BENGALURU WILL GET ITS SECOND
MEDICAL COLLEGE SOON
Bengaluru will get its
second medical college
in Bowring and Lady
Curzon Hospital in Shivajinagar
by 2018 in the
same campus.
The new budget has
been estimated for about
Rs. 218 crore. Thus the
Bowring and Lady Curzon
Medical College will
add 150 MBBS seats to
the government quota.
The medical education
department has
given its go-ahead. Final
approval is awaited from
the government to float
the tender and clear the
revised estimate.
Medical
education
minister Sharan
Prakash
Patil told reporters,
“The
building will
come up on
the Bowring
hospital premises as a
10-acre plot is enough
as per Medical Council of
India guidelines.”
The project includes
establishing a nursing
college with 17 paramedical
courses. The
government aims at having
one medical college
in each district.
In 2016-
17, about 450
more seats
will be added
through
government
medical colleges
that
have come up
at Madikeri, Karwar and
Chamarajanagar.
The college is known
for its teachings and other
practical experiments.
Dr KS Manjunath, special
officer, Bowring and
Lady Curzon Hospital,
said the college would
stand out for its teaching.
He also said that the
medical colleges in so
many places only manufactured
doctors. They
did not impart skills and
charecters in them. They
wanted to repair that
gap in their college.
It will also focus on
family medicine, a specialty
relating to comprehensive
healthcare
for people of all ages.
“We want to revive the
concept of family physicians,
who can detect
many conditions before
they get complicated,”
DrManjunath said.
METRO STATION VANDALIZED BY MLA
KRISHNAPA’S SUPPORTERS
BS Yeddyurappa
walks with the organisers
and participants
of Yoga Walk-A-Thon on
Sunday. The event was
Taking the point of
their leader was not considered
for a minister’s
post, the supporters of
MLA M. Krishnapa attempted
to vandalise
the metro station at Vijayanagar
on Sunday.
The MLA, representing
Vijayanagar constituency
was overlooked
for a minister’s post in
the ongoing reshuffle in
the state. Angered over
this, about 20-
30 supporters
of Krishnappa
entered the
Vijayanagar
metro station
around 10 am
in the morning
and attempted
to stand on the
railway tracks
threatening to
stop train services
in protest.
Speaking to
the reporters,
the Managing Director,
Pradeep Singh Kharola
said that they could not
enter into the track and
they were stopped. He
further said, “Our security
guards were alert
and they stopped them
in time.” However as the
precautionary measure
the BMRCL officials had
to switch of the power
on the track. The trains
were stopped wherever
they were for about 10-
15 minutes.
The BMRCL has collected
CCTV footage for
evidence. Even though at
the moment, a complaint
has not yet been registered,
metro officials
would file a complaint
against the vandals by
submitting the evidence
to the police, Kharola
added.
The culprits stabbed
the man multiple times
BENGALURU IS GETTING ITS GREEN BACK
After coming across
the high temperature in
the month of April and
May, the city is getting
its green back. Bengaluru
met the high temperature
of 39 degree during
this summer. People saw
the trees and the plants
getting dried up in the
neighbourhood and on
the parks.
But getting a resanable
amount of rain for
the past one and half
month the city is getting
its green back. The
citizens groups in Indiranagar,
Whitefield,
Somasundarapalya and
HSR Layout are getting
together to protect existing
trees and plant new
ones.
In the last two
months, around 300
The family of five-year
old child named Lakshay
P. alleged medical negligence
by the Mallya Hospital
in Bengaluru after
the kid went into coma
during his fingers surgery.
Reportedly, Lakshay
had hurt his fingers while
playing at his classroom
desk on June 10. It has
been more than a week
partially grown trees
have been planted in different
neighbourhoods
in HSR Layout. A hundred
saplings have been
planted in Whitefield
and 150 in three areas of
Indiranagar.
Kavitha Reddy from
the HasiruMitra an association
of volunteers in
suburbs of HSR Layout
and Somasundarapalya
said that they were
planting two old trees
across the area. They
have planed 3,000 trees
by the end of the December.
They also approached
house owners
to plant trees in the city.
Ms. Reddy also added
that they were making
awareness drives on
weekends.
Most of the citizens in
the city talk about the
savings of the tree. But
many say that it would
be rather better to save
the existing tree from
cutting them down than
planting a new tree. In
April, a fully-grown African
Tulip tree had been
cut down allegedly by
a local civic official. “It
was a wake-up call to
many people who realised
that the big, shady
trees in the neighbourhood
were quickly disappearing,”
says Praveen
of, I Change Indiranagar,
a group which recently
organised a tree-planting
drive. “Around 150
saplings were planted
around two weeks ago.
people are co-operative,
CHILD GOES INTO COMA DUE TO
DOCTOR’s NEGLIGENCE
since then that the boy is
in coma.
“I got a call from my
son’s school on June 10
saying that my son has
hurt his fingers. The
school authorities asked
me to come to the Mallya
Hospital as the condition
of his two fingers was serious.
When I went to the
hospital, I saw his two
fingers were damaged,”
the victim’s father Purushottam
said.
He said one of the lady
doctors at the hospital
told him that one of the
fingers of the child needed
to be operated, while
plastic surgery was required
for the other finger.
“The hospital authorities
demanded Rs.
60,000 and said the surgery
needs to be done in
six hours. I didn’t think
much about the money
and deposited Rs. 25,
000. Before the surgery,
my son was fine and was
playing games,’ he added.
Purushottam said after
few hours of the surgery,
the doctor told him
make space for parking,”
said Praveen, adding
that it was not uncommon
for people to throw
acid or mercury on a
healthy tree, to make it
seem unhealthy enough
to get permission to fell
it.
BBMP Tree Officer
(South) RanganathSwamy
explained
that once an application
is received, the tree officer
usually goes and
inspects the tree and decides
whether it should
be felled or not. Experts
and civic officials say
the drives must be conducted
scientifically.
In Whitefield, citizens
have been conducting
tree-planting drives in
conjunction with the
BBMP.
that oxygen was not supplied
to Lakshay, which
led to a damage in his
heart and lungs.
“We were shocked to
hear this. The doctors
said Lakshay had some
heart problem.We said
he was fine. The doctors
forced us to accept that
our child had some heart
problem even before
he was admitted into
the hospital. Later on,
the hospital authorities
asked us to shift my son
to the Manipal Hospital,”
Purushottam said.
“It has been nine days
and he is still in coma.
The Mallya Hospital
didn’t call or even ask
about my son,” he added.
SANJEEV TEACHES HOW TO KEEP
SNAKES AWAY FROM ENTERING HOME
There are many specialists
in the city starting
from IT sector to
civil sector. But there is
another specialist who
catches snake in the city.
The man named Sanjeecv
gets 30 to 40 calls
every day from different
areas in the city. Mostly,
he lives in Whitefield.
People in Whitefield
Rising organized a workshop
on what to do when
they find a snake in their
house. There were a
huge crowd turned up
for the answer because
most of them have come
across this incident.
BBMP snake expert Sanjeev
addressed the gathering
about three hour
long session on Saturday.
Sanjeev did send the
crowed with the satisfactory
answer. He has
11 years of experience
in the field.
“Primarily, block the
entry points for snakes,
such as hanging branches,
pipes and open garbage
bins. Denying food
and shelter are the subsequent
steps. Which
means manage garbage
in a way that reduces
rats in the house,” he
said.
Pointing out that only
3% of the population
would think about rescuing
the snake and not
whack it the moment it
is spotted in the house,
he said that there needed
to be personal practices
in one’s lifestyle to
co-exist with snakes.
Just like
every other
issues
that Bengaluru
faces,
Sanjeev attributed
urbanization
as the reason
for the
increasing
number of snakes in the
city. He said, “How far
can we push them away
from their home if the
city is expanding day by
day?”
PradipThaker, volunteer
of Whitefield Rising
said that his neighborhood
reports close to ten
cases daily, as there are
plenty of vacant spaces
in the neighbourhood.
Sanjeev also pointed
that killing one snake
that lands up in your
house does not guarantee
that a second one will
not crawl into the house
the very next day, as long
as rats are not kept at
bay. He reasoned that
while residents can resort
to measures to curb
snakes from entering
their homes, they cannot
claim their gardens to be
their living space.
MEGA CELEBRATION IN HONOUR OF NAADA BRAMHA
writer and music composer
Hamsalekha and
MLA Gopalaiah flagged
off a campaign for ‘Hamsothsava’
Kanteerava Studios
to Dr. Rajkumar auditorium
in Rajajinagar.
