Bear photographed in
FOR LEASE New Storefront w/Parking
23700 Malibu Road | Malibu Colony
Malibu Creek State Park
Researchers hope
to learn how animal
ended up south of
101 Freeway
Submitted by the National
Park Service
Evidence of a black bear
in the Santa Monica Mountains
was discovered last
Tuesday by National Park
Service employees. The
researchers were reviewing
photos from two camera
traps set up in Malibu
Creek State Park to monitor
for wildlife movement and
came upon images of the
mammal dated July 26.
The Santa Monica Mountains
have not had a resident
bear population since
the 1800s, when grizzlies
were extirpated from California.
Since then, black
bears have settled in the
mountains bordering the
north end of Los Angeles,
including the Santa Susana
and San Gabriel Mountains,
but it is extremely
rare for a black bear to be
found south of the 101
Freeway.
Stories and evidence of
bears in the area do occasionally
surface, however,
such as the one killed in
2014 on a 101 Freeway
off-ramp in Westlake Village.
A wildlife crossing is
proposed for neighboring
Agoura Hills after research
on local wildlife has indicated
the need for habitat
connectivity between
the Santa Monica Mountains
and open space to
the north. In particular the
small mountain lion population
in the Santa Monica
Mountains has some of
the lowest known genetic
diversity anywhere in the
west. During the course
of the 14-year study, researchers
have documented
only one occasion when a
mountain lion has successfully
crossed into the Santa
Monica Mountains from
the north.
“The ecological health of
the Santa Monica Mountains
depends in part on our
ability to maintain natural
connections with areas
north of the freeway,” said
David Szymanski, superintendent
for Santa Monica
Mountains National Recreation
Area, a unit of the
National Park Service.
National Park Service
researchers will be checking
camera traps around
Liberty Canyon, where the
wildlife crossing in Agoura
Hills is proposed, to see if
the bear may have crossed
there.
“Malibu Creek State
Park is over 8,000 acres of
open space and is connected
to a much larger network
of habitat,” noted Craig
Sap, district superintendent
for the Angeles District of
California State Parks. “If
this bear decides to stay,
let’s see what we can do to
co-exist with it.”
Council to get involved in PCB problem
City staff to contact,
work with local EPA
before forcing hand
of school district
Eric Billingsly, Freelance
Reporter
The Malibu City Council
didn’t want to butt into
school district business,
but citing public and children’s
safety, members of
the board felt compelled to
intervene.
While the council decided
Monday, Aug. 8, not
to use its Malibu Municpal
Code against the Santa
Monica-Malibu Unified
School District, it took a
first step toward by empowering
staff, mainly
City Attorney Christi Hogan,
to work with the local
Environmental Protection
Agency on taking a harder
look at four Malibu schools
that many feel may contain
high concentrations of
polychiorinated biphenyls,
better known as PCBs.
In the meeting packet, it
stated that Hogan and staff
were tasked with investigating
if the council could
declare a possible highlevel
of PCBs in public
schools a “nuisance” under
the Malibu Municipal
Code.
Doing so may have made
the issue actionable for the
council, which then could
possibly require SMMUSD
to conduct additional tests
for the presence of PCBs
and abate such nuisance
conditions on its properties
within the city.
Instead, however, the
City decided to first try
working with the Environmental
Protection Agency,
which council members
contended was “dragging
its feet” on getting involved,
to participate and
even regulate more testing
in other Malibu schools.
While council members
discussed the issue, some
didn’t mince words when
it came to how the situation
has been handled by the
combined school district.
Mayor Lou La Monte
told a representative of the
district that this is just one
example of why Malibu
is fighting to separate and
become its own school district.
“We would have never
handled it the way you guys
have,” he said.
The district represenative
failed to answer council
members’ questions about
further testing at other
schools, which only furthered
the council’s desire
to get involved and push for
more testing.
The contentious issue
dates back to 2009 and
2010, when testing of air
and soil samples at Malibu
High School and Juan Cabrillo
Elementary School
revealed PCB concentrations
in excess of those
permitted by the Environmental
Protection Agency,
according to the meeting
report.
In response, SMMUSD
enlisted experts from the
EPA and California Department
of Toxic Substances
Control to analyze compliance
with the Toxic Substances
Control Act.
The EPA has classified
PCBs as probable human
carcinogens; the long-term
effects of PCB exposure include
harm to the nervous
and reproductive systems,
immune system suppression,
hormone disruption,
and skin and eye irritation.
Experts concluded PCB
levels were either nondetectible
or within the
health-based EPA safety
threshold. On that basis,
SMMUSD re-opened its
MHS and JCES campuses.
In fall 2014, the City
Council adopted a resolution
urging SMMUSD to
take immediate action to
conduct source testing for
PCBs at all Malibu school
campuses and remove
source PCBs in compliance
with the TSCA.
Subsequent testing by
activist Jennifer deNicola,
who spoke at Monday’s
Activists protest for the remediation of PCBs in Malibu
schools, an effort which may soon include the support of
the Malibu City Council. 22nd Century Media File photo
meeting, in 2015 revealed
levels of PCBs in excess of
the threshold set by federal
law.
While SMMUSD consulted
with the EPA and
agreed to remove PCBcontaining
materials from
certain areas within the
schools, the meeting report
states, it has refused or has
been slow to test additional
areas within MHS and
JCES that are likely to contain
building materials with
levels of PCBs in excess of
those allowed by the EPA.
For this reason, America
Unites for Kids and Public
Employees for Environmental
Responsibility commenced
a lawsuit against
SMMUSD on March 23,
2015, alleging violations
of the TSCA. The trial was
held on May 17, 2016, and
the court has not yet ruled
on the issue.
Malibu City Council
City to purchase 35-acre Trancas Field for $11.4M
Land buy is part of
lawsuit settlement
Joe Coughlin
Managing Editor
A 35-acre land parcel
with significant Malibu history
will soon be owned by
the city’s government.
The Malibu City Council
approved Monday, Aug. 8,
a lawsuit settlement that
includes the $11.38-million
purchase of a 35-acre plot
of land off Trancas Canyon
Road and Pacific Coast
Highway.
If all goes according to
plan, the City could own
the proprety by Oct. 20.
The owner of the land
commonly referred to as
Trancas Field agreed to sell
the property to the City as
part of a lawsuit settlement,
which is also contingent on
an appeals court vacating a
decision ordering the City
to pay $119,802 in attorney
fees.
Beside approving the settlement,
Council members
also had to decide where to
pull the funds for the major
purchase.
While the City boasts
plenty of reserve funds, an
$11.4 million draw would
push the reserve balance below
the council-suggested
minimum of 50 percent of
the operating budget, according
to a memo from
City staff. Therefore, City
Manager Reva Feldman
suggested the City issue
Certificates of Participation,
which are similar to bonds
and pay tax-exempt interest.
Please see Trancas, 9
ROUND IT UP
A brief recap of other City Council action Aug. 8
• Mayor Pro Tem Skylar Peak led a discussion on
adding a ban to plastic food storage products to the
Malibu Municipal Code.
• A reduction in speed limit, from 30 miles per hour
to 25, was approved for portions of Big Rock Drive,
Busch Drive and Carbon Canyon Road.
• Salaries and job scopes were officially approved
for four new positions, all included in the approved
budget, with the City of Malibu.

“Not all vaccines are
good, but not all of them
are bad either,” Denson
told the Malibu Surfside
moms, this is very
important information to
consider. A lot of pediatricians
don’t know the ingredients
in a vaccine, so
it’s important for parents
to ask their doctors questions.
