening your pets annual with a simple blood test to detect this disease is most important. Prevention is the key in regards to this disease. The cost to prevent it far outweighs the cost to treat it in your pet dog and it can be a death sentence to your cat. The mosquito is the culprit spreading the disease from one infected animal to another animal. The worms live in the blood and tissues and migrate to the heart and organs over a period of months. Clinical signs in dogs may include; exercise intolerance, coughing and heart failure. Signs in cats are much more dramatic; sneezing/coughing, collapse and sudden death.
