From there, the department moved to the second floor of the 1907 firehouse, now the home of Olde Colonial Cafe. In 1928, the station found a more permanent home. “The department was located at the bottom floor of the town hall from 1928 to 1964, Murphy said. "In 1964, the town opened a brand new combined police and fire station on Nahatan Street. It was built on land seized by the town for unpaid taxes. Dunn's Pond was on the property and there were constant flooding problems over the years. In 1998, a 'hundred year' storm flooded the bottom floor to a point of four and a half feet. In 2001, the building was demolished and a new facility was erected on the same property but a little to the east and south of the previous building. Plus it was built on a slab (no basement). That building was occupied in July, of 2003. It’s not only the location of the department that has changed, but also the call volume, as well as the nature of calls. According to Officer Kevin Grasso, many call records were destroyed in floods prior to the department moving to the new public safety building, but he did note there has been a continuous increase over recent years. “In 2014, we had 17,450 calls for service, and in 2015 we had 17,936 calls,” Grasso said. “I do have access to calls for service back to early 2000s. [In] 2001, [there were] 15,164 calls for service, and in 2006, [there were] 16,230 calls.” The increase in call volume mirrors an increase in population. Records indicate the population of Norwood in the late 1800s was around 5,000, whereas today the town holds more than 30,000 residents. According to Murphy, the department has responded to the changes accordingly. “Generally, policing responds to the changes demanded by the public,” Murphy said. “Whether it is [drunken] driving, domestic abuse, drug abuse, fraud [or] computer crimes, we often are at the forefront of the effort.
