TIME WARP 1800’S:
WHAT A GREAT IDEA!
Westbound travelers of Highway 2 slowly cruise into Davenport, Washington. Their eyes are drawn to the interesting array of
old-timey edifices of the Black Bear Motel and Antiques. They become enticed by the nostalgia and unusual décor, and succumb to their
curiosity. Suddenly, the travelers have entered the 1800s.
Kim and Mark Elwood moved to Davenport in 2003. At that time, when they purchased the motel, it needed many improvements
and repairs. “We knew we wanted to drastically change the way it looked, because it is one of the first impressions of Davenport when
entering from the East,” said Kim. The design ideas came from the old pioneer days, and the process was very time-consuming. “I spent
days at the Davenport Museum going through albums, trying to make our place resemble buildings that were here in the 1800’s”.
The Elwoods have been avid antique collectors for more than 35 years. “Now we want to share our love of antiques with
others, in our new store featuring antiques, gifts and design!” Kim has spent countless hours creating handmade window treatments,
one-of-a-kind lighting displays, and applying faux wall painting designs. “I always look at an item and think, what can I make it into that
it never was before?”
Visitors will discover unique flooring, bedding, linens, and house wares, as well as displays and shelving up-cycled from everything
from cribs to boats to bathtubs. Every nook and cranny holds something interesting! Space-to-space and room-to-room, visitors will
find items for all areas of the home and garden. Do not miss the Tribal Room, including authentic rain sticks, dream catchers, pottery,
and more, handcrafted from Four Corners’ Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni designers.
The Black Bear’s wide range of collections from skilled crafters and designers are sure to inspire collectors and creative minds.
Kim and Mark cherish their patrons, and want them to have such a memorable experience that they’ll travel out of their way to repeatedly
visit the motel and antique store.
