Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled in high school, undergraduate or graduate students. Interviews are scheduled to be held the week of Sept. 19, with interns starting the week of Sept. 26. The City of Malibu Student Intern Program exposes students to public service and promotes a career interest in local government. At the same time, the City benefits from the skills and fresh perspective a student intern can bring. Student interns are utilized in the various City departments (administrative services, clerk’s office, environmental sustainability, parks and recreation, planning, and public works) and have the opportunity to work on administrative assignments and special projects. Adopt a Park Program seeks volunteers The Parks and Recreation Department is looking for community members interested in assisting with keeping City parks clean and beautiful. Two of the largest parks, Malibu Bluffs Park and Legacy Park, require many hours of weeding, planting, watering and mulching in order to keep the parks’ planted areas as healthy as possible. Volunteers would help with these basic gardening tasks under the supervision of the City’s naturalists, who also teach while they work. The City is currently accepting volunteer registrations for monthly weeding days at Legacy Park to be held on the following Saturdays: Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 15 and Nov. 12. Volunteers will meet from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Legacy Park and will receive expert training and education about native and non-native plant species. Water and snacks will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who enjoys being outside and working the earth and could be the perfect project for school groups, Girl or Boy Scout troops, or students looking for service hours. Police checkpoint of 600 vehicles leads to 21 arrests Submitted by the Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Malibu- Lost Hills Station arrested 21 people during a DUI and drivers license checkpoint on Friday, Aug. 5, at Pacific Coast Highway and Webb Way. malibusurfsidenews.com news Malibu surfside news | August 10, 2016 | 7 Police Reports Car scratched with ‘no parking’ was parked legally Between July 20-23, an unknown suspect allegedly used a sharp tool to vandalize a woman’s car, which was parked in front of her own residence on Malibu Road. The suspect allegedly carved the words “no parking” on the rear and front driver doors. Police said the woman was parked legally in front of her property. The woman had been out of town during the time of the incident, according to the report. In other police news: Aug. 2 • A green tent, $46 and a bottle of Adderall were allegedly stolen from a man’s vehicle parked on Encinal Canyon road. The man parked in a dirt lot and went on a hike. When he returned, he found his items missing. The man said he had forgotten to lock his vehicle. July 31-Aug. 1 • Four paddle boards and multiple paddles were allegedly stolen from a man’s commercial trailer on Pacific Coast Highway and Corral Beach. The door lock to the trailer was allegedly damaged by the suspect or suspects. July 31 • An iPhone 6, several clothing items and jewelry went missing after a suspect allegedly shattered the rear passenger window of a woman’s car parked in the 22000 block of PCH. The woman went inside the location, then came out an hour and 15 minutes later. She initially did not notice anything missing. • An American Express card was allegedly stolen from a vehicle parked at Malibu Lagoon. The suspect reportedly damaged the driver and passenger door handles with a tool used to punch hole in the door locks. The suspect also tried to charge $5,300 on the victim’s credit card in Simi Valley. July 27-29 • A suitcase and two duffle bags were allegedly stolen from a residence on Malibu Road. Some of the victim’s clothing was also cut and torn. The closet door was found pried and broken. July 19-26 • Miscellaneous disaster preparation supplies and equipment were allegedly stolen in the 3800 block Las Flores Canyon. The suspect allegedly entered a storage structure and took items. Locks for the rollup door were found missing. July 15-18 • A generator, two chainsaws and three weed whackers were allegedly stolen from a location in the 3600 block of Winter Canyon Road. Public Safety Commission Commission files updates to several City projects Cassandra Stephenson Freelance Reporter The Malibu Public Safety Commission received and filed project updates pertaining to traffic and safety on Pacific Coast Highway on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at its regular meeting. Discussion focused mainly on issues of unsafe pedestrian crossing and excessive vehicle speed on PCH. Four speed advisory signs are expected to be installed in the Point Dume area in September, the commissioners said. Two more signs will be installed on Busch Drive. The project is part of a general push for more signage. More than 400 signs will be ordered in the next two weeks, said Public Works Superintendent Arthur Aladjadjian. The signs are meant to combat illegal parking, especially in problem areas around the El Matador and Surfrider beaches, and increase awareness for pedestrians and drivers. Another project will lower speed limits from 30 mph to 25 mph in six segments of City roads as suggested by an engineering and traffic survey. The segments include sections of Big Rock Drive, Busch Drive, Carbon Canyon Road, Cliffside Drive, Wildlife Road and Bluewater Road. The survey’s establishment of speed limits was approved and adopted by the Malibu City Council on June 27, though they chose not to lower the speed limit on Civic Center Way, according to City documents. The new speed limits were scheduled to be adopted by the Council on Aug. 8. Those projects are a response to serious issues with unsafe pedestrian crossing, excessive speed, and worsening congestion, especially notable in areas near beaches, such as El Matador, the commissioners said. Mark Russo is team leader for the Malibu Volunteers on Patrol, an organization that works with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to promote safety in the community. The VOP helps patrol the community, including beachfront areas, and helps monitor parking by issuing citations. Russo said the VOP spends as much as 25 percent of their time patrolling a loop encompassing Paradise Cove, the Point, Westward Beach, Zuma and Broad Beach on the weekends. A second car patrols the areas around Surfrider beach. “I’ve been doing this out in Malibu for six years, and I’ll tell you, the last two years it has exponentially gotten more congested up there in terms of pedestrians and parking,” Russo said, noting that increased social media attention may play a role in recent traffic. Russo said pedestrian crossing dangers likely stem from pedestrians who are unfamiliar with the area and drivers who are distracted by glaring sunlight, scenery and the search for parking. “They run the gauntlet up there,” Russo said, referring to pedestrians on El Matador Beach. “We’ve just verbally warned people up there because, I mean literally, they don’t seem to get the concept that they’re in a traffic lane walking three feet into it with their kids and their ice chests and cars are going by at 55 miles an hour.” The commission discussed placing more signs in the area to address the problem, and plans to continue to request signs for pedestrian crossing from Caltrans. Caltrans spokesman Patrick Chandler told the Malibu Surfside News by phone that though he cannot comment on any specific projects in the works without more information from the Committee and Caltrans engineers, there is frequent communication between engineers and the Committee. “We do work closely with the City of Malibu, the City of LA and the City of Santa Monica as part of the PCH taskforce as well as PCH Partners to address the safety concerns and operational issues along PCH,” Chandler said. Chandler also said that one key aspect of safety on PCH is the need for pedestrians to be mindful of their surroundings to cross safely, and that it is better to cross at stoplights and intersections where traffic comes to a stop. Caltrans reported recent repairs to medians, brush clearance, and shoulder grading, according to City documents. However, Commissioner Meril May still has concerns about the condition of the surface of PCH and the effects of unfilled cracks on biker safety and road wear. “A higher standard of surface integrity should exist for PCH versus a highway through Barstow or something,” May said. “This is a bike lane.
