Social Media Thug Life
I’ve given up social
media for the New Year
and am trying to make
friends outside Facebook
while applying the same
principles.
Every day, I walk
down the street and tell
passersby what I’ve eaten,
how I feel, what I
did the night before, and
what I will do tomorrow.
Then I give them
pictures of my family,
my dog, and me gardening.
I also listen to their
conversations and tell them
I love them.
And it works. I already
have three people
following me — two police
officers and a psychiatrist.
Arden Old Timers Rodeo
I have lived in Arden area just 6 miles south of Colville,
Washington for over ten years. I serve as Pastor of the Arden Bible
Church, and I decided to go to the Arden Old Timers Rodeo.
I am glad I went on May 21, 2016. The last rodeo I attended
was at the North Dakota State Penitentiary. The ones on the WILD
COW RIDING were the inmates (prisoners) who were doing this
riding. The prison is in Bismarck, North Dakota where I was Chaplain
at the time.
Both here in Arden and in North Dakota the event “rodeos”
were very well done. First Corinthians 14:40 says “ Let all things be
done decently and in order.”
IT’S AMAZING WHAT A CREW OF 15 CAN DO!
Most people are aware of the BSA programs for Cub Scouts (Packs) and Boy Scouts (Troops) but are
not so familiar with Venturers (Crews). Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of
America for young men and women who are 14 years old (or 13 years old and have completed the eighth
grade) and under 21 years old. Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people
mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults, with an emphasis in adventure,
leadership, personal growth, and service. All youth and adults are trained about personal safety and youth
protection from the beginning. At least one male & one female adult leader are present at all activities.
Venturers learn the Boy Scout Oath & Law as all other Boy Scouts but the Venturing Motto is Lead the
Adventure. They have many awards they can earn individually or as a group. Venturers are not merit
badge or camping driven, but encouraged to have new experiences. They can camp every month if they
choose, it’s up to them. Teens who have the same interest like hiking, horsemanship, basketball, climbing,
camping, canoeing (anything) can start a Crew so they will regularly do activities together.
Venturing Crew 764 of Davenport, WA started in March 2015 and is thriving! They are chartered by
Zion Lutheran Church of Davenport. The Crew typically meets once a month to plan upcoming activites,
has one activity every month, does service projects regularly, and fundraisers as needed. They have 9
active Venturers and 6 active adults. They are a general interest Crew since they have whitewater rafters
to video game players. They have hiked, camped, played video games, toured Buck Knives, dug garnets,
went to Scarywood, visited Seattle for 5 days during spring break (aquarium, harbor cruise, UW campus
tour, science center, Chihuly Garden & Glass, Space Needle, EMP Museum, monorail, GameWorks, Emerald
City Comicon, law firm tour, zoo), attended the play “Mulan”, enjoyed the Deep Creek Civil War
Reenactment, and participated in the Reardan Mule Days Parade. They have also done over 10 service
projects. Find the Crew on facebook.com/VenturingCrew764.
The upcoming City of Davenport Red, White, & BOOM! Family Celebration on July 4 is their HUGE
service project for the year. 8 Venturers and 6 adults have been planning this event since February and
hope that the community will support their efforts. All activities are at the Davenport Sports Complex at
Hwy 2 & McInnis Rd. (27242 McInnis Rd., Davenport). The day starts with the Color Me Patriotic 5K
Run at 8am and costs $20. The FREE Celebration is from 3pm - 9pm which includes wet & dry activities
for all ages. Enjoy inflatables, water slides, bounce house, sponge toss, giant Jenga, bean bag toss,
croquet, badminton, tug-of-war, face painting, crafts and more! Enjoy pulled pork sandwiches, german
sausages, hot dogs, walking tacos and more (Crew fundraiser). There will be LOTS of door prizes all day
and you need not be present to win, just give your name at the Information Table. There are entry fees
for 2 activities that have big prizes (over $100 value): 4pm Diaper Derby $5 (non-walking babies crawl to
parent in a race) and 6pm Watermelon Eating $5 (eat as much as you can in 2 minutes). After 9pm, light
off your own fireworks on the baseball field. Find details on facebook.com/RedWhiteBoomDavenport or
THE WELL ARMED WOMAN SPOKANE CHAPTER TO HOST SURVIVAL MINDSET ROADSHOW
WITH SPOKANE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND SPORTSMAN’S WAREHOUSE
Spokane, WA Friday, July 8th. The Spokane Chapter of The Well Armed Woman is hosting “Enhancing
the Survival Mindset Roadshow” with the Spokane Police Department and Sportsman’s Warehouse.
