The state which experienced
severe drought this
summer saw a high number
of farmer suicides.
The campaign comes as
ray of hope to many farmers
who have been victims
of drought and ignorance.
The campaign is well
planned with an amount
of Rs. 75 lakh put into
planning and execution
the people. Talking about
black money he said,
“One of the main election
promises of BJP was about
bringing back all the black
money within six months
of their ruling. But nothing
happened even after
two years. They celebrated
the completion of two successful
years of their government.”
He said with the Uttar
In his speech, while
talking about the need for
job opportunities in the
Is another protest on cards by the Police?
Rumors of the police
constables going on
strike again are making
rounds. With the police
mass leave strike going
unsuccessful on June 4,
the constabulary is reportedly
planning for
another protest on July
4.
The State constabulary
has decided to go
on a hunger strike on
July 4 and would continue
doing so till their
demands are met by the
government. A head
constable said that the
government invoked
ESMA (Essential Services
Maintenance Act)
and that led to the failure
of the proposed
strike on June 4.
Home Minister G.
It is also said that
they are thinking of
not using their personal
mobile phones and
vehicles for official
purpose after July 4
and that would impact
their functioning which
would force the government
to rethink on
the constabulary’s demands.
Shashidhar Venugopal,
founder of Akhila
Karnataka Police Mahasangha
and the alleged
mastermind behind
the June 4 strike
by the policemen reportedly
launched the
campaign early last
month with fiery and
highly emotional messages
that instigated
thousands of constables
to sign up for one
day mass leave. He had
called it the Sepoy Mutiny.
Parameshwara yesterday
said, all the demands
which have no
financial commitments
will be fulfilled in the
next one week. “The demands
which require financial
support will be
met by the next one to
one-and-a-half months.
Demands which include
financial support will
be resolved after discussing
issues with the
Finance Department,”
the Home Minister said.
Former chief minister
and BJP state president,
B. S. Yeddyurappa who
bawled out heavily on
the government earlier
said that the repression
against Akhila Karnataka
Police Mahasabha
and arresting its President
Shashidhar Venugopal
and slapping sedition
charge against him
was gratuitious. The
issue could have been
handled effectively by
inviting the office-bearers
of the Mahasabha
for talks and finding a
solution to the problems
faced by the police
personnel.
Children participated in painting and drawing competition held at Freedom Park by
BBMP on Monday. The event was part of Swachh Bharat initiative. BBMP Mayor Manjunath
From Judge to Author
The advocates association
Bengaluru on 6th of
June had a book released by
Mr. Justice V Gopala Gowda,
Judge of Supreme Court of
India and written by Mr.
Justice HN Nagamohan
Das who is a former judge
of high court of Karnataka
and a senior advocate
of Supreme Court of India.
The book “Challenges to
the Constitution”, which
has multicultural aspects of
life and law. The book deals
with general importance
to students of law, jurists,
lawyers and justice. The
guidance for the book was
by Justice HL Dattu former
chief justice of India. The
event took place at High
Court Unit, AAB Hall Bengaluru.
The pressure finally got
to her! Anupama Shenoy resigns
Review of the sub-division
of the district
of Bellary SP Anupama
Shenoy is back again in
news. A day after her
resignation, Kudligi
Deputy Superintendent
of Police Anupama Shenoy’s
took social networking
site in twirl
in what seems like a
‘rebellion’ of sorts. Of
the two photos Shenoy
posted on the site. One
of them read “When injustice
becomes law, rebellion
becomes duty.”
Shenoy resigned from
her post on Saturday
citing personal reasons,
but there seems to be
no dearth in suspicions
that she resigned owing
to pressure from the liquor
mafia. Shenoy was
under pressure from the
liquor lobby reportedly
operating with the help
the support of local politicians,
police and excise
officials. A group of
people staged protests
against Shenoy last
week, for taking three
persons into preventive
detention and producing
them before the taluk
magistrate. She had
instructed a liquor shop
owner not to go ahead
with extension work,
which would block the
road leading to Ambedkar
Bhavan, failing of
which, she arrested the
owner and two others.
Shenoy, a 2010-batch
officer, was also in the
forefront of cracking
down on liquor and
sand mafia in her jurisdiction.
The reason for
her sudden resignation
is not clear yet.
The arrest had angered
the congress party.
Veerendra Kumar,
Congress leader and
owner of liquor shops
was granted some land
for construction next to
Ambedkar Bhavan near
Kudligi bus stand. However,
the leaders of a
Dalit organization, who
were against the allocation,
complained to her.
Shenoy had asked
building owners to resume
construction activity
only after it was
proved whether construction
of the building
was being carried
out on land owned by
Kumar.
Shenoy’s parents and
younger brother have
been quoted as saying
that she resigned due
to pressure from liquor
lobby, senior and subordinate
officials for
taking action against
illegal liquor. The resignation
letter of Anupama
Shenoy was just a 4
line letter.

Bengaluru: A speeding
Monday. No causalities were
reported. The Cat’s eye reflectors
which weren’t on
of the crash. When the
Accidents have become
sure shot events in the outer
Even in the broad day light,
the number of accidents is
on rise in the silicon city.
The cabs and trucks travelling
their reckless driving.
RTO officials and traffic
the same. There is no clash
of status, we don’t have any
vested interest. We want
I have told the media that
I will not use government
vehicle. It is my personal
colleagues to decide on
that basis.”
The Lt Governor had also
directed that no special
privileges would be accorded
for cars of VIPs such as
stopping of traffic, so that
people’s right to freedom of
movement is not hindered
directed traffic police to ensure
that sufficient number
of personnel are present for
regulating traffic without
halting it or inconveniencing
commuters.
JUNGLE RAJ IN MODI RAJ: KEJRIWAL
Delhi Chief Minister
Arvind Kejriwal said that
there is “complete jungle
raj” in the national capital,
accusing Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and
Lt Governor Najeeb Jung
of “failing to control deteriorating
law and order”.
Referring to the case
of murder of a 50-yearold
woman and her two
daughters at their residence
in North-East
Delhi’s Brahmapuri area
yesterday, he urged both
the PM and the LG to
do “something (to control
crime)”, saying that
“(see) what is happening
in Delhi”.
“Complete jungle raj
in Del. LG/Modi ji failed
miserably. What have
they done to control deteriorating
law n order?”
tweeted the AAP CM.
In a series of tweets
“This is 2 years of Modi
raj,” he said, referring to
the murder case.
In another tweet, he
said, “LG sahib/ Modi ji,
please do something. Ye
delhi mein kya ho raha
hai (what is happening
in Delhi).”
AAP has been demanding
that the control
over Delhi Police be
handed over to the Delhi
government, which
directly reports to the
Union Home Ministry
currently.
Last month, the Delhi
government had released
a draft bill on full
statehood to Delhi, seeking
to bring police, land,
municipal corporations
and bureaucracy under
its control, and kept its
ears open to the public
as well.
Kejriwal had slammed
Delhi Police following
the murder of 19-yearold
Meenakshi who was
stabbed to death in Central
Delhi’s Anand Prabat
area in July last year.
“The law and order
situation is deteriorating
in Delhi every day. Delhi
Police comes under the
Prime Minister. Either
he should do something
or Delhi Police should
be handed over to the
Delhi government,” he
had said after meeting
Meenakshi’s family
members.
He had also said, “If
the police are not answerable
to the Delhi
government then how
will it be held accountable?
