Movies On Main
RETURNS
With Four Movies In 2016
The Riverside Downtown Partnership in conjunction with the City’s Park, Recreation and
Community Services Department is pleased to announce the return of “Movies on Main” with
blockbuster G-rated and PG movies the entire family will enjoy. These free movies will be shown on
Main Street between University and Mission Inn Avenue projected on an inflatable outdoor screen.
Scheduled movies this summer include:
JULY 7 – HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2
Hotel owner Dracula is concerned that his
half-human grandson Dennis isn’t embracing his
vampire heritage. He and his fellow ghouls put
Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot
camp, but their efforts are complicated by the
arrival of Dracula’s dad, a traditionalist vampire
named Vlad.
JULY 14 – MINIONS
The Minions, Stuart, Kevin and Bob, discover a
hidden commercial broadcast for villains advertising
Villain-Con; a convention for villains and
supervillains in Orlando. At the convention, they
are recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain
who, alongside her inventor husband Herb,
hatches a plot to take over the world.
JULY 21 – INSIDE OUT
Emotions run wild in the mind of a little girl who
is uprooted from her peaceful life in the Midwest
and forced to move to San Francisco. Young
Riley was perfectly content with her life when her
father landed a new job in San Francisco, and the
family moved across the country. Now, as Riley
prepares to navigate a new city and attend a new
school, her emotional headquarters becomes a
hot bed of activity. As Joy attempts to keep Riley
feeling happy and positive about the move, other
emotions like Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness
make the transition a bit more complicated.
JULY 28 – THE GOOD DINOSAUR
In this enchanting computer-animated
fantasy, set in a world where the dinosaurs
never went extinct, an amiable young Apatosaurus
named Arlo loses his father in a storm and
is swept away by a vicious river current, stranding
him in a frightening new place far from his
home. He soon embarks on a journey to reunite
with his family, and befriends a prehistoric human
child known as Spot along the way.
The movie screening will start at 8 pm or dusk if later. Early arrival is strongly recommended to secure a good
spot and attendees can bring their own chair or blanket. Downtown restaurants nearby will be open late. For
more information visit www.RiversideDowntown.org or www.facebook.com/RiversideDowntownPartnership
EVENT: JULY 9-10
Festival Celebrates The Native Lemon Lily
The Idyllwild Nature Center hosts the Lemon Lily Festival,
July 9-10 in Idyllwild, a small resort town nestled mile-high in
the San Jacinto mountain range and easily accessible from all
of Southern California.
The Nature Center has continued to host the Lemon Lily
festival each year since its inception. This year’s festival will be the
seventh annual and promises to be among the best! Special features
include folk music, pony rides, a children’s pioneer town, crafts and
vendors of all varieties, and two special guided hikes to see blooming
lemon lilies in the wild.
The Lemon Lily Festival was founded in 2009 by local businessman
Doug Yagaloff along with several botanists, business folk, and
the Idyllwild Garden Club who had a common vision of restoring
the Lemon Lily to its natural habitat in the San Jacinto Mountains.
This group enlisted the help of volunteers, the Idyllwild Nature
Center and the US Forest Service to make this vision a reality.
Their vision was distilled into the following Mission Statement:
“The mission of the Lemon Lily Festival is to foster an appreciation
for the threatened native Lily, Lillium parryi, educate the public of
its plight and relevance to Idyllwild, restore it to its historical range
and benefit Idyllwild economically by promoting it as a visitor
destination.”
Check out www.lemonlilyfestival.com for more details. The
Idyllwild Nature Center is located at 25225 Hwy 243 in beautiful
Idyllwild. IER
High School located at 9453 Citrus Avenue in
Fontana.
The Kids Zone will provide non-stop energy
SPECTACULAR
4th of July Celebration
As the sun goes down, the celebration will
heat up with live music and entertainment with
a performance by Beatles vs Stones - A Musical
Shoot Out. The British Invasion brought us
the two most popular rock groups of all time,
the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, as well as the
liveliest debate in rock history – which band is the
greatest? These two legendary bands will engage
in an on-stage, mash-up duel – a musical “shoot
out of the hits” if you will – featuring internationally
renowned tribute bands, Abbey Road and
Jumping Jack Flash. Watch as these two bands
go head-to-head to see which one can rock your
socks off the most!
