The sporty new Merc CLA<br />
THE sporty, expressive design<br />
of the Mercedes-Benz<br />
CLA is now being honed still<br />
further in a facelift involving<br />
new bumpers, a diamond radiator<br />
grille in black as standard<br />
and new light-alloy<br />
wheels.<br />
The interior also benefits from<br />
numerous enhancements,<br />
among them new seat covers<br />
and trim parts, as well as<br />
chrome-plated controls. LED<br />
High Performance headlamps,<br />
HANDS-FREE AC-<br />
CESS and further<br />
possibilities for integrating<br />
smartphones into the control<br />
system are all options that<br />
serve to enhance safety and<br />
comfort. The new addition to<br />
the range is the efficient<br />
CLA 200 d with an output of<br />
100 kW, and CO2 emissions<br />
from as low as 114 g/km.<br />
The Mercedes-AMG CLA 45<br />
4MATIC Coupé now features<br />
even more dynamic<br />
styling and a further upgraded<br />
interior. With a peak performance<br />
of 280 kW and<br />
maximum torque of 475 Nm,<br />
this AMG model is amongst<br />
the most powerful vehicle in<br />
its segment.<br />
The sporty proportions and<br />
powerful, dynamic design<br />
language, characterised by<br />
sensuously rounded contours,<br />
makes the CLA quite<br />
unmistakable.<br />
All models now have a diamond<br />
radiator grille in<br />
black as standard, plus a<br />
new front bumper with a<br />
silver, black or chrome trim<br />
strip.<br />
The rear bumper is optionally<br />
available with a panel<br />
incorporating a trim strip in<br />
chrome or black (Night<br />
package) between the tailpipes.<br />
The range of available<br />
wheels has also been significantly<br />
extended.<br />
The CLA had already previously<br />
included the latest<br />
generation of assistance<br />
and safety systems that<br />
are, in some cases, only<br />
now gradually being introduced<br />
in the other model<br />
series.<br />
Among these are, for example,<br />
Active Brake Assist as<br />
standard (known until now<br />
as COLLISION PREVEN-<br />
TION ASSIST PLUS),<br />
which is able to trigger autonomous<br />
braking as a<br />
means of reducing the danger<br />
of rear-end collisions,<br />
as well as the transmission<br />
mode selection function<br />
DYNAMIC SELECT. With<br />
this system the vehicle<br />
characteristics can be adjusted<br />
at the touch of a<br />
button, as the system modifies<br />
the engine, transmission<br />
and steering at the<br />
driver's request. The ambient<br />
lighting system, which<br />
can be individualised by<br />
setting any one of twelve<br />
colour moods, has been<br />
part of the specification<br />
since the start.<br />

chrome finish to the controls<br />
and to the fascia and switches<br />
in the doors for the electrically<br />
adjustable seats, as well<br />
as from the chrome surround<br />
to the stowage compartment<br />
in the centre console.<br />
New trim elements in saillook<br />
finish, matt black ash<br />
wood (in conjunction with Exclusive<br />
package), black DI-<br />
NAMICA microfibre (optional<br />
in conjunction with<br />
AMG Line) or aluminium with<br />
honeycomb grain, serve to<br />
liven up the interior.<br />
There is also a revised range<br />
of seat covers: for the Exclusive<br />
package (optional extra)<br />
there is a new leather upholstery<br />
option in sahara<br />
beige/black, while the Urban<br />
equipment line is now available<br />
with a combination of AR-<br />
TICO<br />
man-made<br />
leather/Maringá fabric in crystal<br />
grey or black. Customers<br />
opting for black can choose<br />
between designs with grey or<br />
blue topstitches.<br />
The CLA is optionally fitted<br />
with LED High Performance<br />
headlamps (standard on the<br />
CLA 250 Sport and the CLA<br />
45). Their colour temperature<br />
is closer to that of daylight<br />
than xenon headlamps. The<br />
34-watt LED low-beam headlamps<br />
also have very low energy<br />
consumption - around<br />
60 percent less than xenon<br />
and around 70 percent less<br />
than halogen.<br />
The low-beam headlamps<br />
use LED projection technology,<br />
while the main-beam<br />
headlamps use LED reflection<br />
technology. Direction indicators,<br />
daytime running<br />
lamps and position lights are<br />
in the form of multifunctional<br />
fibre-optic cables, which are<br />
also used for the "Coming<br />
Home" function.<br />
The optional LED High Performance<br />
headlamps are<br />
combined here with tail lights<br />
with automatic intensity control.<br />
The multi-level functionality<br />
regulates the brightness of<br />
the brake lights and direction<br />
indicators in three stages<br />
(Day/Night-time<br />

In a survey of more than<br />
20,000 people, Ipsos rated<br />
customer satisfaction levels<br />
when buying or servicing a<br />
passenger or light commercial<br />
vehicle from a range of<br />
15 car brands in South Africa.<br />
Nissan South Africa excelled<br />
in the light commercial vehicle<br />
(LCV) category, receiving<br />
a platinum award for consistent<br />
customer satisfaction with<br />
the servicing experience from<br />
20<strong>12</strong> to 2015, and gold<br />
awards for both the purchasing<br />
and servicing experience<br />
in 2015.<br />

Improvements were noted in<br />
all areas of the LCV survey,<br />
while in only 50% of those in<br />
the passenger car survey.<br />