When it comes to investments,
people invest in gold,
real estate or fixed deposits,
but hardly think about mutual
funds.
“In India, only less than 30
Mutual Funds are a great
an aim to make the language
that there are over 8,000 funds,
were vocal about their
disappointment with
his team arrested Srikanth
Police had earlier
by burning tyres, damaging
BMTC busses and
blocking the roads demanding
LOKAYUKTA SEARCHES 10 AD FIRMS
The fight against illegal
hoardings has got a shot in
the arm: the Lokayukta police
on Saturday conducted
searches on the office premises
of 10 Ad firms.
A senior Lokayukta police
official said the searches
yielded documents allegedly
indicating the ad agencies
conniving with Bruhat Bengaluru
MahanagaraPalike
(BBMP) officials to put up
illegal hoardings as well as
multiple hoardings with a
single licence. “In at least five
firms, we recovered accounts
and other details pointing
towards the payments made
to BBMP officials,” the official
said, adding that searches on
other agencies would follow.
An FIR on illegal hoardings
was filed a year ago, but
the case was taken up only
recently after the High Court
asked the Lokayukta police to
probe all pending cases.
A Lokyayukta official said
the firms had been selected
based on information received
from BBMP Revenue
officers and the eight reports
by the former Assistant Commissioner,
Advertisements,
K. Mathai, who was recently
transferred.
RTI activist Saidatta was
the complainant in the case
before Upalokayukta Subhash
B. Adi in 2015 which
was later handed over to the
city wing of the Lokayukta
police. While earlier estimates
had pegged the loss of
revenue because of illegal ads
at Rs. 800 crore, Mr.Mathai’s
reports peg it at a whopping
Rs. 2,000 crore.
RETORTS MALLYA AFTER
BOOK EVENT ROW
Vijay Mallya, declared
a announced offender
inside a money washing
situation, on Sunday
said he was not a “gate
crasher” suggesting that
he was invited to the
book launch event here
which was also attended
by the Indian High Commissioner.
Indian High Commissioner
Navtej Sarna’s
presence at the event on
Thursday where Mallya
was spotted sparked a
row following which External
Affairs Ministry
yesterday issued a clarification
that Mallya was
not on the list of invitees
of the event organiser.
Following the uproar
within the issue, the
MEA had stated there
have been two obvious
tweeted on Sunday, responding
to the claims
that he was not among
the invitees.

Scion of Mysuru
Motivates People
to Volunteer for
Teaching
Yaduveer Krishnadatta
Chamaraja Wadiyar, the
scion of the Royal Family
of Mysuru donned the
mantle of a teacher for a
day, to generate awareness
and motivate others
to take to the noble profession
of teaching. “There
is a lack of volunteers in
teaching. Schools, note
books, grounds, everything
is there but there are not
enough teachers. To educate
the children, we need
teachers, so if people volunteer
and this issue gains
publicity, then more people
would volunteer for teaching,”
said Wadiyar.
Two Elderly Women
Murdered in Thane
Two elderly women
were allegedly murdered
by unidentified miscreants
in Kalyan city of the district
Thane, police said on
Sunday. The duo, identified
as Kamlabai Dudhkar
(56) and her sister-in-law
Leelabai Dudhkar (65),
were found dead in their
house at Khadegolavali locality
on Saturday night,
police PRO Sukhada Narkar
to light when the victims’
relative reached their residence.
The main door of
the house was ajar, and the
visitor found them lying in
a pool of blood, she said.
The house was found in a
disorderly state, and things
were laying strewn, raising
suspicion of robbery, she
said. The duo owned many
properties, the PRO said,
adding, the murder might
be a result of a possible
property dispute. Police is
investigating all possible
angles, she said.
Rogue Elephant in
Madukkarai Forest
Captured
A rogue elephant which
had been creating a menace
for the last one year in Madukkarai
forest range here,
killing at least three persons,
was tranquilised and
captured early on Sunday.
District Forest Officer in
charge Periyasamy said the
‘Mission Madukkarai Maharaj’
operation to translocate
the elephant by tranquilising
it officially began
on Saturday. The elephant,
which used to visit Madukkarai
area once a week, had
not been seen since June 8,
the day the Principal Chief
Conservator of Forests,
ordered its translocation,
bowing to pressure from
public, farmers and politicians
alike.Periyasamy said
four kumkis (trained and
tamed elephants) had been
brought in from different
camps in Tamil Nadu in the
Complaint against
Essar forwarded to
Home Ministry
Complaint into the alleged
tapping of telephone
conversations of some top
industrialists and politicians
by the Essar Group has been
forwarded to Home Ministry
for “appropriate action”.
The complaint was made to
the Prime Minister’s Office
(PMO) by lawyer Suren Uppal
alleging that the Essar
Group had ordered its former
security chief Albasit
Khan to tap into its business
rivals’ telephone conversations.
“Complaint regarding
Essar leaks has been forwarded
to Home Ministry
for appropriate action,” official
sources said. The complaint
includes call logs for
purported conversations of
Mukesh and Anil Ambani
with Directors/ Promoters
of the two companies and
other senior officials as well
as conversations that show
how business rivals reach
out to politicians to seek
favours.
CONFLICTING POLICIES WITH GOVT. RE-
SPONSIBLE FOR RAJAN’S EXIT: CONGRESS
Dubbing Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) Governor
Raghuram Rajan’s
decision not to continue
with his current post after
the end of his tenure
in September as ‘unfortunate’,
the Congress on
Sunday said it was due
to the conflicting policies
with the Bharatiya
Janata Party-led NDA
Government at the Centre.
“The government, finance
ministry and the
Prime Minister’s Office
proposed changes in
many policies to appease
some industrialists.
The RBI Governor
was not happy with this.
On the government’s
behalf, Subramanian
Swamy had written letters
as well. I think, hurt
by this, Raghuram Rajan
decided to work for
the coming few months,
Congress leader Pramod
Tiwari told the media.
Escalating his attack
on the Centre, Tiwari
described its economic
and foreign policy as a
‘lost wanderer’.
“In 2014, the debts
of the industrialists
were rescheduled. Its
after-effects are evident
even today. So, there
was a conflict between
Rajan as a Governor and
the government. The
government’s policies
were for the industrialists,
while Rajan was
focusing on the policies
for the nation,” he added.
Tiwari said BJP leader
Subramanian Swamy,
who took sides of the industrialists,
had established
the Janata Party,
in which liquor baron
Vijay Mallya was a part
which made it evident
that Rajan would take
this decision.
“People like Subramanian
Swamy, who takes
sides of the industrialists,
had established
a party. Vijay Mallya
is also in that party.
Both of them were the
co-founders of the party.
So, it was evident
that it will happen. This
is unfortunate and definitely
not in favour of
the nation,” he said.
Rajan on Saturday announced
that he would
return to the academic
world at the end of his
term on September 4,
2016, adding he will
always be available to
serve his country when
needed and asserted
that his ‘successor’
would take the nation to
new heights.
Rajan is currently on
leave from the Chicago
Booth School of Business
where he holds the
post of Distinguished
Service Professor of Finance.
RJD TO JAITLEY: LOOK AT BJP’S AD
SPENDING BEFORE POINTING FINGER AT AAP
With Union Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley
accusing the AAP-led
government in Delhi of
using advertisements
to manipulate the media,
the Rashtriya Janata
Dal (RJD) on Sunday
came in strong support
of the latter, saying the
BJP should first look at
its own expenditure on
advertisements, before
passing comments on
the Kejriwal-led government.
“I find it very bizarre,
laughable. Mr. Jaitley
should look at the way
his government is functioning.
It is a government
purely (based)
on advertisement, no
work and just spectacle.
When they completed
two-years, look at the
advertisements they
gave. Just see how disturbed
they get when
there is partially critical
assessment of their
work,” RJD leader Manoj
Jha told the media.
“I think Mr. Jaitley
should look at his government
and its advertisements
before commenting
on Kejriwal ji,”
he added.
Hitting out at Jaitley
for accusing the Delhi
government, earlier the
AAP said that he should
look at his own conduct
in this regard.
KEJRIWAL QUESTIONS DU FOR
BLOCKING RTI QUERY ON PM
MODI’S DEGREE
With the Delhi University
blocking the RTI
query seeking details on
the BA degree by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi,
Delhi Chief Minister
Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday
asserted that this
development has further
deepened the ‘mystery’
surrounding the degree.
