2-strokes: 125: To be absolutely fair – our large editor ended up on the 125 kinda by accident. On a really nasty rutted sections one of the other blokes was battling to kick all the time – so he was traded with the very easy to ride 250 four stroke and our man took off in a puff of smoke. And guys and gals – what a jol he had! Sure this little bike is built for (far) smaller riders – but the power delivery, suspension and – well just about everything about this little dynamo is FUN!!! The 125 is really quick, right through the gears, really light and nimble and just so much fun to chuck around. Steep hills were a challenge – they needed lots of fast run-ups to lug 100 and odd kilogrammes around, but the clutch handled it all with aplomb. What a cool little bike – it kinda makes us wish that we were teenagers again. Kyle Says: I have never found the smaller 2 Strokes enjoyable. However this little machine surprised me. Twist the grip a puff of smoke comes out the exhaust and boom off you go on this little pocket rocket. Being a 125 you do tend to push her a bit harder, but having said that, if you do have a softer approach there is no doubt she will not let you down. Smooth, Crisp and an absolute joll. Ride her like a Mx bike and away you go. 150: We thought it a shame that Katoom opted to discontinue their 200 and maybe it is – but when we asked the question, they told us that SA is virtually the only place where the 200 sells solidly. So enter the new 150. It’s a full sized bike with a strong li’l 2- stroke engine. We spent a short time in the saddle – and will do a longer review in some really techy terrain soon – but initial impressions are that this bike will be a winner. The one we rode on the day felt a bit boggy down low – quite possibly this can be solved with a bit of jetting, but once the bike builds momentum and starts making power it was awesome fun to ride. Not motocrossy at all, steady torque and very controllable. Without causing insult to smaller riders – we reckon that this bike will be a fantastic entry level machine for young riders and ladies alike Kyle Says: This little machine had some big shoes to fill. And it has done exactly that. After a bit of fine tunning, Alfie and Stephan got this bike running like a beaut. Having read a few articles from the States about this bike I was really excited to give her a go. Point and shoot. You don’t need a rifle, a kattie will do. What surprised us most was the power delievery this bike has. Not as snappy as the 125, but more refined and easier to ride. Would there be one in my garage… YES 250 2-stroke: The 250 two-stroke is more of the same and with ever greater power advances from KTM’s engine developers it has become the weapon of choice for many top enduro riders due to its great spread of power, manageability and light weight. Riding around the six-mile loop in the Spanish mountains there was simply nothing faster when the going got technical and fast changes of direction were needed. There is something about the sound of a two-stroke, no matter where you are, motocross track or bush single track. It always draws attention, regardless of how old you are, whenever you make a motorbike noise it’s always a two-stroke and movies usually ‘dub’ the two-stroke bike sound over a four-stroke. Putting the power to the rear wheel, KTM has incorporated a six-speed transmission with the same ratios as its predecessor. Why mess with something that was spot on in the first place? The 2017 250 EXC is either kicked into life with the conventional kick-starter or via the happy button. If you’re a fan of two-strokes then we don’t have to convince you that much, but the MY17 KTM 250 EXC will make your weekend. The ability to work on a bike that is a little less intimidating compared to a four-stroke is appealing to many. The overall weight is down by 2.1kgs, the bike feels light, really light – it begs the question, where will they be 36 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2016
