passing through the entrance to ex-resort Bombay Beach 40 miles later that we started to feel a strangeness in the air.<br />
As we rolled over the cracked pavements into town, we began to realise that this wasn’t quite the ghost town we’d imagined. But only just, by the<br />
grace of God. Dusty blocks of derelict trailers and smashed-up pre-fab buildings were peppered with the odd sign of life; individual well-kept yards<br />
with intact fences, decorated with Americana, and the occasional dog barking to keep out intruders. We also noticed the strange popularity of<br />
golf carts.<br />
We drove very slowly, taking everything in. People actually live here, we thought to ourselves.<br />
