The sporty new Merc CLA
THE sporty, expressive design
of the Mercedes-Benz
CLA is now being honed still
further in a facelift involving
new bumpers, a diamond radiator
grille in black as standard
and new light-alloy
wheels.
The interior also benefits from
numerous enhancements,
among them new seat covers
and trim parts, as well as
chrome-plated controls. LED
High Performance headlamps,
HANDS-FREE AC-
CESS and further
possibilities for integrating
smartphones into the control
system are all options that
serve to enhance safety and
comfort. The new addition to
the range is the efficient
CLA 200 d with an output of
100 kW, and CO2 emissions
from as low as 114 g/km.
The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45
4MATIC Coupé now features
even more dynamic
styling and a further upgraded
interior. With a peak performance
of 280 kW and
maximum torque of 475 Nm,
this AMG model is amongst
the most powerful vehicle in
its segment.
The sporty proportions and
powerful, dynamic design
language, characterised by
sensuously rounded contours,
makes the CLA quite
unmistakable.
All models now have a diamond
radiator grille in
black as standard, plus a
new front bumper with a
silver, black or chrome trim
strip.
The rear bumper is optionally
available with a panel
incorporating a trim strip in
chrome or black (Night
package) between the tailpipes.
The range of available
wheels has also been significantly
extended.
The CLA had already previously
included the latest
generation of assistance
and safety systems that
are, in some cases, only
now gradually being introduced
in the other model
series.
Among these are, for example,
Active Brake Assist as
standard (known until now
as COLLISION PREVEN-
TION ASSIST PLUS),
which is able to trigger autonomous
braking as a
means of reducing the danger
of rear-end collisions,
as well as the transmission
mode selection function
DYNAMIC SELECT. With
this system the vehicle
characteristics can be adjusted
at the touch of a
button, as the system modifies
the engine, transmission
and steering at the
driver's request. The ambient
lighting system, which
can be individualised by
setting any one of twelve
colour moods, has been
part of the specification
since the start.

The interior also benefits from
features such as new seat
covers and trim parts, as well
as chrome-plated controls.
The highlight here is a much
slimmer-looking freestanding
20.3 cm (8-inch) media display
with a new-style glass
cover, an optional feature for
the Audio 20 CD system.
Meticulous attention to detail
is also evident from the silver
chrome finish to the controls
and to the fascia and switches
in the doors for the electrically
adjustable seats, as well
as from the chrome surround
to the stowage compartment
in the centre console.
New trim elements in saillook
finish, matt black ash
wood (in conjunction with Exclusive
package), black DI-
NAMICA microfibre (optional
in conjunction with
AMG Line) or aluminium with
honeycomb grain, serve to
liven up the interior.
There is also a revised range
of seat covers: for the Exclusive
package (optional extra)
there is a new leather upholstery
option in sahara
beige/black, while the Urban
equipment line is now available
with a combination of AR-
TICO
man-made
leather/Maringá fabric in crystal
grey or black. Customers
opting for black can choose
between designs with grey or
blue topstitches.
The CLA is optionally fitted
with LED High Performance
headlamps (standard on the
CLA 250 Sport and the CLA
45). Their colour temperature
is closer to that of daylight
than xenon headlamps. The
34-watt LED low-beam headlamps
also have very low energy
consumption - around
60 percent less than xenon
and around 70 percent less
than halogen.
The low-beam headlamps
use LED projection technology,
while the main-beam
headlamps use LED reflection
technology. Direction indicators,
daytime running
lamps and position lights are
in the form of multifunctional
fibre-optic cables, which are
also used for the "Coming
Home" function.
The optional LED High Performance
headlamps are
combined here with tail lights
with automatic intensity control.
The multi-level functionality
regulates the brightness of
the brake lights and direction
indicators in three stages
(Day/Night-time
driving/Night-time stationary).
Loading becomes easier with
the HANDS-FREE ACCESS
option.

NISSAN'S FOCUS ON THE CUSTOMER PAYS OFF
NISSAN'S focus on the customer
is paying off. This was
reflected in a clutch of awards
the brand received in the recent
2015 Ipsos Competitive
Customer Experience (CCE)
Quality Awards for the South
African auto industry.
In a survey of more than
20,000 people, Ipsos rated
customer satisfaction levels
when buying or servicing a
passenger or light commercial
vehicle from a range of
15 car brands in South Africa.
Nissan South Africa excelled
in the light commercial vehicle
(LCV) category, receiving
a platinum award for consistent
customer satisfaction with
the servicing experience from
2012 to 2015, and gold
awards for both the purchasing
and servicing experience
in 2015.
“Nissan is a customer-focused
company, committed to a global
vision of putting the customer
at the centre of
everything we do. We are
absolutely delighted with
these results,” said Xavier
Gobille, Nissan SA’s sales
and marketing managing director
for Sub Saharan Africa.
“The awards are a tribute to

