Hello Readers
Thank you in advance for reading this magazine. We want to make young adults
aware of the different opinions people have on technology because they are the
next generation and they all need to know what the good and bad aspects of
technology are. Because there are many. They think technology is good in some
cases and bad in others. Who is right? We don’t know but hopefully after you read
the magazine you will have your own opinion on whether technology and
everything related to it is good for humanity or bad. We know that this topic has
been the most popular topic for debates lately and we want to contribute by giving
people information on what they want to argue about.
We hope you enjoy our magazine and read it until you are finished, not
because it isn’t good. We also hope you recommend this magazine to your friends,
family and anyone else you might know and spread the information we provide so
everyone is aware.

Tech school
By: Kristine Panayotopoulos
Technology is a popular debate topic
because everyone believes in something
different about it. Is it good or bad? Who
knows?
There are a lot of people around the world
who believe technology is corrupting
children slowly, especially within the older
generations. They think that things like
computers,
to go to the library, find a book that had the
information they needed and then write their
essay, but now with computers, students can
research and write their essays at the same
time. Teachers are also able to correct
assignments using computers. Many teachers
in St. Johns use a website called Engrade
which allows students to hand in assignments
via this website and their teachers can correct
these assignments without wasting ink or
paper.
Televisions, cell
phones and other different forms of
technology are being introduced to younger
and younger children to damage their minds
and change how they act, think and speak.
Although many people believe this to be true,
it is quite the opposite, technology was
created to help people and make their lives
easier, especially children.
Technology has made learning easier and
fun, using games to encourage little kids to
learn. Kids can learn at home on their
computer and it makes life easier for both
teachers and students.
Writing essays is much easier for high school
students because all the information they
need is available anywhere they can find a
connection. Before the internet, children had
Things like GPS and electronic gadgets help
us every day whether we are aware of it or
not. GPS helps us when we are lost or when
we want to know where to go. Our own cell
phones help us in a greater way than most
think. It allows us to communicate with
others easily and if ever we need help or we
are unsure of something, we just need to look
it up and in less than a minute we have what
we need.
Another great reason why technology
is good is because people all over the world
can learn using computers if they have access
to them. Someone can be part of an online
school, they could go to McGill University in
Quebec when they live in

Africa and learn the same thing as if they were
physically in the school.
Everything is also sent through E-mail
So the schools can save even more paper . Instead of
sending the same copy of a memo or a letter to
every student in the school, they just type it up and
address it to the students and hit Send. Everything
we used to have to do by hand is now done using a
computer and this makes it easy for everyone, if a
teacher needs to correct an assignment, then they
don’t need to figure out what letter a student wrote
because letters on the computer are legible and
easy to read.
Technology can be very helpful with our everyday
lives. It helps with school , makes everybody’s day
easier and it is accessible to everybody.
So is technology really as bad as people make
it out to be?

Second side
of the coin
By: Kristine Panayotopoulos
Many people believe that
technology was a very bad idea. That
nobody should have invented the
internet or cell phones or anything like
that. They think that people are
becoming too dependent on it. Maybe
they’re right.
The internet has become quite a crutch
with students. If they are unsure of
something they’re first instinct is to
look it up on Google. They don’t even
try to solve their problem, they just go
directly to the internet for the answers.
Spelling is also an issue relating to the
internet because the more students use
spellcheck and auto correct, the less
they actually know because the
computer is doing all the work. When
it comes time to exam time, many
students misspell a lot of words since
they don’t have spell check in real life.
Another problem that children and
adults face is obesity. The more time
someone spends in front of a screen,
the less they exercise and the
unhealthier they become. Someone
who doesn’t spend a lot of time in
front of the T.V. will get all the
benefits of living life properly because
when they walk around, they are
moving and being active while other
people will sit around, mindlessly
eating anything and not moving
anything more than their arm to reach
for the remote.
Many people have neck and head
problems because they are always
hunched over their computers or their
cellphones. Always having this posture
can cause serious damage to the neck
and leave it permanently deformed.
Also, forcing their eyes to read or
watch something on a tiny screen can
cause headaches and blurred vision.
There is also the lack of privacy which
is very important to many people. It is
easy to hack into someone’s computer
if you know how to do it and once
someone does it, everything can be
seen. Even someone without the
knowledge of hacking into another
person’s computer can find things out
about that person. Searching people’s
address and information is just as easy
as typing in a name. there is also the
fact that people like to post every little
detail about their lives on Facebook,
twitter or any other social media which
doesn’t help. A lot of people will share
their location when they go somewhere
to let people know where they are
going on vacation or whatever but they
don’t realize that by doing this it tells
people that they won’t be home so
other people can do what they want to
the house or the person.

The internet isn’t as innocent as people
thought. People will use it to create a false
profile so perverts and people like that can
get what they want without getting in
trouble. No matter what the world does with
the internet or how they use it, it’s just not a
good thing. People will hurt themselves by
being hunched over a keyboard or they will
gain way too much weight by not moving
for too many hours. Is that really what you
want for you or others?

