Homebrew Dog Low Fat Latte in a Can Coffee in a can isn’t exactly the most ground-breaking invention out there, but people are still getting excited about La Columbe draft latte, launching March 1st. Whether that’s because it is a new step up in canned coffee drinks or simply the power of hype remains to be seen. Created by La Columbe in Philadelphia – and available to buy online for non-locals – it’s a 9oz, 120 calorie drink with minimal ingredients (coffee, water, reduced fat milk, cane sugar, acacia gum) that claims to have just a sixteenth of the sugar found in a Starbucks frappucino. It also comes with the advantage of (a) not being sold by Starbucks and (b) not being a frappucino. Anyone offering a credible alternative to the all-consuming high street coffee chains is fine by us, so we wish him luck. http://www.lacolombe.com/ In what might be either a moment of mad folly or a cunningly calculated stunt – and this particular organization rarely seem to do anything that hasn’t been thoroughly calculated, so we suspect the latter – self-proclaimed ‘beer punks’ Brewdog have made the recipes for all their beers available to download, free of charge. That’s some 215 different brews, past and present, available to home brew (assuming that you can obtain the right hops, malts etc) and experiment with. Don’t think the 32% Tactical Nuclear Penguin is strong enough? Now’s you chance to try and up the volume. As Brewdog beers all start their lives with homebrew size systems, there is no reason why these recipes shouldn’t work for the home enthusiast, and this is the ideal opportunity for the budding beer mad scientist to play around and recreate the booze currently only available in Brewdog bars or in bottles and cans (or, in some cases, not available at all). Presumably, the boys at Brewdog are assuming that bigger rivals will have already been able to imitate their brews (and in the end, there are still only so many ways to make beer, so handing out these recipes is not exactly exposing state secrets). But still, the opportunity to home brew something more interesting that the off-the-shelf kits without the risk of going blind in the process is not to be sniffed at. https://www.brewdog.com/diydog 8
In a Toyshop Far, Far Away... Oh, knock off toys… once commonly found on market stalls and in less salubrious retailers, now very much a thing of the past thanks to eagle eyed lawyers and greedy multinationals. So imagine our delight at finding these shameless Star Wars imitations on sale. Produced by – ahem – PMS, the Galaxy Wars action figure collection might just remind you of a certain blockbuster film franchise, though I’m sure that any similarity is entirely coincidental. <strong>The</strong>se figures are sadly unnamed, so we’ll just assume that they are called Dark Raider and Storm Soldier. Neither seem to resemble the tooled up, robotic character portrayed on the packaging. As you might hope, the quality of these ‘action’ figures is decidedly poor – only the arms and head move, and the cape is a few millimetres too long, ensuring that you can’t actually stand it up. <strong>The</strong> grip on the toy gun is tenuous to say the least. Marvellous. It’s wonderful to imagine these being bought as gift for disgruntled children by addled grandparents, and the mere fact that such shameless and shoddy knock-off toys still exist at all fills us with a certain joy.