Right now, Delhi
Police is a law unto itself.
MIZORAM GOVT TO HAND OVER JASJIT
SINGH CASE TO CBI
The Mizoram government
has completed all
the formalities to hand
over the sensational
dacoity case, allegedly
involving suspended
Commandant of the 39th
Assam Rifles Colonel
Jasjit Singh, to the CBI,
state Home minister R
Lalzirliana said.
Citing the reasons for
its willingness to hand
over the case to the CBI,
the minister told at a
press conference that
the case has national
as well as international
implications as gold
smuggling racket was at
the root-cause of the dacoity.
Lack of modern scientific
technology and
equipment were also obstructions
to the investigation
as the state police
do not have a polygraph
or lie-detector machine,
he said.
“Rumours of involvement
of highly-placed
people in the case and
also Col. Singh’s refusal
to confess, may force us
to hand over the case to
the CBI,” added Lalzirliana.
The state government,
he said, would convey its
decision about the case
to the CBI during this
week.
“Even if the CBI agrees
to take up the investigation,
the state police
would give full co-operation
to the premier investigating
agency and
also continue with the
investigation till the case
is officially
handed over
to the CBI,”
he said.
13 people,
including
Colonel
Singh, eight
Assam Rifles
personnel
and four
civilians
have been
arrested by
the Special
Investigation
Team
(SIT) in connection
with the case,
the minister said.
A vehicle carrying
52 smuggled gold bars
worth Rs 14.5crore was
waylaid on the outskirts
of Aizawl on December
14 last by suspected Assam
Rifles personnel.
The owner and driver
of the vehicle C. Lalnunfela
lodged an FIR on
April 21 against which a
criminal case was registered
at Kulikawn Police
Station in Aizawl.
JAIL FOR 5 PERSONS IN DANISH WOMAN
GANG RAPE CASE
New Delhi: A Delhi
court today convicted
five persons for gang
raping, robbing and kidnapping
a 52-year-old
Danish woman here in
2014.
After pronouncing
the order, Additional
Sessions Judge Ramesh
Kumar fixed June 9 for
hearing arguments on
the quantum of sentence
in the case.
“All accused are held
guilty for all offences,”
the judge said.
The judge convicted
them for the offences
under sections 376 (D)
(gang rape), 395 (dacoity),
366 (kidnapping),
342 (wrongful confinement),
506 (criminal
intimidation) and 34
(common intention) of
IPC.
The convicts, Mahendra
alias Ganja (27), Mohammed
Raja (23), Raju
(24), Arjun (22), Raju
Chakka (23) were present
in the court.
Under the new law for
gang rape, an offender
can be sentenced to rigorous
imprisonment for
a term which shall not be
less than 20 years, but
which may extend to life.
According to the prosecution,
the five, all vagabonds,
had robbed and
gang raped the Danish
tourist at knife-point on
the night of January 14,
2014, after leading her
to a secluded spot close
to the Divisional Railway
Officers’ Club near New
Delhi Railway Station.
During the hearing,
the court was informed
that the defence counsel
had challenged its previous
order dismissing a
plea seeking to examine
some doctors as witnesses
on the potency issue
of the sixth accused,
56-year-old Shyam Lal
who died in February
this year.
The court, however,
said nowhere in the application
it was mentioned
that the proceedings
of this court had
been stayed by the Delhi
High Court.
“Hence, this court is
not barred from passing
the order,” the judge
said.
Three other accused
in the case are juveniles
and the inquiry against
them is in progress before
the Juvenile Justice
Board.
The prosecution had
examined 27 witnesses
in support of its case
while the convicts had
opted not to lead any evidence.
The convicts had
claimed that a day prior
to the incident on January
14, 2014, they had
hired a prostitute and
had physical relations
with her while rejecting
the charges levelled
against them.
TENSION IN DADRI AFTER REPORT SAYS IT WAS
BEEF THAT WAS SLAUGHTERED
DADRI (UTTAR
PRADESH)-The sample
of food which was
collected from the
Mohammed Akhlaq’s
house has come out
and report given to
court says sample has
established beef was
involved.
Nine months after
Mohammed Akhlaq
was killed by a mob
on the suspicion that
his family and he
were eating beef in
their home, hundreds
of villagers near his
house say they must
meet this evening to
demand that a police
case be filed for cow
slaughter against Mr
Akhlaq’s relatives.
To prevent that call
for a mahapanchayat,
the police have said Section
144 is in effect now
in Dadri.
The conclave is a
must, said local BJP
leader Sanjay Rana,
whose son Vishal, is
among those linked by
the police to the murder
of Mr Akhlaq.
Dadri in Uttar
Pradesh is located just
50 km from Delhi. The
police and administration
are already tense
about a new movement
called by the Jats that is
demanding that affirmative
action policies apply
to them just as they do
to castes considered socially
backward.
Last year, on September
28 a mob of people
forced their way into Mr
Akhlaq’s home, beat the
56-year-old to death,
and dragged his body
out onto the street. Last
week, a lab report said
that meat collected from
the scene of the crime
had been established as
that of “cow or its progeny”.
The report contradicted
an earlier document
which stated the sample
was of mutton.
Chief Minister Akhilesh
Yadav has questioned
the authority of
the new report submitted
by the police
in court, and has
stressed that what is
important is punishing
a mob that killed
a man, irrespective of
its motive.
Villagers in Bisada,
home to about 400
Hindu and 25 Muslim
families, however,
say the new
report proves that
Mr Akhlaq’s family
must be investigated
for cow slaughter,
which is illegal in Uttar
Pradesh, though the
possession of beef is not.
It was the announcement
by a priest over
temple loudspeakers
that Mr Akhlaq had
butchered a cow and
that his wife was cooking
beef for dinner
brought a sudden end
to the village’s long-held
tradition of tolerance.
MODI MONITORING PROGRESS OF
MOPA AIRPORT, SECOND ONE IN GOA
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi has been
regularly monitoring the
work on the proposed
International Airport
at Mopa village in the
state, Goa Chief Minister
Laxmikant Parsekar said
today.
“We have plans to lay
the foundation stone for
Mopa International airport
in the first week of
September along with
the Electronic City at
Tuem (in North Goa) by
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi,” Parsekar told
sources.
The Chief Minister
said Modi is monitoring,
every month, the development
with regard to
construction and progress
of the proposed airport.
“Our (Mopa) Greenfield
international airport
is one of the flagship
projects of his (Modi).
He is continuously monitoring
it (the project),”
Parsekar said.
He further said his
government has reached
the fag end of the bidding
process and successful
bidder would be
announced soon.
“The work on Mopa
airport will be on schedule.
The first phase will
be commissioned exactly
after three years of
laying the foundation
stone. If we lay the foundation
stone in 2016, the
first plane will land here
in 2019,” Parsekar added.
The International airport
at Mopa would be
the second such facility
in the coastal state after
the existing Dabolim
airport, which is located
in South Goa, around 40
kms from here.
MISUSE OF AFSPA WAS NOT FOUND
IN NORTH EAST: EASTERN ARMY LIEU-
TENANT GENERAL
Defending the imposition
of the controversial
Armed Forces Special
Powers Act (AFSPA) in
the North East, the Army
today said there were no
recent cases of misuse of
the law in the region.
“In Eastern Command,
during the time I have
spent here, there has not
been a single incident
which has been reported
where AFSPA has not
been used for the right
reason,” Eastern Army
Commander Lieutenant
General Praveen Bakshi
said.