Virtual Reality
By Emma Casavant
Virtual reality over the years has started
to evolve during the years without us even
knowing. Now day’s space and
technology has been a great mix to create
new technology that could change space
exploration one day. Recently virtual
reality and Mars have been under
development so it would be possible to
train astronauts, maneuver the Mars rover
and also support the long journeys on
Mars.
Since the mid-1980’s NASA had started
early to work on virtual-reality goggles. In
this research technology has been playing
an important role in training and guiding
astronauts. According to Dugan, who
earlier presented a hybrid reality system
where people on ground could interact
with real life environments, astronauts
could later have the ability to use real
tools to practice repair work on the space
station. By combining technology and
space together, astronauts could practice
taking measurements on Mars in their
spacesuit by this summer, which could be
a great evolution considering the fact that
the gravity doesn’t always help with
accuracy and the environment.
A new program called “OnSight” is a 3D
software tool that would allow researchers
on Mars to look at photographic data from
Curiosity in 3D and plan the route that the
rover should take. According to Lavery,
who created the OnSight software,
researches can spend 20 years trying to
get a grip of interpreting 2D images to
judge how far away and how large objects
are before getting some kind of master at
the 2D. Also people who have been doing
it for 20 years who are really good at it
actually can’t get a proper grip at it, but
with 3D, things might actually be easier
for them than the 2D technology. The
new setup would allow researchers to
move in 3D the reconstruction of the
surface of Mars. Later in 2016, the public
will have a chance to get a different 3D
experience of Mars, with high quality to
make it seem as if they were actually
doing missions on Mars.
The project 2030 is also greatly involved
with the new 3D technology which will
prepare participants of the mission to be
ready for the mission. The virtual mission
will follow NASA guidelines that were
put in place to have detailed plans for
human and robotic exploration.
Peggy Wu, saw things differently though,
yes she wanted to use virtual reality but
for a different reason. The virtual reality
could give astronauts a break from the
isolation on Mars, rather than taking
humans virtually on Mars. The
technology is called “Ansible”, which will
be studying for a period of 12 months to
see what the company could do to make
this project efficient for astronauts. So far
according to Wu, the first 6 months of
study and the results are very promising.

The virtual reality would make astronauts
think they are exploring nature, going on
vacation, and have them feeling as if they
are closer to their families.
Can’t you just imagine what it would be
like to be virtually on vacation while
actually being at school?

Ai’s: friend
or foe
By: Kristine Panayotopoulos
Have you ever thought of how
cool it would be to have a robot to
help you out? Well so have other
people and some scientists are
starting to make them.
There are many skeptics about
the whole robot helping humans
out situation because they think
that the robots will “turn on their
masters” and injure them badly or
kill them. These people could be
right, but they could also be very
wrong.
Of course the possibility has
come up and the scientists have
considered this option, and they
have come up with pros and cons
of artificial intelligence.
Con #1: They have the ability to
replace human jobs. Yes this is
not the best thing, losing a job to
something that isn’t human, but
still better than dying.
Con #2: They can malfunction
and do the opposite of what they
were programmed to do. This is
one of the problems people are
most worried about because it is
true that something could happen
and they could do more harm
instead of good, but what are the
chances of that actually
happening.
Con #3: They can be misused and
result in mass destruction. Now this
is the one people are truly afraid of
because nobody wants to be in a
war with a machine that could
probably be programmed to kill the
entire human race.
Although these are all
realistic possibilities there are still
many advantages to having
artificial intelligence by our side.
Pro #1: They can take on complex
and stressful work that humans
might not be able to do. This is a
very good advantage because

sometimes people just can’t handle
a certain situation and they won’t
perform as well under certain
circumstances, whereas an AI
doesn’t have emotions and will
accomplish a task with ease.
Pro #2: They can complete a
task faster than a human could. This
is another good advantage
because humans can only work so
fast before getting tired but a robot
can work for a longer and faster
period of time.
disadvantages, there are also
advantages to having artificial
intelligence around. They can
make our lives much simpler but
they can also make it harder. Let’s
just hope for human’s sake that the
latter doesn’t happen.
Besides, what could possibly go
wrong?
Pro #3: They will make less errors.
As the saying goes “we’re only
human” so it’s natural for us to
make mistakes, even silly little
ones, but an
AI wouldn’t make mistakes. It
would work until its task is
completed and then stop, without
making any errors.
So even if you weren’t the biggest
fan of robots to begin with, you
can see that although there are

