FRIDAY 10 JUNE 2016 THE BUGLE 15
Crous takes glory in 50 metre elimination event in Monaco
Continued from Back Page...
“We are absolutely thrilled by his
achievement and will support
him 100 percent at all times,'
said Juan.
AS Katinka Hosszu claimed
three more titles on the final day,
it was South Africa’s Chad le
Clos who completed a butterfly
sweep of Monaco, posting an
impressive 51.58 to break the
meet record in the 100m.
Hosszu’s first victory was the
most comprehensive. The “Iron
Lady” swam a 4:06.65 to claim
the 400 free title by a massive
7.6 seconds over the promising
Canadian Taylor Ruck whose
4:14.20 was enough to secure
the silver ahead of Yuxi Chen
(4:16.13) of China.
Shortly after, Hosszu edged
Zimbabwean Olympian Kirsty
Coventry and Russian Anastasiia
Fesikova for a narrow 100
back win in a race that had the
crowd on their feet. The Hungarian
posted a 1:00.10 to finish
well ahead of the Zimbabwean
stalwart (1:00.67) and Russian
(1:00.70). Here 16 year old
Gratitude and Recovery .
AFTER the Comrades two weeks
ago (already ) I thought this
would be an apt topic for this
weeks blog .
Many of us take running
/walking and the ability to
exercise for granted and sometimes
it takes an event like the
Comrades Marathon to jolt us in
to realizing how lucky we are.
Running past the Ethembeni
School for the disabled in Catoridge
especially really brings this
home to me every year.
Hundreds of children from the
school line the road in wheelchairs
/crutches etc and it is
extremely humbling for all of us.
We can all count ourselves
extremely lucky to be able to do
what we do. Think on this next
time you are having a ”bad “ run
.
Recovery and rest work go hand
in hand and it essential for all
runners to allow themselves the
time to recover sufficiently.
The average runner will need to
South African Mariella Venter
looked solid in finishng in fifth
place with a 1:01.78.
Later in the meet’s final event,
Hosszu went 2:11.11 to hand
Coventry a comprehensive beating
for the 200 IM title. The
Zimbabwean veteran posted a
2:13.45 to edge out Austrian
hopeful Lisa Zaiser (2:13.70)
Earlier in the evening South
African Michael Meyer was
denied a podium finish in the
400 IM when he posted a
4:26,65 to claim fourth place in
the opening event of the session.
Feilian Mao of China took home
the title in 4:18.94 with Canadian
Luke Riley (4:22.49) and
Hungarian Peter Bernek
(4:24.35) completing the podium.
Vsevolod Zanko of Russia
claimed the 100 breaststroke
honors in 1:00.74 in the absence
of Olympic Champion, South
African Cameron van der Burgh
who scratched from the meet
due to illness on Sunday morning.
van der Burgh’s compatriot
and Tuks Swimming teammate,
On the run
with
Mike Webb
rest at least 2 to 3 weeks after
an event like the Comrades
Marathon in order to recover
properly.
Like I have said before 'listen
to your body'.... It will tell you
when you are ready to head out
on the road again.
Once you feel it is time to start
up again , start slowly
,incorporate plenty of alternative
exercise like swimming and
cycling and light stretching .
These recovery tips apply to
anyone doing any event that
pushes you past your limits and
creates muscle tissue damage.
the exciting youngster Crous
will be well pleased with his
silver medal effort of 1:00.99
posting significant distance between
himself and bronze medalist,
Germany’s Marco
Koch (1:01.72).
Crous went one better in the 50m
elimination “dash for cash”
events when he trumped Vsevolod
Zanko.
World record-holder Paul Biedermann
posted a 1:46.71 to beat
le Clos (1:49,28) by 2.5 seconds
in the 200 free. The minor
podium place went to Welson
Sim from Malaysia with a
1:49.29 who edged out Le Clos’s
Seagulls ASC team mates Myles
Brown (1:49.67) and sixth
placed Calvyn Justus (1:51.19).
The Mare Nostrum Series moved
onto Canet in France for more
world class action.