The Survival Mindset Roadshow is an interactive seminar that covers topics related to situational awareness,
pre-planning, workplace safety and self-defense. The seminar takes place Friday, July 8th at 6pm
at Sportsman’s Warehouse 6720 N. Division Street and is designed to enhance safety in all arenas of life.
The seminar is open to women of all ages and is an excellent opportunity to learn more about The Well
Armed Woman (TWAW) while learning some essential defensive skills from Spokane Police.
TWAW Spokane Chapter holds monthly events at Sportsman’s Warehouse and Spokane Rifle Club. Spokane’s
TWAW chapter has more than 50 active members. It is led by Kaery Dudenhofer, a female firearms
instructor and owner of Kaery Concealed, a local self-defense training company. Kaery is passionate
about empowering families to defend themselves. Kaery founded the Spokane chapter of TWAW to give
women of all experience levels the opportunity to be introduced to issues important to women shooters,
learn self-defense, and to acquire gun-handling skills in a safe and supportive environment.
With the upcoming election, gun ownership and the complex laws surrounding the use of firearms is a
significant topic around the nation. A recent Gallop Poll reported that 23% of women personally own
firearms. With the number of women firearm owners at such high levels, women are eager to learn and
practice with other women. For a woman new to shooting, the very male driven firearm industry can be
intimidating.
TWAW is a national organization with more than 280 chapters in 49 states. The purpose of the organization
is to educate, equip, and empower women while creating women-friendly shooting and self-defense
opportunities. Women interested in learning more can contact Kaery at info@KaeryConcealed.com or
visit the chapter’s Facebook @SpokaneTWAW.
flocked to the Chautauqua grounds to hear and
see lecturers, musicians, artists, actors, explorers,
evangelists, poets and presidents. It became so successful,
that traveling Chautauqua set out by rail
to bring this unique form of entertainment to the
nation’s hinterlands. Huge tents were set up and
the programs lasted ten days and nights. President
Teddy Roosevelt once declared, “Chautauqua is the
most American thing in America!” The New York
site continues to draw thousands of visitors to the
compound each summer.
Community Celebrations adopted the concept of
Chautauqua for Chewelah in 1974, simplified the
spelling of the name to Chataqua, and condensed the
entertainment to three and one half days. Ranked
as the third largest event of its kind in the State of
Washington, Chewelah’s CHATAQUA continues to
attract over 50,000 visitors to this fun festival for
folks of all ages.
TIME WARP 1800’S:
WHAT A GREAT IDEA!
Westbound travelers of Highway 2 slowly cruise into Davenport, Washington. Their eyes are drawn to the interesting array of
old-timey edifices of the Black Bear Motel and Antiques. They become enticed by the nostalgia and unusual décor, and succumb to their
curiosity. Suddenly, the travelers have entered the 1800s.
Kim and Mark Elwood moved to Davenport in 2003. At that time, when they purchased the motel, it needed many improvements
and repairs. “We knew we wanted to drastically change the way it looked, because it is one of the first impressions of Davenport when
entering from the East,” said Kim. The design ideas came from the old pioneer days, and the process was very time-consuming. “I spent
days at the Davenport Museum going through albums, trying to make our place resemble buildings that were here in the 1800’s”.