GWM C30- a spacious B0segment sedan now available in<br />
PREVIWED at last year's Johannesburg<br />
International Motorshow<br />
(JIMS), GWM's new C30<br />
compact sedan is now available<br />
in South Africa. This important<br />
B-segment contender will compete<br />
against such vehicles as the<br />
recently released Nissan Almera,<br />
in addition to stalwarts like the<br />
Honda Ballade, Hyundai Accent<br />
and Volkswagen Vivo sedan.<br />
"The C30 slots into a very important<br />
market segment in South<br />
Africa," said GWM South Africa<br />
COO Warren Olsen. "It is aimed<br />
at families who need maximum<br />
passenger and luggage space<br />
and a good balance of power and<br />
economy at an affordable price.<br />
Considering the C30's very competitive<br />
price as well as its standard<br />
features and space, we<br />
believe the C30 to be a very<br />
strong new rival to the traditional<br />
market leaders as it offers<br />
exceptional value for money."<br />
The C30 is the second GWM<br />
sedan offering to reach South<br />
Africa, following the recent introduction<br />
of the C-segment C50.<br />
It is also one of the most popular<br />
sedan models in China, regularly<br />
selling 10 000 units or more<br />
per month in its domestic market.<br />
"Although the C30 fits into the<br />
compact sedan segment, its dimensions<br />
suggest otherwise,"<br />
says Brand Manager Hannes<br />
Oosthuizen. "The C30 rides on a<br />
stretched (2 610 mm) wheelbase<br />
that endows it with one of the<br />
most spacious cabins in its class,<br />
as well as one of the largest<br />
boots, capable of swallowing<br />
475-litres worth of luggage. Another<br />
upshot of the long wheelbase<br />
is a svelte exterior design,"<br />
he explains.<br />
The attractively styled C30 features<br />
chiselled, European lines,<br />
comprehensive colour coding,<br />
15-inch alloy wheels and front<br />
and rear fog lamps as standard.<br />
As is the case with premium sedans,<br />
the C30's colour-coded<br />
side mirror housings also feature<br />
integrated indicators.<br />
The C30 is offered in South Africa<br />
in a choice of six colours;<br />
Titanium White, Star Silver, Noble<br />
Grey, Jazzy Red, Ocean<br />
Blue and Pearl Black.<br />
Inside the cabin, the emphasis<br />
has been on creating stretch-out<br />
space and providing all the modern<br />
convenience items desired<br />
by its target market, including<br />
air-conditioning, power steering,<br />
electric windows all-round,<br />
electric mirror adjustment,<br />
radio/CD/MP3 player with<br />
USB support and a rake-adjustable<br />
steering wheel. Importantly,<br />
Bluetooth connectivity is also<br />
part of the mix.<br />
South African-specification vehicles<br />
feature dark cloth trim to<br />
match the upmarket black finish<br />
of the facia surfaces. Details<br />
such as chrome surrounds for<br />
the sporty main dials of the instrumenation<br />
and silver trim on<br />
the centre hangdown section<br />
contribute to an upmarket ambience.<br />
Maximum ergonomic efficiency<br />
was a high priority for<br />
GWM, as evidenced by the<br />
large rotary ventilation controls<br />
and neat audio system interface.<br />

GWM's interior designers<br />
have utilised the C30's generous<br />
dimensions to include a<br />
number of storage spaces.<br />
The door pockets are large<br />
and also feature drinks holders.<br />
A spacious storage box is<br />
fitted between the front seats<br />
and doubles as a comfortable<br />
central armrest. Drinks holders<br />
are also provided for rear<br />
seat occupants. The boot, one<br />
of the biggest in this segment,<br />
features a space-saver spare<br />
wheel. The rear bench is split<br />
60:40 and can fold down to<br />
allow for the transportation of<br />
longer objects.<br />
Riding on MacPherson strut<br />
front and torsion beam rear<br />
suspension layouts, the C30's<br />
underpinnings have been<br />
tuned to deliver exceptional<br />
ride comfort, without compromising<br />
the car's dynamic talents.<br />
Similarly, the<br />
power-assisted steering is calibrated<br />
for lightness and ease<br />
of use around town, but to<br />
deliver the required weighting<br />
and feel when cruising at<br />
speed.<br />
The C30 is powered by<br />
GWM's 1,5-litre VVT-i engine<br />
that delivers 71,3 kW and 138<br />
Nm of torque. This engine's<br />
reliability and efficiency have<br />
already been proven in other<br />
GWM products, including the<br />
C10 and C20R hatchbacks.<br />
Running costs will not only be<br />
kept low by the standard service<br />
plan and fuel economy,<br />
but also service intervals set<br />
at 15 000 km.<br />
Featuring variable valve timing,<br />
this engine delivers a combined<br />
cycle fuel consumption<br />
figure of 7,3 L/100 km and<br />
powers the C30 to a 170 km/h<br />
top speed. The engine is mated<br />
with a slick five-speed manual<br />
transmission driving the<br />
front wheels.<br />
Occupant safety is well catered<br />
for with the inclusion of<br />
dual front airbags and disc<br />
brakes all-round backed by<br />
ABS with EBD. Child-seat<br />
mountings are fitted at the<br />
rear and the front seatbelts<br />
are height-adjustable. Following<br />
C-NCAP crash testing in<br />
China, the C30 achieved the<br />
maximum five-star rating.<br />
Fog lights front and rear boost<br />
visibility in poor weather conditions<br />
while security is provided<br />
by a standard immobiliser,<br />
with the further convenience<br />
of remote central locking.<br />
The C30 is available through<br />
GWM's extensive dealership<br />
network, currently boasting<br />
more than 70 outlets and service<br />
centres.<br />
The C30 is backed by GWM's<br />
