Man drowns trying to
save Teenager
A man who tried to rescue a
16-year-old boy from drowning,
himself drowned in Kalena Agrahara
lake along Bannerghatta
Road. Hulimavu police said on
Wednesday morning, Hrudayaraj
bought a second hand
tractor. In the evening, he took
it to the lake to wash it. There,
his son John Prakash, 16, tried
to reverse the vehicle. However,
he lost control of the vehicle and
both sank into the water. Seeing
this, passersby informed the Fire
and Emergency services. However,
before they could reach the
scene, Anandappa jumped into
the water to try and rescue John.
But, 10 minutes after he dived
into the water, Anandappa did
not come out. In the meantime,
the fire rescue team arrived at
the spot and found Anandappa.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital
but was declared brought
dead. Although a search operation
for John Prakash continued
till dark, the team was unable to
locate his body. The search will
resume on Thursday morning.
Retired Principal Files
Case against MU Vice
Chancellor
Police have registered a case
of abuse against Mysore University
Vice Chancellor for abusing
a retired principal of one of the
institutions affiliated to Manasagangothri.
In his complaint, S Siddegowda
, a retired principal of
Manasagangothri educational
was abused by the VC in front of
many people on July 8th evening.
The complainant said that he
had gone to the VC’s office seeking
a job for his close friend’s son
on temporary basis. He alleged
that the VC made him wait for
more than 2 hours and when
he came out of his office, the VC
abused him in front of many people
saying that the candidate recommended
would destroy the
entire university.
Disturbed by the development,
Siddegowda lodged a
complaint at the Laxmiuram police
station. The police have given
an NCR copy to the complainant
and assured him.
Driver killed by a
speeding Cab
A car driver conversing over
mobile phone on the national
highway met his tragic end after
being hit by a speeding car near
Poinachi petrol bunk on Thursday,
July 14. Madhusudan (32)
of Kundakuhi Marunthadka is
the deceased. He was returning
to Kasaragod from temple town
of Kollur with fellow passengers.
He parked his car near the petrol
bunk in Poinachi and took a
stroll to have a conversation on
his mobile phone. At the same
time a speeding car hit him and
he was dragged to couple of meters.
Though he was rushed to a
nearby hospital immediately, he
did not survive and eventually
died due to grievous injuries.
Govt to extend deadlines
for bars and pubs
to 1am
The government is set to extend
the deadline for bars and
pubs till from 11.30 p.m. to 1 a.m.
on all days of the week. While
tipplers are cheering, residents
of Indiranagar and Koramangala
are opposing the move. Both residential
neighbourhoods have
a high concentration of restaurants
and pubs.
Members of RWAs say that
many of the outlets operating in
their neighbourhoods are illegal,
lack trade licenses and have
come up in violation of the BDA
zoning regulations. Earlier in July,
14 RWAs across Bengaluru got
together to oppose commercialisation
of their localities.
PREMATURE TERMINATION
Both ruling and opposition
parties had stamped
their feet over the issue
despite an all-party meet-
OF MONSOON SESSION?
ing convened by Assembly
Speaker Koliwad, which
failed to convince opposition
parties to withdraw
the agitation.
If the ongoing tug-of-war
between the ruling party
and the opposition over
DySP Ganapathi suicide
case continues, then the
Monsoon session is likely
to end abruptly by Friday
itself. The opposition parties
have decided to continue
overnight protest inside
assembly hall on Thursday
too, leaving the ruling party
DYSP KALLAPPA CASE: PRAVEEN KHANDYA
TO BE BOOKED UNDER GOONDA ACT
Bengaluru: Chief Minister
Siddaramaiah said that
Praveen Khandya, the Vishwa
Hindu Parishat (VHP)
leader who is one of the
five suspects in the suicide
of Chikkamagalur Deputy
Superintendent of Police
(DySP) Kallappa Handibag
will be booked under the
Goonda Act.