Nissan’s countrywide dealer
network and our sales and
marketing team’s meeting -–
and exceeding -- the expectations
of our LCV customers.”
Nissan South Africa also received
silver awards in the
passenger car category for
the quality of its sales and
service.
The latest Ipsos research
shows that the general LCV
buying and servicing experience
among car brands outshone
that of passenger cars.
Improvements were noted in
all areas of the LCV survey,
while in only 50% of those in
the passenger car survey.
Nissan SA’s scoop of CCE
Quality Awards in this year’s
LCV category complements
its LCV wins in the earlier
2015 Ipsos Product Quality
Awards. The imported Nissan
Navara Diesel Double Cab
won gold for Most Improved
LCV, while – as a testament
to the quality of local production
- the Nissan Hardbody
Petrol Double Cab was voted
Best New LCV and the Nissan
NP200 received the platinum
award in the
Three-quarter Ton category
for Consistent Excellence, after
winning gold in this category
for the last four years.
Nissan South Africa is the
operational hub for Regional
Business Unit South, serving
Nissan's key South Africa
market and 45 other countries
in Sub Saharan Africa,
including Angola, Ghana,
Kenya and Nigeria as well as
the key Southern African

GWM C30- a spacious B0segment sedan now available in
PREVIWED at last year's Johannesburg
International Motorshow
(JIMS), GWM's new C30
compact sedan is now available
in South Africa. This important
B-segment contender will compete
against such vehicles as the
recently released Nissan Almera,
in addition to stalwarts like the
Honda Ballade, Hyundai Accent
and Volkswagen Vivo sedan.
"The C30 slots into a very important
market segment in South
Africa," said GWM South Africa
COO Warren Olsen. "It is aimed
at families who need maximum
passenger and luggage space
and a good balance of power and
economy at an affordable price.
Considering the C30's very competitive
price as well as its standard
features and space, we
believe the C30 to be a very
strong new rival to the traditional
market leaders as it offers
exceptional value for money."
The C30 is the second GWM
sedan offering to reach South
Africa, following the recent introduction
of the C-segment C50.
It is also one of the most popular
sedan models in China, regularly
selling 10 000 units or more
per month in its domestic market.
"Although the C30 fits into the
compact sedan segment, its dimensions
suggest otherwise,"
says Brand Manager Hannes
Oosthuizen. "The C30 rides on a
stretched (2 610 mm) wheelbase
that endows it with one of the
most spacious cabins in its class,
as well as one of the largest
boots, capable of swallowing
475-litres worth of luggage. Another
upshot of the long wheelbase
is a svelte exterior design,"
he explains.
The attractively styled C30 features
chiselled, European lines,
comprehensive colour coding,
15-inch alloy wheels and front
and rear fog lamps as standard.
As is the case with premium sedans,
the C30's colour-coded
side mirror housings also feature
integrated indicators.
The C30 is offered in South Africa
in a choice of six colours;
Titanium White, Star Silver, Noble
Grey, Jazzy Red, Ocean
Blue and Pearl Black.
Inside the cabin, the emphasis
has been on creating stretch-out
space and providing all the modern
convenience items desired
by its target market, including
air-conditioning, power steering,
electric windows all-round,
electric mirror adjustment,
radio/CD/MP3 player with
USB support and a rake-adjustable
steering wheel. Importantly,
Bluetooth connectivity is also
part of the mix.
South African-specification vehicles
feature dark cloth trim to
match the upmarket black finish
of the facia surfaces. Details
such as chrome surrounds for
the sporty main dials of the instrumenation
and silver trim on
the centre hangdown section
contribute to an upmarket ambience.
Maximum ergonomic efficiency
was a high priority for
GWM, as evidenced by the
large rotary ventilation controls
and neat audio system interface.

GWM's interior designers
have utilised the C30's generous
dimensions to include a
number of storage spaces.
The door pockets are large
and also feature drinks holders.
A spacious storage box is
fitted between the front seats
and doubles as a comfortable
central armrest. Drinks holders
are also provided for rear
seat occupants. The boot, one
of the biggest in this segment,
features a space-saver spare
wheel. The rear bench is split
60:40 and can fold down to
allow for the transportation of
longer objects.
Riding on MacPherson strut
front and torsion beam rear
suspension layouts, the C30's
underpinnings have been
tuned to deliver exceptional
ride comfort, without compromising
the car's dynamic talents.
Similarly, the
power-assisted steering is calibrated
for lightness and ease
of use around town, but to
deliver the required weighting
and feel when cruising at
speed.
The C30 is powered by
GWM's 1,5-litre VVT-i engine
that delivers 71,3 kW and 138
Nm of torque. This engine's
reliability and efficiency have
already been proven in other
GWM products, including the
C10 and C20R hatchbacks.
Running costs will not only be
kept low by the standard service
plan and fuel economy,
but also service intervals set
at 15 000 km.
Featuring variable valve timing,
this engine delivers a combined
cycle fuel consumption
figure of 7,3 L/100 km and
powers the C30 to a 170 km/h
top speed. The engine is mated
with a slick five-speed manual
transmission driving the
front wheels.
Occupant safety is well catered
for with the inclusion of
dual front airbags and disc
brakes all-round backed by
ABS with EBD. Child-seat
mountings are fitted at the
rear and the front seatbelts
are height-adjustable. Following
C-NCAP crash testing in
China, the C30 achieved the
maximum five-star rating.
Fog lights front and rear boost
visibility in poor weather conditions
while security is provided
by a standard immobiliser,
with the further convenience
of remote central locking.
The C30 is available through
GWM's extensive dealership
network, currently boasting
more than 70 outlets and service
centres.
The C30 is backed by GWM's
comprehensive 5 year/100
000 km warranty and comes
with 2-years AA roadside assistance.
The price includes a
5-years/45 000 km service
plan.