Taking to Twitter to
express his astonishment
over DU’s decision,
Kejriwal hit out at the
Centre saying, “What?
But why? Didn’t Amit
shah n Jaitley ji say that
degree was genuine and
anyone cud take it from
DU?”
Stating that if DU felt
that the information regarding
the Prime Minister’s
degree was ‘private’,
the Chief Minister
further said that they
should write to the latter
seeking his permission
to release the classified
information.
The Delhi University
in its reply to the RTI
has said that they have
the right to maintain the
privacy of every student
and that the information
can be disclosed only to
the student which it is in
regard to.
Advocate Mohd Irsad,
the applicant had filed
an RTI wishing to inspect
the documents regarding
the Prime Minister’s
degree.
Some of the questions
in the RTI were:
. Did the student ever
apply for duplicate copy
of his mark sheet or degree?
If yes, I wish to
inspect the application
with all its annexure.
. Degree entry register
of Exam IV branch which
contains the entry of the
student with this enroll
no.
. Degree entry register
of SOL, which contains
entry of the student with
this enroll no.
. Register which contains
signature of receipt
of degree of the student
with this enroll no.
Signature of the student
of receipt of degree
at convocation
Last month, Delhi University
Registrar professor
Tarun Das said the
Bachelor of Arts degree
obtained by Narendra
Damodar Das Modi from
the university in 1978
was “genuine”.
“Although the university
maintains privacy
of the students enrolled
here intact, taking into
consideration the media
queries in the past few
days, I would like to say
the Bachelor of Arts degree
obtained by Narendra
Damodar Das Modi
from Delhi University in
1978 is genuine,” Prof.
Das told the media.
On May 9, BJP president
Amit Shah and
Union Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley had released
copies of Prime Minister
Modi’s BA and MA
degrees in response to
AAP’s allegations.
However, the AAP
said the college degrees
of Prime Minister Modi
as shown by Shah and
Jaitley were “fake and
forged”.
“The way Shah
showed Prime Minister
Modi’s Bachelor and
Master’s degree was absurd.
Shah and Jaitley are
not Gods that they will
bring any degree and
the people of the nation
will believe. The degrees
shown by them are fake
and forged,” alleged AAP
spokesman Ashutosh.
Kejriwal had earlier
claimed that the Delhi
University records
showed that Prime Minister
Modi had never enrolled
in the university,
contradicting the latter’s
claim that he obtained
his BA degree from the
university. (ANI)
‘UNFIT’ AMIT SHAH MUST PRACTICE
YOGA FIRST BEFORE PREACHING
ABOUT IT: JD (U)
Continuing their tirade
against the Prime
Minister Narendra Modi-led
Government for
playing politics over
the sacred art of Yoga,
the Janata Dal (United)
took a shot at Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP)
Chief Amit Shah, saying
his ‘body’ was proof
that he did not practice
yoga and added that he
must inculcate the art in
his personal life before
preaching about its benefits
across the nation.
Speaking to the media,
JD (U) spokesperson
Neeraj Kumar slammed
former Bihar deputy
chief minister Sushil
Kumar Modi for criticising
Chief Minister Nitish
Kumar for refusing to
observe the World Yoga
Day on June 21.
“When Sushil Modi
was with us, why didn’t
he think of celebrating
Yoga Day with such
aplomb? Now, when the
trend of playing politics
over yoga has been introduced
by the BJP, he
is swaying to their tune,”
Kumar said.
Asserting that Yoga
was part of Bihar’s ancient
tradition and embedded
across the people
there, he condemned
the politics being played
by BJP on the matter,
saying that Yoga was sacred
for their state.
Rubbishing reports
that Chief Minister Nitish
kumar had refusing
to observe World Yoga
Day because he was
averse to the ancient art
form, Kumar said that
Nitish practiced Yoga
diligently every day, but
instead of showing it off
to the whole world, he
did it for himself.
“Amit Shah’s body
shows that he does not
practice yoga. And now
he is going to Faridabad
to preach about yoga.
If you want to do yoga
then do it every day at
your home, don’t show
off to the whole world,”
he added.
Earlier, slamming Nitish
for falling for the
“vote-bank politics of
alliance partner Lalu
Prasad”, Sushil Modi
reminded him that he
had taken a vow in front
of J P Narayan’s statue
during a function in
Bhagalpur to promote
natural medicine.
Nitish had earlier
advised Amit Shah to
practice yoga regularly
rather than do politics
over it.
“Has he seen his body
India, UAE to Set up
Parl Committee to
Strengthen Ties
India and the UAE will set
up an Emirati-Indian parliamentary
committee and
exchange visits of lawmakers
to boost parliamentary
ties as part of their growing
strategic partnership and
unify their visions on various
issues, including security
and challenges facing in the
region.
A decision was taken in
this regard during a meeting
between first woman speaker
of UAE’s Federal National
Council (FNC) Amal Abdullah
Al-Qubaisi and the Indian
ambassador T P Seetharam
yesterday.
During the meeting,
Al-Qubaisi stressed the importance
of activating parliamentary
relations between
FNC and Indian parliament
by establishing a friendly
Emirati-Indian parliamentary
committee, and by
prompting parliamentary
visits between the two sides,
state-run WAM news agency
reported.
Al Qubaisi said it was important
that the two countries
strengthen relations
in all fields and achieve the
required communication for
parliamentary diplomacy, as
well as to unify their visions
and positions on various issues
as part of their important
roles in addressing issues
of security and stability and
the challenges facing in the
region.
Europe’s Ariane 5
Launches Two
Satellites into Space
Europe’s Ariane 5 rocket
launcher successfully sent
two telecoms satellites, one
for a US-based communications
service provider and
one for an Indonesian bank,
into space.
They were launched from
Kourou, in French Guiana, at
6:38 PM yesterday, according
to launch company Arianespace.
It was the third launch of
the year, placing into orbit
the Echo Star XVIII for satellite
service provider Dish
Network, and BRIsat for
Rakyat Indonesia bank.
Twenty-nine minutes after
the launch, the satellite
Echo Star XVIII entered orbit.
The satellite is designed to
provide direct broadcasting
services for 15 years to the
continental US, Alaska and
Hawaii for Dish Network.
Forty-two minutes after
blast off, the satellite BRIsat
reached its orbit.
It is the first telecommunications
satellite dedicated to
a financial institution, Bank
Rakyat Indonesia, which has
53 million customers across
the Indonesian archipelago,
according to Arianespace.
Senior Taliban
Leader killed in
Afghanistan
(AFP)
(ANI): Senior Taliban leader
Mawlavi Alam was killed
in an ambush of the Afghan
National Defense and Security
Forces in western Herat
province of Afghanistan.
“MawlaviAlam was the
group’s military commission
chief for Badghis province
and was killed as he was travelling
to Herat province,” officials
said in Herat province.
Provincial governor’s
spokesman for Heratt, JilaniFarhad,
said MawlaviAlam,
who was involved in major
attacks that led to the killing
of scores of security personnel
and civilians, was ambushed
by the Afghan forces
in Keshk-e-Rabat district.
The Taliban militants have
not commented regarding
the report so far.
PAK’S NATIONAL ACTION PLAN AS
COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE AS BLASPHEMY LAW?
The recent incidents
including the sentencing
of 81-year-old optician
Abdul Shukoor,
under Pakistan’s anti-blasphemy
law for
possession of innocuous
Ahmadi literature
clearly shows that governments
National Action
Plan (NAP) which
was passed following
the ghastly December
2014 Taliban attack on
132 schoolchildren, has
been as counter-productive
as its blasphemy
law.
Pakistan’s government
unanimously
passed a National Action
Plan (NAP) so that
there would be no room
left for extremism in
any part of the country
following the December,
2014 Taliban attack.
NAP among its 20
points, outlaws radical
literature and funding,
calls for restructuring
in the FATA region and
Balochistan to address
regional grievances, and
lifts the moratorium on
the death sentence for
convicted terrorists.
But reports suggest
that over a year into its
execution, NAP has been
less effective and more
counter-productive.
The Express Tribune
in its blog has highlighted
such cases where National
Action Plan has
been least productive.
Optician Shukoor, an
Ahmadi Muslim, and his
assistant MazharSipra, a
Shia Muslim, were sentenced
to eight-year imprisonment
under both
the 1997 Anti-Terrorism
Act and anti-blasphemy
law.
