THE CURRICULUM The national curriculum is taught at Woodchurch Road Primary School. Our teachers work hard to ensure the curriculum is as stimulating and exciting as possible, so that the children enjoy learning and are inspired to become lifelong learners. We have built in many links with the local area and we are lucky enough to have a wealth of resources on our doorstep and we therefore plan to continue taking our children on as many trips as possible, to excite and interest them in their learning and to create a real life context to learning. Planning for the Foundation 2 follows the Foundation Stage Curriculum. The areas of learning are : Personal Social development, Physical Development, Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and design. All children follow a broad enjoyable and enriched curriculum. The National Curriculum is followed and consists of :- Core Subjects : English Maths Foundation Subjects : Art Science Music R.E. P.E. PMFL I.T. D.T. PHSE Geography History Teachers in the same year groups work together to ensure consistency and parity of experiences. The Foundation subjects are now delivered as themed and linked units of work, for example, the Year 5 children enhance their knowledge about the Tudors through art, music, dance and design technology. We encourage the children to use the skills taught in other areas of the curriculum e.g. English and Geography. IT is a strong feature of all our teaching. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards. We use a range of different methods to help your child learn and prepare for their life long journey. Equal Opportunities At Woodchurch Road Primary School the children learn that all people are treated with respect regardless of race, gender, class creed or abilities. Children will learn about other peoples lives, beliefs and be given a chance to consider the concerns of others. We believe that it is only through understanding that people can learn tolerance and be able to actively celebrate the differences between us and all that enrich our lives. SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS Whatever difficulties any child at Woodchurch Road Primary School may have, the school aims through its SEN policy to encourage and recognise achievement. Definition of Special Educational Needs A child has special needs if (s)he has a difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A child has a learning difficulty if (s)he has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age or has a disability which either prevents or hinders the child from making use of educational facilities of a kind provided for children of the same age in schools within the area of the LA. In catering for children with SEN the Governing Body at Woodchurch Road Primary School aims to: 1. Promote an early identification of children with special needs. 2. Help the child with SEN to fulfil his/her potential. 3. Promote an awareness of children with special needs. 4. Foster good relations between staff, parents, support services and other outside agencies. 5. Ensure access to the National Curriculum and to offer modifications and disapplications only when necessary. The Governing Body has stated in its policy document that they will: Do their best to ensure that the necessary provision is made for any pupil who has SEN. Ensure that teachers in the school are aware of the importance of identifying and providing for those pupils who have SEN. A governor in charge of SEN has been appointed who invites regular feedback at both committee and full governing body level. This governor also evaluates the success of the education provided for children with SEN. The school will identify a child’s needs at the earliest possible moment and take appropriate action within its resources and enlist support of parents and appropriate agencies. The responsibility has been delegated to the Special Needs Co-ordinator, which is at present Miss Short. A copy of the full policy is available in school and further information may be obtained from Miss Short. Children with special needs will be offered extra help in the classroom by their class teacher and/or a teaching assistant who will take advice on preparing appropriate programmes of work and strategies. Some children will also be assigned time each week when they can work in a small group. Some subjects are taught in ability groups which allows pupils needs to be met in smaller teaching groups. Numeracy and literacy are priority subjects. SEN must be addressed in the best way resources allow. The school will endeavour to maximise the efficient use of resources and expertise available in the interest of all pupils with SEN. All children have equal access to a broad and balanced curriculum. For children with SEN it will be necessary to differentiate work to enable them to work at an appropriate level. Children with SEN will be able to take part in all school activities unless their participation would adversely affect the health and safety of either themselves or others. The Governors of Woodchurch Road Primary School encourage and support regular Inservice training for the Headteacher, the SENCO and class teachers and Teaching Assistants. The SENCO will lead and liaise with the inservice training of staff. The school will, whenever possible , work in partnership with the parents, taking into account the needs of their child(ren). Once a child has been identified as having a special need, parents will be informed and invited in to discuss how these needs might be addressed. The child’s progress will then be monitored as he/she moves through the school. Pupils With A Disability Woodchurch Road has a very successful history in providing mainstream education for pupils with a disability. We currently have facilities to assist access to the school. Ramps have been installed for pupils in wheelchairs. A lift has been fitted in school to enable disabled access between floors. Help is readily sought from outside agencies and the school maintains excellent relationships with them. Contact is usually made by the SENCO . Apart from Learning Support Services, parental permission is always obtained before contact regarding an individual child is made.