He said if there was any
breach of AFSPA, it was
dealt with firmly by the
Army.
“If the Army is required
to handle insurgency, we
require AFSPA. If we don’t
have AFSPA, our hands
are tied and we cannot do
our job. It is an enabling
provision and not a draconian
provision,” he said.
Various human rights
organisations have long
been demanding repeal of
the AFSPA which they call
a “draconian” law.
In Manipur, rights activist
Irom Chanu Sharmila
has been on a fast-unto-death
for 15 years
demanding withdrawal
of AFSPA. She is forcibly
nose-fed at a government
hospital in Imphal.
FIRST INDIAN MR UNIVERSE,
MANOHAR AICH DIES AT 104
Tributes have
been paid to a
celebrated Indian
body-builder,
Manohar Aich,
who has died in
the city of Kolkata,
aged 104. Mr Aich
died of age-related
“complications” on
Sunday, his family said.
He is survived by four
children.
Mr Aich was the first
Indian to become Mr Universe
in 1952, five years
after the country’s independence.
The 1.49m (4ft 10in)
tall bodybuilder was popularly
known as “Pocket
Hercules”.
He began his career as
a stunt man performing
with a famous magician
and would often enthral
the audience by bending
steel with his teeth
or resting his belly on
swords.
Mr Aich, who once
stood for election and
lost, gave his last performance
at the age of 89.
Remembering Aich,
footballer Chuni Goswami
said “He was an inspiration
to everyone, young
and old. Death is inevitable
but Manohar Aich
will be remembered by
all, across every sporting
discipline”.
West Bengal Chief Minister
Mamata Banerjee
said Mr Aich’s death had
“ended a historic era”.”He
made us proud,” Ms Banerjee
added.
After getting a job as a
physical instructor in the
Royal Air Force in British
India in 1942, Mr Aich led
his team to rebel against
what he felt was the “oppression”
of their British
commanders.
An argument ensued
and Mr Aich
ended up slapping
a British officer, for
which he was sent
to a Calcutta jail a
year before India
achieved independence
from British
rule in 1947.
With little else to do in
jail, Mr Aich practiced his
metal-bending skills on
the bars of his cell.
After the triumphs of
his youth he continued
to display his strength at
shows across India and
is credited with inspiring
millions of Indians to get
fit.
When Mr Aich competed
in the 1952 Mr Universe
contest in London,
his statistics were awe-inspiring:
bicep 46cm,
chest 1.2m when swollen,
forearm 36cm and wrist
16.5cm.
“I have been blessed
with this body,” he told
in 2012. “What else does
one want?”
IF NO HELMET NO PETROL RULE FROM IN
ADILABAD DISTRICT
Adilabad: As part of
pioneering approach and
to build the awareness
among the bike riders,
Adilabad district police
have adopted the concept
of ‘No Helmet No Petrol’
rule. The rule is to not
give petrol to two-wheeler
drivers who do not
wear helmets. This rule
will come into force in the
district from June 2nd, the
Telangana State Formation
Day. District Collector
Jaganmohan took this call,
after the official inquiry,
which disclosed that the
majority of the 140 deaths
of two-wheeler drivers in
2015-16 were the results
of head injuries caused by
not using the helmet.
Stipulation for
two-wheeler drivers
comes into effect from today.
Of the 248,410
two-wheelers within the
district, thousands of
their drivers are found
not wearing the head protection.
This call of the
district administration
was taken once holding
conferences with RDOs of
5 revenue divisions and
also the petrol bunk owners,
MVI Kishore Reddy
said.
He warned that cases
would be registered
against the two-wheelers
who found not wearing
helmets. The Revenue and
RTA officials are creating
special arrangements to
sell quality helmets at
gasoline bunks.

DUMP THE TRUMP
Qingdao Wellpaper Industrial
Company said sales of
its Trump toilet papers have
been rising since mid-February.
They had already received
more than 50 orders,
some for up to 5,000 rolls.
Most of the orders were
placed by US buyers.
On Chinese online business-to-business
OBAMA AFFIRMED HIS
COMMITMENT TO SAFE GUARD MUSLIMS
Greeting Muslims
on the commencement
of the
holy month of Ramadan,
US President
Barack Obama
affirmed his commitment
to safeguarding
the civil
rights of all Americans,
regardless
of their religion or
appearance.
“As Muslim
Americans celebrate
the holy
month, I am reminded
that we
are one American family. I
stand firmly with Muslim
American communities in
rejection of the voices that
seek to divide us or limit
our religious freedoms
or civil rights,” Obama
said yesterday in a statement.
“I stand committed
to safeguarding the civil
rights of all Americans no
matter their religion or
appearance. I stand in celebration
of our common
humanity and dedication
to peace and justice for
of reflection, Obama said,
one cannot forget the
millions of lives that have
been displaced by conflict
and struggle, across the
world and in the US.
“Far too many Muslims
may not be able to
observe Ramadan from
the comfort of their own
homes this year or afford
to celebrate Eid with their
children. We must continue
SWISS SUPPORTS INDIA’S
ENTRY TO NUCLEAR ELITE CLUB
India’s application in its
Seoul.
“I am thankful to the
President for Switzerland’s
understanding and
support for India’s membership
of the NSG,” Modi
said.
The NSG looks after
critical issues relating to
the nuclear sector and its
membership will help India
expand its atomic energy
sector.
Modi also said combating
the menace of black
money and tax evasion
was “shared priority” for
both the countries. On his
part, the Swiss President
alleviate the suffering of
these individuals,” he said.
Obama said the US would
continue to welcome immigrants
and refugees,
including Muslims. “This
sacred time reminds us of
our common obligations
to uphold the dignity of
every human being,” he
said.
Extending his wishes to
Muslims across the United
States and around the
world, he said the month
is an opportunity to focus
on reflection and spiritual
growth, forgiveness,
patience and resilience,
compassion for those
less fortunate, and unity
across communities. He
said the US was blessed
with Muslim communities
as diverse as the nation.
“There are those whose
heritage can be traced
back to the very beginning
of our nation, as well
as those who have only
just arrived,” he said.
“It’s also a time of year
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi met Swiss
President Johann Schneider-Ammann
yesterday
to deepen bilateral and
multilateral cooperation
with the key European
nation. Modi arrived in
Geneva late last night from
the Qatari capital Doha on
the third leg of his five-nation
tour. The two leaders
thereafter led delegation-level
talks.
Ahead of his five-nation
tour, Modi had described
Switzerland as India’s key
partner in Europe.”I will
that brings some of the
best dishes to the table
across the world as families
and neighbors gather
for iftar,” he said. US Secretary
of State John Kerry
also greeted Muslims
in the US and around the
world on the occasion.
“Ramadan is a cherished
month in Islam.
It is a sacred period of
prayer and fasting, offering
hospitality, and
remembering those who
are less fortunate,” he
said in a statement. We
wish the 1.6 billion Muslims
around the world a
joyful Ramadan Kareem.
President Barack Obama
had a message for Muslim
Americans preparing to
observe the beginning of
Ramadan on Sunday: He’ll
protect them from people
like Donald Trump who
threaten their religious
liberties.
has banned its 18,600
from drinking alcohol and
activities after police arrested
southern island of Okinawa
on suspicion of drink
and driving following a
car crash that injured two
people.
