Simon Mackie on his robust hand bike.
money raised from Aspire’s annual
fundraising event - The Aspire
Channel Swim. Over 4,600 people
took part in the event in 2015,
enabling the charity to support
many people across the UK and buy
equipment that makes their lives
easier following Spinal Cord Injury.
Simon was one of these grant
recipients who received help to
become more mobile, and to
enable him to indulge in the same
passions he took part in prior to
his injury. Other people helped by
Aspire receive Grants for purchasing
equipment such as lightweight
wheelchairs, Assistive Technology
to enable them to use computers
regardless of the level of their injury,
The Old Vet’nary
continued from page 93
What I am saying is that this was
a time when most vets worked
frenetic long days, but others chose
not to because they were free of
the regulations which stifle today's
profession. New medicines were
being marketed every month and
the practising arm of the profession
seized upon them and often found
further uses for them which stand
successful in a new career, I decided
to fund purpose in raising money for
charity, doing what I still believe I
can do best - keeping on involving
in sports. You learn happiness from
the things you’re good at and I still
think I’m a pretty competent cyclist
- even if I’m doing it with my arms
now rather than my legs!”
The Aspire Channel Swim is a 22
mile challenge, where participants
swim the width of the English
Channel. It runs over 12 weeks, this
year between 12th September and
5th December 2016 with swimmers
taking part in their local swimming
pool, in their own time. It’s free to
enter and all funds raised go towards
helping people paralysed by Spinal
Cord Injury, like Simon.
to this day. I believe that would be a
crime by today's regulations. It was
a time of initiative, of a profession
peopled largely by eccentrics who
nevertheless formed many of the
specialist bodies which exist today.
They built the profession of today
and I am proud to have been part
of that era.