If the doctor isn’t
giving them answers, then
it’s really important that
The anti-vaccination
were two doctors and a
Malibu pilot dies in small-plane crash
Joe Coughlin
Managing Editor
A Malibu man died Tuesday,
Aug. 2, when his sport
plane crashed into a building
in Van Nuys.
Arthur Miller, 78, of
Malibu, was killed at the
scene, according to the Los
Angeles County Coroner’s
Office, after he lost control
of the small aircraft.
According to reports
from the Federal Aviation
Association, Miller was
flying an Arion Lightning
kit aircraft and was practicing
touch-and-go landings
that day.
correlation.
With that, Dr. Andrew
Wakefield, who was the
lead author of the 1998
paper, went on to direct
“Vaxxed,” which aims to
advocate for children’s
health by examining the
MMR vaccine. Through a
series of interviews with
a variety of professionals
and families of “vaccineinjured”
children, the film
aims to promote children’s
health and attempts to inform
American citizens
of an “appalling cover-up
committed by the government,”
according to the
film’s website.
The documentary particularly
focuses on the Center
for Disease Control and
Prevention, stating in the
film that the CDC could no
longer be trusted to “police
itself.” Despite the “explosion
of cases of autism”
post-vaccination, the CDC
continued to look the other
way knowing the MMR
Autism risk.
Denson admires Wakefield
and all of the other
doctors responsible for the
making of the documentary.
“I met them personally
when they screened
the film in Westlake a few
months back,” Denson
said. “They’re like our
heroes for jeopardizing
their career and their reputation
to go against our
government organizations.
They’re amazing.”
But there also exists evidence
that suggests that the
MMR vaccine has no correlation
to autism. A more
recent study was conducted
in April of last year
with findings that opposed
Wakefield’s implications
from his study in 1998, ac-
-Detox-
SOBA RECOVERY CENTER
cording to a Forbes article
by Steven Salzberg.
The conclusion of the
2015 study states the following:
“Receipt of the
MMR vaccine was not
associated with increased
risk of ASD [autism spectrum
disorder], regardless
of whether older siblings
had ASD. These findings
indicate no harmful association
between MMR vaccine
receipt and ASD even
among children already at
higher risk for ASD.”
Furthermore, the CDC
relays its own vaccine
schedule to American citizens
by which they are
required to abide. For the
MMR vaccine, the CDC
recommends that children
-Day treatment-
receive it between 12 and
18 months of age.
That requirement was
formulated despite “strong
evidence” suggesting that
the younger the child is
when getting the MMR,
the higher the risk of autistic
regression, Del Bigtree,
medical journalist and producer
of the documentary,
said in an email. This is especially
the case with African
American males, who
are at a much higher risk
of getting autism, he said.
A previously recorded
question and answer session
will follow the screening
of “Vaxxed” on Aug.
publicist for the film.
Police Reports
Car scratched with ‘no parking’ was parked legally
Between July 20-23, an
unknown suspect allegedly
used a sharp tool to vandalize
a woman’s car, which
was parked in front of her
own residence on Malibu
Road.
The suspect allegedly
carved the words “no parking”
on the rear and front
driver doors. Police said the
woman was parked legally
in front of her property.
The woman had been out
of town during the time of
the incident, according to the
report.
Public Safety Commission
Commission files updates to several City projects
Cassandra Stephenson
Freelance Reporter
The Malibu Public Safety
Commission received and
filed project updates pertaining
to traffic and safety
on Pacific Coast Highway
on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at
its regular meeting. Discussion
focused mainly on
issues of unsafe pedestrian
crossing and excessive vehicle
speed on PCH.
Four speed advisory
signs are expected to be
installed in the Point Dume
area in September, the
commissioners said. Two
more signs will be installed
on Busch Drive.
The project is part of
a general push for more
signage. More than 400
signs will be ordered in the
next two weeks, said Public
Works Superintendent
Arthur Aladjadjian. The
signs are meant to combat
illegal parking, especially
in problem areas around
the El Matador and Surfrider
beaches, and increase
awareness for pedestrians
and drivers.
Another project will
lower speed limits from
30 mph to 25 mph in six
segments of City roads as
suggested by an engineering
and traffic survey. The
segments include sections
of Big Rock Drive, Busch
Drive, Carbon Canyon
Road, Cliffside Drive,
Wildlife Road and Bluewater
Road.
The survey’s establishment
of speed limits was
approved and adopted by
the Malibu City Council on
June 27, though they chose
not to lower the speed limit
on Civic Center Way, according
to City documents.
The new speed limits were
scheduled to be adopted by
the Council on Aug. 8.
Those projects are a response
to serious issues
with unsafe pedestrian
crossing, excessive speed,
and worsening congestion,
especially notable in areas
near beaches, such as El
Matador, the commissioners
said.
Mark Russo is team leader
for the Malibu Volunteers
on Patrol, an organization
that works with the Los Angeles
County Sheriff’s Department
to promote safety
in the community. The VOP
helps patrol the community,
including beachfront areas,
and helps monitor parking
by issuing citations.
Russo said the VOP
spends as much as 25 percent
of their time patrolling a
loop encompassing Paradise
Cove, the Point, Westward
Beach, Zuma and Broad
Beach on the weekends. A
second car patrols the areas
around Surfrider beach.
“I’ve been doing this out
in Malibu for six years, and
I’ll tell you, the last two
years it has exponentially
gotten more congested up
there in terms of pedestrians
and parking,” Russo
said, noting that increased
social media attention may
play a role in recent traffic.
Russo said pedestrian
crossing dangers likely
stem from pedestrians who
are unfamiliar with the area
and drivers who are distracted
by glaring sunlight,
scenery and the search for
parking.
“They run the gauntlet
up there,” Russo said, referring
to pedestrians on
El Matador Beach. “We’ve
just verbally warned people
up there because, I mean
literally, they don’t seem to
get the concept that they’re
in a traffic lane walking
three feet into it with their
kids and their ice chests
and cars are going by at 55
miles an hour.”
The commission discussed
placing more signs in
the area to address the problem,
and plans to continue to
request signs for pedestrian
crossing from Caltrans.
Caltrans spokesman
Patrick Chandler told the
Malibu Surfside News by
phone that though he cannot
comment on any specific
projects in the works without
more information from
the Committee and Caltrans
engineers, there is frequent
communication between engineers
and the Committee.
“We do work closely
with the City of Malibu,
the City of LA and the City
of Santa Monica as part of
the PCH taskforce as well
as PCH Partners to address
the safety concerns and
operational issues along
PCH,” Chandler said.
Chandler also said that
one key aspect of safety
on PCH is the need for pedestrians
to be mindful of
their surroundings to cross
safely, and that it is better
to cross at stoplights and
intersections where traffic
comes to a stop.
Caltrans reported recent
repairs to medians, brush
clearance, and shoulder
grading, according to City
documents. However,
Commissioner Meril May
still has concerns about the
condition of the surface of
PCH and the effects of unfilled
cracks on biker safety
and road wear.
“A higher standard of
surface integrity should
exist for PCH versus a
highway through Barstow
or something,” May said.
“This is a bike lane. This
should be bike lane standard.”
A clothing store and
forces this summer to provide
a pop-up store in Malibu
Lumber Yard this summer.
The store opened on
July 1 and will go through
October.
The event is free.
and visitors during
the summer. The blow dry
bar will be open Friday-
Sunday, according to a
press release.
The pop-up store will be
open Monday-Sunday from
10 a.m.-7 p.m.
The Malibu Lumber Yard
is located at 3939 Cross
Creek Road in Malibu.
Public Works Director
Bob Brager said that “every
roadway should have some
maintenance every few
years,” and a yearly maintenance
program replaces
roads that are deteriorating.
