By Dustin Andrews
Columbus - Friday, December
30th marked the end of an
era, one of the most beloved
Postmasters in Cherokee
County retired.
Judy Adams has served the
USPS for 39 years and marked
the final months of her career
as the Postmaster of the Post
By Dustin Andrews
Riverton - Last Saturday five
volunteers came out to help
with putting the roof on the
new dugouts at the Riverton
Softball Field.
Scott Donaldson said, “The
rebuild is being paid for by
fundraisers and donations.”
The plan is for the field to be
Office in Columbus.
Adams was recognized back
in September by the Postal
Service for working at or
managing every Post Office in
Cherokee County.
She will forever be marked in
the annals of Baxter Springs as
the first female letter carrier.
While I asked for a picture,
ready in time for season.
Donaldson added that the
dugouts are just part of the rebuild.
He said they intend to
fix the washout problem where
the field runs off into the south
dugout, the stands and into the
concession stand.
The new stands have been
under construction since last
Judy asked everyone working
that morning to join in as she
said “It takes more than one
person to make a Post Office
work, and these are the people
that get it done.”
Judy said that she is looking
forward to her retirement so
she can spend time with her
recently retired best friend
fall. The metal for the roof has
been ordered and is expected
to be installed in the coming
weeks (weather permitting).
The new dugouts are
equipped with leach lines that
will help with the drainage issues.
The lines are setup under
the dugouts and run out the
back, they will be under a few
Royce Donaldson and her recently
retired husband Jerry
Adams, who also spent 39
years in the postal system.
Adams stated, “Working for
the Postal Service has been
a total blessing, and I will be
waiting for what God has for
me in my next career.”
Judy said that she will help-
inches of dirt once the field is
finished up.
The new dugouts will have
enough extra room to hold all
of the supplies that are in the
old shed. Donaldson said this
will help secure their supplies
and eliminate the breakins
they have suffered in the past.
A thank you is well deserved
ing out in several community
service based positions and
she will be involved with her
friends and family much more
in the coming year.
Tyler Speer will serving at
the Columbus Post Office as
tempory Post Master until further
notice.
for all of the donations, the
young ladies that held all the
fundraisers, all the volunteers
that have came out and continue
to do so and last but not
least the people organizing all
of the events and workers to
make the community a better
place. THANK YOU.
By Mary Billington, Director Baxter
Springs Heritage Center & Museum
The earliest inhabitants
known to reside in the Baxter
Springs region were Native
Americans. This was the land
of the mighty Osage Nation.
The migratory Osage people
roamed the area that in 1803
was known as Louisiana.
From central Kansas as far
east as the Mississippi River,
and south into present-day
Oklahoma and Arkansas, the
Osage claimed these lands as
their traditional homelands.
The Osages made frequent
journeys each spring and
autumn to their hunting
grounds, many of which were
located in and around Baxter
Springs. At this place the
Osages found game plentiful
and the springs a natural
campsite.
Chief Black Dog was the
leader of the western band
of Osages. The chief was
an imposing figure, a man
of great physical stature,
standing nearly seven feet
tall. Quite naturally, Chief
Black Dog presented a most
powerful image, endowed
with extraordinary judgment
and leadership ability. Highly
esteemed by his people, Black
Dog was a formidable leader.
To travel from homes in the
west to hunting grounds as
far away as Baxter Springs,
Chief Black Dog conceived a
plan to construct a permanent
trail to connect these two
sites. The Osage needed this
Baxter Springs Fire Department
We have been working hard
to get all of the year end
reports to KFIRS (Kansas
Fire Information Reporting
System) and they will pass it
on to NFIRS. The reporting
helps us and the state allocate
money and secure grants to
get needed equipment, and
manpower. They also help
to pin point certain problems
with appliances or vehicles
that may be causing fire, it
helps let manufacturers know
there is a problem and they
can recall items and/or fix the
problem so they don’t continue
to make faulty products. Even
though it is state mandated it
does a lot of good.
With that being said we
thought we would pass along
our yearly statistics.
trail for mourning parties
and to provide a route for
replenishing their pony
supplies.
The bottom land along
Spring Branch was one of
the Osage’s primary camping
sites. From this location Black
Dog’s trail began. Black Dog
ordered all the warriors in
his band to work on the trail.
It is believed the work began
in 1803. From this campsite,
the work progressed west.
The warriors worked by day
and returned to their families
at night. The work continued
for several weeks. The trail
basically followed the same
route as present-day highway
166. The trail was completed
in the vicinity of Arkansas
City, Kansas.
The trail was a monumental
achievement for the time. The
untrained workers blazed a
trail, it is said, that was wide
enough for thirty horses to
travel abreast.
The Osages maintained this
trail for many years, until
their homelands were reduced
and they were forced to
accept reservation life. Their
migratory hunting trips ended
when their lands were reduced
to a small portion of land west
of Baxter Springs.
This important trail is
permanently recognized by
a commemorative marker
placed beside Spring Branch
below the Baxter Springs
Fish Advisory Issued
Staff Reports
TOPEKA – The Kansas
Department of Health and
Environment (KDHE) and
the Kansas Department of
Wildlife, Parks and Tourism
(KDWPT) are issuing revised
fish consumption advisories
for 2016. The advisories
identify types of fish or
other aquatic animals that
should be eaten in limited
quantities or, in some cases,
avoided altogether because
of contamination. General
advice is also provided to
aid the public in making
informed decisions regarding
the benefits as well as the risks
associated with eating locally
caught fish from Kansas
waters.
Statewide Advisories: The
following consumption
restrictions are recommended
because of mercury in fish:
Women who are pregnant,
may become pregnant, or are
nursing and children age 17
or younger should restrict
consumption of all types
of locally caught fish, from
waters or species of fish not
specifically covered by an
advisory, to one meal per
week because of mercury.
Women who are pregnant,
may become pregnant, or are
nursing and children age 17
or younger should restrict
consumption of largemouth,
smallmouth, and spotted bass
(black basses) to one meal per
month because of mercury.
The general public (men and
women 18 or older)should
restrict consumption of these
species to one meal per week
because of mercury.
confluence of Center Creek to
the Kansas/Oklahoma border
(Cherokee County); shellfish
Missouri/Kansas border to
Empire Lake (Cherokee
County); shellfish because of
lead and cadmium.
4. Cow Creek in Hutchinson
