Malibu Planning Commission
Telecom company asks
for another extension
Controversial talks
on proposed facility,
antenna to continue
on Monday, Aug. 16
Cassandra Stephenson
Freelance Reporter
The City of Malibu’s
Planning Commission on
July 18 unanimously voted
to continue discussion regarding
the potential installation
of a new wireless
telecommunications facility
and antenna on Harvester
Road.
The topic will be picked
up again Aug. 15 at the
request of the applicant,
Crown Castle, according
to Assistant City Attorney
Trevor Rusin.
Per a previous standing
agreement between both
parties, if Crown Castle’s
new permit is approved
before Aug. 8, the company
will drop the lawsuit
against the City, according
to City documents. According
to Rusin, however,
Crown Castle is willing to
continue the court date in
light of their request for
continuance for project revision;
though, no stipulation
has been signed.
This is the second time
the discussion of the issue
was tabled for a later Planning
Commission meeting.
On June 20, the commission
voted 4-1 to continue
the discussion after being
asked for the extension by
Crown Castle.
At the time, Malibu resident
Dana Christiaansen,
who has been at the forefront
of the fight against
installing the facility and
antenna for the past three
years, told the Malibu Surfside
News that he knew
why the item was delayed,
but declined to elaborate
further.
Crown Castle sued the
City of Malibu and the Malibu
City Council in August
2015 after the City Council
voted to uphold an appeal
by Malibu residents in July
2015. The lawsuit seeks
“declaratory and injunctive
relief” for four alleged
causes of action, according
to Planning Commission
documents, but is currently
suspended because of a
conditional settlement.
The project has a history
of approvals and appeals
since it was first approved
by the Malibu Planning
Commission in November
2013.
Two Malibu residents
filed an appeal 10 days
after an approval, citing
potential decline in property
value, violation of the
Malibu Municipal Code,
and Crown Castle’s lack of
status as a wireless carrier,
among other complaints.
The Planning Commission
split the vote on that
appeal, so the initial approval
was upheld.
The residents filed a second
appeal following the
approval, contending that
Crown Castle “did not provide
adequate pole loading
capacity calculations and
the project would violate
the MMC by exceeding
the applicable noise threshold,”
according to Planning
Department documents.
The issue was examined
by the Malibu City Council
in April 2015, and the
council ultimately granted
Crown Castle more time to
research after it heard conflicting
information from
both Malibu residents and
Crown Castle representatives.
After hearing a second
report from Crown Castle,
the City Council voted to
uphold the appeal in July
2015, revoking approval of
Crown Castle’s proposal.
Also on Monday, the
Planning Commission received
and filed the permits
for the 35th Annual Kiwanis
Club Chili Cook-Off and
Carnival, proposed to occur
Sept. 2-5.
The event has two proposed
adjustments: it will
open two hours later on
Friday, and 30 minutes
earlier on the other days.
Additionally, live bands
with amplified music are
proposed on Sept. 2 from
4-9 p.m. A representative
for Kiwanis also requested
a 45-minute extension for
live music on Saturday and
Sunday nights.
The next Malibu Planning
Commission meeting
will be held on Aug. 1 at
Malibu City Hall at 6:30
p.m. City Hall is located at
23825 Stuart Ranch Road
in Malibu.
Other meeting news
•An extension was granted
for four single-family
residences.
•The commission also
OK’d extensions for two
other demolition/construction
projects.
Pop-ups help hype upcoming arts festival
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
Anticipation is building
for the 45th annual Malibu
Arts Festival, which will
open to the Malibu community
July 30.
Over the past few
months, the Malibu Chamber
of Commerce and those
involved with the festival
have been giving the community
small tastes of what
they should expect with art
pop-ups called “Made in
Malibu.” The first appeared
in early May at the Malibu
Lumber Yard.
But the brief installations
ventured outside of Malibu
Wednesday, July 13, with
a one-day show appearing
at Westlake Brewing Company.
The brewing company,
along with Westlake
Village-based Aldabella
Winery & Tasting Room,
is to provide some of the
beverages for the arts festival,
said Kristine Bocchino,
chairwoman-elect of the
Malibu Chamber of Commerce.
Because some of the artists
showing at the festival
later this month hail from
areas such as Westlake
Village, Agoura Hills and
Thousand Oaks, Bocchino
said it made sense to hold
a pop-up outside of Malibu.
“We wanted to give a
little love to those over the
hill,” Bocchino said.
One of the artists at last
week’s pop-up was Malibu
native Lily Lambert, who
showed pieces from two
of her series, “Energy” and
“Pike.” Both series depict
a variety of colors, but the
“Pike” paintings have an
especially unique meaning.
Malibu native Lisa Lambert stands below her paintings,
which appeared at the second “Made in Malibu’ art
pop-up on Wednesday, July 13, at Westlake Brewing
Company in Westlake Village.
Photos by Alex Vejar/22nd Century Media
“The ‘Pike’ series [is]
if fish could dream, what
would those dreams look
like,” said Lambert, who
will show her art at the
Malibu Arts Festival for the
first time.
Displaying a different
type of art was Malibu
resident Lenise Soren, who
just moved to Point Dume.
Soren works with healing
crystals, making jewelry
out of them, as well as providing
healing sessions
with crystals in her new
Point Dume showroom.
At the festival, Soren will
produce a “wellness village,”
she said, with artists
that utilize acupuncture,
aroma therapy, yoga, physical
training and more. Soren
also said four performances,
all involving crystals, will
take place in the village.
Pictured are various crystals that Malibu resident Lenise Soren will show to arts
festival attendees. It will be her first time showing at the festival.
Scott Lindner stands under his paintings of horses at the pop-up. While not a resident
of Malibu, he will show his work for the second time at the arts festival.
It will also be Soren’s
first time at the Malibu Arts
Festival.
“I’m very supportive of
what they’re doing and the
festival,” Soren said of the
Malibu Chamber of Commerce.
Bocchino said at this
year’s arts festival, Malibu
resident Tim Lawrence —
known to many as Fireball
Tim — will have a “Cars as
Art” display at the front of
the festival that will feature
45 classic vehicles. Lawrence
is to conducting interviews
for his YouTube channel
as well, Bocchino said.
Before July 30, a third
and final “Made in Malibu”
pop-up will once again appear
in the Malibu area, this
time for two weeks. Festival
organizers said the third
installation will be open
soon.

Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee
Consultants find issues with previous financial viability studies
Long-term forecast
shows big loss of
per-student money
for Santa Monica
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
The Malibu Unification
Negotiations Committee
received from its
educational consultants
sobering information on
the financial aftermath of
separating the Santa Monica-Malibu
Unified School
District.
Two representatives from
education consulting firm
School Services of California
joined the committee
of six on Thursday, July
15, to discuss their findings
based on two financial projections
made last year by
SMMUSD Chief Financial
Officer Jan Maez and
WestEd, the firm hired by
the Advocates for Malibu
Public Schools to study
whether separating the district
would create two independent
and financially
CITY OF MALIBU
Certified O.W.T.S.
and N.A.W.T.
Septic inspectors
for all single family,
multi-family and
commercial properties
viable school districts.
Robert Miyashiro, of
SSC, looked at WestEd’s
report from last July,
which concluded that each
of the California Education
Code’s nine criteria for
school district reorganization
would be substantially
met if SMMUSD splits.
According to Miyashiro’s
findings, however, there
will be issues with two of
the nine criteria.
