Gardening Stuff of dreams: the Mediterranean garden at Inner Temple. As we near summer, will our garden dreams come true, asks Izi Glover Whether your plants are in pots or borders, windowsills or flower beds, hopefully they are providing summer delight and distraction. But it’s always good to see what other gardeners have imagined, so to help take our gardening to the next level visiting a top garden is hard to beat. Luckily, one of the best garden sourcebooks is a short ride away at Inner Temple Gardens, where head gardener Andrea Brunsendorf has introduced some pretty exceptional planting. Let’s take a wander round. The main gates on Crown Office Row open between the High Borders, which are a double masterclass in summer colour and early autumn va-va voom. These borders are south facing and bake in the sun, so dahlias, salvias, rudbeckias, persicarias 30 LOVEEAST and miscanthus combine in eyepopping fashion. Amongst their number you will find rarities including tree dahlias, aralia and amicei. Opposite, steps lead down between the Mediterranean borders with high grasses, teasels, and verbascum towering above cistus and bupleurum below. Walking down towards the embankment, yew buttresses flank more traditional bedding plant schemes of verbenas and zinnias, interspersed with eucalyptus and grasses. Linger around the corner in the shadier peony garden. Here you will find inspiration for shadier patches. Majestic peonies reign over euphorbias, brunneras and hesperis, with foxgloves and thalictrum massing ranks behind. A superb wisteria wends its way through the railings above. Finally the epilogue – a wonderful and ever-changing pot display at the bottom of King Henry’s Walk. Take a picnic and enjoy a fellow gardener’s midsummer dream!