Sailors will be kept on
base and banned from
drinking until “all personnel
understand the
impact of responsible behaviour
on the US-Japan
alliance”, the navy said.
Sailors living off base will
be allowed to travel to and
from base and conduct
only “essential activities”.
hold talks with President
Schneider-Ammann to
deepen our bilateral and
multilateral cooperation.”
From here, Modi will
travel to the US and then
to Mexico.
PM Modi on Black Money:
Combating the menace
of “black money” and tax
evasion is also our shared
priority. We discussed the
need for an early and expeditious
exchange of information
to bring to justice
the tax offenders. An early
start to negotiations on the
Agreement on Automatic
exchange of information
would be important in
this aspect. The economic
links between our two
countries are strong and
vibrant. India and Switzerland
have both been
the voices of peace, understanding
and humanitarian
values in the world.
We see a perfect connect
between our development
needs and Swiss strengths.
I invite Swiss companies to
partner India’s economic
growth.
In an official statement,
Obama said America
would continue to welcome
immigrants
and refugees, despite
“the voices that
seek to divide us.”
Obama’s official
statement on the
start of Ramadan,
a month long holiday
observed by
Muslims through
fasting during daylight
hours, did not
mention Trump by
name, but the president’s
remarks
clearly seemed to be
a swipe at the presumptive
GOP nominee.
Obama said he looks
forward to hosting Muslims
at the White House
as the month long observation
concludes in July.
Trump on Sunday
suggested that a Muslim
judge may be biased
against him in a Trump
lawsuit because of his
calls for a temporary ban
on Muslims entering the
United States.
Those comments made
on “Face the Nation”
follow a week in which
Trump has argued that an
Indiana-born judge, Gonzalo
Curiel, who is presiding
over one of the Trump
University law suits, is
biased against Trump
because of his Mexican
parentage, and therefore
cannot make a fair ruling.
Among other things,
Trump has called for a
wall along the southern
U.S. border with Mexico.
The restrictions do not
apply to family members
and civilian contractors,
but they are being encouraged
to observe the
rules “in a spirit of solidarity.
The US military
was already observing a
30-day mourning period
at bases on Okinawa after
a contractor was arrested
on suspicion of killing
a 20-year-old Japanese
woman and dumping her
body.
Renewed anger among
Okinawa residents about
the US military presence
threatens a plan to relocate
the US Marines’ Futenma
airbase to a less
populous part of the island,
which was agreed
in 1995 after the rape of
a Japanese schoolgirl by
US military personnel
sparked huge demonstrations
against the base.
Okinawa’s governor and
many residents want the
marines off the island.
37 PASSENGERS INJURED
IN A VIOLENT TURBULENCE
Dozens of people have
been injured when a Malaysia
Airlines flight from
London to Kuala Lumpur
was hit by severe turbulence,
as photos emerged
showing a cabin strewn
with debris and upended
meal carts. Malaysia’s national
carrier, which is still
trying to shake the stigma
of the double disasters of
MH370 and MH17 two
years ago, said “some passengers”
were hurt aboard
MH1 during a rough ride
over the Bay of Bengal on
Sunday.
“Due to a brief moment
of severe turbulence some
passengers suffered minor
injuries,” it said in a statement.
“A small number of affected
passengers and crew
have been treated by medical
officers.” 34 passengers
and six crew members on
board the Airbus A380 had
been hurt. The devastating
MH370 and MH17 disasters
in 2014 pushed the
airline to the brink of bankruptcy
as bookings dried
up. Flight MH370 disappeared
on 8 March of that
year, en route from Kuala
Lumpur to Beijing with
239 passengers and crew.
Debris found in the Indian
Ocean has confirmed the
Boeing 777 went down but
what happened to the flight
in the hours leading to the
crash remains a mystery.
Four months later MH17
was blown from the sky by
a suspected Russian-made
ground-to-air missile over
war-torn Ukraine, killing all
298 passengers and crew.
German airline fixer Christoph
Mueller was brought
in the following year to
oversee a rescue plan that
has entailed slashing 6,000
jobs and dramatically trimming
the carrier’s route
network. In April, however,
Mueller said he was leaving
in September, well before
the end of his three-year
contract, for unspecified
“personal reasons”.
A news agency showed
a woman being taken from
the plane on a stretcher
and wearing a neck brace.
The flight landed safely in
Kuala Lumpur, and a small
number of affected passengers
and crew were given
immediate treatment, the
statement said.
TIES BETWEEN
U.S AND INDIA TO STREGHTHEN
NEWYORK: Prime Minister
Narendra Modi’s
visit will highlight the
growing collaboration
between India and the US
and their “shared leadership”
on the world stage,
the White House said on
the eve of his arrival here.
“This visit celebrates
the remarkable transformation
in US-India ties.
Over the last seven years,
the United States and
India have cemented an
enduring bond of friendship,
built on democratic
values, open societies,
and a respect for a rulesbased
order.
On the invitation of
President Barack Obama,
Modi arrives in the US
capital tomorrow afternoon
as he and Obama
are scheduled to meet at
the Oval Office.
The President will host
a lunch for the Prime
Minister after the meeting.
“The Prime Minister’s
visit will also highlight
the growing collaboration
between our two
countries and, more consequentially,
our shared
leadership on the world
stage,” the official said.
“From addressing climate
change and providing
clean energy solutions,
to deepening our
economic and trade ties,
to preserving cyberspace
as an engine for growth
and development, to protecting
our shared spaces
on the sea, in the air,
and in space, the world
is better when the United
States and India lead
together,” the official said.
On Wednesday, Modi
would address a joint
meeting of the US Congress,
the first foreign
leader to do so this year
and also the first to address
a joint meeting
of the Congress under
Speaker Paul Ryan.
Meanwhile two leading
US dailies the New
York Times and the Wall
Street Journal have said
that Obama building a
relationship with Modi is
primarily aimed at China.
The daily said the US
is encouraging the rise
of India as a giant Asian
partner to balance China,
and India is trying to
accelerate its economy
with an injection of investment
from American
companies.
The Wall Street Journal
said among the factors
propelling India-US the
relationship is China’s
growing footprint in India’s
traditional sphere
of influence in the Indian
Ocean. The White House
is looking to increase economic
and defence co-operation
during the visit
and to cement the new
momentum in ties before
turning the relationship
over to the next US president.
BELGIUM TRAIN CRASHES: 3 DEAD
At least three people
have been killed and nine
injured in a high-speed
train crash in eastern Belgium.
A fast-moving passenger
train slammed into
the back of a goods train
on the same track on Sunday
night, Frédéric Sacré,
a spokesman for Belgian
railway infrastructure
manager Infrabel.
Nine passengers were
injured to varying degrees,
with some described as
being in a critical condition
by authorities during
a press briefing near the
crash scene. The train
was travelling eastwards
on the Namur-Liège line
when the accident occurred
in Saint-Georgessur-Meuse
area at 11pm
local time (9pm GMT).
The accident’s circumstances
were not immediately
clear, with questions
remaining over whether
the passenger train was
able to brake before the
crash.
The information was
already being analyzed to
determine how the crash
took place.
A crisis centre was established
at the scene.
In February 2010, 18
people were killed and
95 injured when two
trains collided in a Brussels
suburb in one of Europe’s
deadliest railway
accidents of the past decade.