The WestEd report states
Criterion 5, which stipulates
that the State incur
no increased costs as a
result of a school district
reorganization, would be
met. That report found
that a Santa Monica-only
school district would need
roughly $4.3 million in additional
state funding after
SMMUSD splits.
Miyashiro said that
while the dollar amount is
low compared to the $40
billion of statewide aid,
that does not necessarily
mean the amount is insignificant.
“I still think Criterion 5
McDermott
is going to be a challenge
on the reorganization,”
Miyashiro said.
Another big challenge to
the possible reorganization
that Miyashiro conveyed
to the committee was Criterion
9, which deals with
the fiscal status of new or
existing school districts after
a reorganization occurs.
The district as a whole is
currently spending more
than it’s making, according
to the most recent budget
numbers, which would remain
an issue even after a
separation, Miyashiro said.
“Our comment with regard
to Criterion 9 is that
to the extent that this imbalance
is in place when
• Residential • Commercial
310.456-1173
McDermott Pumping has provided excellent service to Malibu for over 23 years
310.456-2286
“There’s so many variables that
can change the outcome in future
years that you need to look at it a
different way.”
Mike Ricketts — School Services of California
the reorganization is executed,
then the two districts
inherit this problem,”
Miyashiro said.
SMMUSD plans to
make $4.5 million in budget
cuts starting in 2017-
18, but Miyashiro said that
might not be enough.
“Even with that in place,
it takes care of a lot of their
problem, but the shortfall
is still there,” Miyashiro
said.
SSC’s draft report to the
committee states that SM-
MUSD’s financial forecast
“shows substantial operating
deficits through 2018-
19 of over six percent of
total expenditures.”
“If this imbalance is not
corrected, the foundation
for creating two new unified
school districts jeopardizes
the fiscal outlook
for both proposed district,”
the SCC report reads.
Mike Ricketts, of SCC,
studied the per-student
revenue that each new district
would take in after the
separation over a 12-year
period. In the first four
years, a Santa Monicaonly
school district would
just about break even in
per-student revenue compared
to current SMMUSD
projections over the same
time period.
Beyond the initial four
years, however, Santa
Projected difference in per-student revenue for
Potential SMUSD vs. MUSD if smmusd separates
Year SMUSD MUSD
2021-22 -$216 $3,094
2022-23 -$374 $3,240
2023-24 -$594 $3,390
2024-25 -$781 $3,546
2025-26 -$1,032 $3,708
2026-27 -$1,223 $3,874
2027-28 -$1,262 $4,046
2028-29 -$1,303 $4,225
*Source: School Services of California
Monica per-student revenue
would begin and continue
to fall through 2028-
29, when the SSC financial
projects stopped.
A Malibu-only district,
meanwhile, would see
increases in per-student
revenue throughout the 12
years, according to SSC’s
projections.
Ricketts said the key
aspect of the financial
impacts of reorganization
for the committee to
think about will be how it
creates an equitable division
between the two new
school district.
“There’s so many variables
that can change the
outcome in future years
that you need to look at it
a different way,” Ricketts
said.
SSC also concluded that
a Santa Monica-only district
will eventually become
a minimum-state-aid
district after a separation
occurs, and then it will
shift to a basic aid in later
years.
The dire financial projections
over 12 years
seemed to create some uncertainty
among the committee.
Santa Monica team
member and attorney Tom
Larmore said it would be a
good idea to study financial
data in two scenarios:
if SMMUSD stayed together
and if SMMUSD
separates. Other members
of the committee agreed
with Larmore.
“Especially in light of
these results would suggest
that the real difference between
where we would’ve
been as an existing district
and a Santa Monica-only
district gets bigger in the
out years,” said Paul Silvern,
Santa Monica team
member.
Debbie Mulvaney, the
third Santa Monica team
member, said she thinks
the separation agreement
should stipulate that if
there are any changes in
the state funding formula
or any other significant
financial shifts, it would
trigger a re-opener that allows
both new districts to
assess their current standing.
“There are things you
can write in any agreement
that allow you to
come back to the table for
a certain level of shifts and
any number of things,”
Mulvaney said. “That will
protect both sides in case
there’s a major shift in any
direction.”

Dog rescued from
hot car at Zuma
Staff Report
A small dog was rescued
July 9 from inside a hot car
parked at Zuma Beach by a
Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff’s
deputy, according to the
police station’s Facebook
page.
The station received a
call from a concerned visitor
who saw the dog inside
of the car, which had a window
slightly cracked open.
Sheriff’s deputy Joanna
Krase responded to the
area and located the vehicle
with the dog inside.
Krase was able to unlock
the vehicle and remove the
dog, which was reportedly
very thirsty and drank water
right from Krase’s hand,
according to the Facebook
post.
Deputies were able to locate
the dog’s owners, who
were out-of-town visitors
to Malibu, according to the
post. The visitors did not
realize when they arrived
to the beach that they could
not bring a dog onto the
beach, so they decided to
leave the dog in the vehicle.
However, the did was not
left alone for long.
Police reports
Several cars burglarized on July 8
July 8 saw a host of
activity in the form of reported
car burglaries.
A car burglary was reported
in the 35000 block
of Pacific Coast Highway
at Leo Carrillo State
Beach, where a suspect or
suspect reportedly shattered
the front passenger
side window of a man’s
car and took an iPhone,
leather wallet, sunglasses,
backpack, $85 and a few
credit cards.
At Duke’s Malibu in the
21000 block of PCH the
same day, sunglasses and
a CD case were allegedly
stolen from a woman’s vehicle.
The woman parked
her car with the valet at
8 p.m. When her car was
returned to her at 10 p.m.,
she saw that the rear passenger
window had been
shattered, her glove compartment
opened and the
items missing, police said.
On the corner of PCH
and Paradise Cove Road,
the title to a car and a car
registration were allegedly
stolen from inside a vehicle.
The right rear passenger
window was also
allegedly shattered.
Again, on the same day,
in the 5000 block of Busch
Drive, a man parked his
car at Zuma Ridge Trailhead
at 7 p.m. When he
came back an hour later,
he found his car ransacked
and a window shattered.
The man said no property
was taken.
A woman’s bicycle
also was allegedly stolen
that day from outside her
apartment on PCH.
State Beach in the 3900
block of Cross Creek
Road, a vehicle was allegedly
burglarized of
a black bag containing
several items. A family
parked their rental car
in the parking lot of the
beach. After an hour-long
walk, they came back and
noticed someone had entered
the trunk of the vehicle
and stole the items.
Police said they found so
signs of forced entry.
July 13
• The manager of the
Sephora store in the 3800
block of Cross Creek
Road reported that he saw
a male and female suspect
put merchandise into a
brown bag. The manager
took bag from the male
suspect without a struggle
and saw 10 bottles
of men’s Dior fragrance
inside. Each bottle was
worth about $90.
July 12
• In the 23000 block of
Malibu Road at Coldwell
Banker, an unknown suspect
or suspects allegedly
tried to enter a locked office.
When the manager of
the location arrived, she
noticed broken glass and a
cut door handle, and that
the suspect or suspects
gained entry through the
front doors of the business.
Police said they saw
pry marks on the door by
the lock of the office, and
that the door handle appeared
to have been cut
off. But the lock stayed in
place, preventing access
to the office, police said.
July 11
• At the parking lot of
the UPS store in the 23000
block of Malibu Road, two
Samsung phones were allegedly
stolen from an unlocked
car. A man left his
phone plugged in, while a
second man left his phone
under a jacket in the left
rear passenger seat, according
to the report.