The Elwoods have been avid antique collectors for more than 35 years. “Now we want to share our love of antiques with
others, in our new store featuring antiques, gifts and design!” Kim has spent countless hours creating handmade window treatments,
one-of-a-kind lighting displays, and applying faux wall painting designs. “I always look at an item and think, what can I make it into that
it never was before?”
Visitors will discover unique flooring, bedding, linens, and house wares, as well as displays and shelving up-cycled from everything
from cribs to boats to bathtubs. Every nook and cranny holds something interesting! Space-to-space and room-to-room, visitors will
find items for all areas of the home and garden. Do not miss the Tribal Room, including authentic rain sticks, dream catchers, pottery,
and more, handcrafted from Four Corners’ Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni designers.
The Black Bear’s wide range of collections from skilled crafters and designers are sure to inspire collectors and creative minds.
Kim and Mark cherish their patrons, and want them to have such a memorable experience that they’ll travel out of their way to repeatedly
visit the motel and antique store.
Reserve your 1800s themed room early, so you can begin and end your pioneer experience with Kim and Mark at the Black Bear
Motel and Antiques. Remember to bring your to bring your camera. The Black Bear is the perfect place to capture nostalgic memories
with your friends and family.
They are now kicking off the summer season. The hours are 12 pm to 8 pm, Wednesday through Saturday, until September. You
can contact them at 1-509-725-7700, or check out their website at www.blackbearmotel.com. You can also find them on Facebook.
A Beautiful Backyard Country Wedding
By Celia Hanning Therens & Gladys Hanning
There were exactly five hundred twenty five pickets
that my dad, Steven Hanning, cut, sanded, primed,
painted and replaced, to enclose our backyard wedding.
Hanging from the great willow tree, the arbors,
and umbrellas were handmade yellow, white and gray
tissue flowers.
Our bar, a vintage baby bathtub, filled with wine,
complemented by an antique green wooden wagon loaded
with galvanized washtubs, for our guests to grab an
icy cold drink.
My mother, Gladys Hanning and I used many of
the vintage treasures from our business, Junebug Furniture
and Design, along with a bazillion creative ideas to
personalize my wedding day. Both my mother and I are
passionate about vintage style. The key elements to our
design for a timeless look are comfort, simplicity, an appreciation
for the imperfect and a sense of practicality.
Here are some of our ideas that became a reality
and the backdrop for our special day;
The old pickets, from my families’ fence, were
repurposed to welcome and direct guests. My mother's
vintage bicycle, painted white was a perfect fit for my
color scheme, its basket filled with moss, and yellow
pansies, was tucked in a corner flowerbed. Leaning
against the fence was an old rusty bedspring, filled with
white paper holders and puffs of yellow cotton candy.
The ceremony took place in the simple but elegant
front yard of my parent’s home. I walked down the
path on my father's arm, where my soon to be husband,
Josh waited for me at the front porch. After vows were
exchanged, the guests proceeded to the backyard, where
they were welcomed with lemonades with the cutest
yellow straws, ready for guests to sip and begin the
evening. A hand-stenciled banner gently flying in the
breeze was tied to the fence announcing "Just Married."
White lights were strung under the large willow
tree, and the trees bordering the backyard. There
were candles floating in the pool. All of these elements
created a magical setting! The party came to life under
an amazing white tent. Dinner tables were set with fresh
white table linens and handmade yellow linen napkins.
Vintage bottles in all shapes and sizes were filled with
flowers picked from the garden for centerpieces.
The "country buffet" table was amazingly beautiful.
Bright summer salads, breads, and main courses
were arranged amid two five feet long vintage galvanized
tray centerpieces filled with white tissue and fresh
lemons, keeping with the yellow & white theme.