Another less drastic method
of repair is coating the
roadways with slurry to fill
cracks and even the surface.
Though Brager said he
cannot comment on Caltrans’
approach, he said they
will pass the maintenance
request on to Caltrans.
Additionally, an ordinance
specifying that valets
wear high-visibility clothing
will go into effect on
Aug. 11. After that, the new
ordinance will be a condition
of permits where valet
parking is to be used.
The California Incline
Bridge Replacement project
is also slated for completion
in September of
2016.
Homelessness task force
receives $100,000 grant
Submitted by the
Malibu Task Force on
Homelessness
The Malibu Task Force
on Homelessness, along
with the Ocean Park Community
Center, received
a multi-year grant of
$100,000 from the Conrad
N. Hilton Foundation, the
task force announced on
Thursday, Aug. 4.
The grant funds outreach
efforts geared toward connecting
the homeless population
in Malibu to comprehensive,
integrated services,
and permanent housing solutions.
The grant will also
be used to help fund a threeyear
contract with OPCC,
the agency responsible for
carrying out the day-to-day
outreach work.
Consisting entirely of
Malibu residents, MTFH
Trancas
From Page 4
to Feldman, allows the City
the most cash flexibility,
which is especially important
with the current hefty
monetary obligation of the
Civic Center Wastewater
Treatment Facility and the
constant risk of fire because
of high temperatures and
drought conditions.
In the late 1970s and early
’80s, planners were set
on turning Trancas Field
into a residential hotspot
with 15 single-family
homes and dozens of townhomes,
according to City
documents.
Despite plans being approved
by LA County
boards, the location was
has been working since
February to raise funds to
facilitate OPCC’s outreach
services in Malibu. Combined
with significant gifts
and pledges from other
community members, and a
recently-approved $38,000
grant from the City of
Malibu, the grant from the
Hilton Foundation brings
MTFH almost halfway to
its new goal of $555,000 —
the amount needed to fund
OPCC’s work in Malibu for
three years.
“We deeply appreciate
the Hilton Foundation’s
extraordinary support of
our efforts to reduce homelessness
in Malibu, and to
help our neediest residents
find permanent housing
and critically-needed services,”
said Jay Scott, cochair
of MTFH. “Many of
us who provide volunteer
never developed because
multiple lawsuits were filed
against the plans.
The current lawsuit
against the City of Malibu,
an agreement to which
council members had before
them Aug. 8, was the
final one pending.
While there are many
complexities ahead if
the City were to own the
property, a City-commissioned
appraisal valued the
property at $26 million.
Though, according to the
agenda report, “some of the
hiller portions of the property
are unstable and not
suitable for development.”
The property owner said he
spent millions of dollars in
failed development and ensuing
lawsuit battles.
assistance to homeless individuals
in Malibu realize
that OPCC’s professional
approach, vast experience,
and comprehensive services
will bring deeper and
more lasting help to our
homeless neighbors than
anything we could possibly
provide ourselves.”
OPCC expects to begin
work in Malibu later this
summer with a two-person,
full-time professional outreach
team that will engage
homeless individuals on the
streets, hillsides and beaches
of Malibu. They hope to
gradually build trusting relationships
with the goal of
linking them to services.
OPCC Executive Director
John Maceri welcomes
support from foundations
and community groups who
are committed to meeting
the needs of the city’s most
Community concern halts
Point Dume traffic fixes
The collective voice of
residents of Malibu’s Point
Dume neighborhood was
too loud for City Council
members to ignore.
The residents’ concerns
were met with action by
the council, which during
the meeting suspended one
prong of a six-pronged plan
to improve traffic issues on
neighborhood streets.
While five steps in the
plan were smoothly carried
out, the final step that
required property owners
to remove landscape encroachments,
except mature
trees, from the public rightof-way
had Point Dume
neighbors up in arms.
vulnerable residents.
“We are very excited to
begin the next phase of our
collaboration with the Malibu
Task Force on Homelessness
and the City of Malibu
to serve our homeless
neighbors,” Maceri said. “It
takes a community working
to assist people experiencing
homelessness to make
the transition into housing
and toward self-sufficiency.
The efforts and commitment
of all the partners,
including the tremendous
generosity and support of
the Hilton Foundation and
City of Malibu, along with
several individuals and congregations,
have provided
the necessary resources to
begin this important work.”
For more information
about the Malibu Task Force
on Homelessness, email
scottjc42@verizon.net.
In response, City Manager
Reva Feldman decided
additional information was
needed before proceeding
with the improvements.
Back in March, after two
community meetings with
Point Dume residents, the
City Council unanimously
approved the Point Dume
Traffic Calming Improvements.
The first five parts
of the plan — which included
speed bumps, radar
speed advisory signs, lowered
speed limits and more
— were completed. But
residents did not support
the sixth and final effort.
A survey from the City
was recently sent to Point
Dume residents in an effort
to gather ideas on how to
proceed.

Malibuites make terrariums inside glass orbs at City Hall
Suzy Demeter
Freelance Reporter
A Succulent Orb Workshop
was held at Malibu
City Hall on Friday, Aug. 5.
Instructor Mattie Garske
guided participants in creating
an ornamental 5.5-
inch succulent orb terrarium.
Using cuttings from
her own garden, Garske
explained that succulents
easily propagate, even from
their leaves.
“A plant will grow a
brand new plant of itself,”
Garske said.
Participants learned how
to successfully make the
arrangements in the glass
orb. Steps involved placing
river rock to provide good
drainage followed by a layering
of succulent soil mix.
The class then decorated
the back and sides of their
orbs before setting five or
six succulent cuttings in
the middle. Adornments
included sea glass, moss,
shells and sand.
A string was tied on top
to suspend the orb. The
succulents only require two
Judie Graham-Bell places the succulents in the center of
the orb.
small capfuls of water every
10 days.
Garske said she often receives
comments that creating
the orbs is Zen-like and
that it promotes creativity
and focus. This was evident
as the attendees took time
and great care with their
terrariums.
the program. “It incorporates
their imagination instead
of just the alignment
of their poses.”
Malibu Unification Negotiations Committee
Revenue sources chosen for post-split comparisons
After months of
meetings and some
snags, committee
makes first decision
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
In a topic it has discussed
for several weeks, the Malibu
Unification Negotiations
Committee on Aug. 2 chose
which sources of revenue
from the Santa Monica-
Malibu Unified School District’s
unrestricted general
fund to include in calculating
where the two cities
will be financially after the
school district separates.
Four umbrellas of revenue
exist in the district’s
unrestricted general fund:
AMPS to raise funds at Malibu Lumber Yard event
Submitted by Advocates
for Malibu Public Schools
The Advocates for Malibu
Public Schools, the organization
fighting for a Malibu-only
school district, will
hold a fundraiser Aug. 24 at
Mailbu Lumber Yard.
The event will be split
Local Control Funding Formula
sources, Federal Revenue,
Other State Revenue
and Other Local Revenue,
according to the district’s
budget documents. Each
category has multiple items
included in it.
The committee decided to
include the majority of the
revenue sources from the
unrestricted funds, with the
exception of lottery funds,
the mandated cost block
grant and money raised by
the Santa Monica-Malibu
Education Foundation. The
group spoke briefly about
federal revenue, but largely
ignored it because most of
that revenue flows into the
district’s restricted general
fund.
into two parts. From noon-
3 p.m., attendees will be
able to enjoy games, shopping
and entertainment.
There will also be a Super
Summer Scavenger Hunt,
ping pong competition and
other activities.
In the second portion of
With the decision, however,
the committee is not
yet deciding how to divide
the funds between the two
sides after a separation.