Their alleged “crime”
was the possession of
innocuous Ahmadi literature
in his store, which
according to provincial
authorities was seditious
and treasonous
and thus could incite violence.
Following the arrest,
Robert P George, Chairman
of the US Commission
on International
Religious Freedom, condemned
the action.
“.. the country (Pakistan)
uses anti-terrorism
laws as pretexts
for denying peaceful
citizens [like Shakoor]
the fundamental human
right to religious
freedom,” The Express
Tribune quoted him as
saying.
In another such case,
a pan-Islamic demagogue
Abul Ala Maudoodi
had prompted religiously-motivated
riots
in Lahore in 1953.
Islamabad imposed
martial law and he was
issued the death sentence.
But Maudoodi was
soon released because
of the popular support
ultimately.
He later swayed public
opinion to allow
former Prime Minister
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, to
introduce the third constitution
in Pakistan’s
short history and re-establish
the “Islamic Republic
of Pakistan”.
He then became the
single most powerful
force in materialising
General Muhammad
Zia-ul-Haq’s Islamisation
of Pakistan and
subsequent introduction
of its infamous anti-blasphemy
laws.
Since then the Pakistan’s
anti-blasphemy
laws carry on Zia’s leg-
MALLYA SEEN AT TOP CELEBRATIONS IN UK
Declared a proclaimed
offender in a
money laundering case
and wanted in India, liquor
baron Vijay Mallya
was spotted at a book
launch event at the London
School of Economics
this week that was
attended by Indian High
Commissioner Navtej
Sarna, causing flutters
back home.
Social media was in a
frenzy after it emerged
that Sarna, who was one
of the special guests at
the event on Thursday
evening to mark the
launch of socialite Suhel
Seth’s new book, was
also present at the event
when the business tycoon
arrived.
As television news
channels showed pictures
of Sarna and Mallya
in the hall where the
event was held, questions
were raised over
the presence of the high
commissioner at an
event where a personality
wanted by enforcement
agencies in India
was also present.
Suhel Seth contended
that it was an open
event at the LSE, where
anyone could come because
of the open invitation,
Mallya was not
invited and he probably
came on his own. And
to the subsequent event
at the high commission
reception neither was
he invited nor was he
present.
The Ministry of External
Affairs (MEA) also
got into the act when it
issued a statement, saying
Sarna left the event
MAN WHO ATTEMPTED TO MURDER A HINDU KILLED IN B’DESH
Bangladesh Police on
Saturday claimed that
Golam Faizullah Fahim
(19), who was caught
by the locals during attempted
murder of a
Hindu college teacher in
western Madaripur, was
killed in a “shootout”
early on Saturday
during a raid to bust a
militants’ hideout.
Fahim, suspected
to be a member of the
banned militant group
Hizb-utTahrir, was on
a 10-day remand in
connection with the attempted
murder.
Ripan Chakraborty, a
lecturer at Government
Nazimuddin College,
acy.
In another such incident,
a mob murdered
a Christian couple after
being falsely accused of
ripping out pages of the
Quran in 2014.
Same year, a paranoid
schizophrenic,
sentenced to death for
alleged blasphemy, was
shot and injured by a
policeman inside the
prison.
Adding to another example
of such incident,
a teenager chopped off
his own hand after mistakenly
believing he had
committed blasphemy
this January.
Though the cleric responsible
for labelling
the teenager a blasphemer
was arrested,
he was released following
protest from other
clerics.
Even the teenager’s
father has supported
the cleric.
In Pakistan reportedly
judicial intervention
in blasphemy cases is
rare because witness
testimony counts as sufficient
evidence.
And following the
murder of human rights
lawyer who agreed to
defend a professor accused
of blasphemy, few
in the region are willing
to challenge the laws.
While no has ever
been executed for blasphemy
under Pakistan’s
judiciary, more than 50
individuals have been
murdered before their
trial was completed.
without waiting
for the interactive
session after
he spotted
Mallya.
“When the
High Commissioner
spotted
Mallya in the
audience he left the
stage and venue immediately
after making his
comments and without
waiting for the interactive
session,” the MEA
said in the statement.
The MEA said, “There
were two clear segments
the book launch by UK
Minister Jo Johnson and
discussion at LSE and
later a reception at the
High Commission for
select guests.”
was critically injured
following an attack earlier
in the week. Fahim
was caught by the locals
on Wednesday and
handed over to the police.
On Saturday, police
said they came under
fire as they moved with
Fahim to arrest other
Ironically, the National
Action Plan has propelled,
not quashed for
what it was introduced
in first hand.
The case of Salman
Taseer’s killer is another
one. The hanging of
Mumtaz Qadri, this February
can be explained
by the courts capitalising
on the mass fear of
extremists, not a meaningful
shift in Pakistani
jurisprudence.
Aasia Bibi, the Christian
woman whom Taseer
publicly defended
of falsely accused in
blasphemy, has spent
six years on death row,
while her family has
gone into hiding.
And despite Qadri’s
execution, the
Khatm-e-Nubuwwat
Lawyers’ Forum provides
free representation
to ensure “death for
anyone who commits
blasphemy.”
Ironically, even Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif’s
son-in-law has supported
Taseer’s killer by
deeming the murder a
“religious duty.”
Sadly, while the court
system dealt with Qadri,
no one has been held accountable
for the assassination
of Pakistan’s
Federal Minister for Minorities
Shahbaz Bhatti.
Bhatti was a Roman
Catholic and outspoken
critic of anti- blasphemy
laws in the country.
For the NAP to fully
realise its goal, the citizens
should appreciate
the concept of a true republic
and work together
in negating the mob
rule. But for it to be fully
effective, the governing
elites should also look
into matter with grave
concern and not permit
the pendulum of justice
to wildly swing, otherwise
the result could
prove devastating.
(ANI)
MEA said that the
list of invitations for
the LSE event was determined
by LSE. They
have written to the High
Commissioner that Mallya
was not on their list.
They have also said that
the event was advertised
widely through social
media and attendees
were not required to
register in advance.
“Mallya was certainly
not an invitee to the
reception at the High
Commission for which
the invitations were issued
by the High Commission,
and was not
present,” said MEA.
PTI
suspects. “Miscreants
fired at the police van
as we came near a jute
farm. A gunfight ensued.
After the gunfight, we
saw Fahim was shot
and wounded. He died
after we brought him to
a hospital,” said Sarwar
Hossain, police chief of
Madaripur.
‘SECRET’ FUNDS STILL COMING TO PAK
Pakistani Finance
Minister Ishaq Dar said
the Inter-Services Intelligence
(ISI) and Intelligence
the only two departments
still using secret
He made this statement
at the National
while responding to
lawmakers’ concerns
over the grants and expenditures
that were
laid before the house,
Dar said that 34 departments
“On Jun 11, 2013, four
days after the cabinet
the secret service
Only ISI and IB
added.
Earlier, the Jamaat-i-Islami’s
THREE MEN ARRESTED IN BELGIUM’S
OVERNIGHT RAIDS
In advance to Euro
2016, Belgium and
France are taking special
attention in the
security arrangement.
Thus Belgium police
made a sudden raid and
found three men related
to terrorism act.
Three months after
Islamist bombers killed
32 people in Brussels,
police searched dozens
of houses across the
country and arrested 12
people the night before
Belgium’s Euro 2016
game against Ireland.
Nine of them were
released after questioning
but three Belgiam
nationals identified as
27-year-old Samir C,
40-year-old Moustapha
murder and for participation
Some media reports
said the suspects had
planned attacks against
fans watching the Euro
2016 games in Brussels,
and had possibly been
targeting Saturday afternoon’s
Belgium vs
Ireland match.
Earlier on Saturday,
Belgian Prime Minister
Charles Michel chaired
a meeting of the government’s
Security Council,
Hinting to the US-EU
sanctions on Russia in
response to its military
actions in Ukraine, Putin
said: “The world needs
such strong nations, like
the US. And we need
them. But we don’t need
them constantly getting
mixed up in our affairs,
instructing us how to
live, preventing Europe
from building a relationship
with us.”
When asked about
presumptive Republican
nominee Donald
Trump, Putin called him
as a “flamboyant” or
“colorful” man.
Putin also spoke
about the presumptive
Democratic nominee,
Hillary Clinton, saying
he did not work much
with her directly when
she was the Secretary of
State.
“She probably has her
own view of US-Russian
relations,” he said.
The Russian President,
however, praised
her husband and former
US president Bill Clinton.
