9 Later Zerah the E·thi·opian
went out against them with
a military force of a million
their forefathers. 19 And A·bijah
kept chasing after Jer·o·boam
and got to capture cities from
him, Bethel a and its dependent
towns, and Jesha·nah and its
dependent towns, and Ephra·in
and its dependent towns. b
20 And Jer·o·boam did not retain
any more power c in the days
of A·bijah; but Jehovah dealt
him a blow, d so that he died.
21 And A·bijah continued to
strengthen himself. e In time he
got fourteen wives for himself, f
and became father to twentytwo
sons g and sixteen daughters.
22 And the rest of A·bijah’s
affairs, even his ways and
hiswords,arewrittenintheexposition
of the prophet Iddo. h

Finally A·bijah lay down
with his forefathers, i and
they buried him in the City of David;
j and Asa k his son began to
reign in place of him. In his days
the land had no disturbance l for
ten years.
2 And Asa proceeded to do
what was good and right in the
eyes of Jehovah his God. 3 So
he removed the foreign altars m
and the high places n and broke
up the sacred pillars o and cut
down the sacred poles. p 4 Further,
he said to Judah to search q
for Jehovah the God of their forefathers
and to do the law r and the
commandment. s 5 Accordingly
he removed from all the cities
of Judah the high places and the
incense stands; t and the kingdom
continued without disturbance
u before him. 6 And he
went on to build fortified cities in
Judah, v for the land had no disturbance;
and there was no war
against him during these years,
for Jehovah gave him rest. w
7 So he said to Judah: “Let us
build these cities and make
walls x around and towers, y double
doors and bars. z For us the
land is yet available, because we
have searched for Jehovah our
God. a We have searched, and he

against him and they drew up
in battle formation in the valley
of Zepha·thah at Ma·reshah.
11 And Asa began to call to Jehovah
his God k and say: “O Jehovah,astohelping,itdoesnot
matter with you whether there
are many or those with no power.
l Help us, O Jehovah our
God, for upon you we do lean, m
and in your name n we have come
against this crowd. O Jehovah,
you are our God. o Do not let mortal
man retain strength against
you.” p
12 At that Jehovah defeated q
the E·thi·opi·ans before Asa and
before Judah, and the E·thi·opians
took to flight. 13 And Asa
and the people that were with
himkeptpursuingthemasfaras
Gerar, r and those of the E·thi·opi·ans
continued falling down till
there was no one alive of them;
for they were broken to pieces
before Jehovah s and before his
camp. t Afterward they carried off
a very great deal of spoil. u
14 Further, they struck all the
cities round about Gerar, for the
dread v of Jehovah had come to be
upon them; and they went plunl