Report on Advertising
A magazine is not to be only composed of words and articles. We need to expand beyond
such to include those attracted by visual stimulations. I am more compelled to read a magazine
with ads because it gives my eyes the chance to rest while also still learning something. Ads also
make the magazine seem smaller, not so intimidating, and simply becomes much easier to read.
Beginning with our introductory ad, it is a sort of throwback. As the first typewriter was
introduced in 1714, almost 302 years ago. Maybe it is my new generation self that is talking, but
typewriters are outdated. Only being used by savvy hipsters and those who clutch onto them
refusing to acknowledge modern forms of typing. This was included in our final product release
as it is one of the first pages you see, the nostalgia of this will draw the attention of the older
generations while the ad being written by the Government of Canada with draw the attention of
young adults and adults as messages from such a higher power are taken seriously. Our target
audience is broad, technology is limited to no one. Though we will test methods to draw in
certain people. This ad will be one of them.
Our secondary ad, which was placed a little ways away from the first one in the final
copy is simple. Simple will do the job as more complex things can not only confuse people, but
turn them off. The ad represents Expedia, a well-known travel company. Who doesn’t want to
travel? This ad again like the first has no particular audience. It is what we call an impulse ad.
Meaning it gets you thinking about travelling, maybe you have no self-control and will book a
flight the next day. Maybe you weren’t financially ready for it, but the ad did its job.
Moving on to our third ad, we come to a small announcement for a concert coming in
2017 that the band known as “The turtles” will be using to promote their new album “The
Milton’s”. This is one of our ads that we placed in the final that actually in a way had a specific
target audience. The most common age group at concerts now a days who have modern singers
performing, are teenagers and young adults. As popular music now a days does not always
appeal to the older generations, I honestly can’t blame them. This was used to appeal to a young
demographic as it seems to be a trend to randomly go and find weird new concerts to go to. It

makes you unique, especially if the band grows and you can brag about being one of the first to
seem them.
The topic of our fourth ad swerves a little away from the flow of the others. It is an
information/help line for those suffering or for those who know someone who is suffering from
cyberbullying. We aren’t ones to say there is a specific age that cyberbullying occurs within. It
can happen to anyone. Even the most popular person you know. We put this ad in our magazine
because it isn’t easy for people to talk about what happens online, not everyone will take it
seriously. Some will just tell you to turn your phone off. But it won’t always go away like that.
We wanted to include a helpline because calling someone we know will help, is comforting, and
gives those too afraid to speak out, a chance.
Moving onto our fifth, this ad targeted younger readers as it sparks a sense of wonder and
the thinking of “Maybe I can do that one day”. The NASA ad was included because our
development in technology and space travel is phenomenal, it fascinates children to the point of
when they’re asked what they want to be when they grow older, many of them will say “I wanna
be an astronaut!”, and that is what we wanted. We want to promote a child’s curiosity. We want
them to dream, want them to have goals and ambitions. We want them to decide their own life.
Which is why we included it, we want to respark that childlike ambition in our readers. Not only
that, but the quote “failure is not an option” sparks determination, it hits home. We want to make
that quote real.
Now coming across the sixth ad, you might be thinking, how do bikes have anything to
do with technology? At least everyday bikes, they’re powered by us aren’t they? Magazine, go
home, you’re drunk. But truly, I’m not. While there are technological advancements for bikes,
what this ad is for is to act as another broad warning for bikers. Especially rule number 3, “Act
like a car”. This means, no texting, no answering calls unless it is Bluetooth, no listening to
music in BOTH ears while biking. All ages bike, and all ages forget that they share a road, and
most of the time there aren’t designated zones for bikers, meaning it isn’t the cars fault if they
drive close to you because they have a car coming on their side. Answering texts keeps you from
looking up and seeing dangers. Which already is a pretty big deal. Answering calls is the same,
listening to music in both ears, blocks out traffic and such around you which will put you at risk.

A risk no one wants to take over a text. This was included in the final because even though
technology is cool and captivating, there is a time and a place for it, riding a bike is not one of
them.
Our final ad isn’t captivating, isn’t in your face, it isn’t deep and meaningful. It’s a
reminder, again, like most of our ads. We want a broad demographic, limitations in who has
access to technology, we believe, shouldn’t exist. Which is why we finish our ads off with such a
basic one. Turn off the lights when you leave a room, I myself am guilty of this, so I am not one
to preach. Though I can remind you that if you leave all the lights on, all the time. When the time
comes for your electricity bill, I wouldn’t want to be you. Save on money, travel, I hear Expedia
is great.

Marketing
Our magazine was successful towards accomplishing the respectful constraints that were
imposed for the magazine project. Most of the constraints were pretty basic and very easy to
accommodate to the magazine. I expect the profit to be a little higher than 100$ due to the fact
that most advertisement will cover the total cost of each article and page. If less advertising
pages were added, the profit rate would have a major drop which of lead us to be in debt. Also if
there are too many ads, the budget would not only give us a higher profit rate but it may also
cause readers to be less appealed by the numerous advertisements, it would be overwhelming.
The impact of including more words only added a small impact to the magazine because each
word is worth a certain amount of money and if you don’t get enough revenue from the
advertisements it could impact the limitation of the number of words that you can include. After
all the profits, even if they aren’t huge, I believe that we should stay in the magazine business
because every first time could be just a pinch of the success that you could achieve later on.