Guardian quoted Putin
as saying. (ANI)
measures.
“We want to continue
living normally,” Michel
told a news conference.
“The situation is under
control.”
“We are extremely
vigilant, we are monitoring
the situation
hour by hour and we
will continue with determination
the fight
against extremism, radicalisation
and terrorism,”
he added.
No weapons or explosives
were found during
the overnight searches,
which also involved 152
garage lockups.

holding a US green card,
Rajan said, “Indian-ness,
love for your country is
complicated. For every
person there is a different
way that you show
respect for your country...
My mother-in-law
will say karmayogi is
the way to go -- do your
work.”
In his three-year stint
at the central bank, the
vocal Rajan has regularly
given candid speeches
and often chose his
favourite ground of
ideas-- academic institutions
--for speaking
his mind on key issues.
He chose his alma
mater IIT-Delhi to make
a passionate plea in
support of tolerance
following the brutal the
lynching of an elderly
Muslim in nearby Dadri
over allegedly eating
beef, saying tolerance
and mutual respect are
necessary to improve an
environment for ideas
and physical harm or
verbal contempt for any
particular group should
not be allowed.
On a day when the
RBI signed the all-important
monetary policy
agreement with the
government, Rajan had
invoked Hitler’s regime
to drive home the point
that strong governments
will not always
drive move in the right
direction.
Raghuram Rajan on
Saturday said he would
not be seeking a second
term, ending months
of speculation about
his future as Reserve
Bank Governor. Dr Rajan
releases a statement
today saying he plans
to return to academia
when his term ends on
September 4. “I want
to share with you that I
will be returning to academia
when my term
as Governor ends on
September 4, 2016,”
said Dr Rajan in a press
release addressed to the
staff of RBI. 53-year-old
Dr Rajan is the first RBI
governor since 1992 not
to seek a second term
as India’s central bank
boss.
Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley said that
the government “appreciates
the good work
done by him and respects
his decision”. Dr
Rajan’s successor would
be announced shortly,
he added.
Former Finance Minister
P Chidambaram,
instrumental in appointing
Dr Rajan as RBI
chief in 2013, said he
was “disappointed and
profoundly saddened”
by the decision. “As I
had said some time ago,
this government did not
deserve Dr Rajan. Nevertheless,
India is the
loser,” he said.
The RBI chief’s decision
not to seek a second
term comes at a
Communications Officer Malay
Dikshit said, adding that it was
a value proposition.
He said that the company
was now focusing on enhancing
value-added services. “We
plan to step up the share of value-added
services in our total
revenue,” he said. He, however,
declined to share financial
details.
time when he had come
under a vicious attack
from BJP lawmaker Subramanian
Swamy, who
had accused Dr Rajan
of an “apparently deliberate
attempt to wreck
the Indian economy”. Mr
Swamy had contended
that the RBI governor is
“mentally not fully Indian”
since he continues
to renew the Green Card
issued to him by the US
government.
In an interview earlier
this month, Dr Rajan
had said that he “welcomes
genuine criticism
of our policy but will
not address ad hominem
attacks” or allegations
against him as individual
rather than the
policies and position he
holds.
Dr Rajan had also
hinted that he may
not be interested in a
second term. “I won’t
comment on a second
term. But you’ve seen
my speeches. My ultimate
home is in the
realm of ideas,” he had
said. Dr Rajan, a former
chief economist at the
International Monetary
Fund (IMF), has been
popular with foreign investors
who cheered his
efforts to lower inflation
and clean up staterun
banks’ massive bad
loans.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
INDIA RANKS FOURTH IN HACKED SERVERS:
Kaspersky Lab researchers have
investigated a global forum where
cyber criminals can buy and sell
access to compromised servers for
as little as $6 each.
The xDedic marketplace, which
appears to be run by a Russian-speaking
group, currently
lists 70,624 hacked Remote Desktop
Protocol (RDP) servers for sale
and India ranks fourth in hacked
servers with 3,488 compromised
servers listed on xDedi as of May
2016.
According to the investigation,
many of the servers host or provide
access to popular consumer
websites and services and some
have software installed for direct
mail, financial accounting and
Point-of-Sale (PoS) processing.
They can be used to target the
owners’ infrastructures or as a
launch-pad for wider attacks,
while the owners, including government
entities, corporations
KASPERSKY LAB
and universities, have little or no
idea of what’s happening.
xDedic is a powerful example of
a new kind of cybercriminal marketplace:
well-organized and supported
and offering everyone from
entry-level cybercriminals to APT
groups fast, cheap and easy access
to legitimate organizational infrastructure
that keeps their crimes
below the radar for as long as possible.
“xDedic is further confirmation
that cybercrime-as-a-service is
expanding through the addition of
commercial ecosystems and trading
platforms. Its existence makes
it easier than ever for everyone,
from low-skilled malicious attackers
to nation-state backed APTs to
engage in potentially devastating
attacks in a way that is cheap, fast
and effective,” said CostinRaiu,
Director, Global Research and
Analysis Team, Kaspersky Lab.
He said that not just the customers
or organizations, but the servers’
owners are also targeted.
“The ultimate victims are not just
the consumers or organisations
targeted in an attack, but also the
unsuspecting owners of the servers:
they are likely to be completely
unaware that their servers are
being hijacked again and again
for different attacks, all conducted
right under their nose,” he added.
A European internet service provider
(ISP) alerted Kaspersky Lab
to the existence of xDedic and the
companies worked together to investigate
how the forum operates.
Kaspersky Lab is a global cyber security
company founded in 1997
and has deep threat intelligence
and security expertise is constantly
transforming into security
solutions and services to protect
businesses, critical infrastructure,
governments and consumers
around the globe.
INDIA TO LOSE A SKILLFUL
ECONOMIC THINKER
Terming RBI Governor Raghuram
Rajan’s decision not to seek a second
term as ‘sad’ for the country, Nobel
laureate Amartya Sen said on Saturday
,”India is losing one of the most
skillful economic thinkers in the
world.”
“We are losing one of the most skillful
financial economic thinkers in the
world. It is sad for the country and it
is sad for the government of the country
too. RBI is not a completely autonomous
institution,” Sen told a private
TV channel.
In an apparent reference to BJP MP
Subramanian Swamy, who attacked
Rajan on numerous occasions, Sen
said, “It is true that some members of
the ruling party, I understand, I have
not seen that but somebody told me,
have been sniping at Raghuram Rajan.
That is certainly unfortunate.”
Noting that he is not a great admirer
of the Narendra Modi government,
the economist said the administration
may have to decide what it wants in
its policy.
Rajan earlier on Saturday said that
he will be returning to academia after
completion of his term as RBI Gover-
FOREIGN SECY JAISHANKAR MAKES
UNANNOUNCED VISIT TO CHINA ON NSG ISSUE
Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar
made an unannounced visit to Beijing
on June 16-17 to enlist support for
India’s bid for membership of the Nuclear
Suppliers Group which is being
opposed by China.
Jaishankar’s visit comes a week
ahead of the plenary meeting of the
48-nation atomic trading bloc scheduled
to be held in Seoul on June 24
where India’s membership is likely to
be discussed.
China has been strongly opposing
India’s membership at the premier
club arguing that it was not a signatory
to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty (NPT).
India has been reaching out to NSG
member countries seeking support
for its membership of the bloc whose
members are allowed to trade in and
The m-cap of TCS
surged Rs 8,384.17
crore to Rs 5, 13,000.91
crore, emerging as the
biggest gainer among
the top-10 firms. Sun
Pharma added Rs 288.8
crore to Rs 1, 78,769.24
crore. In contrast,
ONGC’s valuation declined
by Rs 6,373.84
crore to Rs 1, 80,178.62
crore. The m-cap of RIL
fell by Rs 778.19 crore
to Rs 3,15,570.92 crore
and of Infosys dipped
Rs 574.24 crore to Rs
2,70,648.99 crore.
HDFC lost Rs 404.72
crore to Rs 1,94,110.90
crore from its m-cap.
In the ranking of top-
10 firms, TCS remained
at the number one position
followed by RIL,
HDFC Bank, ITC, Infosys,
CIL, HDFC, HUL, ONGC
and Sun Pharma.
For the week, the BSE
Sensex shed 9.84 points
to end at 26,625.91.
export nuclear technology. The US
has backed India and asked various
NSG members to support New Delhi’s
bid. It is understood that a number of
countries including Turkey, South Africa,
Ireland and New Zealand were
not in favour of India’s entry into the
NSG. India had managed to secure
support of NSG members Switzerland
and Mexico during Prime Minister Narendra
Modi’s recent visit to these two
countries as part of a five-nation tour.