“We’re not talking about
who gets what,” Santa
Monica team member Paul
Silvern said. “The question
is what’s in the revenue pot
that determines the difference
between a Santa Monica-only
and the existing
district.”
In discussing the LCFF
funds, the committee also
decided to exclude the portion
that corresponds to state
aid, which can fluctuate
depending on whether the
resulting districts become
state, minimum or basic aid
after the SMMUSD splits.
the fundraiser, from 6:30-
9:30 p.m., the Lumber Yard
will turn into a cocktail party
featuring food, games,
drinks and a live DJ.
Tickets for the event
cost $75. For more information,
having to pay for an extra cable box!
This portable and lightweight crystalclear
digital TV even works in your
car—and like your favorite large digital
TV—it has a wonderfully clear picture! The
generous 9” screen is bright and brilliant.
There’s even an additional external
“That has to be treated
separately,” Silvern said.
Initially, Silvern suggested
to include all of the revenue
sources and only exclude
SMMEF money. But
Santa Monica team member
and attorney Tom Larmore
felt the committee should
also exclude lottery funds
and the mandated cost block
grant because revenue from
those sources are generated
depending on how many
students each district has in
its schools.
By that measure, the total
amount of revenue is not affected
by fluctuations in students
for either city.
The committee also
agreed that excluding the
lottery funds and the mandated
cost block grant
would simplify the financial
calculations.
“That’s good because, as
Tom said, the simpler we
get, the easier for people to
understand and calculate at
whatever basis we calculate
it, the easier it will be,”
Santa Monica team member
Debbie Mulvaney said.
Another agreement the
committee made last Tuesday
involved an order of
principles the group wanted
to tackle in the financial portion
of the negotiations.
The committee decided
to start with identifying
what revenue sources to
include in their talks, and
made progress with that step
Tuesday. Then the committee
will define what the term
“revenue neutrality” will
mean for the negotiations,
and how to achieve that
goal.
The next steps for the
committee after that involve
deciding on a time frame,
figuring out which data
sources to use, and working
out what they called “mechancis.”
From there, they group
will discuss any criteria that
would trigger a re-opener to
the negotiations and clarify
its purpose in the negotiations.
Finally, the committee
will decide how the deal it
eventually wants to make
will be enforced from a legal
standpoint.
Don’t Panic, It’s Organic
Protecting your plants from the drought
Andy Lopez
Contributing Columnist
Invisible Gardener
This year in Malibu,
we will see temperatures
never seen
before in this area. What
does this mean to you?
Having a beautiful garden,
landscape, roses, lawn,
even vegetable gardens is
not an easy task, especially
with the current drought,
high temperatures and hot
winds.
So let me go over some
basics for you to follow
that will help you not only
to get a control on your
water usage, but also to
allow your property not to
suffer at the same time.
These are not rules, but
basic guidelines, a wide
path that you can follow
in your own way. By now
you should know that I
am an all-organic freak.
I do not believe in using
chemical fertilizers, chemical
pesticides, etc. I have
always been 100 percent
organic in what ever I do
and so my first “guideline”
is to follow the way of
sustainability.
In ecology, sustainability
is how biological systems
endure and remain diverse
and productive. Longlived
and healthy wetlands
and forests are examples
of sustainable biological
systems. In more general
terms, sustainability refers
to the endurance of systems
and processes.
The organizing principle
for sustainability is sustainable
development, which
includes the four interconnected
domains: ecology,
economics, politics and
culture. Sustainability
science is the study of the
concepts of sustainable
development and environmental
science.
To me it means just that
every year, you not only
grow, but you actually
have a surplus in both the
product you are working
on and in the structure that
you are working in.
And you also are improving
on the conditions
that you started with. I
believe in leaving things
better than what I start
with. By doing this as your
foundation that you work
from, you look at things
differently and therefore
set up systems that promote
them.
In reference to your
property, how does this
work? Water being in
limited quantity must be
dealt with in a sustainable
manner if you wish to
have any hope of having
anything living on your
property. If your goal is to
just allow your property to
be as natural and as native
as possible, then allowing
your property to do its
thing is an easy path if you
want to go that route.
It is not hard to be invisible
on your property and
to allow nature to do its
thing but this is not possible
with many folks that
have properties that require
support in maintaining its
current structured system.
So for many folks the
question is, “How do I
maintain what I have under
these conditions?”
So here is my answer:
Be aware of your
limitations and act accordingly.
Be active in politics
especially local and strive
to obtain a balance between
environmental and business
needs seeking long term
sustainability. Ask yourself,
“Is this sustainable?”
Look at water as a
limited resource and use it
wisely. Keep all water below
ground including lawn,
there are many systems
that can capture the shower
water and recycle it back
for green lawn use, etc.
Learn to use mulch as
a way to retain water and
to help keep the soil at an
even temperature. I would
use an in-line drip system
which add nutrition on a
regular bases every time
the sprinklers run:
Use Rock Dust for
minerals, Compost for
the microbes, and Azalea
mix — we need soil to be
more acid here in Malibu
— as a mulch. I would
apply this mix every few
months as needed. It is
important to protect the
soil from the heat while at
the same time, to provide
deep watering to trees.
Trees will die if they only
get shallow watering every
few days. Trees should get
a good deep watering once
a week and twice a week
during really hot times. Do
not water everyday or even
three times per week. This
will only cause diseases
and stress out the trees. Yes
the lawn will look great but
don’t water for a few days
and that lawn will probably
die since it does not have
deep enough roots.
Too many folks are over
watering in an effort to
keep their properties looking
good. This will only
cause diseases and more
pests. Aerate the lawn
several times per year.
Add a drip system just
for the trees as they need
a very different watering
program.
If you do not pay attention
to the soil, it will dry
up and bake and turn into
stone.
Use a deep root feeder
nursery — available at
Green Thumb Nursery
in Ventura — attach to
hose. Stick into ground
at high end of property
above the tree about 6 feet
away. Stick the deep root
feeder into the ground and
turn water on slowly. If it
comes out, move to another
spot. If the water doesn’t
go down. Then it shows
you have hard pan. You
will need to slowly water it
over time to allow the area
to soak in water without
run off. Use an EZYGRO
unit attacked to the hose
and put a good organic
fertilizer with micros into a
panty hose then place that
inside the ezygro unit.
It will slowly add
microbes to the soil which
will help to bring the soil
back to life. Move the deep
root feed around the tree
every 6 feet or so. Do not
over water. Water the tree
twice a week for the first
month then only weekly.
Make sure you apply rock
dust, compost and then
mulch it over well.
Joe Coughlin
j.coughlin@22ndcenturymedia.com
Our front-page story
raises an important
question: When
is it appropriate for one
governmental body to
regulate another governmental
body? Like many
questions worth asking,
the answer is complicated
and dependent on a host of
variables that not everyone
understands.
Just because, though,
there is not an easy answer
does not mean the question
is not worth asking and
debating. In fact, doing just
that is of the utmost importance,
especially during a
local election season.
On a local level, the answer
to that specific question
— should one body
overrule another? — can
be even more complicated,
as more emotions and loyalties
are involved. With
the sensitive issue at hand
(PCBs), this is especially
true.
Involved in the Malibu
issue are: the City, the
State, the school board,
local advocacy groups, and
yes, at one point, even law
enforcement.
Everybody wants what
is best for the community,
and many seem to have
different ideas of what
exactly that is.
The school district is
currently holding off on
any more testing for PCBs.
Aware of and possibly frustrated
by this, Malibu City
Council members wanted
to know if they could — or
should — force the district
into action, which would
be more testing and more
random testing of PCBs.
Power struggles are
always interesting, but they
can quickly become more
about power than about
betterment.
