LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW SCHOOLS’ CHALLENGE <strong>2016</strong> Aiming to develop a better understanding of food, farming and sustainability in young people, Lincolnshire Agricultural Society and The EBP are working together on the challenge for the tenth year. School teams research and present on a topic from a list of options ranging from devising menus for healthy school meals, to planning improvements to a local piece of land; comparing the way crops are grown around the globe to reducing their school’s carbon footprint. The students will compete for the title of The Lincolnshire Show Schools’ Challenge Champion and trophies will be awarded to the winners in The Exhibition Hall on Thursday 23 June from 1:45pm onwards. The Schools’ Challenge will see over 1,000 young people attend the show – over 2,500 through general school visits. More than 60 schools have entered this year and we look forward to an exciting final showdown! See the finalists at Lincoln Showground, 22-23 June. Details are online: www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk/kids-zone/ schools-challenge Lady Jane Franklin school competes at Lincolnshire Show 2015 THE EBP PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY, 22 JUNE With interactive sessions centred on food, farming and sustainability for learning across the curriculum, teachers can meet industry representatives and employers, gather information and resources and take them back to the classroom. Sessions this year include: • Bobbie Harvey from Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) will look at how traditional crafts can be used in an outdoor setting. Suitable for teachers and teaching assistants of all key stages. • Rebecca Watkins and Kathryn Grant from British Sugar will walk through the sugar journey from the field through to end products and consumers, with an interesting sustainability story to share and resources to access. • Ronnie Ownsworth from Ownsworth’s Rapeseed Oil will address the importance of food and farming in the local area, with informational resources to take back to the classroom. • Ian Marshman from Heritage Lincolnshire will lead a workshop on bringing local history to life for pupils, with advice on finding (free!) resources and activity ideas. Access details on the show website: www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk/kids-zone SEEDS FROM SPACE The EBP’s Suzy Stone was inspired by the Mission Principia campaign’s ‘Rocket Science’ activity, and extended it into a schools’ challenge for the show called ‘Mission 321… Grow’, in which students cultivate and compare rocket seeds from two batches: one that has been taken to the International Space Station and back, and one that has stayed on Earth. The UK Space Agency has partnered with the Royal Horticultural Society in Rocket Science: an educational project that gives UK children the chance to become space biologists. As part of British astronaut Tim Peake’s mission, 2kg of rocket seeds were sent to the International Space Station (ISS) and returned, so that thousands of schools could take part in a national science experiment to compare those seeds with seeds that had stayed on Earth. Participating schools each received two packets of 100 seeds to grow and compare. On 18 April, Tim Peake sent a message from the ISS, 400km above our planet’s surface: “It’s possible that among those pupils taking part in the project are the young people who will help mankind reach the next big milestones in space exploration for the benefit of people on Earth. I hope the… Rocket Science experiment will spark curiosity and wonder amongst young people who may become the next generation of horticultural scientists.” Between primary, secondary and special schools there are 16 entries for Mission 321… Grow. Seeds are well and truly sprouted but their progress is not public at time of printing – to see more you’ll have to visit the show…!