Mexico and Switzerland were known
to have strong nuclear proliferation
concerns and were not in favour of allowing
NSG membership to countries
which were not signatory to NPT.
India’s access to the NSG, a body
that regulates the global trade of nuclear
technology, is expected to open
up the international market for India’s
domestic nuclear energy programme.
India has been campaigning
for membership of the bloc for last
few years and had formally moved its
application on May 12.
The NSG had granted an exclusive
waiver to India in 2008 to access civil
nuclear technology after China reluctantly
backed India’s case based on
the Indo-US nuclear deal.
SOUNDCLOUD GETS $ 70M
INVESTMENT FROM TWITTER
Online social networking
giant Twitter has invested
a whopping 70 million
dollars in SoundCloud, the
global online audio distribution
platform, to help
the Berlin-based music
streaming business expand
its paid offering.
The reports said that the
investment was part of a
larger financing round expected
to amount to about
$100 million, valuing the
company at about $700
million.
“We can confirm that Twitter
has made an investment,”
the SoundCloud
said on Wednesday.However,
it refused to comment
on the valuation.
The company said it will
use the amount to “continue
the global roll-out
of many company initiatives
such as our recently
launched subscription service,
SoundCloud Go.”
SoundCloud, which claims
of having 175 million
monthly users, had earlier
released the premium service
in March and completed
deals with major music
labels and publishers as
well.
CHILE THRASH MEXICO BY 7-0 TO REACH THE SEMIS
Eduardo Vargas
scored four goals as
holders Chile sent Mexico
spinning to a historic
7-0 defeat to reach the
semi-finals of the Copa
America Centenario
here Saturday. The drubbing
was Mexico’s worst
ever defeat in the finals
of a major tournament.
IN COPA AMERICA CENTENARIO
Their previous biggest
loss was a 6-0 rout by
West Germany at the
1978 World Cup in Argentina.
Hoffenheim forward
Vargas completed a hattrick
in 13 devastating
minutes either side of
half-time to send Chile
into a semi-final against
Colombia in Chicago on
Wednesday.
The rout was also
only one goal away
from equalling Mexico’s
heaviest ever defeat in
any international, an 8-0
thrashing by England in
London in 1961.
Vargas grabbed his
fourth goal in the 74th
minute to give Chile a
6-0 lead.
But the punishment
did not finish there with
Edson Puch adding a
seventh in the 88th minute
for his second of the
match. Chile, winners of
last year’s Copa America
on home soil, had
ANDREW LANDRY TO BECOME FIRST PLAYER TO
WIN US OPEN IN FIRST TRY ?
The 28-year-old PGA
Tour rookie, ranked
624th in the world, enters
the final day at Oakmont
within striking distance
of the unlikeliest of
US Open championships.
The marginalia of US
Open lore is scrawled
thick with surprise
first-round leaders who
burst from obscurity
only to vanish as quickly
as they appeared. The
roll of names reads like
the answer key to a pub
quiz – Lee Mackey Jr,
Bob Gadja, Mike Nicolette,
Olin Browne, Justin
Hicks – improbable
opening-round leaders
all, each of whom plummeted
back into relative
anonymity.
It’s an arcane fate
that Andrew Landry, the
world’s 694th-ranked
golfer and unlikely early
frontrunner this week
at Oakmont Country
Club after an opening
18 holes that spanned
two days and three rain
delays, seemed destined
for Saturday when he
twice found bunkers
and dropped four shots
in a three-hole stretch
on the front nine of his
second round. The bully
of a course that’s hosted
the nation’s oldest
championship more often
than any other, dotted
with more than 200
sand traps and extolled
by many as America’s
most difficult, was restoring
the natural order
of things.
But rather than come
undone the hitherto
unknown 28-year-old
steadied himself. Beneath
a cloudless sky
that baked the mud
about the grounds and
restored the greens to
their glassy standard,
Landry went 3-under
coming in – including
consecutive birdies on
17th and 18th – to move
to 3-under for the championship
through 36
holes. When the book
closed on the second
round just after midday
he found
himself
alone in second
place,
one stroke
b e h i n d
countryman
Dustin Johnson.
Turns
out the prognosticators
who foresaw
a young Texan
playing
in the final
group on the
weekend were half-right
– only it wasn’t defending
champion Jordan
Speith.
Landry continued his
unflappable play a few
hours later when he
stepped onto the opening
tee alongside Johnson
and Scott Piercy to
play as much of the third
round as daylight permitted.
He opened with
six straight pars with
only one tap-in, making
a birdie on No 7 to briefly
move into first place
by himself. After 18 bogey-free
holes, he finally
blinked on No 9. But
when the horn sounded
for darkness at 8:49pm,
Landry had shot even
par through 13 holes to
remain in second, two
behind leader Shane
Lowry and squarely in
the title hunt.
RONALDO‘S MISSED PENALTY
There was relief for
Austria and joy for those
who like to see superstars
cut down to size after Cristiano
Ronaldo missed a
penalty and a chance to go
into the European Championship
record books on
Saturday.
Portugal won a spot kick
in the 79th minute of their
Group F match against
Austria. Goalkeeper Robert
Almer dived the wrong
way but Ronaldo crashed
his shot against the post.
The 31-year-old holder
of multiple scoring records
looked to the heavens in
disbelief. He just needs one
goal in the tournament to
become the first player
to score at four European
Championship finals.
Minutes later Ronaldo
got the ball in the net but
was offside. He also had a
golden chance in the first
half but put his header too
close to Almer. The game
ended goal less, Austrian
fans were chanting “Messi,
Messi” and Ronaldo
was already the talk of the
Twitter sphere when he
started to walk off clearly
frustrated.
But the night of surprises
was still not over.
One man managed to get
past the Parc des Princes
security and ran up to the
Portuguese star. Ronaldo
held back his disappointment
and waited while the
spectator took his mobile
to take a selfie. Security
guards also stood and
watched. Once the picture
was taken, however, the
spectator was taken away,
crying with happiness.
Portugal’s coach Fernando
Santos would not
say whether Ronaldo was
also in tears in the dressing
room.
Asked how the Portugal
captain was feeling, Santos
diplomatically responded:
“I prefer not to talk about
this subject. I won’t talk
about individual players.”
Austria coach Marcel
Koller was relieved and
delighted.
The miss meant his side
keep alive their slender
hopes of reaching the last
16. “Ronaldo made chances.
You have to be 100
percent against a player
like him with the creativity
that we all know he has,”
declared Koller.
“Fortunately he didn’t
manage to score,” he added.
“If the ball had gone
in we would have been
able to pack our bags for
Austria.”
Analysis of Ronaldo’s
record was intense. The
striker has now missed
atmosphere in front of a
crowd of 70,547 people
at the Levi’s Stadium,
home of the San Francisco
49ers.
But despite the overwhelmingly
pro-Mexico
crowd, Chile was quicker
to settle, with Puch
opening the scoring on
16 minutes when he
steered in a rebound
from Marcelo Diaz’s shot
after Guillermo Ochoa
could only parry away.
Vargas grabbed a second
a minute before halftime
to stun the crowd
into silence as the teams
headed in for the break.
Chile then cut loose early
in the second half with
Landry – barely 5ft
7in, 150lbs – cut a
diminutive figure alongside
Johnson, a formidable
6ft 4in, 190lb specimen
who rates among
the tour’s biggest hitters.
But the Texan’s modest
stature belies a big game
that’s seen him average
295.6 yards off the
tee after 49 holes. Even
more impressively, he’s
betrayed no outward
signs of anxiety throughout
his charmed run,
displaying the impassive
sangfroid of veteran decades
in.
Now he’s within striking
distance of becoming
the first player to win
the US Open on his first
try since Francis Ouimet
prevailed at Brookline in
1913.
If you’d never heard
of Landry before this
week, you’re not alone.
His preposterous opening-round
66 – the lowest
ever first round in
nine Opens at Oakmont,
a better score than
Snead, Hogan, Palmer,
Nicklaus, Player, Watson
and Woods ever carded
in any round here – sent
even the most deeply
entrenched writers on
the golf beat diving into
their media guides.
He was an undersized
120lb teenager when he
was recruited by Coach
Brad McMakin to Lamar
University, where he
played as a freshman.