Finally, as the sun goes down, watch the sky
light up with the City’s 20-minute fireworks show
beginning at 9pm. This dazzling pyrotechnic
display will be accompanied to choreographed
music and is guaranteed to have you leaving the
event filled with a spirit of patriotism and a sense
of gratitude.
Buy your tickets starting Monday, June 1, for
ZOO TIME!
Big Bear Alpine Zoo
Strives Towards
New Heights
High in the mountain region of Big Bear Lake, a
gaze of raccoons (that’s what you call a group of
raccoons) is scurrying across branches foraging
for food items while other members of the gaze are
busy at a nearby water source involved in their dunking
ritual, rinsing their food through the water. What at
first appears to be both food and hand washing is actually
the technique used by raccoons to heighten their
sense of touch, giving them precise information on
what they are about to consume.
Not far away, a male black bear tilts his head up
and with a rapid succession of airflow through his
nostrils, determines that a tasty food source is close by.
His sense of smell, 100 times more powerful than that
of a human’s, picks up a scent of an edible possibility.
With massive arm and shoulder strength to accompany
the incredible sense of smell, the 400-pound omnivore
moves massive logs in an effort to find each morsel of
hidden edible treasure.
Known for their expertise as an ambush predator,
two mountain lions blend in with their surrounding
mountain flora, hiding between bark and branch.
Above the ground, the brown, black, and grey hues of
their fur makes them almost invisible allowing them to
scan the activity on the ground beneath them.
A perfect match for the surrounding bark of forest
trees, their stealth-like behavior makes them almost
undetectable.
California has some of the most diverse wildlife
in North America. But you don’t have to camp out in
the wilderness just to catch a glimpse of some of our
state’s amazing animals. In fact, the animals described
above are actually animals at the Big Bear Alpine Zoo.
Founded in 1959, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo is the only
Alpine Zoo of its kind in the United States. Situated at
almost 7,000 feet above sea level, the Big Bear Alpine
Zoo serves as a rehabilitation facility for both mountain
and nearby communities. With a nearly 80% success
rate, animals are nursed back to health or weaned onto
solid foods and then released back into the wild. If an
animal is too injured or if it has lost its fear of humans,
it cannot be released and has a home for life at Big Bear
Alpine Zoo.
“Our goal at the zoo is to connect our guests to
wildlife, to demonstrate both the uniqueness of our
animals and their habitat in the wild,” says Curator
Bob Cisneros. “As for our animals, we focus on their
natural behaviors, providing them with opportunities
to thrive. I think this combination of connecting
guests to wildlife and meeting the welfare needs of our
animals makes us very successful at what we do.”
If you are planning a trip to Big Bear, get your wild
on! A visit to the zoo is the best way to see representatives
of our mountain ecosystem. Located on 2.5 acres,
Big Bear Alpine Zoo brings the wild to you, housing
over 100 animals, mostly native species.
The zoo is open daily from 10am through 5pm and
is located at 43285 Goldmine Drive in Big Bear Lake,
right across the street from Bear Mountain Ski and
Board Resort.
Each day at noon there is an animal presentation
done by one of their keepers and three animal enrichment
talks at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm.
If you want to know more about the facility and
the animals in their care, check out the website at www.
Take Me Along opened on Broadway in
October of 1959, during the “Golden Age of
Broadway.” Originally starring Jackie Gleason,
who won the 1960 Tony Award for his hilarious
performance, and also starring Walter Pidgeon in
his magnificent singing role, Take Me Along is a
high spirited family musical filled with wonderful
songs and delightfully funny scenes. The musical
made a star of Robert Morse, and introduced a
young dancer to Broadway by the name of Valerie
Harper. The Music & Lyrics for the musical were
Take Me Along is set
on July 4, 1906, and
is the perfect family
musical.
written by Robert Merrill (Funny Girl) with book
by Joseph Stein (Fiddler On The Roof) and Robert
Russell. It was originally produced by David Merrick,
with staging by Onna White.
After closing on Broadway, the musical played
National Tours and summer stock venues for several
years. It was so popular that United Airlines
adapted the title song for a massive ad campaign
in the late ‘60s.
CATS is reviving the musical again, having
produced it 15 years ago. Director-Choreographer
Karen Sargent Rachels, who once toured
with the musical along with Dan Dailey, has fond
memories of the show. She says: “Along with a
terrific score, the musical has a wonderful script,
based on Eugene O’Neill’s classic comedy, Ah,
Wilderness!. Teenagers as well as Senior citizens
fall in love, come of age and try to stay out of
trouble, all with delightful singing and dancing.