Our menu as follows:
Salade Nicoise, from Julia Child's Cook Book, Tomato,
Mozzarella, & Basil Salad, Fruit Salad & Marshmallow
Dip, Teriyaki Beef Strips, Teriyaki Chicken
Wings, Grilled Lemon Chicken, Grilled Corn picked
fresh from the garden, and the most amazing Cheesy
Garlic Bread.
I've included this simple and delicious recipe, with
permission of our dear friend Lynn Guier:
1 loaf of sourdough bread, cut bread in half
horizontally,
1 stick of butter, heated on low, then let butter cool
slightly
Add 8 garlic cloves, minced or chopped, add 1/2 cup
Le Gout instant cheddar cheese, or a little more for
your liking.
Spoon the garlic cheese mixture onto both sides of
bread and broil for 3 minutes,
Slice crosswise and serve warm, it's fabulous!
As our tired and happy guests left through the rose
covered arbor, they filled old-timey take-out boxes with
colorful gumballs, lemon drops and taffy to take home
as a reminder of the day.
Enthusiastic family and friends prepared all the
food, out of sheer love and a desire for a creative hand
in the festivities.
From the beginning, my mother , father and I, worked
together to transform the family home and grounds into
a beautiful setting for a summer wedding in the name of
love, and the day resulted in a class act.
find funding? Tri County
Economic Development
District (TEDD)
helps small businesses
become strong and well
supported by providing
financing for existing
and start-up businesses
which do not qualify for
a traditional loan.
Peter Griessman, a client
of TEDD and owner
of Woodworker Network
in Addy, WA, explained
that “without TEDD, we
would not have received
funding to grow our
business.” Since 1984,
TEDD and the Rural Opportunities
Loan Fund
have been helping small
businesses thrive by utilizing
both state and federal
funding. Steve Hedrick,
owner of Northern
Ales, stated that TEDD
was instrumental in providing
expansion funding
for his business. Hedrick
explained, “TEDD
has connected us to resources
that we would
not have found on our
own, and were helpful
in finding creative solutions
to our needs.”
Loans of $5,000
to $250,000 are typically
available, depending on
your business’s location
and the intended
use of the funds. Also,
the loan amount may
be determined based on
the business’s ability to
meet applicable job creation
guidelines. TEDD
can finance a maximum
of 75 percent of the total
business project.
“Laughter
~ Victor Borge
DOES IT ONLY COME
IN BLACK?
My five-year-old son
is crazy about cars, so I
took him to his first car
show. He loved seeing all
the different models and
brands and gushed over
the big engines, the colors,
and even the wheels. But
the car he was most impressed
with was a hearse.
“Mom!” he shouted.
“Look at all this storage!”
CHICKEN JOKE
Q: Why did the
chicken go to the séance?
A: To get to the other
side.
CLUCK LIFE
Q: Why does a chicken
coop have two doors?
A: If it had four, it
would be a chicken sedan.
SO… WHAT IS IT?
Q: What do you call
a parade of rabbits hopping
backwards?
A: a receding hareline.
WHAT DO YOU-
CALL…
Q: What do you call
an old snowman?
A: Water!
WHAT THE HECK
Q: What does Charles
Dickens keep in his spice
rack?
A: The best of
thymes, the worst of
thymes.
CATS AND COMMAS
Q: What’s the different
between a cat and a
comma?
A: A cat has claws at
the end of paws; A comma
is a pause at the end of a
clause.
ABOUT ARTISTS
Q: Why do artists
constantly feel cold?
A: Because they’re
surrounded by drafts.
JURASSIC
Q: Which dinosaur
knew the most words?
A: The thesaurus.
KIDS
Dr. J. Sloetjes, Fort
McMurray, CN
After cleaning my
five-year-old patient’s
teeth, I accompanied him
to the reception area, only
to see him struggle with
the oak door.
“It’s heavy, isn’t it?”
I asked.
“Yes,” he said. “Is
that so children can’t escape?”
NEW INVENTION!