More recently, one
person was killed and
nearly 50 injured when a
train carrying highly toxic
chemicals derailed and
exploded near Ghent in
May 2013. The train, with
about 40 people on board,
was travelling between
Liege and Namur at about
90km/h (55mph) when it
hit the goods train. Prime
Minister Charles Michel
tweeted his condolences
to the families of the victims
and wished the injured
a speedy recovery.
Infrabel has begun an
investigation into the
crash. There has been no
comment as to why the
trains were on the same
track.
Infrabel said there
had been what it called
a “lightning incident” on
the track earlier on Sunday
and a tweet by SNCB
had mentioned a signaling
fault on the line at 21:30
local time on Sunday, although
it said this had
been cleared and services
were normal. The investigation
into the cause
of the rail crash is fully
under way. The lightning
strike is a possible line of
inquiry, but there are still
safety systems which are
supposed to come into
place.

SPORTS
DREAMS OR HARSH
REALITY FOR SUSHIL KUMAR
months left for the Olympics,
World Championship in
starting August 5, Las Vegas after winning a
future look bleak for the bronze medal.
An unfavorable verdict
for Sushil may not be the
end on the legal front as
he can still challenge the
ruling in the Supreme
Court. But it could well
signal the end of the road
for perhaps the greatest
Indian Olympian, who
won two back-to-back
medals. Fighting for an
Olympic ticket on the unfamiliar
legal turf, Sushil
Kumar’s glorious wrestling
career may meet an
unceremonious end when
the Delhi High Court pronounces
its verdict on
Monday on who gets to
board the flight to Rio between
him and Narsingh
Yadav.
The Delhi High Court,
in its last hearing on
Thursday, gave clear indications
that it was likely
to give a judgement in
favour of the Wrestling
Federation of India (WFI)
in the tiff over selection
trials in the men’s 74kg
freestyle category.
With less than two
unassuming grappler
from Haryana whose injuries
played a part in the
entire sequence of events
leading upto Monday.
“Problem
is that the
sports code is
nowhere prescribing
that
trial is mandatory.
It has
given flexibility
and autonomy
to the organization
to
decide (mode
of selection).
I do not find
the statutory
mandate
which you are trying to
read into it,” Justice Manmohan
had said during
the final hearing.
Narsingh had secured
the Olympic quota place
for India last year at the
Since then the Maharashtra
grappler has been
staking his claim for the
berth and the WFI had
also been steadfast in its
stand to send Narsingh to
Rio since he had grabbed
the quota.
Going by norms in WFI
guidelines, a quota belongs
to the country and
not to an individual wrestler,
and former world
champion Sushil pointed
out that there should be
a trial in 74kg category
to decide who would go
to Rio.
The 33-year-old, who
had won a bronze medal
in 2008 Beijing Olympics
and followed
it up
with silver in
2012 London
Games, had
moved the
court seeking
directions to
WFI to hold
selection trials.
THE CASE:
Sushil Kumar
finds himself
in an odd position
- to be
appearing in
court for hearings to get
a trial for a spot in the
Olympics.
DJOKOVIC WINS THE FRENCH OPEN
Andy Murray suffered
his eighth grand slam
final defeat as Novak
Djokovic finally took the
French Open title and
with it his place in the
highest pantheon of tennis.
The world number
one becomes the first
man since Rod Laver in
1969 to hold all four trophies
at the same time
after a 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4
victory in his fourth final
at Roland Garros. To
achieve something even
Roger Federer and Rafael
Nadal fell short of in the
same era is truly remarkable
and, by winning his
12th slam title, Djokovic
is only five short of Federer’s
all-time record.
Andy Murray lost out
to familiar foe Novak
Djokovic in the French final
on Sunday afternoon.
The British No.1, like
his opponent, was bidding
to win his first title
at Roland Garros. But
Djokovic held his nerve
to win convincingly and
complete a career Grand
Slam if he is victorious.
The Serbian has now
won 13 of the last 15
meetings between the
pair, and was in stunning
form to finally hold
the Coupe des Mousquetaires
aloft. World number
one Novak Djokovic
beat Britain’s Andy Murray
to win his first French
Open title and complete
the career Grand Slam.
The Serb, 29, won 3-6 6-1
6-2 6-4 to win his 12th
major title and become
the first man since Rod
Laver in 1969 to hold all
four Grand Slams at once.
Murray had hoped to secure
the third leg of his
own career Slam, having
already won Wimbledon
and the US Open. The
Scot, 29, was Britain’s
first male finalist in Paris
since 1937. Second seed
Murray played superbly
to win the first set but
could not convert a break
point early in the second,
and Djokovic took
control to win in three
hours.
He becomes only the
eighth man in history to
have won all four of the
sport’s major singles
prizes - and could yet
match Laver’s achievement
of winning all
four in a calendar year.
Djokovic fell back on
the clay in delight and
relief after requiring
two breaks of serve and
four match points in a
desperately tense end
to the final. With threetime
champion Gustavo
Kuerten watching from
the stands, Djokovic then
emulated the Brazilian
by drawing a heart in
the clay with his racquet.
Murray, who has now lost
five Grand Slam finals to
Djokovic, had looked capable
of causing an upset
with an aggressive display
in the opening set.
However, Djokovic
turned the match
around early in the
second set and Murray,
who had played five
hours’ more tennis in
reaching the final, could
not keep pace. Djokovic
looked determined to
make up for losing in
three previous Paris finals
when he broke the
Murray serve to love
with a brilliant opening
game, but the nerves
All this, because it
was fellow 74kg wrestler
Narsingh Yadav who
clinched the berth for
the India in the category
were soon apparent.
A beautiful lob saw
Murray hit straight back
in game two and, playing
aggressively at every
opportunity, he powered
into a 4-1 lead as Djokovic
misfired with his forehand.
Murray was hoping
to emulate Fred Perry’s
French Open victory of
1936. After a generous
overrule that drew boos
from a crowd seemingly
backing Djokovic - and
some stunning defense
earned the Scot a break
point at the start of the
second set.
Djokovic needed to
turn the tide and he did
so with a smash, before
grabbing the lead when
Murray double-faulted
at break point down. The
Serb then began to dictate
with his backhand,
firing a winner down the
line for a decisive second
break as Murray’s firstserve
percentage slipped
by finishing third in the
World Championship in
Las Vegas last year. Sushil
on his part had been injured
and could not make
the journey. However
once Narsingh did so, no
other Indian was allowed
to participate in Olympic
qualifiers in the category.
Since then, Narsingh
has been staking his
claim for the berth and
the Wrestling Federation
of India too is supporting
the stance of the
wrestler who booked the
spot. However, Sushil’s
argument is that since he
was injured at the time,
he should now at least
be allowed a trial against
Narsingh - to see who
goes to Rio.
He may be 33 and having
nursed an injury for a
major part of the qualifying
period for Rio, but Sushil
Kumar is also the only
Indian sportsperson to
win two individual medals
at the Olympics. In all
sports, just not wrestling.
below the 50% mark.
Djokovic continued to
press, setting up break
points at 1-1 in the third
set with a forehand winner
and watching as
Murray dropped a volley
into the net with the
court gaping. The crowd
chanted “Nole! Nole!” as
the world number one
finally regained the lead
he had surrendered after
the opening game of
the match, and he broke
again with a terrific sliding
winner on his way to
a two-sets-to-one lead.
With a 5-2 lead in the
fourth set, and his friends
and supporters preparing
to celebrate in the
stands, Djokovic suffered
a tortuous few minutes
as Murray refused to give
up. The Briton got one
of the breaks back and
saved two match points,
before finally netting a
backhand as Djokovic
clinched a historic win.