• In the 35000 block of
Pacific Coast Highway, a
purse, leather wallet, $125
and various debit cards
were allegedly stolen. A
man parked his car at Leo
Carillo State Beach. When
he returned to his vehicle,
he saw the front passenger
window shattered and the
items missing.
• At Vintage Grocers,
a male Hispanic and a
female Hispanic were reportedly
seen in the store’s
liquor section acting suspicious.
The two suspects
Market can offer fresh meal, community feel
Barbara Burke
Freelance Reporter
Stop by the Malibu Farmer’s
Market any Sunday and
residents can find a veritable
potpourri of fresh foods
that provide ingredients for
many dishes — from simple,
healthful dishes that a
busy parent needs to feed
a family traditional fare, to
cutting-edge, new products
that intrigue and offer opportunities
to create firstclass
unique dishes for even
the most fancy occasion.
“We come to the farmers
market because we get
amazing food from all over
the world, and we can support
our local vendors and
farmers,” visitor Matthew
Burgess said.
-Detox-
But the market is not just
about food. It is a gathering
place for the community as
well as for those driving by
on a trip to the beach.
“This is an amazing
weekly community where
people we know and love
gather,” Burgess said while
spending time with his
3-year-old son, Kevin, who
chimed in.
“The food is so yummy,”
Kevin said.
At the market, Malibu
residents can fill their bags
and fridges with fresh vegetables
straight from local
farms as well as with foods
from around the world. For
the basics, you will find
huge bunches of seemingly
endless varieties of lettuce,
kale, onions, peppers, heirloom
tomatoes and all types
of vegetables. Season those
elemental ingredients with
some of the myriad spices
and locally grown herbs.
Or try the avocado oil,
which is great for searing,
and enhances, but does not
intrude upon, the flavor of
any dish because it has the
highest smoke point of any
fruit oil — up to 450 degrees.
For main dishes, there
are numerous options. Try
the fresco pasta and season
it with all types of the market’s
fresh herbs as well as
its fromage options, which
include flavorful mozzarellas
and burrata, a fresh Italian
cheese made with mozzarella
and cream.
At the market, it’s all
about choice, uniqueness
and a plentiful blend of
necessary staples and novel
specialty foods and spices.
Vendors offer fresh, organic
meats and seafood
straight from the boat, as
well as from all over the
world. Fresh ready-to-boil
pasta of many unique varieties
as well as rice options
basic staple choices.
No epicurean feast of
shopping selections is complete
without one’s sweet
tooth being satisfied.
Enticing beautiful, bright
berries are plentiful at the
market. They’re perfect for
making a strawberry pie,
a tarte or a summer berry
cake. Apples, kiwis, cantaloupe
and citrus of all varieties
also tempt your palate.
For dessert, gourmet specialties
offer amazing dolce
options, including Italian
rum cakes that are so moist
they quite literally melt
in your mouth — try the
chocolate raspberry cordial
or the Italian Butter Rum
cake. Fresh yogurt desserts
served on-site hit the spot as
you make your way through
the market, or you can take
them to go.
Fill your kids’ backpacks
with dried fruit, a healthy alternative
to processed chips.
The market offers dried
kiwi, ginger, cantaloupe,
marionberry and myriad
other choices. Throw in
some dried nuts. Try the raw
Pepitas, or pumpkin seeds,
which offer just the right
combination of saltiness
and crunch.
Fill the adults’ lunch boxes
with hummus, pita or dolmades,
all freshly made and
locally sourced.
After food shopping,
Malibu residents can check
out the flower stands and
prepare their Sunday dinner
tables with the fresh cuts
from the market or brighten
their living spaces more permanently
by taking home
one an orchid.
Thirsty market-goers can
take a break from the food
shopping to try a Brewchata,
a traditional Mexican
horchata mixed with cold
brew coffee. Himalayan teas
provide a unique, healthy
thirst quencher as well. Or,
try the virgin mojitos for
a quick pick-me-up. The
Rooibos Tea with Moringa,
a Red Bush tea from South
Africa that quenches your
thirst and is nutrient-filled,
is a unique healthy option.
Finally, you can try some
hormone-free bullion drinks
that provide collagen to ensure
your body is strong for
the busy work week.
Residents can also pop
into the market for necessary
items, or you can stay
awhile and enjoy breakfast
or lunch. Vendors from all
over the world cook up delicious,
unique ready-to-eat
foods. Try the Akara (Nigerian
bean cakes), the Mediterranean
dishes, the Chilean
empanadas or the Sierra
Leone fried plantain at the
West African cuisine stand.
Vendors offering more typical
food, hot dogs and burgers.
Nomination period for
City Council begins
Submitted by the City of
Malibu
The nomination period
for the election of the
Malibu City Council began
Monday, July 18 and will
run until Aug. 12, according
to a City press release.
Those who want to be
elected to the council will
have to retrieve, fill out and
submit all the necessary
paperwork within that time
frame, said Heather Glaser,
acting City clerk.
A total of three council
seats are available in the
coming election. Two of
them, held by Joan House
and John Sibert, are termed
out, meaning those two positions
are guaranteed to
be filled by new members,
Glaser said. The third seat,
held currently by Mayor
Pro Tem Skylar Peak, is
open, but Peak told the
Malibu Surfside News that
he intends to run for reelection.
Council election will be
held on Nov. 8, the first to
coincide with the statewide
general election after the
City Council changed the
election date in an effort
to increase voter participation.
“Malibu residents care
deeply about the matters
that impact our community,
and participating in
the election is one of the
most important ways to
make their voice and vision
heard,” Mayor Lou La
Monte said. “Unfortunately,
we still have low voter
participation. By changing
the election date, we hope
to make it more convenient
for Malibu residents to participate
in the democratic
process.”
If any of the three incumbents
fail to file their
paperwork, the nomination
period can be extended to
In May 2015, the Council
voted to consolidate
Summer food preservation taught to participants in workshop
Suzy Demeter
Freelance Reporter
Food coach and vegetarian
chef Lesley Ward
brought fresh summer flavors
from the farmers market’s
fruit and vegetables
into a Summer in a Jar
workshop on Friday, July
15, at Malibu City Hall.
Participants were treated
to an aromatic culinary
experience where they
learned the best way to
quickly cook down and jar
fresh ingredients for shortterm
refrigerator storage or
for immediate enjoyment.
“This is a way to preserve
flavors of summer to
use now and a little later,”
Ward said.
Some recipes of the day
featured tomatoes for a
simple sauce, strawberry
jam and pickled red onions.
The tomatoes were
cooked down for 30-40
minutes, then strained
through a food mill. Sauce
ingredients included shallots,
garlic, basil, olive oil
and salt and pepper. The
skins and seeds of the tomatoes
were saved to make
bruschetta.
A strawberry jam was
Lesley Ward puts together ingredients for pickled red
onions in a jar.
also made by cooking the
fruit with lemon juice and
organic cane sugar. Once
cooled, all preparations
were poured into jars. The
sauce lasts one week in the
refrigerator, while the jam
lasts two weeks.
Participants made a
pickled-red-onion condiment
with distilled vinegar,
organic cane sugar,
salt and water. It refrigerates
for about one week
and makes an possible
topping for pizza or sandwiches.