Speaking at the Assembly,
the CM said that the
government had sufficient
evidence to book Khandya
under the Goonda Act (the
Karnataka Prevention of
Dangerous Activities of
Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders,
Gamblers, Goondas,
Immoral Traffic Offenders,
Slum-Grabbers and Video
or Audio Pirates Act).
Khandya has as many as 32
cases pending against him.
Siddaramaiah further
said that the CID is investigating
the case and will
take action against everyone
involved in the case.
The Chief Minister pointed
out that it was not right to
compare Kallappa’s death
with MK Ganapathy’s demise.
Appropriate action
would be taken once the
CID submits the report, he
added.
Praveen Khandya’s anticipatory
bail plea hearing
was put off by the District
Sessions Court at Chikkamagaluru
in the abduction
case of H M Tejas involving
DySP Kallappa Handibag to
July 16. Khandya is still absconding.
Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah
has also assured that
they would look into the
possibility of offering a job
on compassionate grounds
to Kallappa’s wife but there
was no provision to give
compensation to the kin of
officers who commit suicide.
Anupama Shenoy case:
On the controversy relating
to the resignation of Anupama
Shenoy as DySP, he
said she had cited personal
reasons for quitting. “If she
was under any kind of pressure
from the liquor lobby,
she could have informed
her senior colleagues and
the government. But she
has not done that. It appears
that she does not
want to serve in the police
KARNATAKA CALLS FLOOD
ALERT AS KRISHNA OVERFLOWS
A flood alert has been
issued in many villages of
two border districts of Karnataka
after excess rain water
was released from Maharashtra
into the Krishna
River that flows through
the state as downstream.
“People living in villages
on the banks of Krishna and
low-lying areas in Bagalkot
and Belagavi districts have
been put on alert after Maharashtra
released excess
water into the river following
heavy rains in its
catchment areas” the official
from the state natural
disaster monitoring centre
said to media.
Bagalkot Deputy Commissioner
P.A. Meghannavar
advised the people in
Jamkhandi and Bilagi taluks
of the district to move
to safer places from the
river banks to avoid being
affected in the event of
DEADLINE EVASION: AADHAR AND RATION
CARD LINKING STILL A DISTANT DREAM
Mysuru: The deadline
for linking ration cards
with Aadhaar numbers extended
a couple of times,
but the Mysuru district is
yet to achieve 100 per cent
linkage.
The Department of Food
and Civil Supplies has made
it compulsory for all ration
card holders in the State,
including those with Above
Poverty Line (APL) cards,
to link the cards with Aadhaar
numbers. This measure
was taken to remove
fake card holders and ensure
that only genuine beneficiaries
avail benefits under
the Public Distribution
System (PDS).
According to the data
provided by the department,
out of 607434 ration
card holders in the district,
588485 have linked their
card with Aadhaar number.
K. Rameshwarappa,
Deputy Director, Food and
in fix.
department,” he added.
Siddaramaiah denied that
the Ballari Superintendent
of Police had refused to
accept her papers for citing
the liquor lobby as the
reason for her resignation.
All efforts made by the government
to contact her and
convince her to withdraw
the resignation went in vain
as she remained inaccessible.
He also turned down
the demand by Opposition
parties to reinstate her.
Shikha case: Siddaramaiah
admitted that Congress
worker Marigowda
flooding.”As 1.7 lakh cusecs
of water has been released
from Koyna Dam in Satara
district in the neighbouing
state into the river, measures
are being taken to
prevent any untoward incident
if more water is released,”
said Meghannavar
to the media from Bagalkot.
As the fourth biggest river
(1,300 km) in terms water
inflows and river basin
area in the country, Krishna
originates in the rich biodiversity
hotspot of Western
Ghats near Mahabaleshwar
in Maharashtra and passes
through Karnataka, Telangana
and Andhra Pradesh,
flowing out into the Bay of
Bengal. It is also a major
source of irrigation in the
four southern states.