It is yet to be seen how,
exactly, this situation will
shake out, but it is clear
that the PCBs story line is
far from over.
The issue will surely
make its way into the
November election campaigns.
School Board and
City Council seats are
both be up for grabs. Julie
deNicola, president of
America Unites for Kids,
who did her own testing,
has pulled her papers for
a City Council seat. If she
finishes her application
and qualifies, the issue will
surely be flung into the
spotlight as Election Day
approaches.
It is an important time in
Malibu. Issues like this lay
like a fog over the city’s
beautiful landscape, and
they are not going away.
Still pending, too, is the
Measure R lawsuit and debate,
as well as the larger
divisive issue of development
in general.
Election season will
magnify the thoughts and
values of many current and
potential elected officials.
That is why it is ever
important for Malibu residents
to stay involved, to
stay informed. And we will
further that process.
Our goal is to inform,
We’ve done that — with
Second Sips and Strokes fundraiser at Paradise Cove a success
Barbara Burke
Freelance Reporter
The T&L Foundation for
Child Care Information’s
second annual Summer
Sips and Strokes fundraiser
was held on Saturday, Aug.
6, in the community center
above Paradise Cove.
The foundation is aimed
at ensuring child care environments
impact the whole
child and to help young
children flourish through
physical and mental wellbeing.
Toward that laudable
end, the foundation
provides mini-grants, education
and outreach programs
to daycare organizations
to strengthen quality
child care and early education
programs through participation
in and education
about health and wellness.
The event seemed to
intrigued those attending
because it allowed them to
enjoy painting with friends,
to sip on wine while overlooking
Malibu Cove, and
to benefit kids in daycare.
One of those attendees was
Geri Fineroff.
“I’m all about kids,”
Fineroff said. “Any organization
that supports education
for healthy kids is important
to me. It’s fun. You
have a little wine, a little
food, and, in my case, I try
to paint. If I make a mess of
that, nobody cares because
it’s all for a great cause.”
Those attending weren’t
entirely on their own for the
painting part of the event.
Brandon Pizzola of Paint
and Sip Studio LA, an art
studio that offers a fun and
unique way to uncork creativity,
showed participants
how to re-create a featured
painting. Pizzola provided
paint and canvases, and
guided those at the event in
the process of unleashing
their inner Van Gogh.
Cori Riggs (left) and Holly Barber work on their paintings
during the class.
“This is a great cause
to help kids in childcare,”
Cherry Papanicolaou said.
“The painting I did last year
is on my wall at home. I
need more art in the house,
and this year’s painting will
hang right next to it.”
In 2015, the inaugural
Summer Sips and Strokes
fundraiser took in $3,600.
The foundation’s board
members carefully reviewed
more than 1,000
applications and the foundation
is currently funding
gardens, nutrition education
and safe physical activity
environments in child
care settings.
“Upon receiving the
great news that we were
one of the agencies
awarded the T&L Foundation
mini-grant, we were
thrilled and excited to
launch our Ready, Set, Go!
project,” said a representative
from Evergreen Child
Care, Inc. “The materials
purchased will help our 400
day care providers expand
their knowledge about nutrition
and portion control
and instill what they will be
learning in their everyday
practices.”
Michelle Slimak’s company,
Apple Valley Family
Child Care, was awareded a
mini-grant, and was excited
that per program received it.
“I can now set up a
separate and comfortable
replicating.
breastfeeding space in my
child care,” Slimak said. “It
is really great, and I would
like to support the mothers
with a comfortable place to
feed their babies.”
The Sips and Strokes
fundraiser featured silent
Malibu natives start beer company, create hybrid brew
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
Just a few years ago, Malibu
natives Brendan Sindell and
Keegan Gibbs hadn’t figured
out what their direction in life
would be. Sindell was just out of
college and working in finance
and wealth management, while
Gibbs was making documentary
films and art in addition to doing
photography for advertising.
Until one day, during a casual
conversation with a friend
about the state of beer and the
alcohol industry, a light went off
in Sindell’s head. He wondered
why there didn’t exist any beer
in between traditional and easily
drinkable American lagers
like Coors Light, or ultra-niche,
heavy craft beers.
So he decided to try and answer
that question.
“We wanted a specific type
of beer and we felt there wasn’t
anything really in the marketplace
that fit our desire,” Sindell
said, “so we decided to create
it.”
There was only one problem.
“When we first launched, we
didn’t know anything about the
beer industry or beer,” Sindell
said. “We just drank a lot of it
growing up.”
But after years of education
and hard work, Sindell
and Gibbs — now 29 and 31,
respectively — have launched
House Beer, and have already
taken Malibu by storm. Their
product is available at Vintage
Grocers, Malibu Colony Liquor,
Duke’s Malibu, Ollie’s Duck
and Dive, Ollo and others locations
around the city.
Sindell and Gibbs met when
they were about 8 or 9 years old
and grew up in Malibu. Sindell
attended Point Dume Marine
Science School, and graduated
from Malibu High School.
In addition to initially being
novices in the beer industry,
the business partners had other
“When we first launched, we didn’t
know anything about the beer industry
or beer. We just drank a lot of it growing
up.”
Brendan Sindell — Co-founder of House Beer
struggles getting their company
off and running. As a
startup, Sindell and Gibbs
did not have the hoards of
cash available that allows
a major beer company to
market and advertise to
consumers.
“We’re up against the
big guys who have all the
capital in the world to do
what they want,” Gibbs
said.
Gibbs called he and
Sindell “disrupters” in a
market that has been traditionally
controlled by big
beer companies or independent,
“culture-heavy”
craft brew companies,
adding that they wanted to
venture out of those two
options and try something
different.
“We’ve had a lot of
naysayers because we’re
not going the easy path
and we’ve had to learn a lot
along the way about how
to forge our own path,”
Gibbs said. “It’s been really
entertaining, but really,
really tough because we’re not
choosing an easy path to get to
where we want to go.”
But although the path hasn’t
been easy, Sindell has relished
proving wrong those who have
said he wouldn’t make it in the
beer industry.
“I’m a pretty competitive person,”
Sindell said. “If someone
tells me I can’t do something or
I’ll be unable to do it, it kind of
Pictured is a can of House Beer,
which is available at various locations
around Malibu. Photos Submitted
pushes me further and makes
me want to work harder.”
Gibbs said the brand he and
Sindell created has a leg up on
its competition because they
market to consumers who are
just like them.
“We do have the upper hand
on them that we are our own target
demographic,” Gibbs said.
“It’s made by us, for us.”
Matt Osterman (right) and Brendan Sindell, along with a dog, do
some research in Denver-based brewery Sleeping Giant.
In speaking about the product’s
name, Sindell said it came
about because the house beer is
the favorite of those who brew
it, and that he wanted consumers
to feel that same sentiment.
“We wanted House to be the
go-to beer for everyone,” Sindell
said, “whether it’s on a hot
summer day at the beach or they
want something to compliment
their beer, like a burger or a pizza
or what have you.”
Sindell and Gibbs hope to expand
their business in the near
future to cities like New York
and Philadelphia, while also becoming
a success story in California.
It seems like they’re well
on their way, and having the
time of their lives doing it.
“We’re creating beer,” Sindell
said. “It seems like there’s not
many better jobs out there.”

Oil painting class also touches on color theory
Barbara Burke
Freelance Reporter
Malibu Creative Arts
Studio, an arts center
launched by Malibu resident
Julia Holland, started
its fine arts workshop series
with a two-day class
for adults and teens on
Aug. 6-7. The workshop
immersed students in the
science of color and the
properties of oil paint,
which artists often view
as a difficult medium to
work with.