Lemon peels and strawberry
tops were turned into
lemonade as Ward showed
the participants various
ways to maximize most of
the produce.
behind motion at library
Suzy Demeter
Freelance Reporter
Bionic Brandon (right) takes imaginary DNA from
volunteer Kona Schorr to see if “she is in a good mood.”
The Malibu Library
hosted a science program
called Marvels in Motion
on Thursday, July 14. “Bionic
Brandon” introduced
children to Isaac Newton’s
laws of physics through his
“Up, Up and Away” demonstrations.
Children assisted in a
series of experiments. One
of them was “The Flamingo
Didgeridoo,” which
employed a long tube that
created a humming sound
effect when the ethanol inside
it was lit and travelled
down the cylinder.
Another test involved
a long stick held by two
volunteers with a stuffed
animal on a bungee to demonstrate
centripetal motion.
Children also learned
about inertia and its relationship
with mass and momentum
when a volunteer
was asked to spin while
seated on a disc. They
also learned Newton’s law
of every action having an
equal and opposite reaction
when a rocket car used a
fire extinguisher to propel
it forward.
Bionic Brandon wowed
his volunteers and audience
when he created exothermic
reactions by mixing
manganese dioxide with
hydrogen peroxide. The
concoction caused smoke
and a fire flash effect.
The program was sponsored
by the Los Angeles
Country Library.

Much ado about mulch: Clearing up misconceptions
Andy Lopez
Contributing Columnist
Invisible Gardener
Today, I would like to
clear up some misconceptions
about
mulch.
First off, mulch is not a
soil amendment. Instead,
its primary job is to protect
the ground. And, there are
different types of mulch
depending on their uses.
Mulch that is meant to
not only protect the soilm
but also to decompose and
add humus, is made up of
finer materials that have a
certain amount of shredded
fine tree bark along
with some compost. My
favorite is called Azalea/
Gardenia mix, made from
earthworm castings and
fine tree cuttings with the
various biologicals added.
Here’s a
Christopher Bashaw at chris@malibusurfsidenews.com or (310) 457-2112.
While this is for acid-loving
plants like azaleas and
gardenias, it works great
here in Malibu because
the soil here is so alkaline,
and the acid mulch helps to
bring the pH levels down
to more acceptable quantities
to the plants. The ideal
pH is 6.5-6.8. Malibu soil
is 7.4 or higher.
Then there is decorative
mulch that is meant to be
there not just for sun protection,
but for looks. This
stuff does nothing to add
humus to the soil. So it is
not a good idea to simply
mulch away with this stuff,
thinking that it is good for
the earth. Just applying
wood chips or wood shavings
on top of the ground
does nothing to help the
soil hold water or to assist
the plants. It is, therefore,
important that you apply
rock dust and compost,
then mulch it over with the
chips if you want.
If you do not properly
take care of the soil, it will
harden on you and make
watering down deep, difficult,
if not impossible.
Also, many folks believe
mulching will bring termites
around. This is not
true. Termites do not live
in live wood, and if the
wood is dead and shredded,
that process alone will
kill them. But when wood
is piled up, it will heat up,
and that will finish off any
that are left. Also, termites
need a source of water and
a way to make tunnels to
connect them together.
Wood chips or any mulch
will not support termites or
any other type of insects.
Another thing about
mulch that many folks
believe to be true — but
are totally wrong about —
is the belief that mulch will
burn and is a fire hazard.
Mulch is not burnable once
it starts to decompose.
Wood chips will get wet
from regular watering and
will stay moist. On top of
that, if there is a fire, all
you have to do is to soak
the mulch and it will act as
an additional fire barrier.
I would place a drip
system which would get
buried over by the wood
chips. This would keep
the water below ground
and help the soil to retain
it longer. It is of particular
Come visit our showroom
importance to apply rock
dust, compost and mulch
around trees as well as the
drip system. I use what I
call “tree vents” (clay drain
pipes available from Bourget
Bros in Santa Monica).
These pipes are about 1.5
feet long and get buried
into the ground at ground
level with a two-gallonper-hour
drip head placed
above it. The whole thing
gets mulched over.
Inside the tree vents
is where you apply the
organic fertilizers and/
or special liquids that not
only fertilize the trees, but
help to establish a microbial
colony around the tree
roots. By providing weekly
deep watering, it will
encourage the tree roots
to be robust and healthy
and allows it to withstand
drought and stress.
Many folks have been
applying a basic mulch
from tree bark without
applying proper nutrients,
nor properly watering, and
therefore are now having
tree problems because the
soil is drying up.
Do you know what you
get when you add water to
clay and then heat it up?
Ceramic. Simple.
This year has already
been one of the hottest years
for Malibu ever. We moved
here in 1984 and have never
seen it get to 100 degrees
here. This year we will see
more days of very high temperatures,
and, if you are not
careful, you will lose your
trees overnight. One day the
tree looks fine, the next day,
it is dead.
So mulching is only one
important aspect of proper
property care. Learn the
different types of mulch
and the different ways you
can use them. Make sure
you have changed over to
a drip system that you bury
under the mulch. Just be
aware that the drip system
will have to be changed in
about five to 10 years. The
newer systems will last
longer than the previous
versions of drip systems
because the newer drip
lines have drip heads built
into them, as well as pressure
regulators.
I would add a fertigation
unit into the drip lines
so that you can then add
various organics to the fertigation
unit and it will automatically
go out through
the drip lines to the property.
Ideal for compost tea
or an organic slow release
fertilizer. Look up fertigation
on Google to find out
more. Try Ezy-Gro units,
as they are the best.
So please, before you
apply mulch, give the soil
a good layer of rock dust
for minerals, compost for
nutrients, microbes, and
then mulch it over. You
should have converted
everything over to drip
except the lawn. Plus, there
is a way to bury the drip
line in the yard, too.
Best to water deeply
once or twice a week, then
to do shallow watering
daily or every other day.
Shallow watering causes
plants and trees to have
roots along the top and not
deeper. Shallow roots will
get burned by the heat.
Also, you need to be careful
of overwatering as well
as underwatering. Can you
tell the difference?
The 45th annual
Malibu arts festival
is upon us. Having
covered it last year, I for one
am pretty excited about this
year’s event.
Not only will there be all
types of artwork to enjoy,
talk about and digest, but
many of the artists will be
either from Malibu or are
currently living in Malibu.
So in a lot of ways, it’s
the type of local event that
many Malibu residents love
to attend.
The Malibu Chamber of
Commerce has said previously
that this year’s arts
festival will be different as
it will try to feature more
local Malibu talent and will
include different areas of
art so that attendees can
one minute be surrounded
by paintings, and the next
minute be surrounded by
photography or other media.
There’s just one tiny
problem. In the months
leading up to the festival,
not very many people seem
to have shown up to the two
art pop-ups meant to get
Malibu residents excited
for the festival. I know this
because I have now covered
two of the three pop-ups.
Always wanted to have an extra TV
wherever you are or go? High cost of cable
keep you from adding extra TVs? Now
you can have digital TV available all the
time and never again miss the news, local
weather, or your “stories,” all without
having to pay for an extra cable box!
This portable and lightweight crystalclear
digital TV even works in your
car—and like your favorite large digital
TV—it has a wonderfully clear picture! The
generous 9” screen is bright and brilliant.
There’s even an additional external
The only people I’ve seen
that actually show up to the
brief art installations are the
members of the chamber
of commerce, the artists
themselves and the family
or a couple of friends of the
artists. I have not seen very
many passersby or people
from Malibu who attended
just to appreciate the art.
