Thrift Shop Expands With New Building Church Roof Back On Schedule
By Dustin Andrews
Baxter Springs - The Ministerial
Alliance Thrift Shop
located at 140 W 10th St in
Baxter Springs has officially
expanded with the addition of
a 30 ft. x 30 ft. storage building.
Thrift Shop Director, Berniece
Moss, said the expansion
had been needed for a
long time as they have been
working in cramped conditions
and just did not have
room to continue to take
items in and do seasonal
changeovers.
The new building is unattached
from the current building
and the food pantry. It
will be used to house seasonal
change over items as well
as furniture items that they
are taking in. Moss said they
plan to add a room for furniture
drop offs, as the current
drop off is far too small to accept
furniture.
Moss added that all the work
Moss said that she would like
to list. She added that if anyone
birds, and a certified natural protective
habitat for the protected
skink population. "We have
left as much of the natural trees
and woods as possible and have
planted hundreds more trees."
states Sean Harrison, PR Manager.
"We follow "green" practices
in a variety of ways."
Now we have gone "green"
in a whole new way. We have
a greenhouse operation on four
acres on the Kansas side, right
here at Downstream. We have
four 30X90 greenhouses, and
the operation has created four
new full-time jobs.
We grow a wide variety of herbs
to get advance tickets with
adults at $6 and 55&Over &
Kids 6-12 at $5. If you wait
and get them at the gate adults
and vegetables that are used by
our excellent chefs in our restaurants.
We now provide the fresh
flowers that are featured all
around our property including
in the Nee Spa, the restaurants
and the Hotel Lobbies. We even
grow medicinal herbs for the
Spa's aromatherapy. "Organic"
is an often misused term, even
though it's popular in food marketing
— we avoid the term. Our
greenhouses and the products
we are growing are all natural.
We grow from seeds; we irrigate
with our own well water; we use
ladybugs as a natural pesticide.
This also another facet of how
Downstream has developed
into a virtually all-encompassing
self-sufficient community:
We have the obvious rooms and
restaurants, a security force, a
transportation system, a store,
an RV park, concerts and regular
local live music, a spa, business/
conference services, a certified
school, a fire department with
EMT, a health clinic with a nurse
practitioner, we have a growing
buffalo herd — and now we even
have a farming operation! All
of this touching parts of three
states.
will be $8 each.
No to Renaming Military Ave.
By Bart Riddle
Baxter Springs - It was proposed
by the VFW that the
city change Military Ave. to
???????? to honor the Medal
of Honor war recipient. The
VFW was informed by the
City Councilman Carl Ikenberry
that the Streets Committee
decided that at this
time they were not going to
change the street name but if
they wanted to honor the recipient
then they could do so
with a sign coming into the
town on North and South entrances
of Military into town.
They would have to contact
Kansas Department of Transportation
and get permission
to do so.
The city put a backhoe up
for sale to the highest bidder
through a closed bid process.
Robert Whisner bid in for
$4,780, Lester Foster bid in
for $4,101, Fred Bolin put a
bid $4,777, Richard Williamson
bid $8,050, J.C. Eaton bid
$6,560, and Joe Morton put a
bid in $10,000. The city put
into motion to accept the bid
Thomas Niegisch with CityLink TV requests
permission to start live streaming council
meetings effective August 9th.
from Joe Morton with was
passed by the five city council
members present.
Part of the city's cable system
is down due to an upgrade
by the one of the services the
city subscribes to. The company
upgraded from an analog
to digital before the city
changed over its equipment
making it go offline. Current
channels affected include the
400's of the HD section.
A new receiver and transcoder
will cost upwards of
$10,000 to get it back up and
going to be compatible with
the new cable system coming
in. The cable committee are
currently getting bids on th
new equipment to get the cable
system up and going.
The sale to CableOne may
be tied up again, since all the
equipment has to be functioning
to make the sale.
