NORWOOD Beautifully Serving the Community for 20 Years By Donna Lane 2016 marks the 20 year anniversary of the Norwood Evening Garden Club and during those two decades, those members have been busy beautifying Norwood. The club has sponsored many educational programs and made them accessible to the community. They have also put on a flower show, a garden tour, a town-wide earth day celebration, and 12 Art in Bloom exhibitions. They plant and maintain a vegetable garden at Adams Farm in Walpole, and donate the produce to the Norwood and Walpole food pantries. They design and maintain the plantings around the F. Holland Day House and have donated and installed a number of plants at the George H. Morse House. With all that they have done and continue to do, their most visible contribution to the Town of Norwood is the adoption, planting and maintenance of several spots in town as part of their civic beautification efforts. In 1998, the group adopted the two islands at Guild Square. Then club-president Lynn Riley, who was also a member of the Norwood Flower Committee, accepted the challenge of Town Manager, John Carroll, on behalf of the fledgling club. The new, embedded cement planters presented a significant design challenge for yours truly. The area required fairly shallow-rooted plants that could take the abuse of salting roads in wintertime. After 18 years, the plantings have stood the test of time, with only a couple of casualties in the smaller bed, and a severe but judicious pruning of the specimen Japanese maple. Again at the request of Carroll, the Club adopted “The Round” in the center of town (at the intersection of Vernon and Washington Streets) shortly after completion of Guild Square. It was even more challenging! Not only is the embedded round sidewalk planter only 12 inches deep, half of it is located in the sun, while the other half sits in the shade. After a few tentative plantings, the Club decided to make this a combination planting of annuals and perennials each year. In 2005, Carroll again turned to the club to “do something” with the corner of Washington and Cottage Streets in the town square. (Are you sensing a pattern here?) After pulling up acres of catbrier, a thorny vine of ill-repute, the sunny corners were finally clean enough to plant. As I write this, the fothergilla planted on that day is bursting with blooms, enhancing that area beyond what was originally imagined. Have you noticed Hawes Pool Park lately? Set off from the Town pool by an unattractive chain-link fence, the long, narrow property is one of the most visible in South Norwood. Despite the Town’s regular cleanups, this area was more often than not an eyesore, with trash strewn by passers-by. Judith Howard, a member of the South Norwood Business Committee, asked if we would adopt this area. There were several hurdles the Club needed to overcome before adopting the project: they had no money, there was no water at the site, and they needed Town approval since it is Town-owned land. The Club applied for a grant from the Andrew Boch Betterment Fund in 1999. An award was not forthcoming, but they were urged to re-submit their request the following year. In 2001, the Club was awarded $2000 for the project and set to work. The objective was to have a self-sustaining garden that would mitigate the extremely long expanse and the unsightly chainlink fence; make the planting look as though it flowed into the park and was integral to it; and provide diverse color and texture of plantings so the area was interesting and colorful at least three seasons of the year. The Norwood Evening Garden Club would be the stewards of this piece of property for the Town. The Town, in turn, would provide the Club with a means to water, the manual labor which was beyond the Club members’ GARDEN continued on page 5

A master plan was developed calling for implementation over a four-year period, working with the Norwood Public Works Department. The project was started in 2001 and completed in 2005. In 2006, the Club won a Civic Development Award from the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts for their work on this project. In 2002, the Club was forced to remove and replace plants that were damaged by a sidewalk plow and an unusually high use of salt by road crews. And two years after completion, more plants had to be replaced because a car ran off the road, plowing down a newly planted tree and several shrubs. In 2015, everyone held their collective breath as talks of an ice rink continued, suggesting the very real possibility that the garden would have to be moved. The garden will remain where it is. But, after 15 years some of the original plants have outgrown their space, so the Club is now reassessing the plantings and making plans to replace the underachieving specimens. Each year, members of the garden club roll up their sleeves to weed, prune, dig and plant at all of these sites, as well as at the entrance to Bird Park. The Club calls this civic beautification project “The Washington Street Corridor.” The Club is proud of the work it has accomplished and acknowledges that it could not do all that it does without the support of the Town. Together they are trusted partners in helping to make Norwood the beautiful town that it is.