So what gives? It could
be that the promotion of the
events needs improvement.
On the other hand, the promotion
could be going just
fine, but the interest in the
Malibu community could
be low. That question is not
mine to answer.
But neither of those two
reasons make much sense,
at least to me. The arts
festival will be entering its
45th year, which means
This portable TV receives HD signals from all
your local over-the-air stations, on your patio,
in the kitchen and so many more places.
it’s been successful enough
for Malibu residents to be
interested in it and anything
having to do with it for quite
some time.
Also, I know that there
are many artists of all types
that currently live in Malibu.
So the idea that neighbors
and art lovers in the city
aren’t flooding the installations
as much as possible is
a bit surprising to me.
Whatever the reason,
there will be one last twoweek
pop-up in Malibu very
soon, just before the July 30
main event.
So for all those Malibu
residents who love the arts
festival won’t want to miss
that last pop-up. It’s the
perfect chance to get a taste
of what you’ve been loving
for the last 45 years.
Digital crystal-clear TV wherever you are!
And no expensive
For one night only, Saturday,
July 23, Malibu’s
Casa Escobar at Malibu Inn
will serve as a venue for a
performance by Dick Dale,
the legendary guitarist who
taught Jim Hendrix how to
play the slide left-handed,
wrote the soundtrack for
Pulp Fiction, was dubbed
by Guitar Player Magazine
the “Father of Heavy
Metal,” was called one of
the 100 greatest guitarists
of all time by Rolling Stone
magazine, and is referred to
at times as the “King of the
Surf Guitar.”
When you review all
Dale has accomplished,
you are amazed — and the
same feeling goes for many
who have heard the rock-nroller
play, including Matt
Diamond, producer of the
upcoming concert..
“Everyone who sees
Dick play is blown away,”
Diamond said. “If you attend
the show, you are going
to see the most legendary,
vivacious, inspiring
performance by anyone,
let alone a man who is 79
years old. His chops are
next level. They’re beyond
those of any player today.
His musical ability will
push the limits of the show.
You’ll see a ball of energy
from one of the industry’s
legends. He’s guaranteed to
blow your socks off.”
Dick Dale and Leo Fender
created and pioneered
Fender equipment in the
1950s and ’60s, including
the Stratocaster guitar. Dale
ignited California’s surfing
cult in during that time
with such hits as “Mr. Peppermint
Man,” “King of
the Surf Guitar,” “Let’s Go
Trip-pin’,” “Surf Beat” and
“Miserlou,” a surf rock version
of a folk song.
Dale made waves with
his fat, edgy sound and
aggressive, proto-metal attack.
“Miserlou,” released
in 1962, marked the first
use of a Fender reverb unit
on a popular record to create
an underwater sound
with lots of echo. His music
came from wild animals
roaring, Gene Krupa’s
drum rhythm, and indigenous
people dancing. Dale
plays upside down, backwards,
left-handed.
As the old saying goes,
“You can’t know where
you’re going unless you
know where you’ve been.”
Before the concert, Malibuites
who want a history
lesson should go back in
time and take a listen to
some of Dale’s sensational
sounds or see movies Dale
was featured in, including
“Let’s Make Love,” “A
Swingin’ Affair,” “Beach
Party,” “Muscle Beach Party,”
“Back to the Beach,”
and “Local Boys.”
Now 79 years young and
still giggin’, Dale has been
going at it strong – very
strong – for more than 60
years. His music is still relevant
and pervasive today.
Director Quentin Tarantino
used Dale’s music in the
opening scene of Pulp Fiction,
sparking a surf/rock
music revival.
Dale still goes trippin.’
Join him on Saturday, July
23 at the Casa Escobar. He
will be well accompanied.
One of America’s newest
Surf rock guitarist Dick Dale will perform for one night on Saturday, July 23, at Casa Escobar Malibu. Photo Submitted
excellent musicians emerging
from the Malibu Guitar
Festival, Mike Hayes and
his Malibu All Stars, and
the Bruce Pied Blues Band
will open for Dick Dale.
Come enjoy an evening
of incredible, one-of-a kind
music by one of America’s
music legends who helped
start it all and is still living
it. The show’s promoter,
Diamond Lane Entertainment,
has partnered with
the Surfrider Foundation
for a no-plastics initiative.
At the show, no plastic
straws will be used, and
the Surfrider Foundation
will be selling their clean
canteen cups to be used
for concertgoers to enjoy a
drink from Casa Escobar’s
excellent selection during
the concert.
“We are super stoked
that the venue will have
no plastic straws,” said
Greg Welch, treasurer for
the Surfrider Foundation.
“Clean canteen stainless
steel reusable cups are an
excellent alternative to
single-use plastics. They
leave a zero footprint.”
A portion of proceeds
from the concert will go to
the West Los Angeles-Malibu
chapter of the Surfrider
Foundation, a volunteerbased,
environmental nonprofit
group dedicated to
the protection and enjoyment
of Malibu’s 31 miles
of coastline. For more information,
New EP features DJ’s younger brother
BerklEy Mason
Freelance Reporter
Malibu local and California
State University,
Monterey Bay film graduate
Calvin Alice-Demorest,
after living in the bay area
for some time, decided he
had better move back to
Los Angeles to pursue film.
That is what he thought,
anyway, before he ended
up on a completely different
path than he had anticipated
— music production.
Growing up between
Venice Beach and the San
Fernando Valley, Alice-Demorest,
27, has been “makin’
beats” since he was in
high school, but it wasn’t
until recently that his longtime
hobby transitioned
into something much more
professional. After a yearand-a-half
of tutorials and
practice, the local DJ, who
calls himself Photon A.D.,
finally felt “comfortable”
with the more intricate music
production programs,
particularly Ableton Live.
“It’s really tough to learn
a new music program,” Alice-Demorest
said. “Before
[I started using Ableton
Live], I was using Garage-
Band. It took me a yearand-a-half
of Ableton Live
tutorials before I really got
comfortable with [the program].
Now, it feels like,
‘Where am I going to drive
my spaceship today? What
planet am i going to end up
in?’”
Alice-Demorest is a local
DJ in Malibu and recently
released his electronic
dance music album, “Love
Blast EP,” gaining more
than 400 plays within the
first two days of its release.
“The scene that I really
want to get into and start
playing more shows in is
the fusion of where yoga
meets electronic music —
I feel like that’s the best,”
Alice-Demorest said. “A
lot of it is a little bit slower
than the ravey stuff, [but]
there’s a message in that
[scene]. It’s like, ‘Yeah,
you’re actually a beautiful
person’ [because] the music
is making you feel like you
can kick your life’s butt.”
“Love Blast EP” demonstrates
a unique collaboration
of various artists in
Los Angeles, including his
9-year-old brother, Julian
Tompkins, who is featured
playing the violin on the
track “Feelin’ Fresh.”
Tompkins said his brother
wanted a new element to
his sound, so he suggested
he play the violin on his
new record. Alice-Demorest
agreed, much to Tompkins’
excitement.
“I was kind of nervous
[about] messing up,”
Tompkins said, “but in the
end, it turned out pretty
well, because it was better
than I thought it would be.”
Along with Alice-Demorest
and Tompkins, another
Malibu local is featured
in the DJ’s music, but
in an unexpected fashion.
Elaine Wong, a vocalist
featured on another track,
works at a local yoga studio,
one which Alice-Demorest
frequents.
