THE MARGARET BRIDGE
The Margaret Bridge of Budapest
was constructed as the second
permanent bridge in the capital over
the course of almost 4 years. Lenthy
negotiations and legal wrangling
plagued the project. In connection
with the construction of the Chain
Bridge, formerly in private ownership,
a law had been passed that
before 1936, stating no new bridge
over the Danube could be built within
8 km of the position of the Chain
Bridge. Finally the Chain Bridge was
redeemed by the Hungarian state
and preliminary work on the construction
began. The 607 metre long
bridge, which today links Margaret
Island with St Stephen Boulevard
and Margaret Boulevard, was put
into service on 30 April 1876. The
side bridge linking to the island was
not completed at this time, and up
till 19/08/1900 (present the date
formats onsistenly) the island could
only be approached by boat.