The studio’s Visual Arts
Coordinator Leslie Lienau
taught the workshop.
Lienau is the founder of
the Oklahoma-based Conservatory
for Classical
Art, an studio providing
youth and adults with focused
fine arts training in
the classical tradition.
On Saturday, Aug. 6,
Lienau lectured on the
science of color so students
can successfully
mix them. Students completed
numerous exercises
aimed at instilling pivotal
problem-solving skills.
“The workshop is an
exercise-based discussion
about the color wheel, the
use of color in painting
and understanding how to
harmonize color,” Lienau
said. “Having this essential
knowledge is the key
to successful painting.”
Lienau introduced
painting concepts to students
because, as she
said, the course is “where
we start to learn how to
paint in oil properly.” She
also focused on teaching
proper painting practices
to students, including
use of proper materials
and brush and palette hygiene.
Playhouse to showcase 2 events in 1 night
Barbara Burke, Freelance Reporter
On August 13, Malibu Playhouse
Theater will feature
“Salam Neighbor,” a compelling,
game-changing documentary by
Zach Ingrasci and Chris Temple,
directors of the award-winning
film, “Living on One Dollar.”
In “Salam Neighbor,” the
filmmakers fully embedded
themselves in Jordan’s Za’atari
refugee camp, the second largest
refugee camp in the world
where 80,000 displaced souls try
to cope and desperately hang on
to hope.
The documentary is sponsored
by Creative Visions, a Malibubased
nonprofit aimed at effecting
social change through the
arts.
“Creative Visions’ support
of films, documentaries and art
aimed at making a difference
is as good as foundation work
gets,” said Kathleen Keifer,
whose art will be exhibited to
benefit Malibu Playhouse starting
at 7 p.m. on the evening of
the “Salam Neighbor” screening.
translates to “Hello, Neighbor,”
brings home to viewers
the precarious plight of resilient
refugees. In making the film, Ingrasci
and Temple collaborated
with Mohab Khattab and Salam
Darwaza, co-founders of 1001
MEDIA, a company focusing on
telling the stories of Arab communities
in order to transcend
politics and engage audiences
on an emotional and educational
level about extremely challenging
conditions suffered by many
refugees and displaced persons.
The film makes very real the
heart-wrenching conditions of a
refugee camp that houses some
of the most endearing and engaging
people. Like 10-year-old
Ra’ouf who lives in Za’atari and
somehow manages a constant
smile despite being traumatized.
Ra’ouf, who hopes to be a doctor,
refuses to go inside a school
because his school at home in
Syria was bombed.
Salam Neighbor has had a
tremendous impact and is really
making a difference. Recently,
Ra’ouf virtually presented
250,000 petitions to world leaders
at the World Humanitarian
Summit in Istanbul, asking them
to increase education funding in
emergencies.
As the summit session wrapped
up, foreign ministers and heads
of state from around the world
pledged a total of $90 million
dollars to the Education Cannot
Wait Fund to help ensure displaced
children like Ra’ouf get
the chance at an education. This
will help affect approximately
750,000 children like Ra’ouf and
his friends.
The filmmakers have also partnered
with Save the Children, as
well as the UNHCR, the United
Nations refugee agency, and International
Rescue Committee.
These groups will receive a share
of the documentary’s profits to
use for their work with Syrian
refugees.
Temple, 26, and Ingrasci, 25,
have amazing talent. They don’t
just film and edit a story. Rather,
they totally and literally immerse
themselves in a story.
In doing so, in Salam Neighbor
they succeed mightily at
depicting daily, gut-wrenching
challenges suffered by refugees
living literally on the edge of
both war and their very survival.
Before the documentary plays,
Keifer, an amazing California
artist with an ongoing love affair
with Malibu, will begin the night
at 7 p.m. with a special charitable
art exhibition to support the
Malibu Playhouse. Keifer lauded
of the work of documentary
producers such as Ingrasci and
Temple, and foundations such as
Creative Visions.
“They are all aimed at taking
the ‘other’ out of our way
of thinking,” as in “those other
people,” Kiefer said.
Keifer, who has been characterized
as the leader of new California
Realism, sees magic in a
real place and depicts what she
sees in her works.
“I get seduced by a new idea
and I have to paint new things,”
the painter said.
Her works show in 14 galleries,
including the Weisman Museum
in Malibu, Coast Gallery in
Laguna Beach and Dion Gallery
in Redondo Beach.
When Keifer was asked what
one often wants to ask an artist,
“How do you ever let a work
go?” she responded, “Of all the
images in the world, the buyer
has chosen to hang my painting
on their wall. I am so honored
when that happens.”
Keifer’s exhibit will feature
pieces from her coastal icons,
contemporary landscapes, palms,
LA-X and pop art series.
The Keifer family was one
of the original benefactors of
Malibu Playhouse. If you choose
to buy one of her pieces, all art
purchases are 100 percent tax deductible
there are heavy metals in
paint,” Lienau said. “It is
best to keep it off of your
hands. I teach palette etiquette
to make sure painters
are safe, neat and tidy.”
Lienau also gave students
tips on how to take
good care of paint brushes,
whether they are made
from natural hair or are
synthetic. For oil brushes,
she advocated using lavender-based
The Dish
Ollo brings two new summer specials to its menu
Barbara Burke
Freelance Reporter
Led by executive chef
Francesco Velasco, Ollo is
producing a delicious, refreshing
summer menu that
features local and organic
purveyors’ foods. “Using
simple, basic, farm fresh ingredients
and mixing them
all together is the magic
skill that chefs have,”
Velasco said. “Blending
them together is like writing
a song – when it works,
it is fantastic.”
Velasco, who is the executive
chef for Ollo and
its sibling establishments
Ollie’s Duck & Dive and
Bui Sushi, has been a professional
chef for 19 years.
He is originally from Chile
and was raised in Milan,
Italy, where he learned culinary
arts.
Ollo prides itself on being
a family purveyor of
locally sourced California
cuisine with both Mediterranean
and Italian influences.
The summer menu
creatively captures both
genres of cuisine.
“In summer, we’re all
about fresh vegetables,”
Velasco said. “The key is
to locally source them and
to make sure the fruits and
vegetables are absolutely
as fresh as possible. For
instance, tomatoes must be
perfectly ripe. We get them
locally from Thorne Farms
and they pick the tomatoes
at exactly the right time.
That makes all the difference.”
Conveniently, breakfast
at Ollo is served until 3 p.m.
Try the Crab Cake Benedict
($17), which features
two poached eggs, English
muffins, hollandaise, fried
capers, house potatoes and
The Shaved Baby Artichoke Salad is an appetizer built
for two or more.
mixed greens. It’s light and
airy and it has some – but
not too much - zest, which
Velasco says is attributable
to using just a wee bit of
Worcestershire sauce.
For lunch or dinner,
the Summer Truffle Pizza
($25) is not too filling and
features mozzarella, Swiss
chard, green onions, and
shaved black summer truffles.
The crust is just right.
“That pizza features the
perfect mix of crust and
content, said Kaya Ramos,
Ollo’s director of operations.
“I love that mix.” .
Velasco elaborated on the
pizza.
“It’s a totally different
pizza because we use
a mother dough and we
keep feeding that dough.”
Velasco said. “It’s like if
you overcook a pasta, it’s
too heavy and your body
cannot process it right.
Whereas if you cook pasta
al dente, it’s perfect for you
because your body can process
it right and you don’t
feel too full. It’s the same
with pizza dough. We use a
no-yeast dough that makes
for a great pizza”
Ollo updates its menu often,
segueing to new dishes
with the change in seasons,
and when the availability of
fresh ingredients changes.