Wong, who leads guided
meditations, one day said a
Buddhist prayer with which
Alice-Demorest connected.
Alice-Demorest said he felt
the prayer represented the
message he wishes to communicate
to his listeners
through his music.
“I heard her saying this
Buddhist prayer/meditation
thing for love, kindness
and compassion, and
[then] putting it into the
universe,” Alice-Demorest
said. “[Then I] asked her if
I could record her. So we
went back into the meditation
room and I recorded
her on my iPhone. I got
home, cut it in, gave her
some reverb, and it turned
out well.”
In addition to Wong’s vocals,
Alice-Demorest used
another meditation instructor
for a similar reason.
Sampled in that same song
is S.N. Goenka, a master of
Vipassana yoga who started
meditation centers all over
India, later extending to
various cultures all over the
world, said Alice-Demorest,
who has taken two of
Goenka’s courses.
“You go meditate for 10
days straight — you can’t
talk, you can’t write, no
electronics, and it’s free
for all 10 days — room and
board is paid for [as well],”
Alice-Demorest said.
“There’s assistant teachers
there that help you through
the meditation process; you
can’t even give them money
until you’ve done the
course and further know its
purpose.”
Despite Goenka being
deceased, Alice-Demorest
managed to electronically
insert an old recording of
his voice, which he finds
to be very “focused, and
clear” sounding.
“I put in Goenka with
Elaine, [but] in two different
sections of the song,”
Alice-Demorest said. “It’s
a tool to help your consciousness
expand.”
Alice-Demorest does not
limit his work to just one
Calvin Alice-Demorest featured his violin-playing 9-year-old brother, Julian Tompkins,
on one of the tracks from the DJ’s new EP. BerkLEy Mason/22nd Century Media
electronic genre of music.
Through the collaboration
of various instrumentals —
violin, guitar, a number of
vocalists, tambourines, etc.
— the local DJ hopes to
take his listeners on a “musical
journey” that makes
people feel “inspired and
peaceful,” but also “funky,”
Alice-Demorest said.
“A lot of stuff in an [electronic
music] genre sounds
similar within that genre,
so I’m kind of bringing that
wobbly flow and applying
it to psytrance,” Alice-Demorest
said. “I try to have a
lot of different vocal layers
and tribal elements to make
[my track] pop out, rather
than just using the standard
format of the song, which
most [DJ’s] end up using.
Ride of the week
Hollywood stuntman Jeff Jensen’s Malibu rover
Fireball Tim Lawrence
Contributing Columnist
Malibu resident
I’m grateful to call Jeff
Jensen a friend. But
he’s more than that. As
a truly successful stuntman
in Hollywood over the last
30-plus years — and after
breaking nearly every bone
in his body — Jeff has
settled on directing films.
And as cool as that it is,
this where the article is all
about the cars, baby. So
let’s do this thing.
Last week, I ran into Jeff
at the Trancas Starbucks.
We’d been neighbors over
the years, love cars and
movies and so we had a
grip of stuff to talk about.
When Jensen asked me to
join him for an off-road
jaunt in his Polaris Razor
Buggy, I leaped. We’d
meet up in a couple days
and cruise out to Acton,
Calif., to get dirty. But in
that conversation, Jeff also
mentioned his new 2016
Range Rover HSE Td6.
‘Ah ha, time for a Ride of
the Week,’ I thought.
Jensen said this fullsize
Range Rover HSE
comes with a six-cylinder
turbo diesel engine with
start-stop technology,
eight-speed gearbox with
normal and sport modes,
paddle shifters, high- and
low-range transfer case
and adjustable ride height
air suspension. All that
and a 7,900-pound towing
capacity. He picked it up in
Ventura at the Jaguar-Land
Rover dealer.
Jensen and I have a bit
of history together as we
have lived on the same
street for a number of
years. Being the amazing
stuntman that he was, he
doubled Sean Connery in
one of the “Indiana Jones”
films, John Goodman as
Fred Flintstone and has
jumped, dived, rolled and
crashed more than just
about anyone in the business.
He’s also an accomplished
Pikes Peak racer
and has competed at at the
Baja 1,000.
When we got into the
Buggy out in Acton, I
knew that this off-road
speed machine was going
to take me to my edge.
And that we did. You can
watch the episode on my
vlog at www.youtube.com/
fireball, episode No. 380.
But hanging with Jensen
brought back some interesting
memories, like that
time he spiral fractured his
knee for the 18th time and
I, along with five fire fighters,
drug him out of his
place and down the hillside
to a waiting ambulance.
Jensen told me he’d never
ride again.
But, of course he did.
And with a big fat smile
too. Typical stuntman. But
let’s get back to the car.
“This is my ninth Range
Rover,” Jensen told me.
“They’re luxurious, yet a
truly exceptional off-road
vehicle that drives while
towing my motorcycles
and race cars as if you’re
not even towing a trailer.”
Then Jensen shared what
he felt was the best aspect
of the car.
“Literally everything,”
Jensen said. “[It has a]
luxurious interior with all
the latest driver aids and
electronics [and] beautiful
exterior styling and
Jeff Jensen stands beside his new 2016 Range Rover HSE Td6.
Fireball Tim Lawrence/22nd Century Media
the legendary Land Rover
heritage.”
Jensen uses it for work,
play and social, but here’s
his best story.
“They’re so prevalent
in Malibu that I joke that
they’re a Malibu station
wagon that the house keepers
and nannies drive to the
market,” Jensen said. “I
can now tell people I drive
an economy car since it’s
the first vehicle with four
wheels I’ve ever owned
that gets over 20 [miles per
gallon]. Or you can look at
it is a $110,000 dog hauler
(in my case anyway).” It’s
true, too, as his pup Dino
joined us for the trip.
And these truer words
were never spoken better
by a stuntman. Jeff doesn’t
like a lot about Malibu
until we have a natural
disaster, which is usually
once per decade, and
Pacific Coast Highway is
shut down.
“Our town becomes an
island for a few days,”
Jensen said.
Jeff is truly an amazing
guy who has brought a
lifetime of entertainment
to us all and we should be
grateful. He deserves all
the toys of movie success.
And in his words that
have become his philosophy:
“I’m Jeff Jensen. Fall
down, pick up check.”
DJ
From Page 23
You just [want to] have
your own flare, you know?”
Alice-Demorest illustrated
what that journey
might be like when describing
of a new electronic
genre and scene called
Ecstatic Dance, which
is somewhat similar to
“short dance parties,” but
they take place all over
the world. The dancing is
specific to a unique type of
“flowy” movements. Typically
these “dance parties”
take place in “positive environments”
that promote
a healthy lifestyle, Alice-
Demorest said.
“Some of [the Ecstatic
Dance parties] start with
yoga to warm up your
body, then moving into a
dance party, and then at the
end, there’s sound healing
and maybe even meditation
— so, it’s this guided
dance journey,” Alice-Demorest
said. “While you’re
dancing, it’s encouraged
not to talk to anyone, so
you only talk to people
through your dance.”
But Alice-Demorest’s
future endeavors do not exclusively
involve the music
industry. He also has been
incorporating his knowledge
of film into his professional
music career through
the production of various
music videos, which are
still in the beginning stages
of production.
“I want to integrate film
and all kinds of other media
[into my work],” Alice-Demorest
said. “I‘m
really into stage shows
— big productions where
there’s lasers and smoke,
or people popping out of
the floor — but I would
also like to have a full
band that plays with the
electronic music, [along
with] original songs that
I’ve written.”
