New Roof Collapses in Storm Hartley Inducted to Society’s Wall of Fame
By Dustin Andrews
Baxter Springs – The Assembly
of God Church on Park
Avenue, behind the American
Bank has been through a lot
lately.
As many know the building
suffered some storm damage
resulting in the complete
over haul of the sanctuary (we
ran the full story a couple of
weeks ago).
Now after all the work that
has been done the new trusses
for the ceiling had just been
put up and along comes last
weeks nasty little storm with
Ronnie Carson with Dalton-Killinger Construction, can be seen through one of the many
broken windows attaching the boom to the wrecked trusses to pull them out of the sanctuary.
Riverton - An armed suspect
robbed the Riverton Quick Stop
late Monday night as the clerk
was closing the store around
10:00 p.m.
The suspect, who was captured
on video surveillance, brandished
a handgun as the clerk
exited the store to take out the
trash. He demanded she empty
the register and turn over the
money before fleeing with an
undisclosed amount of cash.
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office
investigators are releasing
still images of the suspect, who
was wearing a red motorcycle
helmet, black jacket, blue jeans
and light colored tennis shoes.
Baxter Springs – The Baxter
Springs Historical Society
and the Baxter Springs Heritage
Center honored Ross
C. Hartley Sunday as a new
member to their "Wall of
Fame".
The "Wall of Fame" is reserved
for natives of Baxter
Springs who have achieved
national or international notoriety
for achievements in
the arts, business, sports,
religion, or who otherwise
brought recognition to the
city through their accomplishments.
Living past recipients of
this honor include: Dr. Steve
Scott, Ben Craig, Dr. Hubert
Bird, Gene Bicknell and Hale
Irwin.
Hartley was added due to
his success with computerized
information technology.
His agency was the first Independent
Agency in Kansas to
completely computerize "inhouse"
to network all of the
agency's locations. In doing
so it became the model for
other agencies in the state.
The increasing interest in
information technology led
Hartley to form a partnership
with Jeff Fraser to create the
first public-private technology
partnership in government
services at the state level.
Kansas was the first state
to acquire the service of the
National Information Consortium
(NIC) to operate the
first statewide portal for conducting
citizen to government
business. NIC quickly followed
this success with contracts
in Nebraska, Arkansas,
Indiana and others until
achieving its current portal
business in 30 plus states in
the U.S., and the Federal
Government.
NIC and Hartley have been
providing services since before
there was a World Wide
Web and they were the first
FREE
Ross has served as a director
of NIC (EGOV, NASDAQ)
since its founding and is also
the longest serving director
of The Empire District Elect
Company (EDE). His service
includes: Past President of Indpendent
Insurance Agents of
Kansas, the District Level of
the Boy Scouts of America,
board member for the former
St. John's Regional Medical
Center, as well as other charitable
organizations.

Pokémon Go Fever Spreads to our Area
By Dustin Andrews
Baxter Springs - What began
as a video game 20+
years ago has turned into a
national phenomenon that is
either a great thing or going
to lead to the end of civilization
as we know it, ok it
might not be that bad. I'm
talking about Pokémon Go
the game that has broken all
kinds of records for sales and
digital downloads that is being
blamed for some broken
limbs as well.
The game is played around
the concept of "catching"
fictional Pocket Monsters -
Pokémon.
The concept behind the new
game is called augmented reality
(AR) and it is the process
of digitally overlaying a
game or anything else for that
matter over real items. The
game uses AR to allow the
camera on the users phone to
show the fictional characters
and the GPS locater on the
phone to show where they are
on the map. Then the player
(known as a Trainer) swipes
their finger across the screen
to throw Poké balls to catch
the monsters. Keep in mind
that is a very boiled down explanation.
AIN
Hot spots in Baxter Springs
include Ft. Blair, the Museum,
several area churches
and other historical markers.
The game has some of these
places marked as Poké Stops
and Poké Gyms. Stops are
locations where the player
receives items needed to play
the game and Gyms are places
they go to battle one another
with their monsters.
For those of you with kids
that want to play the game (or
if you want to – I know you
do) the game itself is free to
download on your phone. The
catch is that you have limited
supplies and to advance faster
(like many mobile games)
Pictured above: A Pokémon Trainer shows what they look like on their phones while trying
to catch one at the Ft. Blair site.
they have in-app purchases.
So if you’re letting the kids
play keep this in mind before
your account is dinged for a
game.
FORTUNE magazine reports
that the game has added
$7.5 billion to the market value
of parent company Nintendo
in 2 days.
Just a few facts and figures,
the game has been installed
on more phones than any other
downloaded app. In the
few weeks that it has been
available it has surpassed daily
usage of popular apps like
Facebook, snapchat and twitter.
On the upside, this game is
being touted as doing more
to combat childhood obesity
in two weeks than most
other programs have done in
the last 20 to 30 years. As I
interviewed players at the
Ft. Blair site, they all said
that they were normally out
and walking and bike riding.