VENEZUELA DEFEATED
JAMAICA IN A 1-0 MATCH
In a physical Copa
America Centenario clash
here Sunday that saw
the Reggae Boyz reduced
to 10 men while Coach
Winfried Schaefer was
expelled from the dugout.
Jamaica, riding high after
a shock friendly victory
over Copa America champions
Chile in a warm-up
last week, was left ruing a
string of missed chances
against their South American
Group C rivals. “We
had a couple of chances
and didn’t take them, they
got one chance and they
took it, and that was the
difference in the game today,”
said Jamaica’s assistant
coach Miguel Coley,
appearing at the postmatch
press conference
instead of the dismissed
Schaefer.
In blazing hot sunshine
at Chicago’s famous Soldier
Field Stadium, Jamaica
made life difficult for
themselves with Rodolph
Austin sent off midway
through the first half for
a rash challenge on Tomas
Rincon. By that stage
Jamaica were already
trailing 1-0 after a sloppy
clearance from Michael
Hector gifted possession
to Venezuela around 30
yards from goal. A swift
series of one-touch passes
culminated with Josef
Martinez being played
into space, and the Torino
striker duly tucked away
a low finish beneath the
advancing Andre Blake to
make it 1-0 after 16 minutes.
Jamaica had their
chances to score, with Je-
Vaughn Watson heading
against the cross bar from
Garath McLeary’s corner
after only 11 minutes. The
circumstances surrounding
the apparent expulsion
of Jamaica’s veteran
German coach Schaefer
remained unclear.
He was seen in a
lengthy discussion with
the match officials just
before the start of the
second half before being
ordered to watch the
remainder of the game
from the stands. Although
down to 10 men, Jamaica
continued to create
chances, Michael Hector
clipping the outside of the
post on 49 minutes with
a fine curling shot from
distance.
Venezuela almost doubled
their lead in the 70th
minute only for Wilker
Angel’s powerful diving
header to be parried away
by Blake. Jamaica had
started the game without
Leicester City star Wes
Morgan, with reports in
Kingston quoting Schaefer
as saying he was still
tired from celebrating the
Foxes’ fairytale Premier
League triumph. Morgan
however appeared from
the bench in the 40th
minute, replacing the injured
Kemar Lawrence.
“It’s always hard when
you go a man down but I
think it shows our team
spirit that we didn’t concede
another goal and we
kept going and created
chances,” Jamaica’s English-born
forward Giles
Barnes said.
“We gave blood sweat
and tears but unfortunately
we didn’t hit the
back of the net.
WASIM AKRAM HAS HIS ‘SCENT’ OUT
The king of swing
WasimAkram turned into
a king of colognes on his
50th birthday.
To honour his achievement
for being the highest
wicket taker in the
test cricket for Pakistan,
J. Fragrances collaborated
with the cricket legend
and launched a cologne,
named ‘414 Scent
of Sultan. Describing the
reason behind the name,
WasimAkram is the highest
wicket taker in test
cricket for Pakistan, having
taken 414 wickets in
104 matches and hence
the name of the cologne.
Former captain Muhammad
Yousuf says
Pakistan batsmen will
be tested on the upcoming
England tour since
they have played only in
friendly conditions in the
UAE in the last few years.
In the latest Test rankings
issued by the ICC, Pakistan
is placed third behind
Australia and India after a
series of convincing performances
in Dubai, Abu
Dhabi and Sharjah. These
are venues where they
have been forced to play
their home series since
militants attacked the Sri
Lankan team in Lahore in
March, 2009.
“What worries me is
that Pakistan’s test cricket
has mainly been restricted
to the UAE for the last
few years and in England
they have a lot at stake
to guard their excellent
test record,” Yousuf said.
The 41-year old said the
conditions in UAE and England
are totally different
and the Pakistani batsmen
would be severely
tested in English conditions
against an in-form
English bowling attack.
“It is going to be a
tough tour for us and our
first priority should be to
ensure we don’t fold up
like Sri Lanka has done in
England,” he said. Yousuf
said that Pakistan had the
advantage of having more
experienced batsmen and
more potent bowlers.
Because Younis, Misbah,
Azhar and Asad Shafiq all
have plenty of experience
but the key will be how
quickly they adjust to the
English conditions and
pitches,” he said. Yousuf,
who played 90 Tests and
288 one-day internationals
said that Pakistani
batsmen had also struggled
in England in the past
but always, put up a fight.
“The 2010 tour I think
was our worst in England
in many years and this
team will be challenged
to ensure they perform
better and the tour is not
a repetition of 2010,” he
added.
He noted that even the
top Indian batmen had
struggled in England on
their last tour because of
the top skills of the English
bowlers on conducive
pitches. “If Pakistan
does well in England it
would have shown everyone
that it is a top test
side,” Yousuf added. But
he noted that nowadays
most test teams were restricted
to performing
well at home.
Yousuf said he was not
aware what agreement
the Pakistan board had
with Mickey Arthur but
before signing him they
should have ensured he
joined the team on time.
Pakistan fast bowler
Mohammad Amir has
been picked for the Test
series in England, his
first appearance in a Test
squad since his return to
international cricket after
a five-year suspension for
spot-fixing in September
last year. He had made a
comeback to Pakistan’s
limited-overs’ squads earlier
this year.
With the team set to
depart on June 18, the
PCB is hopeful that Amir
will be granted a visa by
next week. His application
was also supported by the
ECB. There were concerns
over Amir being granted
a UK visa, after the bowler
- along with Mohammad
Asif and Salman Butt
- was court for his role
in the 2010 spot-fixing
scandal in the controversial
Lord’s Test against
England, and was given a
ENGLAND TOURS A MILE STONE FOR PAKISTAN
six-month jail sentence,
half of which he served
at the Portland Young Offenders
Institution in Dorset.
Legspinner Yasir Shah
was picked for his first
international series after
the end of his doping ban
in March. The bowler had
missed Pakistan’s tour to
New Zealand, the Asia Cup
T20 and the World T20 after
he was given a threemonth
suspension by the
ICC. Yasir was provisionally
suspended under the
ICC’s Anti-Doping Code in
December after he tested
positive for a banned substance,
chlortalidone, and
a three-month suspension
was given after he pleaded
guilty to breaching the
code. The penalty, which
was backdated to December,
ended on March
27. The legspinner, however,
did suffer an injury
scare last month, when he
missed the fitness camp
in Abbottabad after aggravating
an old knee injury.
Zulfiqar Babar was
the other spinner named
in the squad. Pakistan will
undergo a conditioning
camp in Hampshire and
will play two tour matches
- against Somerset
and Sussex - before the
first Test at Lord’s, which
starts from July 14. They
will play another tour
match, against Worcestershire,
between the second
and third Tests at Old
Trafford and Edgbaston,
respectively. The fourth
Test will be played at The
Oval from August 11.
Squad: Mohammad
AVIATION MINISTRY TO
RECONSTRUCT TICKET NORMS
The Civil Aviation Ministry
may soon announce new
norms for ticket cancellation,
baggage and denied
boarding, amid the increasing
number of complaints
on these issues.
The decision also comes
after domestic air passengers’
body Air Passengers
Association of India
(APAI) had written to the
Civil Aviation Ministry and
Aviation Regulator DGCA
to address these ongoing
issues including sufficient
compensation to fliers in
the eventuality of their
flight getting cancelled or
delayed.
