“It’s all about knowing
the people,” Sekanovich
said. “I do more business
deals with people in the
water than I do on land.”
The Malibu Sharks
Surf Team has about 25
members who are in high
school and 30-40 members
who are in middle school.
Beginning in September,
the team will meet twice
a week in the early morning
at Zuma Beach to work
with coaches. They compete
against other teams in
the region at a variety of
surf breaks.
The competition season
culminates with a championship
event in April in
Oceanside, Calif. In addition
to doing fundraisers
such as the surf swap, the
team sells apparel throughout
the year and has sponsors
to help cover costs.
Linda Zielski, surf team
manager, has a 17-year-old
son who’s on the team. The
kids can’t wait to get in the
water, she said, and it’s a
healthy way for them to
start the day. After the early
morning practices, they’re
ready to go to school and
they’re focused.
“Our thought on being
involved with surfing is
that it’s a great way to get
out, have fun, be part of a
community, get in the water
and connect with nature
and each other,” Zielski
said.

Dementia ‘virtual tour’ to
raise awareness for disease

The Malibu Senior Center
has partnered with
Homewatch CareGivers of
Thousand Oaks to provide
the Virtual Dementia Tour
on Aug. 22 to promote
awareness about dementia,
improve the quality of
care for those living with
dementia, and aid in maintaining
the independence
of local seniors.
The tours, which will
take place at Malibu City
Hall from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. by
appointment only, will allow
participants to experience
firsthand what those
with failing senses due to
dementia endure. Homewatch
CareGivers will
present the Virtual Dementia
Tour to provide a deeper
understanding of dementia
to healthcare professional,
family caregivers and the
public to help them move
from “sympathy to empathy.”
If “walking in another’s
shoes” is the key to empathy,
this virtual tour will
allow people to walk with
the tingling feet of a person
with neuropathy, write
a note with fumbling fingers
or try to select what to
wear as a person who can’t
discern colors.
The event is free, but appointments
are required.