Along with his large
spectrum of ideas and musical
aspirations, Alice-Demorest
seems like a unique
DJ in that he uses his musical
abilities to empower
individuals and ultimately
to make the world a more
peaceful, beautiful place.
“Often, I will use the
smoke around my computer
and music gear and ask that
only positive vibes come
through,” Alice-Demorest
said. “And before I start I
will set an intention — usually
that I be guided by my
highest self [in order] to
channel the frequencies and
sounds that will spread the
most love and peace to the
universe as possible.”

26 | July 20, 2016 | Malibu surfside news Dining Out
malibusurfsidenews.com
The Dish
Marmalade Cafe answers customers’ call for healthier items
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
Around Malibu, Marmalade
Cafe has the reputation
for serving food of the comfort
variety — pot pies, pot
roast, breakfast plates, etc.
So when the restaurant rolled
out its new seasonal menu a
few weeks ago, one would
think that the new items
would carry the same theme.
Well, think again.
Marmalade Cafe’s seasonal
menu is chock full of
dishes on the healthier and
lighter sides of the spectrum.
The new item that exemplifies
that shift the most
is the So Cal Summer Salad
($12.99), which features
locally sourced baby kale,
toasted almonds, strawberries,
Coachella Valley dates
and goat cheese tossed with
a wildflower honey vinaigrette.
The salad tastes so fresh
that after taking just one bite
Malibu diners will feel as
if they stepped out into the
ocean breeze. For those that
want to unvegetarianize the
dish, patrons can add meat
to the salad such as chicken
or grilled salmon.
Alex Bekeza, general
manager at the cafe, said
one of the best aspects of
the salad is the local feel to
its ingredients.
“All of the ingredients
in there ... and the ingredients
for the dressing are all
from Southern California,”
Bekeza said. “That’s something
that the whole country,
but specifically Malibu,
really has — a desire to eat
locally. So that’s something
we try to echo here.”
Alex said adding some
healthier items to the menu
came as a direct result of
what Malibu residents
wanted in the choices there.
“On this rollout, not only
did we respond to Malibu’s
request for ingredients like
quinoa and baby kale, but
we also created some recipes
that are a lot more healthconscious,”
Bekeza said.
As a result of the initiative,
the items on the new
seasonal menu have had
the best reception from the
community that any other
seasonal menu rollout,
Bekeza said. The restaurant
has offered a special seasonal
menu for the last four
or five years, he said.
“If you look at our product
mix of what we’ve been
selling, it’s overwhelmingly
[that] the top-fiveselling
items are off of this
[menu],” Bekeza said.
Other dishes not to miss:
•Pan-roasted British Columbia
salmon ($20.99):
Sustainably farmed salmon
served with quinoa kale tabbouleh
salad, cucumber yogurt
sauce and pea tendrils.
•Crispy Chicken Sandwich
($13.99): Mary’s
chicken breast, crispy fried
on a toasted La Brea bakery
brioche bun with buttermilk
jalapeno slaw and pickled
red onion served with a
choice of fries, soup, Caesar
or mixed green salad.
The Crispy Chicken Sandwich is a little on the heavier
side, but does feature some healthy ingredients.
Budding track stars learn sport’s events
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
A small group of Malibu
children learned the ins
and outs of track and field
events at a City of Malibu
camp last week at Malibu
High School.
The four-day camp consisted
of the participants
learning the proper way to
run, long jump, high jump,
hurdle and even throw a
javelin. On the last day of
the camp, the children competed
in a miniature track
meet.
On Wednesday, July 13,
the camp focused on high
jump and hurdles fundamentals.
MHS pole vault
coach Tim Ward, along
with his daughter Madeleine,
led the group through
various drills designed to
teach proper form for both
events.
While Ward said the
events they teach change
every year depending on
what the children want
to learn, every day of the
camp focuses on proper
running techniques regardless
of what sport they like.
“Whatever sport you’re
into — whether it’s soccer,
football, tennis — the
biomechanics of how you
run are still relevant,” Ward
said. “We also try to teach
kids [that] once you learn
the correct biomechanics,
then you can manipulate
those biomechanics to
learn how to run faster or
quicker depending upon
your sport.”
In addition to teaching
people how to run the right
way, Ward said he track
and field camp also functions
as a means to get the
sport more recognition and
popularity.
“It’s just to give everybody
a full understanding...
[to] gain their interest in
track and field so they continue
doing it,” Ward said.
Walley will play for LMU next fall
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
Malibu High School
graduate Britty Walley’s
middle name is Jean, but it
might as well be Determination.
During her playing career
as a defender for the MHS
girls soccer team and the
Eagles Soccer Club, Walley
had been told by a few
coaches that she was not tall
enough to play her position.
She even was once told by
MHS coach Jack Craig that
she could not play Division
I soccer because of her stature,
Walley said.
But instead of cowering
and quitting the sport she
has played since before she
could remember, Walley
used those opinions as fuel.
“It doesn’t really bother
me, because then I just
love to prove people like
that wrong,” Walley said.
“That’s just who I am.”
That mentality propelled
Walley into choosing
Loyola Marymount University
as her school of choice
this fall, a school with a Division
I soccer program.
Walley grew up in a soccer
family. Her father played
professionally in England
for Crystal Palace, and her
older brother, London, also
played throughout his childhood.
When Walley was introduced
to the sport, she naturally
took to and fell in love
with it, she said.
Determination has been
a theme throughout Walley’s
soccer career. During
a Surf Cup Thanksgiving
tournament this past year
with her club team, she was
told she would face nationally
ranked forwards and
not to be discouraged if they
played well against her.
But Walley would not
have it. During one game,
she effectively shut down
the girl she guarded.
Walley defended so well
that game that she received
an email from a coach familiar
with the opposing
team’s star player and told
Walley he had never seen
anyone take that player out
of a game.
Walley’s team was considered
an underdog in that
tournament, but ended up
tied for first after beating the
third-place team and tying
both the second- and firstplace
teams.
“That makes me happy,
because if people say you
can’t do something, I love
showing that if you put your
mind to it, you can accomplish
anything,” she said.
Walley’s teammate and
longtime friend Sasha Savitsky
attested to Walley’s
prove-them-wrong attitude
when she recalled a Sharks’
road game against the
Santa Paula Cardinals this
past season. Walley, who
normally plays defender,
worked her way into scoring
position twice and put away
two goals. The Sharks won
that game.
“She wanted to win, she
wanted our team to win,
and she brought this sort of
confidence that we were not
just going to want to win,
but we were going to win,”
“If people say you can’t do
something, I love showing that if
you put your mind to it, you can
accomplish anything.”
Britty Walley — MHS graduate who will play
soccer at Loyola Marymount this fall
Savitsky said of Walley.
“With that, the team kind of
stepped up their game.”
Savitsky, who described
Walley as a “brick wall”
because of her defensive
prowess, said Walley leads
by example and pointed at
her natural inclination to
rise to any occasion.
“There’s definitely no
challenge that she isn’t up
for,” Savitsky said. “I’ve
never seen her not be able to
accomplish something that
she set her mind to.”
Walley said she chose
to play D-I soccer because
both the sport and her education
would be priorities
and that soccer would not
be an afterthought like programs
in lower divisions.
“I think playing Division I
is a privilege,” Walley said.
“Not anyone can play [Division]
I. ... I kind of love that
challenge and I take things
head on.”