At present passengers
gets between Rs 2,000-
4,000 depending upon the
duration of the delay.
In the case of denied
boarding, the compensation
ranges in the same
amount.”We are revisiting
regulations concerning
these issues,” a senior official
said.
The reconstructed norms
are expected to be made
public soon, the official
added.
Significantly, after domestic
airlines including the
largest airline by market
share IndiGo and Government-run
Air India hiked
its cancellation charges,
Directorate General of Civil
Aviation had sought an
explanation from the carriers
over the issue.
“We have been trying to
compare (ticket cancellation
charges) with international
trends and
like that... It (analysis of
cancellation charges) will
take more time,” DGCA
chief M Sathiyavathy had
said last month.
Budget carrier IndiGo
had in April done away
with the slab system for
charging ticket cancellation
fee and made it uniform
at Rs 2,250. National
carrier Air India too had
in February drifted a hike
of Rs 500 for cancelling its
flight tickets, which now
stands at Rs 2,000 per
ticket.
“We certainly welcome
the (proposed) move. But
at the same time we want
a fool proof system in
place. If a passenger misses
his connecting flight he
should also be compensated,”
D Sudhakara Reddy of
APAI said.
According to DGCA, more
than two-thirds of the airline
flights in April were
cancelled due to technical
and operational reasons.
As a result a total of 46,833
passengers were affected
due to flight cancellations,
delays and denied boarding,
involving a compensation
of Rs 1.33crore in
April this year.
$4.9MN CASHED IN FOR THE NUMBER 1
A car registration plate
bearing just the number
1 fetched USD 4.9 million
at an auction in the United
Arab Emirates, sources
said.
The winning bidder, an
Emirati businessman ArifAhmed
al-Zarouni, told
Local media”My ambition
is always to be number
one.”
His bid was 18 times the
initial price but not the
highest sum that has been
paid for a collector’s registration
plate in the UAEcomparatively.
In 2008, USD 14.2 million
was paid at auction for the
number one plate of the
richest of the UAE’s seven
emirates in Abu Dhabi.
Zarouni’s plate is for Sharjah,
the third-richest emirate.
Sixty sought-after plates
were up for sale at the
auction event. The most
popular numbers were
12, 22, 50, 100, 333, 777,
1000, 2016, 2020 and
99999. The auction made
a total sale of USD 13.6
million.
DRONES ERA TO FLASH $11BN BY 2025
China’s growing drone
industry may see its
market value leap to
USD 11 billion by 2025,
according to a leading
professional market
research company.
At the end of 2025,
the unmanned aerial
vehicles will be applied
largely in aerial
photo shooting, farm
chemical spraying and
forest protection, as
well as security service,
sources quoted
the research paper of
iResearch consultancy
firm.
The research paper
estimated that China’s
robust and fast developing
drone industry’s
market value is likely
to reach 75 billion
yuan (USD 11.54 billion)
by 2025.
The report calculated
that the nation’s civilian
drone market had
grown by more than 50
per cent over the past
years, with its product
portfolio becoming increasingly
diversified.
Shenzhen-based technology
firm DJI, a leading
manufacturer of
commercial and recreational
drones for aerial
photography and
videography, accounts
for almost 70 per cent
of the market share
worldwide, with Europe
and North America
its biggest customers.
The paper also outlined
several uncertainties
and challenges
facing the industry
such as inadequate
regulations of low-altitude
flying zones in
China and narrow applications
of drones.
Technologies need to
be updated to make
drone products more
durable and reliable
with safety regulations
in place.
LABOUR CAMPS COMPRISE 60%
OF QATAR`S POPULATION
According to census
figures from April 2015,
highlighting the issue of
the emirate’s huge migrant
workforce,around 60 per
cent of Qatar’s 2.4 million
population lives in what
the government calls “labour
camps”.
The figures from the
Ministry of Development
Planning and Statistics
(MDPS) revealed that 1.4
million people live in what
the department officially
designates as “labour
camps”.
At the time of the survey,
the official population was
2.4 million.
That works at just over
58 per cent of the country’s
population and the overwhelming
majority 1.34
million were male, the statistics
found.
Since the census, Qatar’s
population has grown further
to about 2.5 million.
The accommodation of
migrant labourers working
on Qatar’s numerous infrastructure
projects has long
been a debatable issue.
Qatar, which will be
hosting the football World
Cup in 2022, has been condemned
by human rights
groups, including Amnesty
International, for providing
“squalid and cramped accommodation”
for its large
migrant workforce.
Last week, 11 people
were killed and 12 injured
when a fire ripped through
a camp housing labourers
working on a tourism project
in the southwest of the
country.
Qatar has responded to
the criticism by building
new workers’ housing complexes,
including the USD
825 million “Labour City”
south of the capital Doha,
which incorporates shops,
cinemas and a cricket stadium.
The complex can house
up to 70,000 foreign workers
and is one of seven
workers’ “cities” being developed
which will accommodate
almost 260,000
people in total.
The population of gasrich
Qatar has soared over
the past three decades as
it has imported a huge migrant
workforce to develop
its infrastructure. In 1986,
just 373,000 people lived in
the emiratecomparatively.
KG BASIN EXPECTING RS 1 L CR INVESTMENT
IN THE NEAR FUTURE: MINISTER FOR
PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS
Stating that Krishna-Godavari
Basin will become
the hub of oil and gas reserves
in the country in
the coming years, Minister
of State for Petroleum and
Natural GasDharmendraPradhan
today said KG
Basin is likely to attract
new investment of Rs 1
lakh crore.
“Along with investments
from ONGC, GSPC and RIL,
from this financial year to
the next 5-7 financial years,
I am visualising new investment
of Rs 1 lakh crore
in Krishna-Godavari Basin,
creating new employment
and setting up downstream
industry,” Pradhan told reporters
here.
“India’s east coast, particularly
Krishna-Godavari
Basin has rich hydrocarbon
deposits. Though there is a
difference when compared
to Mumbai High, where
oil and gas is available at a
depth of 100 to 200 meters
whereas in east coast, the
same is available at a depth
of 2,000 to 3,000 meters,”
he pointed out.
Hence, there is lot of differentiation
over production
costs and technology
between Mumbai and the
east coast, he said.
“Yesterday, I reviewed
ONGC wells and some are
dug up to 5,000 meters
depth; the temperature is
480 degree Celsius.
KG basin is amongst the
five most challenging oil
fields in the world,” he said.
Though there is a need
for commercially viable
technology to tap it, he further
said ‘gas hydrates’ resources
finding have been
made in the KG Basin.
“We need to invest in
technology for tapping
them (gas hydrates). Based
on preliminary estimates of
scientists, if we are able to
start production of gas hydrates,
this will add a new
dimension to India’s economy.”
“In the coming years,
KG Basin is set to become
the new hub of oil and gas
reserves in the country,” he
said.
“Based on the prevalent
practice on policy management,
gas production
(in the KG Basin) was a big
challenge and hence, we
brought out a new pricing
and marketing mechanism.
Though ONGC had oil
and gas fields since 2000
in KG basin, there was no
production because it was a
challenging field and there
was no price viability for it,”
the minister added.
LIFESTYLE
6 EXPENSES THAT DIDN’T
EXIST 5 YEARS AGO FOR PARENTING
Expenses today are
very different from what
they were a few years ago.