Elise Veasy was one of several
players at the site, she said,
“Normally we would not have
walked this far, we usually
Pictured above: Elijah Elliott of "Team Mystic"
catching Pokémon, while riding around
on his bike. Elliot said "I normally ride
my bike all over town and this just makes it
more fun."
turn around at the War Memorial.”
She was at Ft. Blair
with a few of her friends, all
of whom were playing the
game.
There is a downside to all
the popularity is that people
are ignoring basic rules of
civil conduct. Examples include
trespassing on to private
property, walking into traffic
and occasionally car wrecks
and walking off of cliffs.
After hearing about these incidents
Officer Ray Vazquez
with the Baxter Springs P.D.
asked for players to be conscious
of where they are and
to not be trespassing on pri-
vate property. Another thing
to keep in mind for young
players in Quapaw is the cities
curfew laws, 10 pm and under
age shouldn’t be out without
an adult. Folks in Riverton,
stay out of the roundabout
and watch the banks at the
River. Vazquez said that players
need to be aware of their
surroundings at all times. Officer
Sheldon Bales said that
the department has not really
had any problems with players
on public property.
Those of you that want your
business or personal property
off of the list of places in
the game take heart, there
is a way. Visit https://support.pokemongo.nianticlabs.
com and click on "Reporting
PokéStop or Gym Issues"
this will bring up a page
where you can request to be
removed.
All you local "Trainers"
please be careful, it is entertaining
to watch you run
about, but no body wants to
see you get hurt over a video
game. You might also
consider the history of the
places you're playing at and
be mindful of tourist, please
pick up your litter while playing.
Update on McWethy Memorial
By Dustin Andrews
Baxter Springs - The City of
Baxter Springs’ Street Committee
met to discuss the
proposal to make Military Avenue
into a Memorial Edgar Lee
McWethy last Thursday.
Street Committee members are
Sherry Brown, Carl Ikenberry
and Jimmy Younger. Younger
was not present at the meeting.
Jim Hall, Baxter Springs Historical
Society President presented
the feelings of the Society.
Hall said that after polling
the group all were opposed, but
they would support doing something
else. He added that Military
maybe the only street without
a name change since 1858.
Hall stated that McWethy was
not the only Congressional Medal
of Honor recipient in Baxter
Springs and noted that James
Pond received one for his actions
on October 6, 1863 during
the Battle of Baxter Springs in
the Civil War.
Also present was Wayne Cook,
to present his views on the matter.
Cook reinforced the thoughts
of the Society that Military Ave-
nue holds historic relevance as it
is and that a memorial for both
men would be great, just not
Military Avenue.
Cook said that both men were
honored in the Veteran’s Memorial
with their names in the
bricks and as a focal point for
their service. Cook also suggested
looking at possibly naming
the bridge across Spring River
or something to that nature rather
than Military. He said that it
has a lot of traffic and the signs
noting the name would be more
visible than putting them at the
city limits.
Hall added that something like
renaming the bridge may be out
of the scope of control for the
City and would more than likely
have to be sent to KDOT and the
State for permission.
At the conclusion of the meeting
a decision was made to turn
it back over to the VFW and Jim
Bolinger to consider the changes
and to figure out the rules and logistics
needed to proceed before
coming back to the Council. The
City Council will meet again on
Tuesday the 26th at 6:00 pm.
Safety Presentation on "Wheels"
By Dustin Andrews
Baxter Springs - The Johnson
Public Library has been
participating in a summer program
called “On Your Mark,
Get Set... READ!”. As part of
this program they have had
featured guests all summer.
This week the presentation
was over “Wheels” and the
safety that goes along with
them.
Gene Nelson, the Elementary
Counselor at Lincoln and
Officer Rick Comer gave the
presentation to the crowd of
kids that were present.
Officer Comer presented
each child with an activity
book that covered the different
activities that should
be gone over to ensure your
child’s safety when riding on
a bike, skateboard or most
anything else with wheels
that a child can operate. He
explained that since the kids
had came to the presentation
that he would have a coloring
contest on a page in the book
and there would be awards
for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place on
those who colored it and returned
the page to him.
Nelson demonstrated how
to properly wear a helmet,
which should be worn anytime
that your child is on
wheels of any sort; by putting
two fingers together over his
eye brows to show approximately
where a helmet should
be seated. Nelson added that
if your helmet is wobbly you
USD 508 Counselor Gene Nelson and Officer Rick Comer demonstrate the proper use of
hand signals.
Nelson and Comer explaining how to properly wear a helmet and that when a helmet cracks
it is time to buy a new one. Nelson said better the helmet than you head.
should ask for a grownups
help to have it adjusted to not
wiggle around.
Comer informed the kids
that he tries to stop kids when
he sees them wearing helmets,
not because they are in
trouble, but to reward them
for wearing their helmet. He
said that he passes out tickets
for free ice cream. He added
that this year he is way
down on the number of tickets
he has passed out as kids
are not wearing helmets as
they should. Comer said that
98.9% of head injuries in cyclist
come from not wearing
a helmet.