“Francesco is an awesome
chef who is always
using seasonable items
creatively,” Ramos said.
“We are always changing
our specials every month or
so.” That doesn’t mean that
all dishes go away. Customer
favorites stay on.
For instance, the scrumptious
Shaved Baby Artichoke
Salad, which is an
excellent accompaniment
to any entrée or pizza, has
been a staple since the restaurant
opened.
Ollo’s presentation of
dishes is unique and very
aesthetic, as is the ambiance.
There is an open, airy
feel to the place, in part due
to the beautiful Olive tree
in the middle of the restaurant
and the lovely art on
the wall.
“We feature new artists
each month or so,” Ramos
said. “We like to give back
The crab cake Benedict melts in your mouth and is a unique twist on an old breakfast
favorite. Photos by Alex Vejar/22nd Century Media
The Summer Truffle Pizza is light, but packed with flavor.
to the community by offering
local artists a venue to
show their artwork.”
Other dishes not to miss:
•Squid Ink Pasta ($21):
Featuring tagliolini, a traditional
type of pasta from
the Emilia-Romagna and
Marche regions of Italy,
as well as snow crab, rainbow
peppers, green onions,
garlic, parsley, and a white
wine sauce.
•New Zealand Lamb
Shank ($32): Featuring turmeric
rice and a pomegranate
raitta sauce, an Indian
yogurt-based sauce used to
cool the palate.

Not really sure how
many times I’ve
mentioned that I
love writing these articles.
For many reasons, but one
being that I get to visit
areas of this town that I
didn’t even know existed.
When the opportunity to
visit my next Ride of the
Week came up, I checked
my map app and saw
and sure enough, I was
headed to an area of town
I’d never been — up in
the canyons on a remote
hillside with what would
surely be a spectacular
view. And it was.
Cut to: The home of
film lighting director Ian
Kincaid and his 1962 4X4
Willy’s Wagon. Now, as I
headed up, the first thing
that struck me in this
part of the hills were the
beautiful homes peppered
throughout. And as I left
most of them for a time,
I hit Kincaid’s secluded
abode, a modern piece he
built a while back. It was
perfect for his pride a joy:
his yellow Willy’s Wagon.
I rolled up and was
greeted with an instant
smile from his family and
Kincaid washing the beast.
And as we spoke for a bit
while the truck got sprayed
with a cool Malibu bath,
the glistening yellow panels
began begging me for a
Ian Kincaid and his daughter stand beside his 1962 4-by-4
Willy’s Wagon. Fireball Tim Lawrence/22nd Century Media
great shot. Then, Ian began
filling me in on some
details, one of which was
a Chevy short block with
posi-traction rear end.
“I purchased the Willys
in 1973 for $900 from the
original owners in Pacific
Beach,” Kincaid said. “In
the 70s, all beach towns in
So Cal had miles of hills
to explore and every kid
wanted a 4-by-4. I love
taking my kids to school
driving down [Pacific
Coast Highway] in the
Willys. They sit up high
and can see more than in
our other cars.”
Kincaid and his family
use the vehicle primarily to
go to the beach and get the
kids to school and I could
see that it would be a blast
to do exactly that.
“I saw some 4-by-4s
trying unsuccessfully to
climb a steep hill in Park
City, Utah,” he said. “I
locked the front hubs in,
crawled right up the mountain,
made a U-turn on the
summit and drove right
back down past all the big
frustrated Land Rovers,
Broncos and newer Jeeps.”
That’s the power of Positraction,
friends.
As a lighting director in
the movies, Kincaid has
done a ton. Traveling the
far corners of the world,
we both have worked on
some of the same projects,
but it’s Malibu that
he makes home for a very
good reason. Must be the
cars, right?
Well, maybe, but most
likely it’s because our town
is simply one of the most
beautiful places on Earth.
And for a place with such
beauty, it makes sense to
have a vehicle that can
pretty much go anywhere.
“I’ve traveled all over this
planet and there is no place
I’d rather drive than in our
lovely city,” Kincaid said.
We all know that the key
to success is gratitude. And
if you aren’t grateful, what
you have can easily disappear.
So, it’s pretty easy to
be reminded by living here
in the Bu that life is about
giving.
From sights to sea to cars
and treats. This ensures that
success is for everyone.
Now, if only all of us could
have a cool car.
Wait. Anything’s possible,
right? Let Kincaid’s sunny
Wagon be a symbol for all
things good here in the Bu.
That no matter what the
weather is, the sun is always
shining on our noggins.

Kids play ball at baseball camp
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
For a few Malibu children
last week, baseball
served as the City of Malibu
camp of choice.
But while there was no
seventh-inning stretch
or singing of “Take Me
Out to the Ballgame” and
“Sweet Caroline,” the kids
did swing for the fences
during the camp.
Two coaches — one of
which was a former baseball
player at Malibu High
School — took the children
through various games designed
to teach the group
baseball fundamentals.
They played games of
pickle, competed in timed
baserunning bases, and
also worked on hitting and
fielding ground balls.
“We’re getting them to
learn the game as much
as possible,” said Shaun
Kort, coach of the varsity
baseball team at Harvard
Westlake High School
who led the Malibu camp
last week. “But just with
some 5-year-olds and
some 6-year-olds, we have
to keep it really basic for
the whole group.
Kort said the two main
goals of the camp is to
keep all the children safe
and having fun.
“I think any time you
can get the kids out of the
house, instead of just being
in front of the TV, is a
plus for them and their parents,”
Kort said. “I think
with this age group...I
think keeping them safe
and letting them have fun
is the most important thing
because they’re still learning
how to catch the ball
and hit the ball.”
Cole focusing on ‘small things’ to improve his game
Alex Vejar, Assistant Editor
While at Malibu High
School, Jens Cole was
one of the stars of the water
polo team. He played
multiple positions, scored
a ton and essentially did
anything we wanted in the
pool.
But when he started his
collegiate career at down
the road at Pepperdine
University, Cole suddenly
found himself struggling
to find minutes. He sat
out his first year due to a
shoulder injury and began
to lose the confidence he
built while at MHS.
“It was frustrating, especially
knowing I wanted
to go into college playing
my first year,” Cole said.
“Not being able to do that
was definitely a downfall,
definitely a negative side
to my freshman year.”
The struggles didn’t
stop there. Despite playing
nine games for the
Waves last year and being
named a Scholar-Athlete,
Cole still struggled with
his confidence and did not
play many minutes. He
said he was “boggled” by
playing at such a high level
in high school only to be
relegated to a role player
at the next level.
Cole, however, attempted
to come into his second
year with a new approach.
“Coming into my sophomore
year, there was
kind of that mentality of...
really wanting to play in
game,” Cole said. “So I
took things a lot more seriously.”
After multiple moments
of self-reflection and focusing
on any minutes he
did receive, Cole realized
the way he can get more
“I don’t want to ever be
complacent with how I work. I
want to always be better.”
Jens Cole — water polo player at Pepperdine
University and Malibu High School graduate
Jens Cole’s Sophomore
Year as a Wave
Games Played: 9
Named a Pepperdine
Scholar-Athlete
time in the pole is to embrace
his bench role. The
way he’ll do that, he said,
is getting back to basics
and focusing on the little
things in his game such
as his swim stroke, faking
and defense.
That way, he can prove
to the coaches that he deserves
to be out in the
water contributing to the
team.
“It’s definitely just the
small things,” Cole said.
“If you can do all the fundamental
things right, then
they love you [and] play
you every single minute.”
Cole said one of the biggest
differences between
high school and college
is the level of competition.
In high school, it was
easier to be more complacent
during games, Cole
said, but that’s not the case
nowadays.