Civil Supplies, Mysuru, said
that linking of ration cards
with Aadhaar numbers is
mandatory and those who
The session must have
continued till the month
end, but due to the chaos it
may be ended on Friday.
The opposition has
demanded resignation
of Minister K J George in
connection to Ganapathi
suicide case and has also
pressed for CBI probe, both
of which have been rejected
by the ruling Congress
party. In the interim, the
high command called upon
George.
Meanwhile, the ruling
party managed to pass
three bills amid chaos in
the house.
abusing Mysuru Deputy
Commissioner C Shikha recently
was a mistake. “I
admit it is a mistake. If a
person belongs to my party
or any other, it is not proper
to treat an officer like
that. Many of the opposition
leaders said he is my
close aide. I know him since
1983. I took him to task later”
the Chief Minister said.
He reiterated that Shikha
is a good officer and hence
she has been serving in the
same post for the past three
years.
Bridges across the river
and its tributaries in
low-laying areas are overflowing
with rain water,
disrupting vehicular traffic
in the districts.
Though heavy rains receded
in coastal and south
interior areas of the state
since Tuesday, moderate to
light rains are likely to occur
in north interior parts
of the state during the next
24 hours, while one or two
spells of rain have been
forecast for Bengaluru and
its neighbourhood, with
strong surface winds under
cloudy sky.
Chikkodi recorded 11
cm rainfall, followed by 7
cm each in Kadra in Uttara
Kannada district and Kudachi
in Belagavi district.
do so immediately to avail
their quota of ration. v
TV, BHAJANS RING THE WALLS
OF ASSEMBLY AS OPPOSITION
CONTINUES OVER NIGHT STRIKE
After the opposition
parties declared overnight
strike in the Assembly hall
on Wednesday, the legislators
of BJP and JD(S)
watched television, sang
bhajans and had dinner together
on Wednesday night.
They began their day-night
dharna in both the Houses
of the legislature seeking
resignation of Bengaluru
Development Minister,
K J George on DySP Ganapathi
suicide case.
Bed sheets, blankets,
pillows and dinner were
provided by Secretariats
of the Assembly and Council
for their overnight stay.
The MLC’s were requested
to have dinner which had
chapati, rice dishes and
gravy, at a room adjoining
the Council hall.
The overnight stay at the
assembly hall by legislators
is nothing
new to Karnataka
assembly.
The opposition
had spent a
wholevc night
on March 17,
2015 seeking a
CBI probe into
the death of
IAS officer D K
Ravi. The then
KJP president B
S Yeddyurappa had staged
an overnight protest in November
2013 demanding
the extension of ‘Shaadi
Baghya’ scheme to all communities.
The session was
then held in Belagavi. Similarly,
opposition parties
had staged overnight protest
on July 12, 2010 over
the illegal mining issue.
“NO HOPE OF JUSTICE FROM CID OR THE JUDI-
CIARY” SAYS DYSP’S GANAPATI’S WIDOW
Kodagu: Addressing a
press conference at Kushalnagar
in the district on
Tuesday July 13, Pavana
said that she will be writing
to Prime Minister, Narendra
Modi, complaining against
the Congress government
in the state. She accused
the state government of
dithering in the matter of
taking action against those
who were responsible for
the death of Ganapati, who
had served state police department
efficiently and
diligently.
“I have no expectation of
getting justice from either
the criminal investigation
department (CID) probe or
the judicial probe expected
to be ordered by the government.
At the same time,
we demand for the judicial
probe to be conducted by
either Justice Santosh Hegde
or Justice Venkatachalaiah,
both of whom are
retired judges,” said DySP
Ganapati’s wife, Pavana.
“Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah,
is not registering
case against Minister
George, and two senior
officers of the police department
who caused the
death of my husband. CID
team, instead of recording
my statement, prepared a
report at their own whims
and fancies and the home
minister read out a report
in the assembly that was an
insult to me” she alleged.
The secretariat also deputed
medical staff, aside
from ensuring medicine
and ambulance services.
Jammers in both
the Houses were
switched off to
facilitate phone
calls by members.