This extends to parenting
as well. Children born in
the 2000’s need things
you could not even dream
of at that age.
If you are a young parent
or soon to become one,
you might want to plan for
a few expenses that didn’t
really exist when you were
a child.
Here are a few such
new age parenting related
expenses:
#1. Day Care
The cost: Starts at Rs.
2,000 per month (up to Rs.
10,000 per month)
Nuclear families usually
need dual income, which
means that both parents
must be working to maintain
a healthy lifestyle.
Working mothers have no
option but to enroll their
child into a day care service
or a creche, during
working hours. Day care
centers cost Rs. 5,000 per
month, on an average.
#2. Play Schools
The cost: Rs 10,000 – Rs
20,000 per month
Once the child is 2-3 years
of age, the parents need
to start looking for a playschool.
Playschools these
days are not merely alphabet-teaching
centers. They
employ specially trained
pre-school educators and
provide a safe environment
for kids to thrive in.
These services come at a
cost as high as Rs. 1 lakh
per year! In fact, some
studies suggest that educating
a pre-schooler
these days is far more expensive
than sending your
teenager for higher education.
#3. Devices for children
The cost: From Rs 10,000
– Rs 50,000 per year
Your little one grows up
and becomes curious
about the world. As a preteen,
he or she is exposed
to advanced gadgets,
which you could not even
dream of as a child of the
70’s or 80’s.
There is a Kindle for a storybook,
an iPod for music,
and Play Stations instead
of Carom. Certainly these
fancy devices come at a
high price, which somehow
have become unavoidable
expenses these
days.
#4. Summer Camps
The cost: Rs 12,000 and
upwards per month depending
on age of the child
Devices accompany your
child when at school, but
even his holidays are not
his anymore. Gone are the
days when summers were
just about a vacation to
the hometown and staying
with grandparents.
Months before summer
holidays, parents start
looking for summer
camps for their preteens.
Summer camps can cost
up to Rs. 3,000 per week.
They offer diverse activities
such as creative writing,
fun projects, science
expeditions, art & craft,
music lessons, and storytelling
to name a few.
If your child can learn useful
skills over the summer
then why not? But it does
come with a significant
price tag.
#5. Activity Classes
The cost:Can be as low as
Rs 1,000 a month to as
high as Rs 10,000 a month.
Varies with age and skill.
Learning doesn’t stop
with school classes. These
days an activity class for
specific skills is a must for
most children. These can
be dance or martial arts
classes or even something
unique like calligraphy.
These classes can be relatively
cheap or expensive
depending on the activity,
the teacher, the batch size,
the age of the children,
and even the location.
#6. Academic Coaching
The cost: Rs. 2,000 to
Rs. 12,000 per month
Moreover, a high school
student would also want
coaching classes to clear
difficult competitive exams.
Or home tuitions to
pass the 12th grade math
paper.
Other than unavoidable
expenses, your teen may
also ask for fancy branded
clothes, guitar lessons on
the weekend, aerobics or
swimming classes, driving
lessons, you name it!
These are the expected
costs of raising a child in
the 21st century, and this
excludes healthcare bills,
education loans (in case
your child wishes to study
abroad) etc.
The Learning; It helps
a lot to plan your finances
keeping in mind the rising
costs of being a parent.

JACK BLACK ‘KILLED’ ON TWITTER
Jack Black was the victim of
a hoax by a hacker who cracked
into the Twitter account of Goosebumps,
Black’s band.
Early morning, a shocking
tweet which read“I’m sad to officially
announce the death of
Jack Black at the age of 46, rest in
peace brother,” was
posted.
Shortly thereafter,
a second tweet
which simply read
“#RipJackBlack”
was posted.
And to make sure
it seemed super believable,
the hacker
sent a third tweet:
“It is with a heavy
heart I am to announce
that Jack
Black passed away
last night at 3:37am.
The cause of death
is yet unknown.”
After a number
of media outlets
reported the alleged death, the
criminal finally came clean.
“Calm down guys! It’s just a
prank bro, look there’s the camera,”
he or she wrote, adding, “The
Legend is still alive, it is ok guys
:)”
And then, unbelievably, he took
a shot at self-promotion.
“While you are all on Twitter,
you should all follow me @Ruthless”
Post this the account has been
suspended by Twitter.
Tenacious D has resumed control
of the account and the death
tweets have been deleted. The
band sent a message clarifying
that the whole trial was nothing
but a terribly unfunny hoax.
“WE had our Twitter account
hacked. We can assure you that
Jack is ALIVE and WELL and
that this was a sick ‘prank,’” they
tweeted.
much in a while...great game great cause
great fun...,” the actor tweeted.
KIRAN RAO LODGES
COMPLAINT AGAINST
FACEBOOK IMPERSONATOR
Twentieth Century Fox has apologized for a billboard ad that features
Jennifer Lawrence’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” character Mystique
being strangled.
The billboard has been disapproved by some who are offended by
the imagery of Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse choking Mystique. Actress
and filmmaker Rose McGowan says there’s “a major problem when
the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against
HEARD CLAIMS FALSE ALLEGATIONS
The actress says comedian Doug Stanhope
and others defamed her in an article claiming
she was threatening to lie about Depp.
The 30-year-old actress is seeking the
“maximum possible jury award”, which she
plans to donate to a domestic violence shelter
in Arizona, according to her lawyer.
Heard says in court documents that Doug
Stanhope and 20 other unnamed defendants
“orchestrated a plot” to write an article published
on TheWrap.com which “falsely accuses”
her of “blackmail and other criminal behaviour
towards her husband”.
The article, entitled “Johnny Depp is being
blackmailed by Amber Heard – here`s how
I know”, was written by Stanhope two days
after Heard was granted a restraining order
against Depp, whom she is seeking to get a divorce
from.
Stanhope and Depp being close friends, in
the article, he wrote that Heard was “threatening
to lie about (Depp) publicly in any and
every possible duplicitous way if he
didn’t agree to her terms”.
In court papers, Heard described
the article as “completely false and
highly defamatory”, adding that they
had “caused and will continue to
cause her tremendous harm”.
She added that the accusations
were part of a “calculated publicity
campaign to smear (her) for having
the temerity to file for divorce”.
Stanhope is yet to respond to the
lawsuit. In her restraining order application,
Heard accused Depp of
hitting and kicking her on numerous
occasions, as well as throwing things
at her.
women is a way to market a film.”
Depp has denied allegations of
abusing Heard.His lawyer Laura Wasser
said in court documents related to
the restraining order that Heard “is attempting
to secure a premature financial resolution
In a statement, Fox says that in highlighting the villainy of Apocalypse,
“we didn’t immediately realize the upsetting connotation of this
image in print form.”
The studio apologized and says it’s removing promotional materials
with the image. Fox adds that it “would never condone violence
against women.”
by alleging abuse”.Heard and Depp married in
February 2015 and she filed for divorce on 23
May 2016.
Kiran Rao, film Director and wife of
Aamir Khan, has lodged a complaint with
the Cyber Crime police at Bandra Kurla
Complex against an unidentified person,
who has created a fake Facebook account
of her and impersonating her on social
media. Rao, 42, registered the complaint
as soon as she was notified of the actions
and said that the impersonator has uploaded
her picture on Facebook and is
also chatting with her friends and family
members, police said. A case has been
registered in this connection and probe
initiated, they said, refusing to divulge
further details.
