Page 4 Huckleberry Press June 30, 2016 IT’S AMAZING WHAT A CREW OF 15 CAN DO! Most people are aware of the BSA programs for Cub Scouts (Packs) and Boy Scouts (Troops) but are not so familiar with Venturers (Crews). Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 years old (or 13 years old and have completed the eighth grade) and under 21 years old. Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults, with an emphasis in adventure, leadership, personal growth, and service. All youth and adults are trained about personal safety and youth protection from the beginning. At least one male & one female adult leader are present at all activities. Venturers learn the Boy Scout Oath & Law as all other Boy Scouts but the Venturing Motto is Lead the Adventure. They have many awards they can earn individually or as a group. Venturers are not merit badge or camping driven, but encouraged to have new experiences. They can camp every month if they choose, it’s up to them. Teens who have the same interest like hiking, horsemanship, basketball, climbing, camping, canoeing (anything) can start a Crew so they will regularly do activities together. Venturing Crew 764 of Davenport, WA started in March 2015 and is thriving! They are chartered by Zion Lutheran Church of Davenport. The Crew typically meets once a month to plan upcoming activites, has one activity every month, does service projects regularly, and fundraisers as needed. They have 9 active Venturers and 6 active adults. They are a general interest Crew since they have whitewater rafters to video game players. They have hiked, camped, played video games, toured Buck Knives, dug garnets, went to Scarywood, visited Seattle for 5 days during spring break (aquarium, harbor cruise, UW campus tour, science center, Chihuly Garden & Glass, Space Needle, EMP Museum, monorail, GameWorks, Emerald City Comicon, law firm tour, zoo), attended the play “Mulan”, enjoyed the Deep Creek Civil War Reenactment, and participated in the Reardan Mule Days Parade. Family Celebration on July 4 is their HUGE service project for the year. 8 Venturers and 6 adults have been planning this event since February and hope that the community will support their efforts. All activities are at the Davenport Sports Complex at Hwy 2 & McInnis Rd. (27242 McInnis Rd., Davenport). The day starts with the Color Me Patriotic 5K Run at 8am and costs $20. The FREE Celebration is from 3pm - 9pm which includes wet & dry activities for all ages. Enjoy inflatables, water slides, bounce house, sponge toss, giant Jenga, bean bag toss, croquet, badminton, tug-of-war, face painting, crafts and more! Enjoy pulled pork sandwiches, german sausages, hot dogs, walking tacos and more (Crew fundraiser). There will be LOTS of door prizes all day and you need not be present to win, just give your name at the Information Table. There are entry fees for 2 activities that have big prizes (over $100 value): 4pm Diaper Derby $5 (non-walking babies crawl to parent in a race) and 6pm Watermelon Eating $5 (eat as much as you can in 2 minutes). After 9pm, light off your own fireworks on the baseball field. THE WELL ARMED WOMAN SPOKANE CHAPTER TO HOST SURVIVAL MINDSET ROADSHOW WITH SPOKANE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND SPORTSMAN’S WAREHOUSE Spokane, WA Friday, July 8th. The Spokane Chapter of The Well Armed Woman is hosting “Enhancing the Survival Mindset Roadshow” with the Spokane Police Department and Sportsman’s Warehouse. The Survival Mindset Roadshow is an interactive seminar that covers topics related to situational awareness, pre-planning, workplace safety and self-defense. The seminar takes place Friday, July 8th at 6pm at Sportsman’s Warehouse 6720 N. Division Street and is designed to enhance safety in all arenas of life. The seminar is open to women of all ages and is an excellent opportunity to learn more about The Well Armed Woman (TWAW) while learning some essential defensive skills from Spokane Police. TWAW Spokane Chapter holds monthly events at Sportsman’s Warehouse and Spokane Rifle Club. Spokane’s TWAW chapter has more than 50 active members. It is led by Kaery Dudenhofer, a female firearms instructor and owner of Kaery Concealed, a local self-defense training company. Kaery is passionate about empowering families to defend themselves. Kaery founded the Spokane chapter of TWAW to give women of all experience levels the opportunity to be introduced to issues important to women shooters, learn self-defense, and to acquire gun-handling skills in a safe and supportive environment. With the upcoming election, gun ownership and the complex laws surrounding the use of firearms is a significant topic around the nation. A recent Gallop Poll reported that 23% of women personally own firearms. With the number of women firearm owners at such high levels, women are eager to learn and practice with other women. For a woman new to shooting, the very male driven firearm industry can be intimidating. TWAW is a national organization with more than 280 chapters in 49 states. The purpose of the organization is to educate, equip, and empower women while creating women-friendly shooting and self-defense opportunities.