Media was not
allowed into the
lobby. Both the
parties allowed
their women
legislators to go
home.
A majority
of the legislators
went home
to change or
get their night
clothes and returned.
However,
She stated that the entire
family is solidly backing her
in this issue and that she
draws courage and confidence
to complain to the
prime minister based on
this moral support.
George summoned by
high command: It is learnt
that in the light of political
upheavals in the state, Congress
high command has
asked minister, K J George,
to come to New Delhi. As
per information, he is leaving
to meet the leaders on
Thursday morning.
The name of the city
development minister has
emerged prominently in
the suicide case of deputy
superintendent of police,
Ganapati. Opposition parties,
who have been demanding
to drop George
from the ministry, have undertaken
round the clock
dharna in the legislature.
This has come as an embarrassment
both for the party
and its government in Karnataka.
Although the high command
has been briefed
about the development,
the top leaders want to get
explanations from George
personally before taking
a decision in the matter,
highly placed sources in the
party said.
CM misguiding house?
Some sources pointed out
that contrary to chief minister,
Siddaramaiah’s claim
JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy
did not take part in
the overnight dharna as he
left for Mysuru to resume
his son’s film shooting.
In November 2013, B
S Yeddyurappa, who was
then the KJP president had
staged an all-night dharna
for two nights demanding
an extension of ‘Shaadi
Baghya’ scheme to all
communities. Prior to that,
the Opposition parties had
staged a night dharna on
July 12, 2010 over the illegal
mining issue.
Dharna may end on Friday:
There was speculation
in political circles on
Wednesday that if the Opposition
continues with its
day-night dharna until Friday,
then the government
may get the budget proposals
and bills passed amid
the din and adjourn both
the Houses sine die. The
budget proposals have to
be passed before July 31 as
the legislature had only given
its approval for a fourmonth
vote-on-account in
March.
in the house on Wednesday
that DySP, Ganapati,
had not worked under inspector
general of police,
Pranab Mohanty. But, Ganapati
had in fact worked
under Mohanty twice.
When Mohanty was the
joint commissioner (west)
and additional police commissioner
in Bengaluru,
Ganapati had worked in Yeshwantpur
and Madiwala
police staions as inspector.
When Mohanty was working
as additional police
commissioner (crime), Ganapati
was working in Madiwala
station. During the
encounter death of a rowdy
named Prashant alias
Pachchi at Yeshwantpura in
2010, Pranab Mohanty had
investigated the allegation
that it was a fake encounter.
The case had then gone to
Lokayukta, by which time
Mohanty had been transferred
to Lokayukta. During
the controversial murder of
Rector, Fr Thomas, within
Yeshwantpura station limits,
Ganapati was inspector
of Yeshwantpur station
while Mohanty was joint
police commissioner.
Some claim that misleading
the assembly is
tantamount to breach of
privilege.
PADDY FOR NEEDY; CATHOLIC SABHA
TO GROW FOOD FOR POOR
Udupi: Catholic Sabha unit
at Sacred Heart Church in
Kolalgiri has started a unique
project of growing paddy in a
barren field and distributing
the rice after processing in
the mill among poor people
across all religions. Catholic
Sabha has ventured into such
an experiment for the first
time and intends to continue
it every year.
Nearly 60 members of
Catholic Sabha Kolalgiri led
by President Ashwin Roche
got down in the 55 cents barren
field near Arooru, Kenjebail
belonging to Vijayadas
Shetty on Sunday and planted
paddy saplings. The members
participated with vigour
and enthusiasm. The organization
has spent between Rs.
7,000 to Rs. 10,000 for the
purpose.
The members will participate
in cutting the full grown
paddy. The grass will be distributed
to the needy. After
which, paddy will be sent to
the rice mill for processing
and expected to yield nearly
10 quintals of rice. Udupi
diocese President Valerian
Fernandes, Zonal President
Steven Prakash Louis, visited
the fields and encouraged
the endeavour.