Thomas Niegisch is taking
over the Baxter Springs City
channel of CityLinkTV. He
asked the city council for their
blessing to broadcast future
meetings. He would like to
start with the first city council
meeting in August. Since the
meeting is an open meeting
he wouldn’t need permission
to broadcast the meeting on
the channel. City Link is an
online broadcasting system
that broadcasts live videos of
local sporting events as well
as any open public events
for those who would want to
watch them and can't make
it or want to watch it at their
own convenience.
The next city council meeting
will be on August 9th at
7:00 pm sharp.
Juggler Comes to the Library
By Dustin Andrews
Baxter Springs - The Johnson
Public Library has been
participating in a summer program
called “On Your Mark,
Get Set... READ!”. As part of
this program they have had
featured guests all summer.
This week was the final performance
with Professional
Juggler Brian Wendling.
Wendling began juggling in
1975 when he saw some jugglers
while going to school at
the University of Minnesota.
As a young impressionable
college student he taught himself
using whiffle balls and
has continued to teach himself
new tricks to this day.
He started the show off by
bouncing balls off of a drum
and having the children present
clap along. As mediocre
as that may sound Wendling
brought the heat very quickly
by juggling several balls at
once while talking to the audience.
The whole time the perfomance
was going on Wendling
found ways to impart
knowledge on the kids. For
example when he dropped a
ball while spinning it, he noted,
"If you make a mistake as
long as everything is alright,
just keep going - just like
reading, when you come to
a word you don't know, learn
it and keep reading". His little
bits of knowledge woven
within his act and slightly self
deprecating humor geared
to the adult crowd made for
an entertaining show for the
adults and the children.
He had several popular acts
for the show including the
usual ball spinning, but it had
several added acts including
roping (where Wendling and
five volunteers stood inside
a spinning rope), eating and
juggling ping pong balls using
his mouth, juggling pins
and his finally of spinning
plates.
The whole time the show was
going on the kids were bouncing
on the floor and having a
blast (most of the adults in the
room were as well, but I won't
put names in, its not the Police
Report). Wendling's website
is brianwendling.com. He
is a professional juggler based
out of Kansas City and has received
many awards for his
Professional Juggler and Comedian Brian Wendling working the balancing bowls during his
performance at the Library.
presentation including the International
Juggling Association's
Team Champion, and
Best State Performer at the
KC Renaissance Festival no
less than 5 times.
All in all, if you get a chance
to see him perform, grab the
kids, grandma and the neighbors
it'll be a good show.
The Library is planning several
upcoming events. They
will start the Pre-School reading
program on September
13th at 10 am. Harvest Fest
is planned Sept. 4th where
crafters, artists, churches and
schools set up around the library
with homemade goods
and music.

Empire Releases 2nd Qtr Earnings Report
JOPLIN, MO, July 28, 2016 –
(NYSE:EDE) At the Board of Directors
meeting of The Empire District Electric
Company (the “Company”) held today,
the Directors declared a quarterly
dividend of $0.26 per share.
The dividend is payable September
15, 2016, to holders of record as of
September 1, 2016. The Company,
an operator of regulated electric, gas
and water utilities, announced today
the results for the quarter and twelve
months ended June 30, 2016.
According to Brad Beecher, Empire’s
President and CEO, “Our second
quarter results, adjusted for weather and
the mergerrelated
costs incurred during the period,
continue to meet our expectations.
Taking these results into account and
considering the
preliminary rate case outcome, our
earnings guidance communicated on
February 26, 2016 remains unchanged.”
Beecher added, “With FERC and
Oklahoma approvals in place and a
settlement agreement awaiting approval
in Arkansas, we are making steady
progress as we work through the
remaining state and Federal regulatory
processes necessary to close our merger
with Algonquin Power and Utilities
Corp. We continue to expect closing in
the first quarter of 2017.”
Electric segment gross margin (electric
revenue less cost of fuel and purchased
power) increased $7.2 million, or
8.2%, during the second quarter 2016
compared to the second quarter 2015.
Fuel expense changes reflective of
the timing of the deferral and recovery
of non-Missouri fuel and consumable
costs had negligible impact on electric
segment gross margin when compared
to the 2015 quarter. Gas segment margin
(gas revenues less cost of gas sold and