“Any team you play at
the college level, you’re
going to be matching up
with guys who were All-
Americans in high school,
if not already All-Americans
in college,” Cole
said. “So everybody you
play is good at their craft
and they’re talented at
what they do. So it’s just a
constant adjustment.”
One of the things that
has helped Cole adjust to
his new environment has
been his teammates, Cole
said. All the Waves players
are very close, much
like the units of which
Cole was a part at MHS.
Cole said his relationship
with his teammates
has made the adjustment
from high school to college
much easier.
“It was almost like you
almost didn’t feel it because
you had that tightknit
community, you had
that tight-knit group of
friends,” Cole said.
Cole has been playing
water polo for almost 10
years, he said. And after
he graduates Pepperdine,
Cole said he will feel comfortable
ending his water
polo career and pursing
sports journalism or
broadcasting.
In the pool, Cole said he
eventually wants to earn a
starting spot on the Waves.
But right now, he understands
he has to focus on
being a role player.
Cole knows that if he’s
to reach his goal, he’ll
need to perfect the fundamentals,
and the rest will
come later.
“I don’t want to ever
be complacent with how I
work,” Cole said. “I want
to always be better.”
Jens Cole wants to contribute to his team as much as possible during his junior year.
Pepperdine Athletics
Soccer player named to South African women’s Olympic roster
Submitted by Pepperdine
University
Pepperdine University
women’s soccer alumna
Roxanne Barker will be
making her second trip
to the Olympics as she
was recently named to the
South African women’s
soccer roster for the 2016
games in Rio.
Pepperdine Athletics
Barker became the first
Wave to compete in the
Olympics when she played
for South Africa in the
2012 Olympic Games in
London. She has been
serving as the starting
goalkeeper for Banyana
Banyana in the national
team’s recent friendlies
against the United States
and The Netherlands.
Barker was born in Pietermaritzburg,
South Africa,
and has made 28 caps
for the national squad. She
is one of 10 players on the
2016 team who also competed
in the 2012 Olympics.
Barker started Banyana
Banyana’s opening
match of the 2012 games
while she was heading into
her senior season at Pepperdine.
Barker played for the
Waves from 2009 to 2012
and was eventually drafted
by the Portland Thorns FC
in the fourth round of the
2013 NWSL Draft. She had
been playing professionally
for Thór/KA Akureyri in
Iceland and recently signed
a one-year deal with SC
Heerenveen Vrouwen in
the Dutch Eredivisie.
While at Pepperdine,
Barker was a four-time
All-WCC selection and
helped the Waves to a
conference title and Top
10 national ranking in
2011. She is still the program’s
all-time leader in
wins (47) and starts (79),
and ranks second in goals
against average (0.87),
shutouts (31.0) and saves
(311). Barker is also seventh
in saves per game
(3.93) and compiled a
career record of 47-22-10
during her time in Malibu.
South Africa will be in
Group E at the 2016 games,
along with Sweden, China
and Brazil, and will open
the competition on August
3 against Sweden.
Waves men’s tennis adds to its coaching staff
Submitted by Pepperdine
University
Pepperdine University
men’s tennis has a new
face in the coaching ranks
as head coach Marcelo Ferreira
recently announced
the hiring of Martin Parkes
as assistant coach. Parkes
brings over 16 years of
coaching and playing experience
to the program.
“I am extremely excited
to have Martin join our
program,” Ferreira said.
\“He fully understands
Pepperdine’s mission and
definitely embraces what
we are trying to accomplish
with our program. He
brings with him years of
experience coaching at the
developmental, professional
and collegiate levels and
has certainly excelled in all
of them. Martin’s passion
and knowledge of the game
will really help us get to the
next level and I cannot wait
to get this partnership started
so we can help our guys
grow as players and mature
as individuals.”
He joins the Waves’ family
after most recently serving
as the assistant coach
and interim head coach
for both the men’s and
women’s tennis programs
at Saint Leo University in
Tampa, Fla., since August
2012.
“I would like to personally
thank Steve Potts, head
coach Marcelo Ferreira and
all who supported my candidacy
for this great opportunity
to become part of the
Wave family, tradition and
culture,” Parkes said. “I am
humbled and honored to be
part of such a great tennis
program with such a rich
history and tradition of success
and I am ready to bring
my professional experience
and investment into
inspiring the program with
Marcelo to new heights.
Pepperdine is truly a very
special place that inspires a
great feeling of community
and pursuit of excellence in
a way that coincides with
my own philosophies in the
development of successful
young athletes into professionals
in all aspects of life
through the sport I have
grown to love.”
While with the Lions,
he quickly made an impact
for both teams and was
named Intercollegiate Tennis
Association National
and South Region Assistant
Coach of the Year after the
2014-15 campaign.
In 2016, he helped lead
the men’s program to an
appearance in the NCAA
Division II Championships
where the squad finished
as runner-up. The squad
finished with a nationalbest
27-2 overall record
and claimed the program’s
first-ever Sunshine State
Conference Regular Season
and Tournament Championships
crowns. The
team also produced the
program’s first #1 Oracle/
ITA national ranking, a feat
maintained throughout a
solid portion of the season.
He coached two studentathletes
to ITA All-American
honors in both singles
and doubles and led senior
Alex Theiler and freshman
Alberto Barroso-Campos to
a No. 1 final doubles ranking
to close out the season.
On the women’s side in
2016, the Lions also earned
both a SSC Regular Season
and Tournament Championship
title. The team earned
a berth in the NCAA Tournament
and competed in
the semifinals against topranked
and eventual NCAA
runner-up BYU-Hawaii.
In 2015, Parkes helped
the men’s squad earn national
and regional acclaim
after leading the team to
a postseason berth in the
South Region, eventually
making it to the regional
title match. The team finished
16-6 overall and saw
many program firsts including
a victory over Lynn.
Throughout his time with
the Lions, he was also responsible
for administrative
duties, player development,
success accountability of
the student-athletes and
program development.
Prior to and throughout
his time at Saint Leo’s,
Parkes spent a wealth of
his time working at Saddlebrook
International Tennis
as a Mental Performance
and International Tennis
Federation Team Group
Leader. He began in 2007,
coaching top-ranked juniors
all over the world on
the ITF junior and senior
circuits, including current
Pepperdine women’s tennis
All-American standout
Luisa Stefani. Under his
coaching skills, Stefani
earned a #10 ITF juniors
ranking.
At the same time, Parkes
worked as a freelance high
performance and international
traveling coach,
working part-time as a
sports psychologist and
personal coach to Jonathan
Marray since 2006, helping
the athlete to a win in the
2012 Wimbledon Men’s
Doubles Championship.
While serving as a personal
coach, he earned the
head coaching positions at
Leeds University for women’s
tennis from 1999-2001
and at Saddlebrook Preparatory
High School. He led
SPHS to a State finalist run.
Parkes wasn’t always
on the sidelines, however,
competing at NCAA Division
I Campbell University
as a student-athlete from
2001-2004. He served as
team captain and earned
the team’s Most Valuable
Player award after working
towards 20-6 singles and
23-9 doubles records in the
2003-04 season.
He earned the coaches
award and a #60 doubles
ranking in 2002-03 and led
his team to Atlantic Sun
Conference tournament
runner-up status in 2004.
He competed in ATP juniors
from 1994-99, playing
in ATP Futures, British
Tour, German League and
Wimbledon pre-qualifying
during his career.
Parkes earned his Bachelor
in Science with a dual
major in Psychology and
Exercise Science from
Campbell in 2004 and garnered
a Masters of Business
Administration with
a specialization in Sports
Business from Saint Leo in
2015.