If you liked The Music Man, you’ll love
Take Me Along.”
Take Me Along is set on July 4, 1906, and
is the perfect family musical. Once again, CATS’
Set Designer, Joanne McMaster, has designed a
lovely period set for use on the Performing Arts
Center’s revolving stage. Costumes are designed
by Priscilla Anderson, with Bob Perry in charge of
Set Construction. Karen Bergmann is Associate
Producer, Adam McDonald is Production Coordinator
and Joe Sellarole is Musical Director. The
cast includes several of CATS’ star performers including
Steve Mangels, Adam McDonald, Diana
Hintergardt, Nancy Walker, Timmy Brasher and
Jessica Brasher.
Tickets are on sale now. Tickets and information
PAGEANT OF THE
MASTERS DIRECTOR PLAYS
MATCHMAKER WITH 2016
SHOW, ‘PARTNERS’
The 2016 Pageant of the Masters, Partners,
sets out in search of stories of compelling
collaborations that led to the creation of unforgettable
artworks. This one-of-a-kind theatrical
event, featuring live narration and original music
performed live by the Pageant’s orchestra, takes
place in the beautiful Irvine Bowl on the grounds
of Laguna’s Festival of Arts July 7 – August 31.
“My inspiration for Partners began during
research for the 2012 show, The Genius,” said
Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy. “We
discovered a portrait of the Lavoisiers, an influential
husband-and-wife team doing scientific
research in 18th century France. Theirs was a
partnership in both science and art.” She continued,
“Then, in the midst of planning a salute
to movies in 2013’s The Big Picture, I began to
think ‘dance in the movies’ might be a wonderful
subject for an end-of-act-one finale, including
a tribute to the masters of cinematic
choreography and iconic dance partners, Gene
Kelly and Fred Astaire.”
Pageant Scriptwriter Dan Duling added,
“Art doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Leonardo’s
mural of The Last Supper wouldn’t exist if he
hadn’t found a patron to give him the go-ahead.
And who knows where Lewis and Clark might
have ended up without the guidance and assistance
of Sacajawea?”
The 2016 Pageant will feature artworks from
many nations including France, Spain, Sweden, Italy
and Mexico, in search of memorable art made
possible by partnerships – between husbands and
wives, artists and models, even artists and their
patrons. This theatrical and musical journey will
also consider how partnership can become an
ideal subject for masterpieces devoted to family,
love and courtship, as well as historical, scientific
and even fictional quests. Director Challis Davy
acknowledged the challenge she’s already faced.
“There are so many artworks inspired by partnerships,
it’s difficult to narrow them down.”
From the warm familial scenes of Sweden’s
Carl Larsson to the surreal originality of Frida
Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Partners promises a
double-dose of theatrical fun and surprises.
This summer’s production will find new and
exciting ways to tell the stories to be found
within a gallery of masterpieces, many appearing
on the Pageant stage for the very first
time. As a preview, Challis Davy said, “We’re
planning to incorporate video and live action
sequences along with a behind-the-scenes look
at how tableaux are created, and how volunteers
are selected for the show. We will use the
lovely moonlit landscape of our amphitheater
as a perfect setting for some of the sculptural
tableaux.”
Challis Davy also shared a bit of Pageant history
that resonates with this theme. Eighty years
ago, in 1936, Laguna legends Roy and Marie
Ropp presented their second summer production
they had christened the Pageant of the Masters.
Their blend of live music, narration and living
pictures effectively created the template for
today’s internationally-acclaimed Pageant. And
that year, the Ropps concluded their production
with its largest and most ambitious tableau.
The first presentation of Leonardo’s The Last
Supper brought national attention to the Festival
and Pageant and effectively changed the course
of history for this Laguna Beach tradition. With
only three exceptions, The Last Supper has been
the program’s traditional finale ever since.
Back in 1936, Roy Ropp looked to his friends
and neighbors to realize his Pageant dreams.
Today, director Challis Davy depends every bit
as much on the devotion and dedication of her
army of volunteers who join together each summer
as cast members and backstage volunteers.
Challis Davy summed up her ambitions for
this summer’s Pageant. “I think there will be
partnerships presented that everyone can relate
to. We hope Partners will be beautiful and entertaining,
and encourage our audiences to think
about the people they know and love who have
inspired and encouraged them.” IER