He then followed McMakin
to the University of
Arkansas, where he was
a three-time All-American
and nearly led the
19 out of
110 career
penalties,
including in
shootouts,
according to
renowned
Spanish football
statistician
Mr Chip.
He pointed out however
that Argentine rival Lionel
Messi has missed the same
number from 87 penalties
taken.
Other observers twisted
the knife a little. Former
England captain Gary
Lineker said on Twitter:
“Ronaldo: no goals from
36 free kicks in major
tournaments. Bale: 2 goals
from 3 free kicks in major
tournaments.”
Wales forward Gareth
Bale has scored two brilliant
free kicks at Euro
2016.
slick inter-play ripping
apart a feeble Mexican
defence at will.
Arsenal star Alexis
Sanchez made it 3-0 in
the 49th minute before
two more goals from
Vargas in the 52nd and
57th minutes piled on
the agony for Mexico.
Vargas’s fourth made
it 6-0 on the night before
Puch then toe-poked
home to complete the
scoring.
Brazilian referee Heber
Lopes spared Mexico
the possibility of greater
humiliation, whistling
for full-time almost on
the stroke of 90 minutes,
with no time added on.
his PGA Tour card by finishing
21st on last year’s
Web.com Tour money
list, he’s played a scant
12 events and missed
more cuts than he’s
made. His career-best
finish: a tie for 41st at
the St Jude Classic. A
finish anywhere in the
top 30 at Oakmont, will
more than double his
career earnings to date
($69,130.44).
Landry punched his
Open ticket by shooting
a 69 at a local qualifier
in Durham, North Carolina,
followed by a 7-under
135 at the Memphis
sectional. The few odds
makers who bothered
installed him as a 1,000-
1 long shot ahead of the
tournament. Before his
eyeball-popping opening
round – where he became
the first US Open
rookie since Bob Tway in
1986 at Shinnecock Hills
to be the sole leader after
18 holes – Landry
pulled his father aside
and told him that he was
going to win the tournament.
Now he’s 23 holes
from validating that
outrageous confidence
– and springing an upset
for the ages.
Ronaldo got into trouble
last week when he said
that Iceland, after they
doggedly held Portugal to
a 1-1 draw, had a “small
mentality” because of their
defensive tactics.
This time he did get a lot
of praise on social media
for patiently waiting with
the fan to take the selfie.
British sports journalist
Ewan Murray said on
Twitter: “So Ronaldo is
arrogant, says the odd
daft thing... he is also a key
reason millions of kids the
world over are attracted to
football.
HIGUAIN, MESSI THRUST ARGENTI-
NA INTO COPA AMERICA SEMIS
Gonzalo Higuain
netted a
stylish brace as
Lionel Messi returned
in style to
inspire Argentina
through to the
Copa America
semi-finals.
The Napoli forward
netted twice
in the first half before Luis
Seijas missed a penalty for
the Venezuelans. And despite
a Solomon Rondon consolation,
first Messi and then Erik
Lamela sealed an easy passage
through for the number
one seeds.
Gonzalo Higuain scored
twice before star striker Lionel
Messi produced a masterful
display as Argentina
stormed into the semi-finals
of the Copa America Centenario
with a comfortable 4-1
win over Venezuela at Gillette
Stadium in Foxborough,
Massachusetts on Sunday.
Forward Higuain headed
Argentina into an
eighth-minute lead before
doubling the score for his
side in the 28th minute. It
was in the 60th minute when
Messi scored the third
girl to equal Gabriel
Batistuta’s 54-goal record
and hand his side
with a win. He ended
the match with a goal
and two assists.
Although Salomon
Rondon provided
Venezuela with some
hope by opening his
side’s account in the 70th
minute of the match, Argentina
continued to maintain
their three-goal lead with
Tottenaham’s Erik Lamela
scoring the fourth goal just
one minute later.
LOWRY HOLDS TWO-SHOT LEAD AS
US OPEN IS HALTED FOR DARKNESS
Shane Lowry’s US Open
bid could have been fatally
undermined by the calling
of a penalty upon himself on
Oakmont’s 16th green, his
seventh, during the belated
playing of round two on Saturday.
Instead, the Irishman
heads into Sunday whilst
holding a two-shot lead in
the second major of 2016.
The biggest day, plus potentially
most high-profile prize
of Lowry’s career awaits. He
won’t be lacking in support.
The penalty incident
– Lowry’s ball moved so
slightly upon address before
putting – clearly did nothing
to blunt the 29-year-old’s
ambition. He completed
round two in 68 shots before
returning on Saturday
afternoon to play 14 holes
in three under par. Shortly
before 9pm, darkness played
its hand.
With the third round halted
for darkness, the Irishman
heads into Sunday with
a two-shot lead and inside
Argentina will now lock
horns with USA while Chile
will take on Colombia for a
place in the finals.
HOPE YOUNGSTERS LEARN FROM THE DEFEAT: MS DHONI
“I feel, though we lost the
game - it is disappointing - it
is still a learning curve for the
youngsters, provided they
are learning out of it,” said
Dhoni. India captain Mahendra
Singh Dhoni hopes the
youngsters in the squad learn
from their mistakes after a
shock loss to Zimbabwe in
the opening T20 International
here.
The young Indian batsmen
threw their wickets
away at crucial junctures as
the visitors ended up losing
the game by two runs on Saturday
. Dhoni hopes the fresh
track on the most high-profile
prize of his career.
Lowry is five under for the
tournament and will return
at 7am on Sunday to finish
his third round before the
business end of a now enthralling
event arrives. The
man lying second, somewhat
remarkably, with five holes
of his second round to finish
is the world No 624 Andrew
Landry.
Lowry’s prominence in
the 2015 US Open is commonly
overlooked. He ultimately
tied ninth after
a week in which he didn’t
score than higher than 71 at
Chambers Bay and, crucially,
failed to convert a series
of putts. Lowry is right to
acknowledge the quality of
those in his slipstream. Lee
Westwood, Garcia and Johnson
are three from the lead,
with the latter offering his
first wobbles of the tournament
on Saturday afternoon.
That trio are yet to win a major,
with Garcia laughing off
the notion of a monkey on
his back when posed by an
interviewer. Day is six adrift
of Lowry and therefore still a
valid part of the discussion.
Jordan Spieth had the consolation
of finishing round
three, carding a 70, but at
plus four needs something in
the realms of the remarkable
to successfully defend his title.
Perhaps most intriguing
is the placing of Branden
Grace at one under after a
superb third round of 66; the
South African suffered late
heartbreak at Chambers Bay
from a position of controlling
the destiny of the US Open.
EURO 2016: VARDY BACKING RIVAL
TO PROVE HIS FORM
Jamie Vardy and Daniel
Sturridge proved their form
by coming off the bench to
dig England out of trouble
in their 2-1 win over Wales
in Lens. England take on Slovakia
tomorrow in the key
battle for first place in Group
B at Euro 2016 with Roy
Hodgson mulling over which
of his strikers to deploy England
manager Hodgson has
an embarrassment of riches
up front, but Harry Kane,
who started in the 1-1 draw
against Russia and win over
Wales, has struggled to make
an impact in France.
Vardy’s equaliser against
Wales cancelled out Gareth
Bale’s thunderbolt free-kick
before Sturridge broke Welsh
hearts with the late winner.
Leicester City’s Vardy says
faces don’t make the same
mistakes in the second game
here tomorrow. “You have
to take it in a serious manner
because whenever you
will represent the country,
whenever they get a chance
to be part of the proper Indian
team for a consistent period
of time, they will feel the
pressure. That will be the
time when a game like this or
a tour like this will really help
them ease out that pressure,”
he said further.
“I felt the last ball was brilliant
but that is what my job
is, so maybe I am the person
to finish the job. But at the
same time, we kept losing
wickets and what happens
at that stage is that you are
losing wickets and you are
giving one dot ball and at the
same time, the set batsman is
not getting strike.
“The batsmen will have to
take the responsibility. The
he would be content
with another cameo
off the bench in
Saint-Etienne having
come on after the
break against the
Welsh.
Kane’s lack of
form in France has
been attributed to
his efforts for Tottenham
Hotspur in
the Premier League
title race. The Spurs man
has played 5,092 minutes of
football in the past year, compared
with 3,707 for Vardy
and 1,812 for Sturridge. Kane
has scored two goals in his
last seven for club and country,
Sturridge has three in six
and Vardy has four in five.