The duo continued by questioning
the kids on what they
liked to ride and play on that
had wheels and demonstrated
all the moving parts on the
bicycle that Nelson brought
with him.
They stressed that besides a
helmet, anyone on a form of
wheels should wear bright
clothing, elbow and knee
pads, tie up loose items like
backpacks and shoelaces and
NEVER wear headphones or
flip flops when riding.
Other safety items they covered
included maintenance
like making sure bike tires
are inflated and skateboard
wheels are screwed on tight.
Comer also reminded the
kids that in the state of Kansas,
parents are liable for all
the rules that kids break when
riding their "wheel". He added
that at the age of the kids
present that they would be
best to ride on the sidewalks
and only go in the streets
when with an adult.
This Thursday at 10 am,
New Roof Collapses in Storm (cont'd from pg 1)
Aerial view from Chris Collinsworth at S.E.K. Quadcopter, showing the removal of the
ruined trusses after last weeks wind storm.
some gusty high winds and it
blew down the majority of the
trusses and broke out most of
the new windows.
Fortunately the storm that
blew through came at the
most opportune time, lunch.
All the workers were on break
and no one was in the sanctuary
when the trusses came
down. As a result there were
no injuries to report.
Construction workers on the
scene were busy with chainsaws
cutting the collapsed
trusses up so they could be
removed with the crane. New
trusses arrived late last week
work continues on the building.
At the time of publication I
could not get a dollar amount
for the damage or an expected
delay in progress.
The drone photo from Chris
Collinsworth at SEK Quadcopter
shows the damage
from above. The photo was
taken a day after the storm
and much of the debris had
been removed.
Workers did state that when
something like this happens
the trusses are not salvageable
and completely new trusses
will be used to complete the
job.
The original time line for
completion of the rebuild was
slated for sometime between
Thanksgiving and Christmas
of this year.
Quapaw FFA Receives 3D Printer
By Dustin Andrews
Quapaw - The Quapaw FFA
was awarded a grant for a 3D
Printer. The one they received
is an Ultimaker 2+.
The machines specs show
that it is a very compact printer
and can print pieces up to
8.8"x8.8"x8.1". It is also noted
that the machine uses standard
filament spools and not
a proprietary one like many
others. The filament is a plastic
string that resembles weed
eater string that used to print.
It is headed and ran through
the machine to create the finished
product.
You may ask yourself why
do the kids need this? I'm not
trying to toot horns, but this
is looking to be the future of
manufacturing. Several large
and small firms have began
using in-house 3D printers
for prototyping and for creating
replacement parts.
This will make for an interesting
year to see what Mr.
Couch and the FFA students
can create.
Baxter Springs - If you have
been around Baxter Springs
for very long you've probably
heard of Wayne Metcalf. If
you are involved with baseball
at all in the region you
know the one and only. Last
Monday night at the start of
the Little League All-Stars
Tournament Wayne was bestowed
with the honor of having
the Little League Field
named after him.
Metcalf started in with the
Little League in 1966 when
his son started. In '69 he be-
came President and stayed
there for 39 years. Wayne
served on the Little League
National Board of Directors
for three years from 1979-81.
Wayne said that he's been
involved for a long time and
he is deeply honored by having
the field named after him.
However, he said that his
wife Mary deserves as much
credit as he does. Wayne said
that Mary spent 37 years in
the snack shack at the field
and that there aren't too many
that would do that.
State Champs Hold Pancake Feed
Baxter Springs - Unless
you've been under a rock in a
deep hole, then you are aware
of the recent run of State
Championships in the area
over the last few weeks (and
still running).
But did you know the teams
pay for their own rings? For
this reason the Baxter Springs
Baseball Team held a pancake
feed at the Fellowship Baptist
Church last Saturday.
Head Coach Chris Mercer
said they had a great turnout
and that the team has had
well as the community for
coming out and helping out.
A thank you also goes out to
all the local businesses that
donated goods for the pancakes
At the time that I was there
they had served over 200
meals and ended up with a
to pay the cities bills with
$53,229.10 for payroll. Sherry
Brown asked about a payment
to Trail Boss for trailer
tires. Jim Morton, Public
Works Director; answered
that the tires were necessary
for the trailer to haul the Bob
Cat around. Jimmy Younger
asked about the expense being
partial sent to the Police
Department, Streets, Fire Department
and Water. Younger
said that the Fire doesn't use
the trailer. Howie explained
that the expense was split up
over all the department so
they can all use the trailer.
Mayor Trease, said the Fire
Department may never use
it, but it is available for their
Morton said that the Fire and
PD had used the trailer before
to move barricades. All
approved paying the bills.
Attorney Robert Myers read
notice for properties
The owner of 343 Park
was contacted by Jill Thomas
and she stated that the property
owner is trying to throw
out the renters, before they
become squatters. It was approved
by all.