Craig confirmed to the
Malibu Surfside News that
he once told Walley she was
too short to play Division I
soccer. At the time, Craig
said he did not feel she fit
the prototypical body type
of center backs playing at
high-level Division I programs,
he said.
“I guess I was wrong,”
Craig said.
The MHS coach also
said Walley played through
various nagging injuries
not only because she loved
the game but also loved her
team.
But if there existed one
overarching example of
Walley’s mindset, it might
be found in the email signature
she used during her
recruitment process. The
message still exists, in allcapital
letters and italics.
“My mind is my greatest
strength,” Walley’s email
signature reads. “I lock on
the ball and I tell myself nobody
is going to beat me. I
will never quit. ... I will never
give up ... and the word
‘can’t’ does not exist in my
mind.”
MHS grad and defender Britty Walley has been called a
“brick wall” by teammates. Alex Vejar/22nd Century Media
Children get competitive
at Malibu basketball camp
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
Those who wanted to “be like Mike” or
crown themselves the new “King James”
got their chance to show their skills at the
first session of the City of Malibu’s basketball
camp last week at Malibu High
School.
A few children learned the basics of
basketball, including dribbling, passing,
shooting and other fundamentals at
the camp taught by MHS girls basketball
coach Andy Meyer.
“We do things to make it a learning experience
but also a fun experience for [the
children],” said Meyer, who has been running
the camp for about six years.
Meyer said the camp is good exercise
for children who are home for summer
and away from regular physical education
classes offered during the school year.
He also said the players get to socialize
with their friends and make new friends in
the process.
“I think [it’s just as good] to learn how
to play with kids you don’t know and then
have competition with kids you don’t know
and kids you know,” Meyer said.
Players on the MHS girls basketball
team volunteered their time and expertise
to the young children throughout last week
and will continue to do so in the next session.
“It’s nice to see them grow also,” Meyer
said.
The camp lasted four days and is continuing
this week for its second session of
the summer.
10 Questions
with Kevyn Linden
Kevyn Linden is a motorcycle
racer and an incoming
junior at Malibu High
School.
How and when did
you get start with
motocross?
I was 5 and a half years
old when I first started. My
dad used to race professionally,
so he got me into it.
What do you like most
about motocross?
The intensity. It’s just
such an intense sport.
There’s nothing like it in
the world. It’s so competitive
and just gets everything
going — your adrenaline,
everything.
What is the most
difficult aspect of
motocross?
The whole thing. You
have to use every part of
your body, from mental to
physical.
Who is your role model
and why?
Probably my dad just because
she’s shown me that
even going through hell,
you can turn it around and
still be happy.
Describe Malibu in one
word.
Quiet. I live up Trancas,
so I live on the quiet end
of Malibu. I go from this
quiet little town where you
can hear the ocean at night
to the super loud racetracks
and everyone’s just revving
their engines, ready to go.
If you could have any
superpower, what
would it be and why?
Speed because, like my
dad taught me when I was
learning how to ride a bike,
speed is your friend.
You’re president for
one day. What is your
first order of business.
To stop having the environmentalists
shut down
dirt bike tracks.
Where do you see
yourself after high
school?
Probably racing professionally.
Of course, if anything
did go wrong, I have
sponsors that would back
Photo Submitted
me up and I could be working
with them businesswise.
So even off the bike, I
still have places to go.
What is your guilty
pleasure?
Food-wise, it’d be cookies.
I love cookies. As an
action, it’s probably being
lazy and going to the beach.
Do you have any prerace
rituals?
I row [with a rowing machine]
every single night,
no matter what. The rowing
machine is the best workout
you can do for riding
a dirt bike. At the track before
I race, I mix Gatorade
power and with water. It’s
super weird, but I just don’t
like the pre-made ones.
Pepperdine Sports
Men’s basketball
adds to roster
Submitted by Pepperdine
University
Pepperdine men’s basketball
coach Marty Wilson
announced last week
that Southern California
native Chris Reyes will
join the Waves this season
as a graduate transfer from
Utah.
The 6-foot-7 forward
was admitted to Pepperdine
last week, and he will
pursue a master’s degree in
learning technology. The
2016-17 season will be his
final season of college basketball.
“The fact that Pepperdine
is near home and that
it’s a great academic university,
that’s what caught
my eye,” Reyes said. “I
really like the basketball
staff and have become
close with them. It’s a great
team. I’ve watched some
of their games the last
couple of years and it’s an
up-and-coming program.
Hopefully we can have another
great season.”
Reyes started 33 of 35
games as a 2014-15 sophomore
and averaged 4.3
points and 3.7 rebounds.
As a 2015-16 junior, he
came off the bench in 35 of
36 games and averaged 2.6
points and 2.3 rebounds.
He and the Utes played
in the NCAA Tournament
both seasons. Reyes graduated
from Utah this summer
with a degree in communication
studies.
“Chris will bring a
wealth of experience on
and off the court that is
needed in our program,”
Wilson said. “His size,
strength, athleticism and
toughness fill an immediate
need and will give
him the opportunity to be
a valuable contributor. His
ability to score in a variety
of ways and his ability to
rebound in traffic are two
things that will allow him
to be successful at Pepperdine.”
Pepperdine’s Kim Hill makes USA Volleyball Olympic team
Submitted by Pepperdine
University
Pepperdine University
alumna Kim Hill will be
a first-time Olympian as
USA Volleyball announced
its 12-player indoor women’s
roster for the upcoming
Rio Olympics on Tuesday,
July 12.
Hill will be joined in
Brazil by Pepperdine men’s
volleyball coaches Marv
Dunphy and David Hunt,
who will serve on the
U.S. coaching staff, and
Kayla Banwarth, a libero
for the USA. Dunphy will
be coaching at his seventh
Olympics and his second
with the women’s team.
Hunt is an assistant coach.
Banwarth played at Nebraska
but just finished her
first season as a volunteer
assistant at Pepperdine.
The U.S. is part of Pool
B and begins competition
on August 6 against Puerto
Rico. The Americans will
also face the Netherlands,
Serbia, Italy and China before
the quarterfinals begin
on August 16.
Hill has been a mainstay
with the U.S. squad the past
couple of years. She earned
the Most Valuable Player
award at the 2014 FIVB
World Championships as
the team won a gold medal.
At the recently concluded
FIVB World Grand Prix,
where the U.S. won the silver
medal, she was named
the tournament’s secondbest
outside spiker.
“Kim’s is a great story to
inspire every junior – trying
out for USA one year,
helping lead us to a world
championship the next, and
playing some of her best
volleyball this year,” USA
coach Karch Kiraly said in
a USA Volleyball release.
“And you can search hard,
but you won’t find a better
teammate than Kim.”
The 6-foot-4 outside hitter
played club volleyball
in Turkey in 2015-16, and
was named MVP of the
Turkish League after leading
VakifBank to the title.
Hill was one of the top
indoor players in Pepperdine
history between 2008-
11 and also was a standout
on the beach. She is the
first and only person to earn
AVCA All-America first
team honors in both sports
in the same school year
(2011-12).
With the Waves’ indoor
team, Hill was a three-time
All-American, earning
honorable mention status
in both 2009 and 2010, and
she was the West Coast
Conference Player of the
Year in 2011. She finished
with 1,300 kills, good for
sixth all time at Pepperdine.
On the beach, Hill was a
member of the Waves’ inaugural
team, which won
the 2012 AVCA national
championship. She repeated
as an All-American
during her second and final
season in 2013.