“He (Kane) doesn’t seem
reason being, few of them,
they were set, they were batting
well. When you are chasing
targets, you need to take
it to the end and then look
to play the shots. That was
something that was lacking
in this game,” Dhoni pointed
out.
The second string squad
for the tour was picked in the
absence of seniors and Dhoni
said the rookie players must
make the most of the opportunity.
The skipper said he
batted at six to give others
more time in the middle.
“It is not for me. If I had to
bat up, I could easily bat at
four for this team. But what is
important is for these youngsters
to bat at that number
because this is an opportunity
for them. The only reason
I am here is to understand
them and at the same time
guide them as to what has to
be done.
tired, I’m sure he’ll want to
keep starting and hopefully
get on that goal run,” said
Vardy.
“He’ll be putting the extra
effort in training as well to
hopefully stay in the starting
lineup and get cracking.”
Victory over the Welsh on
Thursday left England top of
Group with four points.

BLAKE SHELTON
Blake Shelton may
have received birthday
best one surely came
from his girlfriend
Gwen Stefani.
Wishing the birthday
singer took to her Instagram
an adorable throwback
picture of him, writing,
“Happy birthday to @
Taking to her Twitter
Responding to
CAT FIGHT: DEMI LOVATO AIMS AT MARIAH
CAREY FOR ARIANA GRANDE, J.LO
Seems like Demi Lovato
has started up a
new feud with Mariah
Carey, where innocent
bystanders Ariana
Grande and Jennifer Lopez
were pulled in too.
The drama started
when a fan shared a
meme on Instagram
that implied Grande
was a poor man’s Mariah
Carey.
“When you order it
online vs. when it arrives,”
the meme was
captioned, seemingly
implying Grande
MY CHARACTER IN MAHANAYAK
BEARS TRACES OF UTTAM KUMAR
AND BISWAJIT CHATTERJEE:
PROSENJIT
Tollygunge superstar
Prosenjit Chatterjee
says that his character
in the period-look telly
serial ‘Mahanayak’
bears traces of both Uttam
Kumar and Biswajit
Chatterjee.
“Yes for months
during shoots, I was
confined within the
looks of a superstar
representing that era.
You can say I carried
the looks of both Uttamjethu
(Uttam uncle)
and my father Biswajit
Chatterjee.
I totally inhabited in
that period and tried to
get into the skin of my
matinee idol character
by sporting the retro
look,” Prosenjit told PTI
at the pre-telecast premier
of certain visuals
of the much anticipated
serial.
“The more I took
part in the shooting,
the greater I got an intimate
knowledge of that
era (60s-70s). As I enacted
certain incidents
reported to have taken
place in the superstar’s
life, I surely could connect,”
Prosenjit, who is
named Arun, said.
Sporting the 60s’
glamourous heroine’s
party look at the programme,
principal
female lead of the serial
Paoli Dam, whose
character is interestingly
called ‘Sucharita’,
stopped short of describing
it as inspired
by Suchitra Sen’s life.
“That is for you, the
audience to decipher.
My character is fictional.
But yes I had to
mould myself for that
role and that was very
taxing mouthing lots of
dialogues of that period,”
Paoli said when told
her make-up and looks
in Mahanayak largely
resembled Suchitra Sen
in her late 20s.
Director Birsa
Dasgupta said “Mahanayak
is a fictional biopic
of a matinee idol which
explores the untold story
of a remarkable life
beneath the glare of arc
light. .
brother Sohail Khan are
all set to team up again
in Kabir Khan’s film ‘
Tubelight.’
According to sources
the 46-year-old actor
has been roped in to
play the younger brother
of Dabangg Khan in
the movie that is set in
the late 50s.
The insider added
that the ‘Krishna Cottage’
star, who would
portray a mute character
in the film, will soon
start prepping for it.
It is further being said
doesn’t live up to the
‘Precious’ singer’s musical
talent. Hence, Lovato
commented again
to clarify her remark,
saying, “Mariah is a legend
and is so talented
but constantly disses
people. It’s nasty the
way she treats Jennifer
[Lopez]. Ari did nothing
wrong.”
With this, Lovato
called out Carey for her
that Kabir has begun
the recce for the movie,
which will be shot in Ladakh
and Mumbai.
The forthcoming
flick, which is described
as a compelling human
story with a larger thanlife
political backdrop,
would be the third collaboration
of the ‘Phantom’
director and the
‘Kick’ actor.
Kabir and Salman
had earlier teamed up
for films ‘Ek Tha Tiger’
and blockbuster ‘Bajrangi
Bhaijaan.’
long-drawn feud with
the ‘Dance Again’ songstress.
For the uninitiated,
Carey has long has an issue
with J.Lo. In the early
2000 she was asked
what she thought about
other pop singers. She
said Beyonce was “nice”
and “a good writer” but
when she was asked
about Lopez she said “I
don’t know her.”
A COOKING BASED
REALITY SHOW
Actress Ishita Dutta,
last seen in Bollywood
star Ajay Devgn’s
“Drishyam” as his adopted
daughter, says if
there is anything on reality
TV that she would
like to try, it would a
When asked what
type of reality show she
would want to do, Ishita
said, “If it’s a cooking
based reality show I
would love to do it because
I love cooking.”
Ishita made her
television debut with
romantic-drama “Ek
after a gap of two years,
she has returned to
the small screen with
“Rishton Ka Saudagar -
The 25-year-old actress
plays a teacher in
her new show, which
also stars Vatsal Seth of
“Ek Hasina Thi” fame.
Describing her character,
KRITI SANON REACTS TO DATING
RUMOURS WITH SUSHANT SINGH
Actress Kriti Sanon,
who was rumoured
to be dating the ‘Kai
Po Che!’ star Sushant
Singh Rajput, has
rubbished the news
via social media and
termed it as ‘baseless’.
The 25-year-old actress
recently took to
her Twitter handle to
quash the rumours
and tweeted, “Had
enough...as much as
we like & respect
each other as co-stars,
there is absolutely NO
truth to these baseless
manufactured stories!
Thanks.”
Earlier, the rumours
were making the
rounds that the ‘Heropanti’
actress, who
will be seen with Sushant
in her upcoming
film ‘Raabta,’ was in a
romantic relationship
with him.
However, both actors
maintained silence
on the rumoured
news, which began a
few months ago as a
mere speculation.
Sushant, who recently
had a break-up
with his long-time girlfriend
Ankita Lokhande,
is yet to comment
on the news.
MY MARRIAGE TO BRITNEY
SPEARS WAS OVERWHELMING:
KEVIN FEDERLINE
Kevin Federline
says his marriage to
Britney Spears was
“overwhelming”.
The 38-year-old
star, who has Jayden
James, nine, and Sean
Preston, 10, with the
‘Piece of Me’ hitmaker,
said the whole relationship
was completely
“different”
than he imagined it
would be.
“That was a whole
different lifestyle
than I ever imagined.
I mean, just getting
around from place to
place and having 20
people follow you all
day long - your whole
life kind of being told
through somebody
else’s eyes.
“Everybody wants
to put their own spin
on it. We like, were
caught right in the
midst of that whole
thing. It was so crazy. I
look back at it and it’s
like, at times it was
so overwhelming,” he
said.
“That time of my
life, there’s so many
different, like, pieces
missing because of
everything that was
going on. That was at
the, like, height of everything
and you’re
thrown into this thing
and you’re thrown
into that thing and
the in-between stuff.
I know it happened.
I know why it happened.
That’s pretty much
all that I’m going to
say.
GWEN STILL HEARTBROKEN OVER
HER DIVORCE
Singer Gwen Stefani is “still
heartbroken” over her divorce
from Gavin Rossdale.
The “What You Waiting For”
hit-maker - who is now dating
Blake Shelton - said she is still suffering
following the breakup of her
family.
“I’m not in a different place yet.
I’m still heartbroken.
You can’t have your family break
up and still not be going through it
a year later. I was just cleaning out
a room in my house before I called
you. It’s devastating,” she said.
Meanwhile, the 46-year-old singer
- who has three children- Kingston,
10, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 2,
with ex Gavin - previously gushed
about Shelton, admitting she “can’t
believe” she’s dating him.
“I actually feel like I’m not in my
own life, because I’m not. I’m in a
different life all of a sudden. I’m so
blessed and I feel like I believe in
my path.
Now there are all these miracles
around me! Trust me, I still can’t
believe that happened and is still
happening. For whatever reason, I
was chosen to be in this position,
and I’m so honoured and more
confident. And I look at it, like, it
always works out.