I was visiting a
friend who could not find
her cordless phone. After
several minutes of searching,
her young daughter
said, “You know what they
should invent? A phone
that stays connected to its
base so it never gets lost.”
MATURE FUN
As I was treating my
daughter and her family to
the buffet at a casino, all
the bells and whistles for a
winning slot machine began
to go off.
My seven-yearold
grandson was awed.
“Wow!” yelled Casey.
“This is like Chuck E.
Cheese for old people.”
BEING TESTED
When my eight-yearold
asked how I knew I
was pregnant, I told her
I had taken a pregnancy
test. “Oh,” she said. “What
questions were on the
test?”
HOPING FOR
THE BEST
My second graders
were assigned the task of
writing thank-you cards
to soldiers serving in the
Middle East. One of them
wrote, “Thank you for protecting
us! I hope we win!”
REASON FOR
RETURN
I was at the customer-service
desk, returning
a pair of jeans that was too
tight.
“Was anything
wrong with them?” the
clerk asked.
“Yes,” I said. “They
hurt my feelings.”
MYSTERY SOLVED!
My collection of vintage
kitchen utensils includes
one whose intended
purpose was always a mystery.
It looks like a cross
between a metal slotted
spoon and a spatula, so I
use it as both. When not in
use, it is prominently displayed
in a decorative ceramic
utensil caddy in my
kitchen.
The mystery of the
spoon/spatula was recently
solved when I found one in
its original packaging at a
rummage sale.
It’s a pooper-scooper.
COFFEE SHOP
When asked for his
name by the coffee shop
clerk, my brother-in-law
answered, “Marc, with a
C.”
Minutes later, he was
handed his coffee with his
name written on the side:
Cark.
HE CAN FLY, BUT…
A woman called our
airline customer-service
desk asking if she could
take her dog on board.
“Sure,” I said, “as
long as you provide
your own kennel.” I further
explained that the
kennel needed to be large
enough for the dog to stand
up, sit down, turn around,
and roll over.
The customer was
flummoxed: “I’ll never be
able to teach him all of that
by tomorrow!”
PIZZA PERILS
A Twitter exchange
between an angry customer
and an apologetic
Domino’s Pizza:
Customer: Soooo I
ordered a Pizza & it came
with no Toppings on it or
anything, It’s Just Bread!
Domino’s: We’re sorry
to hear about this!
Customer (minutes
later): Never mind, I
opened the pizza upside
down :/
After a talking
sheepdog gets all the
sheep in the pen, he
reports back to the farmer:
“All 40 accounted for.”
“But I only have 36
sheep,” says the farmer.
“I know,” says the
sheepdog. “But I rounded
them up.”
CAT THUG LIFE
My cat just walked
up to the paper shredder
and said, “Teach me everything
you know.”
BESTED BY A BIRD
Wandering inside a
pet store, I stopped in front
of a birdcage to admire a
parakeet. We watched each
other for a few minutes before
it asked, “Can’t you
talk?”
TOUGH QUESTION
By George Carlin
What should you do
when you see an endangered
animal eating an endangered
plant?
MAKE IT TWO
A zookeeper is ordering
new animals. As he
fills out the forms, he types
“two mongeese.” That
doesn’t look right, so he
tries “two mongoose,” then
“two mongooses.” Giving
up, he types, “One mongoose,
and while you’re at
it, send another one.”
IT’S A ZOO OUT
THERE!
When a zoo’s gorilla
dies, the zookeeper hires
an actor to don a costume
and act like an ape until the
zoo can get another one.
In the cage, the actor
makes faces, swings
around, and draws a huge
crowd. He then crawls
across a partition and atop
the lion’s cage, infuriating
the animal. But the actor
stays in character—until
he loses his grip and falls
into the lion’s cage.
Terrified, the actor
shouts, “Help! Help me!”
Too late.
The lion pounces,
opens its massive jaws,
and whispers, “Shut up!
Do you want to get us both
fi r e d?!”
